How's the conversion on the Wahmbulance going?

>>16298634
Washing salt and snow from my winch. Going up north this time of year is surreal since it's already winter condition North of Barrie and when you get down south into Toronto, it's like Autumn again with the dry, salt-less roads.

10 cm of snow for Toronto on Monday though which means 15-20 cm up north. Wew! can't wait to hear the crunch of the tyres against deep snow again.
>>
What happens if you stall your car when in engine exhaust deep water?

I stalled when it hit a rock that I didn't see underwater but immediately restarted the engine and it was fine. I think the water level just reached the door seals and I was blowing bubbles from the exhaust. It drives fine right now but has some random engine lug moments.

>>

Not unnecessary since if you only have little pebbles and shallow water, you'll be able to rush through that paths going 40 where everyone else in their stock Jeeps will be trying navigate it at 15-20. Quick rollies.

My mud terrains were pretty shit in the snow last year, so I'm thinking about buying dedicated snow tires. Is there anything that will work well in the snow, but still be decent off road? I won't be doing a ton of off roading over the winter, and when I do, I imagine the trails will be pretty snowy anyway, so I think they'd perform pretty well in both situations.

Right now I'm thinking 265/75/R15 Firestone Winterforce UV on my old 15x7 D windows.

chains. depending on where you live, this is the cheapest option to dig into the snow and ice. you can even get used ones depending on where you live. just make sure you check for metal fatigue and obvious rust.

the worst part of upgrading to 33s without a lift kit is i can no longer toss chains around my ranger's tyres since it'd absolutely obliterate my wheelwell

It's a marathon not a sprint haha. Still trying to plan it out in detail. I'm at the stage where I can't do much until I completely gut the interior and redo the electrical system to my liking. And I'm projecting at least 2k on the conservative side to do that...

In the meantime I'm throwing small stuff at it. For instance I bolted up a pair of tail light brush guards to compliment the one up front.

Been snowing like a bitch the last few days. Got 6" already and we're supposed to get another 7-10" by tomorrow morning. If I didn't work 3rd shift all weekend I'd be up in the woods camping haha.

btw from my experience with stickers, creating a printed sticker is different from a cut out, so im assuming you guys are planing to make a printed sticker because the image contains more than one color. Witch also is more expensive to make, and uglier because the sticker has to have a colored background or clear background. So if you want to make a printed one, add colors so it's cooler because if you have 2, why not go all out.

is this the 4x4 thread?
if so, is it safer to engage 4x4H on the roads today (we're getting a lot of snow)? What's the difference between 4L and 4H? People tell me not to use 4H on pavement because it fucks up my engine

>>16304539
so, engaging 4H or 4high, is the same gearing and you regular 2wd gearing. 4H will simply give you better control on the icey road, it will not cause any damage, but remember when you park or are not driving, put you car back into 2H/2wd. 4L is 4 wheel drive, but it seleccts a lower gearing, 4low. 4low simple makes you car slower but give extra tourque, DONOT used 4low unless nessesary, and do not shift into the higher gears in your transmission while in 4low.
2H: normal driving
4H: off road/bad conditions where additional traction is needed
4L: Used generally only for offroading and crawling

This will not hurt your car, it's there for a reason. But using 4H on the road in regular dry conditions does put unnecessary stress on your drive train. Again only use 4wd (4h) if the conditions are bad and you need it. The most common problem is people using it when they don't need to, or people thinking they are invincible and driving to fast in bad conditions. Stay safe senpai.
>>
>>16304539
4hi is a 1to1 output from the transfer case and 4lo engages the gear reduction

Generally it is ok to run 4hi on the road for short duration and under 55mph.

>People tell me not to use 4H on pavement because it fucks up my engine
It's not going to hurt your motor, but it will place strain on your driveline and tires.

Basically true locked 4x4 doesn't have a differential between the front and rear axle, so when you are turning on pavement, your front wheels are being over driven, esp if you've got a locker or LSD. This wears your tires and your driveline faster than if you were off road or in dirt.

The other possible problem is some systems don't rate their front end complements for high RPM load, so if you drive too fast, you could spin your front diff or driveshaft to death.

When conditions are legit slippery, none of these are a factor.

Do a donut to check conditions.

>>16305018
Curb weight. We're talking about reality of you treading through mud. It's simply too big.
And if you tried to build it for rock climbing, the amount of lift and the 200lb tyres you put on it would absolutely negate all the work you put into it.

I'm not ragging on the vehicle, though. It just isn't built for that porpoise. You have to respect the porpoises for which the vehicles are built as whale.

4WD will help with getting moving but that doesn't necessarily mean more control. This misconception and false sense of security is a reason why 75% of stuff stuck in the ditch in the snow up here are 4wd stuff. Also, since you have the front wheels engaged as drive wheels prepare for understeer. This is why I personally hate using 4wd in snow unless ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.

