6L/100km for a 600cc sportsbike is normal ye. If you hoon it or track it you can get anything from 7 to 12 liters per 100km.

My air cooled twofiddy gets about 3L/100km commuting. 5L/100km if I pin the throttle @ 120km/h on the highway.

I wanna stop being a nobike, looking at a cheap used bike for commuting (Europe).
I'm looking at the Fazer 600 since it seems to get pretty decent MPGs while still being a powerful bike for the highway. The half fairings are also a plus since I do about half hour highway to and fro work.

Any other suggestions? I'm looking for basically a well rounded bike.

I mean, it is a great bike, but in comparison to it's rivals and counterparts, it always gets the worst rep in road tests. The faired SV650 (2004) onwards is also worth looking at, but keep in mkind it's a V2 engine
>>
>>16323405
What are considered it's rivals other than the SV650?
There's only one pre 2004 SV in my area. Doesn't seem like people are parting with their bikes or it's simply not a very common bike here.

Basically the other supersport derived 600s, the Suzuki GSR600, the Speed Triple and the Honda Hornet. The only thing that the Fazer seems to have worked out for it is it's slightly more comfortable seating position and the fact it has a, albeit small, fairing

I'm planning on getting the hornet, as it seems to the more refined motorbike engine and suspension wise, and the triumph is just too expensive

the FZ6 has an inline 4, 600 ccm engine, and the FZ7 (I think that's referring to the MT7, right?) has a parallel twin 689ccm engine. The MT07 is supposedly a very good bike too, but rather costly
>>
>>16323421
>xt660x and versys
he said he "still wanted a powerful bike"
>>
>>16323427
The GSR and Speed Triple don't are more powerful but don't get the same mileage as the Fazer...
I do quite a bit of commuting so something that gets over 7l/100km is a no go.
>>
>>16323490
it all depends on how you ride it. And the GSR and Fazer both have 98 hp claimed, which is more like 90 to the back wheels. The street triple has 107 claimed hp, which was tested and proven to be correct, even at the back wheel
>>
Is it normal for the brake lever to feel really firm after quickly using the brakes hard over and over?
Would this be something helped by new pads/rotors or messing with the oil / brake assembly?

>Should I start her up and let her idle for a bit just to get fluids moving and the bike de-iced?

Unless you are going to get the engine fully warmed up there's no benefit. Snow and ice are harmless, but if your commute is too short to fully warm the engine then warming it up prior is technically better for it.

I never bother to warm up my bikes longer than it takes them to idle decently, and mine are carbed. Engines are tolerant.

>>16324040
Depends on length of storage. If carbed, drain the carbs. I store my batteries indoors on a Yuasa tender.

>That requires more disassembly than I'm willing to do right now.

Just run the thing now and then. Engines are tolerant.

I put 45 psi in my tires and leave the bike on the ground. A motorcycle isn't the fucking Space Shuttle. Dry rot is independent of how you store the bike. It happens due to age.

>I'm pretty sure you're only a bunch of autistic guys.

They are. I've routinely left my Harleys outdoors, uncovered, through the winter. I'm a mechanic and hate extra work, but it creates none. Ancient mechanic here.

>well after 30 years he should have learned that it's better to lift it off the ground, but it seems like your mechanic just sucks.

I don't get flat spots, therefore elevation is irrelevant. If you have no air in the tires then elevation would be useful. I service mine.

All mechanical assertions, like scientific assertions, are TESTABLE. I test then choose accordingly.

Every spring since the 1980s I've had the questionable privilege of getting many "stored" bikes running because their owners stored them incorrectly. Vast majority let their fuel turn to varnish. If you store a bike, fill the tank with NON-ETHANOL fuel and run it long enough that you purge your system of any ethanol. A little gas stabilizer never hurts. Then remove the battery and store it indoors on a tender. A plastic tub contains both nicely.

