Welcome to Off Road General, where we not only talk the talk, but walk the walk as well... and will inevitably post lots of Toyotas. Is it me, or is there a serious lack of people who off road nowadays?

Meh. Great for overlanding because of the HUGE amount of inside space. Pretty bad for mudding because of weight and bad for rocking because of width.

You will just have to deal with the normies thinking you're some sort of small dicked prick than anything (despite old SUVs being more costly on gas, taller, and more dangerous).
Buyer beware as hummers have the reverse effects on normies as BMWs.

I swear the H2s are air suspension. The HMMWVs are IFS (as eloquently stated >>16293739) but the H2s should be solid?

>>16316925
Heeps being heeps.

Personally I think it's just that there are more of them on the road pushing over 300k and are bound to break down. As a result, more pictures are present of Jeeps being Heeps and more ammo for people to use against them.

Frankly, if you can get a TJ for $3000 or an XJ for $1000, Jeeps are GOAT in class (even considering the 2x more money you'd spend jacking them up)
>>
>>16316925
That's what it looks like when a crap axle breaks. There's nothing to retain it, outside of the diff, so the shaft just slides out.
>>
>>16316939
The air suspension was optional.

As long as you know your limits you're golden. Where I am it's forest trails, fire roads, and sand dunes. I just stick to anything not geared specifically for a dirtbike and I scout ahead most quad trails beforehand but most times I can find a way to fit.

That being said, if you think you'd be up for keeping those stickers available and dealing with distribution, that'd be awesome!

International Scouts in any trim cost a gorillian dollars and all the early 4Runners have rusted into oblivion.

Thanks for recommendations. Is there a best of the three I listed? I was leaning towards the Bronco because of how cheap they are, Ramchargers with removable tops are hard to find in good condition, and I swear nearly every K5 Blazer has been turned into a Woods truck and is 50% rust

I'm the guy with the bronco, it's fun but goddam man I wouldn't want to drive it in NY, it's a fucking tank to steer and gets like 12 miles to the gallon if I grandma it.
>>
>>16319041

My old 325is ran rich as all fuck and the power steering was on its way out.

I also use to drive pickups and a Ford Superduty stake bed. I loved the torque down low and that 460 V8 sounds the business when you get on it.

So tanky steering doesn't sound too bad and horrendous gas mileage is completely normal to me. You should check out the MPG thread on full size broncos, some guy modded his to get 20 mpg on the highway. It's pretty crazy.

IH Scouts and early 4Runners are hard to find without rust. And when you do find them, they'll be at rustfree Bronco, Ramcharger, K5 pricing +10-25% due to the rarity. These are good investments if you drown them in rustproof oil and keep them well maintained as the prices seemed to have dropped to an all time low in 2008 and continue to climb into 5 digits for low mileage ones.
>>16319018
You've owned an E36 which means you know some things about cars and swaps, no? And with your niche requests of towing and offroad (former is often pretty heavy for the latter), it might be worth getting one of those engine bay destroyed shells and putting an old Mercedes I-6 diesel or equivalent engine in. I've always wanted to buy an old Mustang and do that if I had the money.

Anyway, I'm rambling. Have you considered anything newer or even a Jeep? I'm looking every week on the local classifieds for a TJ shell under $1500.
I too wish to experience rolling down the highway with the top and doors off. Or driving down the highway in a blizzard with the roof off.

Weird quesetion... why would you mod a Bronco to get more MPGs? That seems like a very niche thing given the fact that those old two door offroads have the aerodynamics of a cinderblock.

I suppose that's what happens when German practicality and utilitarianism meets American muscle image. Pic definitely related.
Wish the 2016 Bronco could learn from that instead of being just another Jeep (so it appears right now anyway).

With the open space, you can probably fit two V8s in there giving you a total of 16 cylinders for maximum climbing power. Have one engine for the front axles and one engine for the front axles.
That way, you'll get chevrolet's non-firing sequence where only half of the cylinders are active to get those delicious MPGs.

It was a serious question not b8. Seems like people spend thousands of dollars to try to make their road vehicle be good off road when it can never be. And it's not like these people are doing it for utility. It seems most people just do it to go mudding on the weekend or whatnot.

Would make more sense just to have a stock 4wd pickup for utility since that can still haul a load of logs across the field or whatever else you need to do and buy a real off road vehicle for real offroading as the hobby.
Do as you will tho, I'm not complaining. I guess some of you might have fun with just building the project truck.

