Fuck. I heard this once already but didn't believe it and it's the most likely cause. I don't remember the exact measures of the turbine wheels but it is a T3 flanged turbo on a 1300cc engine.

The wastegate is set with a 13psi spring and I got a GReddy EBC connected to it. Vaccum lines everywhere are as short as possible.

Still, thanks for the advice anon!

Alright boys, I've done a fair amount of searching and practicing but I can't seem to find a good answer so perhaps I can get some advice here.

I'd like to become the best I can at shifting, I'm aware practice is imperative however I'd like some input on what I should be focusing on while shifting or practicing. I am able to
>upshift normally
>downshift and rev match normally
>heel-toe normally and rev match
>double clutch upshift
>double clutch downshift while rev matching
>heel-toe double clutch downshift while rev matching

From what I understand, double clutch upshifting is pretty much pointless however double clutch downshifting and rev matching can help save synchros, opposed to just leaving the clutch in and bringing engine speed up before you release it. In addition to this if your engine is high-revving (rotary, etc) in order to keep everything up to speed when changing from 5th to 2nd double clutching is necessary, as with traditional shifting you would need to row through the gears.

My question I suppose in short would be: To perfect my shifting would upshifting normally then d/c downshifting while rev matching be my best bet? Or is all around normal shifting better?
And lastly: any advice on what to keep in mind while practicing would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time anons

I did the brakes a month ago, only replaced the backs because the front had plenty of meat. I get an ABS warning light and just drive it like it doesn't have ABS, if it were the front right sensor that's broken would that cause it to heat up more than the others?

Also while doing the brakes I couldn't flush the front lines.

Found an Audi A4 of 2005 (2.0 diesel automatic) for a little bit less than 7000 euro. It has 165.000 km on it. Is that too much for an Audi? Say he has done regular maintenance over the years is that still too much and will for sure cause me problems in the future?

Two days ago I had two flat tires that couldn't be repaired (front passenger and rear driver).

My gas gauge shows the tank is close to empty with the gas light on. When I stop to buy gas it only lets me pump like six gallons. The gauge will show it's like 40% full when I drive off. And when I tried to 'top it off' it stops immediately.

My tank holds 20 gallons.

Does this mean I'm driving around with a mostly full tank all the time and my gauge is just showing an inaccurate low reading? This has been going on for a few years and this happens at any gas pump.

Is the gauge lying to me or are the gas pumps lying to me?
>>
>>16460550
Could be that the tank vent is obstructed somehow and the pressure rise is making the pump nozzle think the tank is full when it's not even close. Windstars for example had a serious problem with this and in severe cases could take over an hour to actually fill one of their tanks. Similar situations could happen with any modern car.

confirm PCV system was serviced or replaced within past year
make sure ball joints and control arm bushings are good
test MAF sensor
inspect rear delta link bushings

most of these parts are pretty cheap (except MAF sensor) but the labor for most of them is more than two hours

short answer: yes
long answer: volvo parts are not that cheap compared to other vehicle parts and this can compound repair bill costs (stocking and/or shipping plus markup fees are also applied to shop parts FYI), but their parts are quality and usually have longer service life
>exception is the pcv system
>hard to get to, makes vehicle smoke if clogged
>multiple hoses to fail
>expensive and time consuming to replace
not a big deal to get to yourself if you have a weekend, a basic socket set and $100 for parts, but add two hours of shop labor and suddenly the price can triple

So about two weeks ago I overfilled my car with too much oil(yeah, im an idiot I know). As soon as I got on the road huge plumes of smoke were coming out of my exhaust and my car would barely accelerate, I whipped it into the nearest parking lot and had it towed to jiffy lube where they sucked out the excess oil and let it idle (with periodic revs) until the exhaust was no longer putting out smoke.

I've noticed that since then my car seems to be sluggish about picking up speed, I really have to put pressure on the gas when I want to get up above 45 mph. I'm not getting any check engine lights or temp issues. What could the problem be?

I have a question for any beetle fag that might hang around here.
There is this guy at my uni with a Beetle 1600. He keeps going how is modded and how it pushes over 110bhp.
I don't know much about the engine and I can't really be bothered to read hundreds of forums.
I remember he said he replaced intake, headers, exhaust, carb and camshaft.
Is there any chance he can make almost 3 times the power the engine was pushing stock with these mods only?
I imagine the internals would just shit the bed.

