As far as I can tell, you start learning by finding an empty parking lot and trying to learn to pick your bike up off the ground.

people literally dont know what trail riding or dirt riding is. i've met so many guys who talk about the trail riding they've done on this or that mild dual sport tire or bike. or they own a dual sport for a year or more and never lay it down. yeah, you wont if you just ride slowly down fire roads and turn around the first time a ditch runs across it

Actually youre full of yourself and picking a fight for no reason. A fight you cant win.
Dirt riding is factually more difficult.
You got btfo on that one so...
>b-but muh track bike
Ok cool. Anyone can claim trackbike, but your talking so someone whos been riding for 25 years and trying to act like youre better than everyone here because you can go round a paved track.
Have some humility and just enjoy riding. Let others enjoy riding.
Get over yourself and your insecurities.
Different people enjoy different things.

just getting around a track and linking the corners together is easier than a lot of singletrack and rough trail riding. pretty much anyone at a beginner trackday can get around the track and make themselves feel like they're going fast. however the local hare scrambles courses here are dangerous to casual riders. i prepared to race one as a novice dirt rider this year and it took me several days of practice to make the full 45 minute loop without stopping or crashing badly. totally different level of difficulty.

however, when you're talking about actual competition, both sports are full of superhumans that have unreal athleticism and bike control. it would take equal practice, skill, and genetic predisposition to be the best at either.

If someone wanted to start learning how to ride offroad what would be the ideal bike? Two stroke or 4 stroke?

Been street riding for over 10 years,

I was thinking about picking up a used YZ250 or a 525 EXC to start fucking around on, is that too much bike to learn on?
>>
>>16455105
unless you smoke your head off the ground i wouldnt.
>>
>>16455125
>is that too much bike to learn on
It will certainly be more bike than you will be able to use and may even slow down your learning progression. Try something like a KDX200 or XR400 or 250EXC-F.
>>
>>16455125
if you plan on staying offroad with it get a kdx200 for two stroke or wr250f for 4stroke.
xr250/400 klx300 are also great bikes to sort yourself out on.
a 525 would likely get you into a lot of trouble just because of the difference in riding styles and bike behavior
>>
>>16455105
I've always figured that if you hit your helmet hard enough to need a new helmet, you'll feel it. Probably not the best way to go but ehh, no brain damage yet.
>>
>>16455125
Pick up an old KX500 or CR500. They're both pretty tame bikes to learn on and will teach you good throttle control.
>>
>>16455138
That's what I'd logically think, but my MSF instructor was really anal about explaining how a small drop of the helmet (like dropping it off a desk) will damage it internally and it'll need to be replaced, and that you have to replace it after 2 years anyways.
>>
>>16455125
Get a 2 stroke, you will learn to be a much better rider on one because they actually require some clutch control. No engine braking with one either. You should be fine on a 250, my first bike ever was a 250 2stroke mx bike and i havent died or gotten seriously injured yet. Just dont treat the throttle like an on/off switch and you will be good. The powerband on 2strokes is sex

Your MSF instructor is a bitch, if there's nothing in the helmet there won't be anything to crush the foam, so unless you crack the shell it'll be fine. and a helmet lasts 5 to 7 years, 2 is absurd.

I did for a little bit. it looks like trash. Just buy the chinkshit OEM style ABS bodywork off fleabay. it looks pretty good and it's cheap.
>>
>>16455239
Well its a track bike, I'm just gonna run it on the tougue when I don't have the cash for trackdays
>>
>>16455164
but are you a good off road rider now, that is the question.
>>
>>16455185
They last longer than 5 years. No one know how long they last... The MEA study showed the EPS foam liners last pretty much forever. Snell has studied 20 year old NOS helmets and found that they worked as expected.
>>
>>16455215
Not him but I have, but it was a KTM so it was smooth as your mama's behind
>>
>>16455297
i don't think sitting hurts them. I think it's wearing them that gradually "breaks in" the eps liner and makes it less effective
>>
>>16455313
so it was all lumpy and flopping around uncontrollably?
>>
>>16455318
You would think, but The MEA study suggests otherwise. The EPS in MC helmets is the same stuff as in bicycle helmets, only bicycle helmets get more head time (because bikes are slow), more sweat, etc. MEA studied new and used helmets, 2 two 20 years old, found no changes. This agrees with the Hurt report, which found no differences due to age or "sissy bar damage".

The abstract of the MEA study is here:
http://biomechanical.asmedigitalcollection.asme.org/article.aspx?articleid=2497744
Again, it's the same foam as motorcycle helmets, the results should apply to motorcycle helmets as well.

Deciding between an R6 and a CBR600rr (both 05).

Any advice?

What's maintenance like on these bikes?

Besides benchracers blabbing about small differences in peak HP numbers they are both good bikes. Their performance will be so close and both so good it likely won't make any difference to you so just sit on both and buy whichever you find more comfortable for yourself.

>maintenance
Supersports are surprisingly not very maintenance intensive, especially considering they're practically race bikes. Oil every 4-8k miles depending on how conservative you want to be. Some people will tell you it's a pain in the ass but I've not really had much trouble with it. IDK about those bikes in particular but on my 01 CBR I don't even have to remove the fairings to drain out the oil.

Thank you for the info!

I'm pretty tall (6'5"), and plan on having someone ride 2 up every now and then.

Is it better to be upright, or leaned forward for this? Also at 250lbs, should I look at changing the dampers?
>>
>>16455513
>upright or leaned forward
On this kind of bike you have pretty much no option except to lean forward. Don't lean onto your wrists tho. Lock yourself in with your legs and don't put weight on your arms.
>fatty
You might want new springs

I mainly ride steep/technical trails and fuck around in my gravel pit track, i like to think i am a good rider. Only setback i can think of is that i was afraid of riding hard when i first got it. Didnt help that its a 1990 nut rattler shitbike with shot rear suspension

>>16455215
Yeah have tried my buddies yz450f and it was still alot easier. You can just lug the motor and it will keep going

Modern 600's are so similar in performance it just comes down to whichever you like the looks of, which comes in the color you like, and which feels best when you sit on it.

Don't wrry about things like performance, they will all be of euql performance in your hands and more than fast enough for anything you plan on doing with it.

>maintenance
I may be biased but R6's have 26,600 mile valve check intervals. That's about 10,000 miles more than the rest of the Japanese 600's.

Most sportbikes are sprung for people in the 180lb range, especially on the rear shock. At 250lbs it would be beneficial for you to respring the bike for your weight.

Go to the racetech website and look up parts for whatever bike youre going to get. They'll tell you the stock spring rate and the recommended spring rate for your weight and riding type once you punch some numbers into their calculator.

I'm 18, and my mother just told me if I get a motorcycle, then she's pulling all my college funds. What do I do now?
>>
>>16456144
That depends. Do you want to act like and be treated like a child? Or do you want to act like and be treated like an adult?
>>
>>16456157
Like I'm an adult. That's what I am, no? Should I just buy it then? Do you think it's a Bluff?
>>
>>16456175
Then what would an adult do in this situation?

Cower in fear of threats from his mother?

Or do what the fuck he wants because he's a fucking adult?

I see.

If she loves me, she will understand. In the meantime, it will suck for her, but that's all dependent on her. Not me.
