Fuck I hate watching clips like this. I've ridden for 6 years like an idiot at times (atleast I admit it) and I've never had a fall. I feel confident that I'm safe and then I watch something like this and realise a dog running across the road could be all it takes for me to not come home to my family. Why couldn't my hobby be building models or reading books.

Look at how he's desperately trying to hold on with his ankles

There's no denying that a good rider can work with anything, but sometimes you need to admit that there's a right tool for the job, and scooters are the right tool for being too poor for a car in southeast asia.

Anything you can do well on a scooter, you can do better and easier on a proper motorcycle

Nah, i'm walking fine. There was a big crack in the nose section and a broken headlight mounting tab, so i'm getting those plastic welded back together, then I can get that and the two side fairings repainted so they match, plus a little touch up on the tail. Then I have to decide if I want to replace the clutch cover or just get some protectors to cover up the scratches on it.

I don't get how people ride like that at such low speeds.

I'm probably just a pussy but i don't have anywhere near that much confidence in my front tire.

When I do push it hard at low speeds I feel it slipping way before I ever get low speed lean angles like that. And I run good tires.

High speed I can run my rear tire to the edge, but low speed lean angles are a whole other animal.

not really
>>

Then why do you need to drop a gear?
>>
>>16378272
because the power difference between 10k RPM and 12k RPM is rather significant

I don't even need those rpms, mine just pulls anywere between 1500 and 7000rpm

If a dog is unavoidable use obstacle surmounting technique and square your front wheel. Doesn't work so well for a Great Dane but you can, and I have, run over a kamikaze dog. (I even had a large sack of trout in my lap and didn't lose the fish.)
>>
>>16378306
>square your front wheel
Care to explain for a retard? Do you mean just go perpendicular to the obstacle and blip the throttle to raise the front?

alright lads, should I get
a) an actually good street bike for ~4000€
or
b)a rather mediocre, less powerful street bike for 2500€ and an offroad bike for 1500€
when the spring comes. I really don't know what the sensible solution is here
>>
>>16378327
I would go for one nice streetbike
>>
>>16377268
Nah, you'll be able to trailer them to events as done with hundred-year-old class motorcycles today, and putt them around. You may have to convert them to hydrogen tho.

Also, you'll be old. A lot of those old folks you see at bike events were young lions once, and I don't mean furries. They raced when you had to build a race bike. They raced hardtail frames with short travel forks on sand tracks. They raced when "scramblers" were ironhead Harley Sportsters, BSA Gold Stars, and Triumph twins. Laugh all you want, you'll be on their moblity scooters soon enough. Your bros and broads will have predeceased you, your baiku if you still have it will be a garage ornament, and your youth will be a fading memory.

Your meme bikes with be largely gone, and the remainder that aren't in museums will be cuckfe'ed into whatever is fashionable at the time, which may be more bizarre and dysfunctional than a badly done chopper.

Go to Barber Vintage. It's all in one place, has fucking great tent camping and facilities, and shits all over Daytona except for Daytona road races and flat track, tho Barber's vintage racing is excellent. Museum may be biggest bike museum in world and has thousands of bikes. I've been to both and prefer Barber. Daytona is a spread out crowded clusterfuck. Barber is wonderfully done. No contest.

It has every bike, and parts, you could possibly be interested in and many you've likely never seen anywhere else. Plenty of modern machines, the parking lots are as interesting as the brand events, and KTM has a large test ride facility set up.
>>
>>16378341
I just wish those beat to shit enduros weren't so expensive
>>
>>16378387
Why not both!
>>
>>16378327
Multibike owner here who greatly prefers having many more than one.

When you have two, you can mod or work on one with no riding interruption and dirt is huge fun.

Don't go shopping hungry. Winter should yield bargains.
>>
>>16378394
Even better if you've the time! I've done both same year. They don't conflict. Also Mid-Ohio is a great swap meet with a shitload of dirtbike/flat track/vintage/some modern stuff at the very large swap meet.