>How to get into rally cars
1. buy FWD shitbox for $500
2. trailer it out to the desert/innawoods
3. drive it like you are trying to break it
4. break it
5. figure out why it broke
6. fix it so it doesn't break anymore
7. repeat steps 2-6 till you have a rally car. start at step 1 if you nuke it beyond feasible repair
>>
>>16465727
Look up rally events for begginers in your area.
Buy FWD shitbox that meets the rules.
Make sure the POS is somewhat solid and won't shit the bed.
Strip the interior and mod it to pass the safety inspection (usually just a rollcage and fire extinguisher).
Drive it like is stolen.

what's up with those fog lights?

I feel really hesitant about getting a car that is essentially 10 years old. It looks really clean but it's my first car so I dunno how much the dealership will try to fuck me over if it's a lemon. Okay, i didnt want to start a thread about this. So i hope i get an answer.

I recently purchaced a honda civic and fixed it up pretty nice over the months. It has new steering and front suspension as well as a fresh alignment.

Heres the problem, it still pulls to the right. Hard. I think the problem is that the back passenger tire is an r13 and the rest are r14s. Will my car finally drive correctly if i get the right wheel and tire put on? Or is my problem elsewhere?
>>
>>16454660

>>
>>16467640
What're the tire sizes?
Some 13s and 14s match up for diameter, like the 155/80-13 and the 185/60-14.

Have you jacked the rear end up and given the wheels a spin?
When you replaced the front suspension and steering rack, did you replace the tie rods? Lower control arm bushings? Strut mounts?
>>
Does anyone know why my 92 Ford ranger sounds like the power steering fluid is low endlessly. When im driving straight, turning, reverse anything it sounds like thst whining noise. I've read they are just loud but it seems excessive. Fluid is topped up, tried Lucas leak fix crap dame results. Would having the pump replaced fix the issue or the whole rack and pinion? Not looking to spend that much if so.
>>
>>16468195
No, its the rims that are different. And the 13 is noticeably smaller than the others.

I replaced all of those things with a full kit i bought online.

I havent spun the rear wheels yet, but im going to be doing some tests tomorrow. Ill rotate the tires around and see if it changes the handling at all, and gather results from there.

Any other suggestions?

I just failed my driving test out of the parking spot while reversing. I couldn't see a fast passing car before the test instructor saw it.

What the hell do I do next time? I was looking back (hand on left seat) but never realized how bad the blindspot is on my right (never mind that the corner sight is also blocked by another car).
>>
>>16469785
You have your mirrors, use them.
I never use that position when backing up unless I'm backing into a very close obstacle and I have to see directly how close I am (I don't have parking sensors). The blind spot is just too big.

If i'm backing up straight i just sit normally and use my mirrors, if i'm backing into a place where cars may come from the sides i do the same, plus shoulder checking for incoming cars.

I never understood the people who turn around every time they back up, the mirrors do a way better job IMO

Is there a way to check the pad thickness on drum brakes?
>>
>>16469916
not unless you feel like taking apart a puzzle to get to the actual "pads"
>>
>>16469850
>You have your mirrors, use them.
I would have lost points on "Fails to look around / to rear before / while backing" if I relied on my mirrors. I was using my mirrors only to see my rear tires.

I don't know how much the mirrors would have helped either since I was looking at the back and didn't even see the car very clearly as it passed (passed within half a second or something).

Test instructor saw it though so I must have been doing something wrong.

My MK4 Golf has recently started having some trouble shifting into first while the car is moving. Sometimes it's fine, other times it feels really bad. Does this mean my synchros are worn out? Does it matter? Can I do anything about it that isn't $$$?

>>16470098
>Can I do anything about it that isn't $$$?

Yes, Stop shifting in 1st when you are moving
>>
>>16470098
You should never shift into first if you are moving.
From experience I can tell that a Mk4 Golf will allow you to easily shift into 1st if you are rolling at 1-2 MPH but anything faster is very taxing.
Please stop being a retard and stop blaming the cars for you driving mistakes.
>>
>>16469924
You don't have to disassemble it, just remove the drum. It (theoretically) slides right off once you remove the wheel. In reality you'll have to pull on it and jiggle it and spray penetrant and torch it for an hour until it finally comes free. But you don't have to take apart any of the hardware to check the pad thickness.
>>
>>16469956
When it comes to backing up and/or parallel parking. This is what I was taught way back when I was in driving school.
First you use your mirrors to see anything you can. Sometimes its good to give a slight adjustment to one of the mirrors before you start the car, it makes the tester feel good.
Followed by using your mirrors first to look for anything in their line of slight. If you turn your head towards the mirror you're using it lets them know you're actually looking at the mirror instead of just glancing at it.
THEN you turn your head, both left and right, especially since thats what they want.
It only takes a few seconds to do both of these things.
>>
>>16470098
>shift into first while the car is moving
There is no reason this should ever be necessary. The only reason first exists is to start you moving easily from a complete stop.

