anyone know anything about disabling oil pumps? i've got pic related which i want to use on wednesday, but the throttle cable is broken. the problem with this is that it has a Y split in the throttle cable to send to both the carb and an oil pump and i cant get one of these by wednesday for a reasonable price.

i see a lot of people saying they just remove the oil pump entirely and premix. will it be okay if i just connect a regular cable to the carb only, premix, and outright ignore the oil pump (not remove it from the bike)?

sorry i dont know a lot about bikes

I live in the UK and you need to pass a basic proficiency test before you're allowed on the road unsupervised. I've taken the course 3 times and didn't pass and it's annoying. That was months ago too and if I went again I'd be rusty.

I don't have any land to go and practice on, so handling becomes second nature, and I can't go on the road to practice without passing my practical test, it's utter retardation.

Any UK bros have any advice? I didn't have any friends with bikes growing up so I couldn't use theirs to mess around on.

It basically boils down to road safety and understanding the highway code, but getting correct answers in a book is absolutely nothing like driving/riding. For example in a book you get textbook questions with clear logic, but on the road there's all kinds of idiotic junctions with poor road markings and rights of way aren't clear, i.e. you can't tell if approaching traffic is going to move if you can't see the traffic lights from their side and while moving in traffic without much confidence it's really hard to react and know what to do.

Any resources you recommend? Should I just study the shit out of the highway code and pass the theory test first?

So my DRZ400SM needs to get a new tire set. At 5k miles i went with Q3's... 120/70-17 in front and 160/60-17 in the rear. Im now at 11.5k miles and on my 2nd rear and still on the 1st front. Front still seems to have a decent amount of life in it but the rear is almost out of rubber. Should i just replace the rear with another Q3 or go ahead and get a set of 2CTs?

V-Strom 650 vs G650GS

Riding through town for 11/12 months of the year, will need it for dirt roads and a little off road for the rest.

Is the idea that the strom being v twin has better speed but the thumper in the g650gs has better torque?

Which one rides better on the road?

What does starting on a smaller bike actually do?

From what I've seen, it just gets people comfortable with riding like the road is a track. And then because they passed a commuting supersport rider that was just trying to be safe (even if that same rider would dominate them on a track, with or without similar bikes), they are clearly better riders. They never do track days and yet their chicken strips are well worn. They don't care if they crash because gear is magic and their bike will still be worth the $1500 they paid for it. They're so cool, right?

They're idiots.

Start on a midsize. Do trackdays. If you never visit a track you should have chicken strips.

>inb4 hurr but i'm the better rider
Yes and the school shooter is a better marksman than the guy that never visits a range, but never discharges his arms where it's not appropriate either. Doesn't make him a better person.

Yeah it is! Sepulveda basin, theres hiking trails all over, very easy to get in, start from the road an follow this, it's a bit bumpy an theres a few curbs to go over, be careful if yer on a sportbike.

I haven't explored much of it, but near the dam theres alot of fields an shit to fuck around in, alot of random rocks so watch for that.

You in the area?

What's cool is, I talked to a guy who was workin there or whatever, I asked em if it was cool to fuck around there, he said no one would really bother you, they just don't want people taggin/sleepin there, the dam itself has (to my knowledgde) no one there most of the time.

on the forks? because the forks are never rotated the same, ever.
>>
>>16327263
It's my first time setting up adjustable front forks so I may be retarded, but the left fork only turns 3.5 times and the right fork turns around 5.5 times for the rebound damping. I'm going from a haynes manual and it says nothing about them being different. After working backwards from anti-clockwise the rebound seems to be working ok in terms of a second return time.

Having problems with my gs500. Will bring it to the mechanic but would also like to know your opinion.

If i pull the clutch completely so that the engine is not connected to the wheels it revs up on its own to about 3k revs.

If I engage a speed, revs go down depending on the speed I'm going at. so I can be going at a slower speed, in second gear, and the bike will be rolling on its own without me touching the gas, it would actually be accelerating slowly. In order to reduce the revs the only way is to pulls the brakes.

Any idea what it could be? The choke is not pulled at all.

Weirdest thing happened. I got on it today to get it to the workshop and it didn't rev up on its own anymore. I'll try again this afternoon to see if the problem persists or if it was a one time thing. If it is I wonder why it did that, though. It did even if I turned it off and on again.