This town with you.

Mainly because it's my daily and work vehicle and when I finally drop my shit off to some farmer in the middle of fucktown, Onterrible, it's been nice to meet up with normies or just roll hills by myself. Sure a dirt bike, atv, or snowmobile would be more fun but there's another charm of being a cager filth off the road.

Remember that truccs and SUVs can carry dirt bikes and beds, too. I'd have to drive 1 hour before I could even use an ATV from where I live so might as well build your trucc/ SUV to handle it, too.

Anyone with a Heep Cherokee, what kind of MPGs do you get and how accurate is the gas gauge? Haven't been to the gas station since the first fillup, but it seems to be in the single digits. It's a '96 four-door automatic. It's cold and snowy, but I only need to put it in 4wd for a few miles each trip, so it shouldn't be this bad.

It's called a semi-floating axle and it's on every stock SUV. It's completely normal. This happens on any semi-floating axle when you break one.

Use your axles the way they were meant to be used and they will be fine.
I've done a lot of stuff with a locked D35 and chromo shafts. Stuff that people say is "impossible" because they think you have to power up everything.
>>
>>16320473
It's more in that the D35 is shit and nobody bothers putting parts in it if they don't absolutely have to for whatever reason. You could buy a decent axle for that money.

Thanks for all your work!

I met a taco on the way home at the gas pump - actually it was his "mechanic" who didn't really have any idea what he was dribing other than saying that he hated the suspensions. Disked, levelling kit, and increasing torsion would definitely do that to you.

32 Duratracs, V6, winch bumper, black with the same cap and back roof rack as you. It was starting to rust out, too and I guessed the year (2004) correctly to his surprise. Apparently the winch bumpers are only like $700 if you find a good enough store. Aftermarket rock rails, too along with a slider at the front.
Wish I caught the driver refueling and not his run-of-the-mill mechanic. Hmm.

Not a lot of 1st gens up north since they have a bit of a rust problem in wet areas.

I'm actually looking for some rock sliders once I'm done saving up after my other car got some new sway bars. Pretty excited to have some more armor on the truck
>>
>>16321299
This one was rusted to shit as Onterrible is awful with snow. Why are there more clean Rangers / S-10s than late90s Tacomas? Is it because of the sheer number of Rangers, S-10s, F-150s, and Silbers sold compared to Tacos?

I'm surprised the offroad trim didn't come with tube rock sliders like the old Rangers did. What are stock the skidplate placements like?
If you are exact with your measurements, you can bring a sheet piece of titanium and bring it to a sheet metal worker to bend it in any way you want for $30-$40 for the half hour of work, drill the holes yourself, attach some pre-bought/ tensioned L anglers, and bolt them onto your underside for very durable skids.
I haven't gotten around to doing this with mine as all my important shit is protected from the stock skids but my friend did this to his plow jeep to prevent random pieces of ice destroying his drivetrain like his oldie.

Rock sliders have saved my doors at least three times when slamming into a hill so that's a good idea. They're actually bent inwards a decent amount right now, lol.
>>
>>16321299
Is that a dodge dakota? I miss my old blue one.
>>
>>16321338
Toyota had some bad steel sometime between 98 and 04.

The stock TRD skidplates aren't great, but they've helped me from getting caught at the very least, so they do their job. Toyota also made a point to put armor on the transmission, gas tank, catalytic converters, and other spots on the underside which is pretty cool for when I'm throwing rocks around.

But yeah I'm excited to get some sliders

Breakover isn't terrible on the H2s.
They've got 1 ton IFS.
Sliders, upgraded tie rods, and a front locker and they do pretty good.

>>16316925
Semi float axles. When the axle shaft breaks, there's nothing to hold it in the housing since they're usually retained by clips at the differential. And of course the wheel is attached to the shaft, so they both work their way out.
With full float axles, the axle shafts only transfer torque and are bolted to the hub to hold them in.

>>16316939
>I swear the H2s are air suspension. The HMMWVs are IFS
H2s are torsion bar 9.25" IFS, coil sprung 9.5" 14 bolt SF solid rear.
H1s have coil sprung front and rear independent suspension with portals and inboard brakes.