you can do the actual install labor yourself
the hardest part is reinstalling the timing belt.
I highly recommend you take it to a machine shop and not slap a questionable head on it however.
ask if the seller has already checked/resurfaced the head or if he knows it's a good head, and then it will be cheap.
>probably bought it thinking he could rebuild the head for more power, but the main weakness for the engine is the connecting rods, autotrans, and exhaust
>head flow is bretty gud

>couple hundo
more like $200-300 to check it for cracks and resurface it
if it's bad, junkyard heads are around $80-100 depending on if you take the cams as well (you can probably reuse the old ones unless they're badly worn)
then another $50-100 for head gasket, goo, and new head bolts to install
>tl;dr- if you can verify the head is good you can just reinstall it for a few hundo

>Option B) Smaller American truck. Might explode next week, might last me for years. Cheaper on gas. Not as comfy

My line of thought is that the extra MPGs I can get from the smaller Murican truck might be offset by the fact that said truck are known for either being mildly reliable or total lemons. So, even though I will be spending more on gas on the Jap truck, it might make more sense since it is almost guaranteed it will outlive the murican truck. I'm self employed so I can write off my gas

tl;dr: Is taking into account potential mechanical issues a good argument for getting a reliable gas guzzler over a potentially shittier but cheaper on gas truck?

The three metal points hold up a mirror that reflects light emitted by the front of the bulb to the mirror on the back which makes the light into an actual beam as opposed to radiating out the front and uselessly blinding everyone and not illuminating the road.

>>
>>16474396
You should get your hands on the workshop manual for that car so you can look at the wiring diagrams and see if you have everything.
Once you have the diagram, setting up that stuff should be super easy.

On old cars it's just one or more antennas spread around the cockpit, lock motors and not a lot of wirings.

You can probably figure out the wiring yourself since you don't have to bother with CANbus and all that stuff.
It's probably going to be something like.
- constant 12v to antennas
- constant 12V to motors
- grounds for everything
- wires from antennas to motors
Or
- wires from antennas to control module and from there to the motors
Or
-Wires from antennas to relay and from there to motors
Or
-Wires from antennas to control module to relay to motors
- both power supply properly fused

Having a proper wiring diagram is obviously best

Where I live there are places that specialise in electric/electronic work on cars, don't know if it's the same where you live.

Traditional mechanics are usually accustomed to some electric jobs here and there so they might not be completely clueless, I guess any places that is not ran by some old fossil that thinks electronics will cause the fall of society will be just as good.

The job you want to do is pretty basic anyway, it just needs time because dropping new wires is not exactly a quick job and there may be some invasive tear-down of some trim pieces around the cockpit so labour costs might be high.

They're called shoes on drum brakes.

That bit of pedantry out of the way, sometimes there's an inspection hole on the backing plate. There's usually a little rubber plug in it, and most of the time the hole is useless.
As for taking the drum off, chances are you'll have to back the shoes off because they wear a lip at the edge of the drum.

Your gas float is probably fucked up.
>>
>>16474973
Changing parts is a matter of situational awareness and not being an idiot with your tools.

Depending on your engine configuration, changing headers might be relatively simple.

When you are faced with something new to replace, you have to first stop and look at where the piece is bolted.
Look at all the possible places where the piece might be linked to other pieces. For your headers, chances are you will have, at most, two nuts per exhaust port on the cylinder head and two to four bolts (or, less likely, a metal clamp) on the other side, where it connects with the catalytic converter or a flexible pipe.

Next thing to do is to find a safe and comfortable way to reach those fasteners and to identify obstacles that prevent you from removing them. Is there a metal plate covering the whole exhaust manifold and you can't see anything? You have to remove it first. Is there a sensor bolted to where the headers join together? You need to remove it first or disconnect it from its wiring harness so you can remove it later. Is there a battery preventing you from reaching those two last bolts? Remove it and see if the situation improves, keep removing obstacles until you have clear road ahead.

Sometimes it might be best to be a little bit cramped than having to do a lot of stuff just for the comfort of reaching a bolt easily. Water pipes, for example, are too much of a hassle to remove (you have to drain coolant, spill shit everywhere and then bleed the whole system when you are done) so they are best left alone. Generally, anything containing fluids should be avoided unless it's absolutely necessary.

Use the right tools and prepare yourself for some rusted to shit bolts, so get yourself some WD40 or equivalent.
You may or may not have to work under the car, are you equipped with a jack and some jack stands?