By the way, I just realized this clear tube end is sticking out of the right side and I'm pretty sure it didn't use to be there. Should I care?

This bike is my first and I got it because I heard it was super reliable, but I'm wondering whether it was a good purchase. I'm not saying the bike is bad, but rather that it isn't retard proof, and might need more care that I know how to give it.

Daily reminder that the WR250 is a better bike in pretty much every way compared to the DRZ other being short less than 5 horsepower.

>fuel injection, no carbed bullshit
>modern aluminum frame
>modern suspension with USD forks
>lighter
>more comfortable seat and riding position
>less maintenance intensive and more reliable
>6th speed and the ability to gear it for good highway speed manners AND good offroad gearing without compromise.
>engine is balanced and smooth, doesn't try to shake itself apart on the highway
>better fuel efficiency, 70+mpg
>can be had cheaper on the used market because it doesn't have the DRZ meme tax.

Is Suzuki even trying?

The xs is a hog, heavy, won't turn, reasonably fast in a straight line. Not likely to inspire confidence if it's your first

Vf700 would be good if the cam isn't worn or chipped. If it's getting over 25k on the stock one, be wary.

Cb would be good but is going to be heavy. Not the end of the world but light bikes are better for beginners.

Look for a 550, gs, xj, or cb. 750 maybe too. Lotsa parts, generally reliable.

XS too bloaty, VF no fun to work on by comparison due to carbs + vee.
>>

Welp. Probably fucked up, not too bothered about it though.
>>
>>16327882
Take the bike back and learn to work on it yourself, in which case you will not be retarded and you will grow as a motorcyclist.

Tell them you are low on money and don't want to stick them with it while fixing your finances.

Then methodically fix one bit at a time. You can do it. Nobody flew out their mum's cunt with a wrench in their hand.

Bikes are simple and a very good way to learn to wrench. Assume nothing, ask questions, get a factory service manual, and the education you get will be worth more than fixing the bike, but you also get a fixed bike.

Do it, faggot! It's the beginning of a wonderful journey where you eventually won't care about dealers or farming out anything but machine shop work. Don't pay a mechanic, become the mechanic. Every complex task breaks down into small tasks.

You can do this.
>>
>>16328003
Thanks man, you're right. I need to get some space to start working on this shit myslef

>>16328002
>He's gonna ruin the engine by over-reving it before the first 500km.
>He's gonna crash in the first corner à bit wet

Nice knowing ya.
>>
>>16328078
Was warned about overrevving, trying my best to avoid it.
Pretty easy since I was a manual carfag for the last few years, so have been treating it almost like that out of habit. In general shifting around 5k at the moment (250 twin).
Somewhat worried about riding in the wet, probably going to hold off for at least a month before even trying.
>>
>>16328095
As à rule of thumb, the first 50-100km you never go past à third or the max rev, next 100 never past half max rev, then 2/3rd max etc, etc.
Same with new tires, brake pads and disks, you gotta use them slowly at first, then when à bit hot you can go harder on all of those.
And keep in mind to let the engine warm up properly before reving it up once it'll be broken in, less chances of mechanical fuckups.
>>
>>16328111
Cheers mate, I'll touch down the revs a bit then, 4.5 should be about the sweetspot.
>>
>>16328056
You can also plan to work with minimum space by breaking down the job into small tasks. Take more pics than you think you should, especially of hose and harness routing. Fuck memory, use photos. Your eyeball doesn't have a zoom function.

Don't just throw hardware in a coffee can. You can buy cheap Plano or similar clear plastic fishing tackle boxes for about four bucks each at Walmart etc. They have movable dividers and are ideal for sorting hardware.

If you need to remember what goes where in a pattern, punch holes in a piece of stiff cardboard to hold hardware and draw the outline of your part, for example an engine side cover, on the cardboard.

Little shop tricks make shit go much more smoothly.
>>
>>16328126
Good lad, you're gonna have plenty of fun !
On a last note, really take every dark alley and blind turn as if a car was gonna pop out of it, you'll never get surprised and will never panic break (in à turn -> mashing the front break will straighten the bike and you'll go straight out of the road).
Takes it slow, enjoy the ride and wear your gear !