Tinted headlights (closest color match)

I'm planning on:
Under mirror led floodlights (4led style)
Color match bumper
Color match grille
Factory tow mirrors (left in tow mode)
Rear facing led floods for reverse
Salt life decal
10 inch exhaust tip (gas engine)
Tinted yellow factory fogs, with yellow retrofit leds

Hmm so the H1s actually take over from the military grade ones. You'd think they'd learn from the military predecessor that people who buy them would maybe want to go offroad on them.
Torsion bar IFS might actually be otay for some offroading uses, no? I mean you already discount a lot of rock climbing due to the width so as an oberlander, it'd be GOAT

Regarding suburbs, that's good to know. I've only ridden in those newer scratch-them-and-it-costs-$1000-to-fix urbs and never actually drove or ridden one of the 9th gen or older ones. I suppose that deep down, they're still just an extended cab trucc with a permanent cover.

We'll have to check on the legality. His has emissions testing so we're not sure how that would work with the diesel swap but mine's exempt due to being an 8600lb GVWR 2500. If the DMV shuts us down on diesel swapping the 1500 then it'll go in mine and he'll get my 350.

>They're the same size as an extended cab pickup for the most part.
Same dimensions as a regular cab long bed of the same generation, shorter than an extended cab short bed which was the most common configuration for 90s models. In addition to that, GMT400s are tiny for a fullsize. 4 door Tahoe with sport mirrors is shorter and narrower than the average minivan. I used to have a picture of a late 90s Suburban parked next to an Excursion, there's a huge difference in size even though most people think of them as the same.
>>
>>16322353
I like the Navy F-150 collecting a Christmas tree in the back. How quaint.

If you have skid plates, that bullbar can mow down saplings up to 2cm thick pretty adequately, btw. Don't be afraid to disk your front suspension and go crazy.

>tfw my 1980 Lebaron I had in high school had more ground clearance than those modern trucks

What is up with vehicles getting so damn low to the ground the last ten years or so?
>>
>>16322379
Maximising M P Gs from less wind going under them. Every inch matters.

Besides. Most people who buy F-150s aren't offroading anytime soon other than maintained dirt paths. And those who are are going to get them modified where they don't even look like F-150s anymore
>>
>>16322330
>Hmm so the H1s actually take over from the military grade ones.
Yes, the drivetrain is essentially unchanged. Biggest difference was offering a gas 350 in the civilian models for a short while and the Duramax in the H1 Alpha.

As far as market segment the civilian H1 was more intended to compete with vehicles like Land Cruiser and Range Rover than something like a Wrangler. It was an expensive luxury 4x4.

>Torsion bar IFS might actually be otay for some offroading uses, no?
If you don't need much wheel travel then the 9.25" IFS is alright with a locker and upgraded tie rods. The 8.25 is weaker and doesn't have an available locker so while it's alright for basic occasional 4x4 stuff, it's definitely not for the off road enthusiast.
>>
>>16322372

Blue truck in the back was the first vehicle I bought new when I was up in AK. Got married, twin boys, wanted a backseat. Ordered a truck and when it arrived gave the blue to my sister to drive.

8ft bed is a must, both trucks have that.

I dont push them too hard. Blue has 30k miles on it and Green has 9k.

Currently my buddy and I are restoring two willys for doing some simple cross country off roading. Will try to post pics at a later date

>>16322379
Clearance is pretty terrible. Pretty sure they do it to meet those MPG requirements. Taking off the front damper will give an extra 3in clearance but lose 2mpg. I figure if I get in a situation where I need the clearance I will just ram through it and replace it.

I mostly use my truck for hauling lumber for woodworking. So the mpg bonus is nice. Usually around 14/15 city and 25-27 hwy.

When I upped 2 inches on my Ranger, my em pee gees fell by like 1.5. Imagine disking the F-150 3 inches as he mentioned (2 em pee gees sounds low, desu).

Despite clearance, taller isn't always better in many cases. Unless you live right beside your offroad lea. Then taller is always better.

I'm actually a freelance mechanic, so I do have experience with swaps. I just didn't want to deal with swapping this since it is supposed to a DD. If it managed to shit the bed, then sure. A diesel swap would be cool, but I'm trying to start away from big stuff like that since I lost my garage space not long ago and working on your car in the street isn't looked upon very well in my neighborhood. I do have a Subaru project planned out though. I'm looking for about 450 crank horsepower with a EZ30 in a 2.5RS shell. Porsche like sounds in a stripped out parkway weapon.