Finding a good video of someone doing the same job might help, even if it's on a completely different car.
Don't be afraid, learning to wrench is fun

Possible your caliper slides aren't letting the cylinder press the pads to the rotor evenly. Means the back is prolly rubbing a bit or not returning after applying brakes..

Try greasing the bolts/pins that mount the caliper to the bracket.
Or you could have a collapsing brake line?

>shit caught in-between my brakes
Give it a good wash with pressurized water, next step would be to take your wheel off and inspect the brakes

>bent heat shield
You can push your heat shield back with a long screwdriver or similar long object directly from outside of the wheel, no need to remove anything

>worn brakes
Not much you can do besides inspecting them

>bad bearings
Get up to speed, do some long turns in both directions and see if the noise increases when turning.
If it increases when turning right, then you have a bad left bearing and vice versa.

See what test is easier for you to start with. Keep testing until you find the culprit.

I said left side, regardless of where the driver sits.
If you turn right and hear more noise, the bearing (and I'm using singular because you seem to have already ruled out the rear wheels) on the left side is most likely shot, driver position won't change this

I ordered a brand new car, recieved it a couple days ago and just noticed three big deep scratches on the drivers door. Passenger side door doesn't lock, if I hit the button inside the car, it makes the lock "noise," but outside the car anyone can open it.

I opened the panel and to my eye everything seems to be actuating, at least the mechanical levers seem to be. Drivers side is fine, locks no problem.

Could it be the entire solenoid? The fuck happened?
>>
>>16477602
Sounds like something with the lock or handle itself and not the actuator.

Check the linkages to the door handle and lock.

>>
>>16455844
Depends on your driving style, and what the transmission can take or need honestly.

Double clutching is only needed with worn synchros, or dog boxes.

I revmatch without double clutching on down shift and just normally upshift.
>>
>>16477616
I THINK the car came with an aftermarket alarm. Or as an option from the dealer. Power locks with no fob. Would that affect it?
>>

If its making the "lock" sound and the unlock lever/pin/button on the door is working when you press the electronic lock, then its probably the handle, or keyed lock

>>16482722
I guess it's because when you have it repaired by a shop, they will ask a lot of money because it's objectively longer than most usual maintenance/repair jobs, so it goes all into labour and people might think it's something extremely complicated to do.

Also I suppose people might be scared of opening an engine and using torque wrenches because oh my god what if you get the torque wrong by 1Nm and grenade your engine as soon as you crank it.

That said, you make it seem easier than it is, pulling an engine (which is not always required to change head gaskets anyway) is still a long process that requires great care and tidiness if you want to finish the job using all and the same bolts you removed. To someone who is only used to doing oil and brake changes, headgaskets might (rightfully) seem like rocket surgery.

If you aren't looking for something with an emphasis on power and just want something that is pleasant to get up and drive every day I'd recommend a Mazda MX-3. You can swap them and make them quicker but probably won't get anywhere near the Supra or Corvette in terms of speed. Handles great though
>>

>>
>>16486965
I don't really crave an emphasis on power but even just in my old supra I can pace all the mustangs on my roads, most are v6s so it's lolworthy. I thought about mazda and the miata or rx7, but the one had reliability issues for a dd and the other is a fun roadster that just isn't at the top of my list.

Mx3 could be cool, looking at some pictures I can definitely pick it out of a lineup in the average parking lot at least. I'm really partial to clean Japanese interiors and jdm power so I wanted to deliberately break away from that with my next project.

Maybe I'll meet in the middle with a captive import like the starquest, stealth or Eagle talon

A good compromise between those two is actually the Eagle talon with awd, but it's impossible to find the 91 version with pop-up headlights. I know it sounds like I have an idea what I'm looking for already but I've seen or driven (at some point) all the cars I've mentioned, gotta expand dem horizons

They need to be adjusted, in most cars it should only be 4 to 5 clicks up and it should firmly hold the car.

The adjustment method usually consists of taking the rear wheels off, loosening the cable at the hand brake and then using a screw driver to adjust the shoes at the back of the car through a hole through the disc/drum.

The method for your car maybe different so google it.

Obviously, OBD II is not on the car and I can't pull codes like I normally would. Asking for some diagnosis help.

-9 mpg (fuel consumption)
-When idling for ~2+ minutes, check engine comes on followed by a change in exhaust note (skips when the sound changes, becomes deeper)
-Highway speeds for ~2 minutes also cause the above
-City driving produces no check engine light
-Had a fair bit of extra oil in it when purchased 3 months ago (I'd say an extra quart)

I'm guessing an oxygen sensor has gone bad. Chilton's guide does say that the computer will throw up a code if it detects a malfunction after 2 minutes of running.