Anyone who has not been to a serious swap meet should attend one. Bring sunscreen, comfy walking shoes, and a backpack/Camelbak/canteen. I do that for Barber, Daytona, AMCA meets (amazing antique and vintage rides show up at those), Mid-Ohio etc.
>>
>>16378406
Yeee. Sounds sweet. Ima look into it. Thanks man. I have a pretty good work schedule and hey a good amount of tone off. So I'd I'm off I'll definitely hit them up.
Last bike event I tried to attend got shit canned thanks to a hurricane
>>
The Barber website doesn't come close to depicting the awesomeness of Barber. I bring my truck since it's a shopping trip for me. I park near the treeline at the tent camping area and hammock in the trees. Portashitters are cleaned constantly, food vendors are surprisingly good. Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club is next to tent camping and they have a larger turnout every year. They share space with AMCA.

>>
>>16378400
That's a strong argument. Do you have a garage?
>>
>>16378415
Get on Barber mailing list and order armbands/passes in advance to save money.
>>
>>16378422
>>16378400
And what bikes by the way?
>>
>>16378423
Hell yea. I like saving money. Much obliged anon
>>
>>16378422
>Do you have a garage?

Yes but I had multiple bikes when I didn't because fuck it. I managed to fit 1-1/2 Harley Ironhead Sporsters into two Air Force wall lockers while having a GS 750, Norton Commando and Triumph 500 twin tagged and running in the parking lot. Where there is a will there is a way. Rain is harmless when a bike gets ridden. I didn't bother owning a truck (fuck cars) until I was 28. I had bros with trucks and I'm a mechanic so the few times I needed one borrowing was never a problem.

Do what you enjoy. You can always change or upgrade, and most people in the US sell their motorcycles at very low mileage.

>>

>And what bikes by the way?

All are high mileage and most are cosmetically thrashed but self and latewife enjoyed the thrashing:

1978 Shovelhead Low Rider - Rebuilt but need to finish electric starter reinstall.
1982 Shovelhead - Low Rider Late wife's daily ride she bought new, somewhere well over 150K miles, runs fine. Tagged and ridden.
1982 FXR (Bought new, well over 100K miles, ran a long time without a speedo) with 1997 bagger integrated oil tank trans and primary drive. Tagged and ridden.
1994 FXLR (FXR for midgets) with FXRT front forks and bagger air shocks. Tagged and ridden
1972 Norton Commando. Rides well. Not tagged. Needs paint and a new metal fuel tank since ethanol permeates and destroys fiberglass stock tanks and no liners work. Scored Norton from dry storage so stock tank is going on a wall and will only be fitted if I sell it. Pajeet metal tanks are hit and miss quality so biding my time.
1972 T150V Triumph Trident w. Miles Engineering Rob North-style frame. Backburner project I got in Germany in 1982. All new parts except cases, some engine parts and hubs. Big D bore kit, Megacycle 1100 cams, Mikunis but I should probably get new Amals since they still make them.

Honda Interceptor, built from three by wife. Stored.
1959 Triumph Thunderbird 650. Drivetrain rebuilt, frame powdercoated. Semi-resto parts hunt in progress.

Thanks for reading my blog.

I've been wrenching since I was 18 so that helped. USAF fixed wing tech/mech at 21 and married a helicopter mechanic so we stayed knee deep in bikes, trucks, and equipment. Every hobby, every interest supplemented or complemented the others. There's a very large gearhead community which encompasses car and truck people, bikers, welders, machinists, and electronics/computer geeks who learn this stuff because we can't imagine NOT doing it. The price of admission is literally "DO IT, faggot!". /diy/ has many such.

Nobody flew out of their Mum's cunt with a wrench in their hand. Learn and be free of dealer analrape. Dealers have some very pretty buildings because in many cases that's how they got the franchise. This doesn't mean their mechanics will love your bike like you love your bike, and trainee/noobs usually do the periodic service.

If new to bike mechanics I suggest starting with common models with long production runs and large communities. You get more aftermarket parts, more Ebay organ donors, and more forums for support. Factory service manuals are your friend.