>>16319226

Anything to save money for other projects is always appreciated. I won't be lifting it or putting bigger tires since in NYC, the most offroading I'll do is the occasional park trail or fire roads upstate. Most of the mods are focused around derestricting flow of air and exhaust. I think it's good if it doesn't rob you of power or torque.

>>16324273
I got told that the stock hooks have been exceptionally shite and dangerous when pulling out F-150s so I would expect the same from the Ranger. This could be true since anyone who actually offroads a Ranger probably has a winch or skid bumper and never actually utilises the stock recovery hooks so Ford never improved them (like Remmington with the soft trigger/ safety failed until someone actually died from them).

I would say that if you remove those and find an adequate area to bolt new ones onto the frame through the existing hole, you should be good

I mean, it's more fun to make big things go through things they're not supposed to go through. If you can just strap an engine to two wheels and drive through, you might as well walk.

Plus it's much more practical to have a vehicle that's street legal and can romp in the mud. Trailers are a pain and really limit your spontaneity.

That's a crazy temperature change. I thought it would be the other way around (i.e get colder as it gets higher)

Mine is a diesel. It's a 6.5 pre-Duramax turbodiesel. Mainly designed for economy in the days before the torque and towing wars American trucks compete in today. Because in all reality, everyone buying these things nowadays apparently need to tow a 200k kilo trailer according to the manufacturers...

It's not a perfect motor but I'll make it work haha

They're complaining because normies drive SUVs now, and the bumpers are too high causing more damage to cars. So now ground clearance takes a hit so the bumpers can be lowered to hit car bumpers.

If I were to get another one, what should I take into consideration/are there other option in the same size class? The rusty flatbed was a 86 w150 360, it was actually a fully optioned sno commander truck from North Texas that migrated to Florida.

The two tone short bed was a 93 w150 5.9 Magnum that is currently getting a 400 big block swapped in

The brown long bed is a 84 w150, my current DD a former U.S.M.C truck, 225 slant six with a np435 4speed.

The ugly bastard is a 73 w300 that started life as a stubby military aircraft tug truck then was bought by an old man who extended the frame, cut out the back of the cab and built a sleeper and installed a 5th wheel hitch and used it to pull a car hauler trailer around then he sold it to the guy I got it from who pulled the 440 and rebuild it to put in his 74 duster but decided not to and stuffed it back in the truck, lost interest and sold it to me for $1200

The lift springs and tires off of the 78 I got the 400 from is going on the 73 and I'm going to build a flatbed for it and mount a couple bench seats and maybe a stripper pole. How many trees do you have to mow down to cross the forests in Norway?
Up here, the more north you go, the more granite you see and once you past the huge 2000km long piece of granite called the Canadian Shield, you get clay fertile soil with large trees and small saplings which even a stancefag can mow down. Lack of rocks make it easier too.

Forest driving here is kinda annoying as I've now completely destroyed my valance. Bonus feels: mountain.

General answer; no

There are certain areas that are open, but these are closed-off areas and are especially designated for offroad driving, with prefixed trails and such. Then there are yearly events that work pretty much the same way

We have a law that effectively bans the use of all forms of motorized vehicles outside of public roads, private roads and grown cropland. So basically; forests, uncropped fields, plains, roads that aren't designed for cars (lumber machine roads, horse paths and such), ontop of ice or through low rivers and so on are all illegal

Unplowed roads are also illegal
>>
>>16334454

That being said, if you get a landowners permission to drive on his property you are good to go, really
>>
>>16334454
That's rather unfortunate. On crown land in all of Canada, you are allowed to drive anything you want that follows with municipal and country regulations (which virtually none prevent driving on the land. It's harder to carve your own path south of a specific northern area but it's allowed.

But at least you get the trails, I suppose. Is oberlanding just not a thing in Northern Europe.
>>
>>16334619
Are you sure? They way I've read it and also had it told is that you need a special permit from the officials to do any form of motorised activity in what they'll call "outmark", which are the things I described it >>16334454

If I remember correctly a land owner can restrict & ban the use of motorised vehicles on his own land, but not give permissions to people to use motorised vehicles on the "utmark" that he owns

>>16334625
It is, but its not big in my country as it has to happen along public roads in Norway. Swedes and finns do quite a bit of it, and norwegians like to do it in those places & Russia

But this was the first offroading I've done in several years and I wasn't prepared.
Ended up taking the inside panel off my tailgate and dug myself out. Took an hour and a half to get unstuck.