Wax paint and chrome, and if your brake fluid is nasty replace it.
>>
>>16324712
Best way to remove nasty brake fluid is by plastic turkey baster. Then bleed until you get fresh fluid.

Most stuck brakes are due to moisture in old brake fluid.

45 psi is for STORAGE. That leaves room for any seepage between parking one in winter and firing it up in spring. Otherwise, I run 35.

My HDs are old and lightweight compared to newer big twins, about 600lbs ea. for both FXRs and Shovelhead Low Riders, but that doesn't influence storage tire pressure. I do the same for my ~400lb Norton Commando etc.

>Do GS500s really have such intense problems with the carbs?
>>out of balance
>>vacuum leaks

People unused to carbs tend to freak out for whatever reason. I ignore them and try to remedy their ignorance. I like carbs, I like EFI, and each has pros and cons.

They are just carbs. Clean them properly, make sure all gaskets and seals are new if rebuilding, and make sure diaphraghms are soft, supple and undamaged.

Remember these bikes have been around so many years that age is a thing on old rubber parts including carb mount boots.

Also remember that vehicle owners seem to resent buying a proper manual and try to use rocks, sticks and bones from roadkill instead of the inexpensive basic tools required.

Also remember vacuum petcocks fuck up when they get old. I prefer to block the vacuum lines and install manual fuel valves, but stock replacements work fine.

I found this for you tho I suggest you read a variety of articles on carb cleaning in general:

http://www.gstwin.com/carb_work.htm

I use UNDILUTED Pine-Sol (not generic pine oil) to soak carb bodies and parts at least overnight, though the cheap Harbor Freight "ultrasonic" (vibratory, really but who cares?) cleaner does a faster job. I use that at my bros shop after turning him onto them. If I did volume rebuilding at my house I'd get one but I have spare carbs for everything.

The cleaning techniques apply to any carb including mower, chainsaws, etc.

Don't bother with expensive commercial carb dips. I wish I'd heard of Pine-Sol carb dipping thirty years ago. It doesn't harm plastic either.

Vacuum leaks are voluntary. Fresh vacuum hose is cheap at auto stores.

Use FUEL INJECTION HOSE for fuel line! Avoid generic auto store "fuel line" and use Gates Barricade or equivalent. I buy it off Ebay cheaper than at auto stores.

Do not take apart carbs more than necessary. That's a common noob error.
I pull the slides, float bowls, jets, emulsion tubes, and mixture screws.
>>
>>16324934
You ride your bike

>>
>>16324993
Typical European youth scooter. Looks pretty clean though, did you maintain it or something?
>>
>>16324994
Save this pasta in case I'm killed or captured:

Dirty carbs have gotten me many good deals and a fair amount of side money.

My carb overhaul kit below. I suggest noobs or casual carb molesters print this list.

Tray to work on, bright LED headlamp with narrow beam, magnifying glass, cheapass SIX point metric 1/4" drive socket set with a screwdriver and spinner ratchet handles, usual small metric combo wrenches, metric "ignition" wrench set, hollow-ground "gunsmith" style screwdriver or similar screwdriver bits, JIS multibit screwdriver, typical multibit screwdriver, set of #60 -90 drill bits for jet drilling, small visegrip to hold bits while spinning jets between thumb and forefinger to drill and debur, RUBBER TIPPED blow gun, a hunk of old throttle cable or bicycle cable (extract one strand as a "jet poker", I don't use welding tip cleaners because they are actually round files), small drill bits and screw extractors for removing EPA mixture plugs, and a five gallon pail I use to soak carbs in undiluted Pine-Sol. I pour the Pine-Sol back into the jug since it's good for a couple or three uses undiluted. You can pour it down the sink and your kitchen will smell like a G.I. party.

Nothing expensive in that list at all. BTW I never use a common wedge-shaped screwdriver on jets.

I use the cheapest carb spray I can find. Walmart toluene works as well or better then ripoff solvents with similar ingredients.

