hello guys merry christmas
>>
Dirt bikes and dual sports are the most low effort way to be "into motorcycles". It just seems kinda pathetic. Some guys choose to ride on the street where they can actually take advantage of the gyroscopic properties of their bike while some other guys choose to ride their little 125cc jokebikes around in their backyard through a mud swamp like a 12 year old. Cool story bro, you're like those middle schoolers that ride their quads around. Just kinda gay and childish, imo

I heard that harbor freight lift works but the metal on top bends easily. You get what you pay for.
I use a car jack with a block of wood. Works perfectly.
I've tried buckets, logs, and milk crates but my dr350's wheels still touch the ground. And if I stack anything on top of those for extra height it ends up feeling unstable. Sucks when you're trying to wrench and the bike is rocking back and forth.

Riding technical single track is more demanding than just "dragging knee" (with shit body position forcing the bike down just so you can get rid of your strips) and doing "whoolies" for the "gixxer brahs"

Get this: Anyone stupid enough to take the risk can lean their bike over more than is necessary for some corner on the street, while it takes a little more dedication and effort to do dirt

But in terms of serious riding, I'd say track riding, MX, and enduro are roughly equivalent

Looks pretty cute, I dig the Repsol livery. I'd ride it but I looked like a gorilla on a Ninja 250 so I'd be massive on a 125.
>>
>>16375552
i wonder if yurop limits people to 125cc to encourage them to race in an appropriate environment (since you can ride a 1000cc on a track even if you can't ride a 250 in the streets)

hence yurop's more practiced and passionate racers to america's squids that "just fuck around"

I'm going to get my license sorted in the new year so I'll be looking to get a first bike. I was thing of something in the 300cc range to start on.
My question is should I get something cheapish (250 inazuma is going near me for £1500) on the assumtion that I'll fuck up and drop it? Or should I just buy a nice bike (there's a Yamaha dealer near me selling a couple of 2016 r3's off at a discount) straight away?
>>
>>16376029
Shit bike first, or maybe a decent Ninjette (250-300). After you gain experience and comfort and have your first off or three, then get a nice bike.

Here is the thing about being a beginner: you don't know what you want yet. So it's very easy to meme yourself into buying something like a brand new Yamaha R3 or Ninja 300 when in reality both of these are terrible purchases for beginners.

You are much better off buying a used Ninja 250. If you want more power, then you can get away with starting off on a Ninja 500 or SV650. These are all perfectly adequate beginner bikes.

I work in a dealership and the most pathetic thing I see is people coming in and buying a brand new R3, Ninja 300, or the KTM rc390. They spent a shit ton of money on the bike new, then spend a shit ton of money on retarded 'mods' like slip-on, levers, etc.... and then literally sell it back to the dealership 2 months later at a $2500 loss

They aren't good value purchases. A pre-gen ninja 250 literally has like a 6 hp difference at the crank from an R3 or Ninja 300.

>Here is the thing about being a beginner: you don't know what you want yet.

That might also mean the beginner bike you buy outright without having the skills to ride down the highway and through the twisties for a quick test might end up being an uncomfortable little slice of hell in maybe a week

That's the real reason people sell their 250s. 250 is enough for the highway, but the bike as a whole is usually less than luxurious even when compared to a supersport.

Started my bike up today, first time in a while, and she made a click, almost sounded a bit like snapping, and then started. Any idea what that could be? I have video if anyone wants to hear/see.

I was waiting for a friend to help me take her carb apart as she'd idle low and stall, but seems to be better now. I think maybe it was because I put fuel stabilizer with 94 octane Chevron gas in her for winter? I've been told it's a carb issue and taking the carb apart is easy. What tools would I need?

I stalled her today and she won't kick over unless I give her 15+ minutes.

'98 XT350.

You stray too close to the edge of the pavement you're more likely to lose traction becuase of debris or simply going off the road.

Got the front end completely off the CBR today. It was just some rust on the steering stem making the top clamp stick on last time I tried but a little bit of hammering and I eventually got it off. I'm going to be putting some new steering stem bearings on it and maybe changing the fork oil.