Thanks.
I had an idea of something like this.
But I looked em up and jesus fuck if they aren't expensive for what they are. I might just make my own, doesn't seem that complicated.
And I forgot I have an e-tool. I'm gonna make a note to put it in my truck.

Umm.... I don't know if I'd want to do it in the wintertime. There's some precarious bridge crossings and the last thing I'd want is Ice on them...

If you have a 4x4 the best thing to do is stop as soon as you stop moving forward, lock it in 4low, but it in first and SLOWLY creep forward until you're out.

If 2wd all you can do is hit it fast and keep up momentum until you're out of it and if you get stuck try to rock it back and forth with low wheel speed. If you're already stopped and just stomp the gas you will bury your shit.

Hey sup /ORG/ looking into getting my first OFF ROAD VEHICLE soon and am on a good little budget. I'm pretty set on a Jeep Cherokee XJ, how's this one look?

- 160k miles
- already lifted
- probably 32-33" tires
- nice roof rack
- led bar

The leak he's talking about is probably the rear main seal and it's ~$500 for a shop to fix it, so I think i can use that heavily to my bargaining advantage.

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb/cto/5922392159.html

P.S. This is the checklist I'll be using basically as a bargainer's advantage sheet lol: http://pastebin.com/RtsdWw78

Any advice? Yay/nay/what seems like a fair price?

wouldnt be surprised if it was rusted out since it has va plates in the pic.
ask him for undercarriage/engine bay shots. id also get some interior pics while you were at it.

This guy's alright.

1. otay miles. you can probably put another 50-100 on it
2. how did he lift it (disks, shocks, combo, lics, etc)
3. nice tyres. measure the tread
4. very nice rack. if they're HID fogs (and four of them), that's worth a good $1000 right there.
5. not a buy up

Addendum:
Tow bumper looks very solid. Those normally connect to a front rock slider so he might have built the undercarriage to boot, too.
That could be new paint but it could be the lighting. Check for actual rust.
>automagagic ):

Otherwise bring your OBD reader and go take a look.

Alrighty, /org/, I'm all done with school for the semester, which means I can get back to working on the sticker.

So far, I've re-sized it from about 300px wide to 800px. Obviously this means that I have to re-draw most of the linework since I lose a lot of detail and cleanliness when I re-size it like that.

I've done some cleaning already in the bumper and hood areas, so there's an idea of what it'll look like once it's done.

Enjoy and get hype!

I did. Currently in truck.

>>16337885
I got semi stuck again and that's more or less what I did. I've never had 4x4 before and this was my first time using it. There was a point where the truck seemed to be moving just by the front wheels very slowly and the rear wheels just kinda spun, but it was moving. This actually allowed me to leave it in first and get out in the bed and smoke a cigarette while I waited to get to harder ground.
And it's an electric switch and I found it can take a minute to go into low. Can't figure out how to get to make it switch over right.

NICE. How'd you tell that just from the pic?

32s fit snuggly into wheelwell with rubbing only when fully turnt. I can't bear to get the 2inch key lift since the 32s already knocked my MPGs down by 2 and I can't afford that since I do HWY dribing for a partial living.

Also, if you have a young enough Ranger, the tyres match your engine. Watch:

If they're fog lights then there's no reason to put them on the roof.
They look like the $20/pr autozone fog lights
It would cost $60 to HID swap them.

I'm $220 into five Hella Rallye 4000s. Just need to replace one lens and order 75w HIDs.

At least that's what the hick farm's sons do up here.

Also some people have solid "mowing" bumpers used like cow catchers and mount fog lights on the roof rack to save their $200 each bulbs. The only place to put a whole rack is on the roof.

That being said, you're like 99.9% right, though. I just wanted to give some reasons why people do choose to put them on the roof.

Which HIDs were you looking into, btw? I just got some KC with covers and am gonna shove them into the grill if I have enough space. If not, I guess I'll have to mount them right above the bumper. They were cheap enough on amazon so I'm happy.

Nothing wrong with lights on the roof. But if you're going to put lights on the roof, you don't want a fog beam.

I WAS going to do ebay 75w kits, but I might do Acme 75w ballasts with Morimoto bulbs. $63 per light for bulbs and ballasts isn't terrible considering how cheap I got the lights.