Harbor Freight ultrasonic (vibratory, really) cleaners speed things up and work fine with Pine-Sol. Avoid generic pine oil. Pine-Sol works better.

Hoard all the dead carbs you can stash no matter what bike if you expect to wrench often. Leave them assembled if they are not apart and they make convenient organ donors.

Lastly, Google "removing carburetor welch plugs" for tips on removing the EPA plugs which cover fuel mixture screws.

I prefer an manual (not powered) hand drill for the job, or a drill bit in a Dremel chuck, or whatever gives you the most precise control.

Check your spark plug wires, caps, and ignition coils for solid connections. Could be disconnecting due to vibration.

Otherwise check to ensure that clutch is properly adjusted and not slipping or at wear limit.

You can, however, feel engagement and disengagement when taking off and have a pretty good tactile idea of how far you pull or release the clutch lever for a given result. Freshly installed cables often need readjustment after they are initially stretched.

If you gently pull the clutch lever with one finger you should be able to feel where it meets resistance, then adjust lever play per manual (or a couple mm). That doesn't necessarily mean any screw adjuster at the other end of the cable is correctly adjusted. Those are customarily adjusted first.

MMY matters because not all clutches are identical! When answering questions I apply not only my considerable experience, but some internet searching to produce a reasonable response. I don't just make shit up.

Obtain a factory service manual. Not the owners manual. It will more than pay for itself, especially the exploded drawings.

Takeoff shudder and odd clutch behavior would have me removing the clutch cover and inspecting to make sure the clutch hub nut hasn't backed off and that the clutch plates themselves are still in good condition. I'd also inspect the exposed area with a bright light for any crumbs of metal or clutch fiber.

Draining the crankcase oil into a clean, white or clear, tub and inspecting that for chips, shiny discoloration etc is a wise precaution.

That should get you closer to the cause.

Srsly the only advantage to usd forks is being rigid, which isn't even an advantage in many cases. Especially in off-road/trail/enduro bikes the slight flex of traditional forks can make the ride much less harsh for the rider.

Being upside down also totally fucks up the way the fluid does its job in many cases, meaning the conventional forks could provide better actual suspension characteristics.

Boots- waterproof vs vented which do you prefer?

I do most of my riding in warm fairweather conditions where the venting would be nice to keep my feet cool and not sweaty. However having waterproof boots would significantly improve my comfort in those rare occasions where I do ride in the rain, and also allow me to extend my riding a bit further into winter.

It's a choice of a slight advantage for the majority of the time vs a large advantage for a small minority of riding time.

I'll still reply because I have experience with this.

Vented boots 11/10 times unless you're riding in cold temperatures. The water doesn't really make a difference and normally the boots breathe more than well enough to dry out without a smell or any damage. The wet feet is a minor inconvenience but the wind dries them off fairly well so you're not left sloshing around in your boots unless you're riding at very low speeds constantly. If speeds ARE low, then not much is gonna seep into your boots and your feet will stay relatively dry anyway.

>>

Forks don't work if you just turn them upside down. Conventional forks keep the pool of oil in the outer fork tube at the bottom and can't draw from that when it's above the inner tube.

Good protection doesn't really come with not looking out of place. Best bet is to get some angle-highs and wear baggy pants to tuck them underneath.

Can't really help on brands that don't look out of place tho. I just wear my gear wherever I go and don't give a fuck about what people think of me.

>>
>>16326007

Overcharge? Or just sitting in the sun on a summer day (under the seat)
>>
>>16326005
If your battery is good I'd get a Yuasa tender and store the battery indoors. Plastic tubs work well for that.

If you don't have any issues with the stock battery I wouldn't spend more for a boutique battery. They are nice but best used on high-compression, difficult to crank bikes.
>>
>>16326015
yeah, overcharge. It's not really an issue if it's hooked up to an alternator though, they only really have issues when it's another battery.

Lithium batteries love a constant charge