While I have it in the garage I may also install a new master cylinder for the front brake.

Tried to bend my rear brake pedal back into shape today but I just broke the tip off so I'll have to buy a new one of those.

I don't really think the frame is that fat. It's pretty similar to their 450 rally bikes. I'm pretty sure the engine itself is most of the pigfat.

Test ride, determine if like, and study TRIUMPH forums (this is not one) of which there are many in Bongland.

It looks quite like the classic 1950s Triumph 6T. No foul in Triumph copying successful, industry-changing Triumphs. /dbt/ is mostly an Amerifat forum, Amurrica has an infestation of hipsters, the number of Americans who know any vintage Triumph history is microscopic, so this /dbt/ is absolutely NOT the place to learn about Triumphs.

>What's the deal with DBT and boipucci

Allesandro Boipucci was a famous Italian GP racer. Someone bragging they'll "rip ur boipucci" is slang for humiliatingly outriding you in racing, or in the case of ur mum, ur mum.

>>16375226
yeah but what if you want to change the fork springs?

I've used a cheap folding engine hoist for many years. A soft cargo strap will protect your frame or other lift points. They are pretty much the same. The advantage of slinging your bike is it won't tip over if you choose a sling area high on your frame. You can get creative about where your cargo strap goes, and if want can buy soft slings/straps for both trailer tiedown and lift use.

Example:

>>
>>16375906
>>can't get vise grips on the head cuz stock phillips button head

Obtain cheap hand impact driver which has been the standard solution to stuck crosspoint screws for many decades. Hammer forces bit into screw while rotating.

I suggest JIS screwdriver bits for carb itself. Vessel etc on Amazon are sufficient.
>>
>>16375954
Drilling the head off to take load off shank, then hitting shank with penetrant and gripping with visegrip often works.
>>
>>16376367
>I have video if anyone wants to hear/see.

Sure, why not? Remember MAKE, MODEL YEAR because sometimes it matters. Might be just a slightly weak battery resulting in the relay click being audible followed by proper start.

Make sure battery is happy, check resting voltage and if serviceable battery, check electrolyte level.
>>
>>16376430
Before you start, obtain some sort of manual or find a Youtube vidya or several of carb removal and cleaning. It's easy to do. Your bowl screws are typically closest to #2 Phillips. TAKE YOUR TIME and you'll be fine. I typically remove carb boot clamps to get them out of the way.

My carb overhaul kit pasta below. Print for reference. Your single carb won't need it all by a long shot, use as food for thought and use Pine-Sol.

Tray to work on, bright LED headlamp with narrow beam, magnifying glass, cheapass SIX point metric 1/4" drive socket set with a screwdriver and spinner ratchet handles, usual small metric combo wrenches, metric "ignition" wrench set, hollow-ground "gunsmith" style screwdriver or similar screwdriver bits, JIS multibit screwdriver, typical multibit screwdriver, set of #60 -90 drill bits for jet drilling, small visegrip to hold bits while spinning jets between thumb and forefinger to drill and debur, RUBBER TIPPED blow gun, a hunk of old throttle cable or bicycle cable (extract one strand as a "jet poker", I don't use welding tip cleaners because they are actually round files), small drill bits and screw extractors for removing EPA mixture plugs, and a five gallon pail I use to soak carbs in undiluted Pine-Sol. I pour the Pine-Sol back into the jug since it's good for a couple or three uses undiluted. You can pour it down the sink and your kitchen will smell like a G.I. party.

Nothing expensive in that list at all. BTW I never use a common wedge-shaped screwdriver on jets.

I use the cheapest carb spray I can find. Walmart toluene works as well or better then ripoff solvents with similar ingredients.

Harbor Freight ultrasonic (vibratory, really) cleaners speed things up and work fine with Pine-Sol. Avoid generic pine oil. Pine-Sol works better.

Hoard all the dead carbs you can stash no matter what bike if you expect to wrench often. Leave them assembled if they are not apart and they make convenient organ donors.

I found using those blue nitrile gloves underneath my riding gloves helps enough to survive the ride but I'm still buying heated grips/gloves when I get the money because it still sucks.