I know im gonna get hate for this but what do you guys think about chinese bikes? I am broke and bought an Apollo DB-36 250cc for $1600 (something i could learn on and what not) but alot of people are giving me hate for buying Chinese and not going with a jap bike thats like $2000 more than what i paid for the china bike. It runs well as a trail bike and even with my big ass on it it still pulls. The bars are a little high but im fine with it
>pic related (is my bike)
>>
>>16328352
Oh and for you guys that may know, its really hard to start when cold and it take about 10 min for it to completely warm up, is there anything i could do to fix that? Im new to bikes and riding as i stated in the post
>>

In the UK 125cc huoniaos are well liked by their owners aparently.

>>
>>16328384
what so you mean with 'hard to start'?
>>
>>16328393
Its kick and electric start and when its cold i out the choke on fully but even with its on all the way it still will barley start. Its not a dead battery because it does the same thing when i try to kick it over. Then when it does start if i give it gas it bogs down and dies.

If it's jetted lean as it appears from the slow warmup complaint, you can remove the low speed jet, obtain a #60 thru 80 drill bit set, and drill the jet one size larger than the largest drill SHANK which fits the jet.

I grip the shank of the bit I'm using with a pair of visegrips, then rotate the jet between thumb and forefinger until it breaks through, then stroke back and forth a few times without rotating to debur.

If they sell low speed (NOT MAIN) jets you could go up one size, but there's nothing wrong with drilling a jet. Jets do not need to be perfect at a microscopic level though there are a lot of autismal machinists who think they should. A carb works like a toilet and is quite crude and tolerant.
>>
>>16328352
Chinese bikes are a massive mixed bag. Some are apparently quite good these days, being basically one for one ripoffs of the Jap 4.
Others are absolute crap.
Universally though, never seen any sold stock with acceptable tires.
>>

>DB-36 250cc
BTW get a factory service (not owner's) manual and study it.

Could you link me to a video doing that? ive never done anything on the bike other than change the oil and put gas in it lol
>>
>>16328539
Where could i get one for a china bike?
>>
>>16328363
If you have this particularly stupid carb design

https://www.youtube.com/watchv=LKs5VinYCts

you can remove the idiotic bowl screws as shown. The gent in the video isn't highly familiar with bike carbs or he'd know the epoxy over the fuel mixture screw is only tamper proofing.

OP could get another carb to work with and leave his alone for the moment. I would get another Apollo carb then figure out how to disassemble it, but you could also for a bit more money and less work, find a Mikuni. Check with other Apollo modders since I don't own one for precise carb replacement models and jetting.
>>
>>16328575
Thanks! I might just look for a Mikuni carb ive heard lots of good about them

>>
>>16328639
You need the same bore size (or slightly larger for more HP) and need to find out what others use for jetting.

You may have to alter the throttle cable but I'm in the US and don't have the stock parts to compare. Search for what others use and copy success. Mikunis conversions are very common. Sudco is the longest running US distributor but I don't know about the third world.

You want to read about tuning Mikunis too. It's easy but too few people study the literature.

Google "apollo mikuni carb swap" AND "DB-36 250cc Mikuni carb swap" because you may find good tips in general posts. Remember this search format concept when studying any technology. "General then specific"
>>
>>16328195
Oh and cheers for that response. Bike straightening out from mashing the front at speed wasn't something I was aware of, I'll have to give that a go in a controlled environment.
I've never really felt nervous or anxious on a bike, even though I just started. Probably since I have plenty of (push)roadbike experience and drive a manual.
But it's always good to be able to instinctively react in a situation.

I have a g650gs and was also torn between it and the Vstrom. Ultimately i got the g650gs because it was the same price (bought used for about 6K with 400 miles on it) and it came with spoked wheels, givi tank bag, a Saddlemen adventure seat, and has tall suspension for dirt. I put some metzler enduro 3 dual sport tires on it and its great in the dirt, as it is lighter too. i've ridden 2-up for about on a 200 mile trip at around 70-80mpg and it holds up: granted it only has five gears and it is buzzy, but the rpms were around 5k for cruising speed. This was between 2000-6000 feet elevation in the mountains.

Things i would/did change: taller windshield, barkbusters, luggage rack, belly pan, exhaust. I plan on making it my adventure bike to compliment my sport tourer.

I think the vstrom would be better for more endurance trips on the highway, but the g650gs will definately do it. Plus it takes 83 octane, and i get around 70mpg, so i really cant complain. if you can get one for around 6-7k i think its worth it.