I wouldn't go quite that far. Look at Kia and Hyundai. They make legitimately decent cars now. Hell, I like how some of them look. What I don't like is you pretty much can't get a manual in the sedans and they're all FWD/front-biased AWD. Also, the Veloster is ugly, but some people go for the ugly-faced hot-hatch thing.
>>
>>16378630
its not the dogs fault the owners are too retarded to train it what is and isnt acceptable.

my dog knows to stay out of the road and not chase vehicles. also knows that bicycles and scooters are to be growled and barked at if they go too slow
>>
Undertail exausts only look good on 2-stroke bikes.
That is a fact.
>>
>>16378637
It doesn't matter if you want to drag the fault elsewhere because directly punishing the dog which directly caused the problem will indirectly punish everything which has indirectly caused the problem. Case in point, shooting the dog would punish the dog owner.

Hello Mr ATF

i agree to some extent, this is good for sentient beings like humans. but dogs and the like have no comprehension of what is right and wrong beyond what they get taught.
thus it comes back to the owners for not training or securing them.

That's exactly right! Training a dog well will ensure that you will not be subjected to a punishment of having your dog shot.

>dear blog

Finally done patching the rear fairing together with fiberglass and creating a stator cover guard after the track crash. Both turned out hideous but at least they're solid.

I bought some chinese carbon fiber and I'm gonna try to improve my composites game by covering most of the scratches on the fairing with it. It's hard to work with those materials without making an awful mess but I think I can learn.

Paid a visit to the tooj and it was wet, dirty and covered in moss. It's always good to go there though. Memories and such.

Also there's a track day in February, dunno if I'll go really. My rear tire turned slick on the right side, it'll probably be wet and I'm supposed to save money.

lol I had no idea this video was huge, I know the dude on the bike.

he helps organize and run beginner sessions designed to teach learners a bit of low speed skills so they can pass their P plate tests.

Nice guy.

If you had the slightest gram of knowledge about motorcycles you'd respect erik buell like we do too. The man loves motorcycles in a way few can and innovates in a way even less do.

I can't get angry for your ignorance though, just gonna let you know eventually you'll come around to seeing it our way when you're a bit older and wiser.

it's alright, you can stop patriotically sucking your fellow countryman's dick now, everyone knows only trash comes out of the US anyways

fuel in frame / oil in swingarm
underslung exhausts
ZTL brakes

Take a look at any modern sporty naked bike (MT-09 and such especially) and you will find the DNA of buells groundbreaking sporty naked bikes, aggressive mass centralization, stumpy short rear ends and an underslung muffler.

yeah then what counts as innovation in motorcycling to you lol? he invented things, other people copied them and it became the new standard. That's innovation, the world doesn't get turned inside out overnight and nobody goes from one thing to something completely different immediately, the evolution of the motorcycle from the early days to now is filled with thousands of these small changes that are assimilated to the whole.

Other people would have copied his brakes and fuel in the frame if it wasn't patented as well btw.
>>
>>16380022
The stuff he did that isn't feature-lists is harder to explain in a forum post (and hard to understand, and isn't talked about much other than SEA papers.) For example, Buell did a lot of work on stall-prevention/mitigation in their beginner bike (the Blast) in the late nineties, suzuki only brought their low-rpm assist to market this year. The approaches are completely different, but it's an example that comes to mind of where EB was innovating long before anyone else.
>>
>>16380022
If they're gimmicks why are manufacturers trying to put the fuel tank further into the frame to help with centralization in their supersports?
>>
>>16380022
oh and keep in mind he would have done a lot more where he not so stifled, he was working on a 1000cc v-twin superbike back in the early 90s that would have been incredible, corporatism happened, harley stole the engine, fucked it up and removed what was innovative/made it too big until buell didn't want it anymore and that's the donk you find in the harley v-rods.

>Buell did a lot of work on stall-prevention/mitigation in their beginner bike (the Blast)
and was considered one of the shittiest bike ever created for that because newbies kept crashing because the bike wouldn't stop after dumping the clutch
>>
>>16380439
people literally died on these bikes

>Before the Blast began to be used in training, the most expert of rider educators and administrators informed both Harley and MSF that the bike is too heavy for students to handle easily, too tall for its heavier weight, has too “torque-y” and engine for it’s weight, an “on-off” clutch with no friction zone, and while the brakes are excellent, they are not forgiving. The bike doesn’t stall out because it has so much torque and when students pop the clutch and the bike shoots forward, they grab on to the handlebars–and end up rolling on the throttle WFO. They predicted that serious crashes would occur—though they never imagined that training deaths would occur.

great innovation, more like how to make riding a nightmare