As far as 4Hi vs 4Lo other anons answered this and they are correct so I will skip this one.

Using 4wd on DRY pavement won't necessarily fuck up your motor, but it puts a shit ton of stress on your drivetrain. Reason being is when the transfer case is locked into 4wd, all the wheels want to turn at the same speed. When you turn this becomes a problem because 4 wheels travel 4 different distances and need to turn at different speeds to compensate for this. While full time 4x4 and AWD can compensate for this, most 4x4 trucks cant, so don't use it on dry pavement. And if you do, just don't turn...

>>16304996

But yeah, desert rolling is pretty niche and so is FJ cruiser. I think it's just that all stock pickup truccs (F-150, Ram 1500, Silber1500) are so alike nowadays, the only way they can sell them is brand loyalty.
I remember having a conversation with another Rangerfag at the gun range the other day and I brought up my old Colorado and he was like "what's that?". I told him "it was my old chevrolet pickup th-" and he immediately cut me off and said "oh I don't like chevies. don't bring them up around me".

>The transfer case, an engineering marvel, combines the expected 2H, 4H and 4L with a clutch-based torque-on-demand system that turns the Raptor into an all-wheel drive truck. While 4H distributes the torque in a 50/50 split, this technology, called 4A, instead puts torque to whatever wheel needs it most, making the Raptor handle better on the pavement in inclement weather.

Really want an FJ 80 Land Cruiser, but around here they're like $10k with ~150k miles. That's pretty steep for what it is in my opinion. Is there some reason why they hold their value so well? And what makes them so good for off roading? If I did end up buying one, I'd just do a small lift, bigger tires, and probably some bumpers for recovery points.
>>
>>16306538
Stock offroader because 20cm of stock clearance, an otay amount of storage, and good undercarriage. Built for mudding with some rock climbing potential in stock.

The reason they hold onto value is because despite selling a SHITTON of them, you don't see them on the streets much and they're... weird. They're very, very weird.
>>
>>16306571
Weird how? Like they're just kind of odd, or weird in the way they're built or in a mechanical way? Just found a pretty decent looking one for sale and I'm thinking about asking the guy to trade for my bike with a little cash on my end, then selling my XJ and keeping this as a new daily.

It's a gray 96 with 202k and from the pics it looks like it has a little rot starting on the drivers rocker, but that's nothing unusual in New England. My XJ has rot, too.
>>
>>16304281

They are weird in that they're just not... standard looking. Find another vehicle that would be the FJ's sister ship. You can't.
You'll run through cars like "hummer body but rounded" or "taller jeep (or FJ40)" but none of them really matches the outlier that the FJ cruiser is. It came with one engine option and made a completely separate aftermarket community since it was made as an offroader so it needed the potential upgrades that only an aftermarket community could give.
It's hard for companies to make a vehicle itself wanted by the public let alone warrant a whole aftermarket subsection dedicated to it.

I wouldn't be surprised if jeep sales dropped because of the FJ cruiser sales rising. It just creates a new bubbly aesthetic to the square-body dominated offroad community with the Jeeps and Land Cruisers and G-Wagens and Defenders. As cars got more and more rounded, offroaders and oberlanders didn't. This thing stands out.

None of this shit is a bad thing, btw. It just adds to the resale value. You might be used to it already since you dribe an XJ but be wary of daily driving this thing because muh em pee gee

Not worried about MPGs. My XJ gets low teens on a good day. More concerned about reliability and how well it can take a beating. I kind of beat on my XJ and don't really take care of it, but the thing doesn't care. It runs kind of shitty, but it's my beater so I plan to run it into the ground anyway.
>>
>>16306678
It's a toy yoda. If my friend's over-priced 2012 RAV4 can take a beating, an FJ cruiser with ridiculous stock ground clearance built for offroad by toyota should have no issue.

Treat it a bit better than the XJ, though, will ya?

Yeah it was some kinda scam.

Waited at the spot for an hour, he finally showed up after telling me to be patient. Ran fine, needed brakes, was set to buy until seller heard it wasn't cash, but a check. He got very nervous and told me that was a problem. I told him that I don't carry cash to Craigslist car transactions and that I told him last night that it was going to be a check and he said that'd be fine. He then told me that I couldn't have it because someone had already put 100 down on it. I reminded him that last night he'd said just the opposite, that someone was going to come put 100 down on another one he had but never did. He didn't like that at all. I thanked him for wasting my time, told him not to call me again, and drove an hour home.

SCUM. BAGS.

That's not the issue. The issue is that the mutual parties themselves agreed to the terms and then the seller just decided to feel uncomfortable at the last minute like a werido.

Tip, though, anon - a lot of people don't actually read the emails if they're longer than a paragraph. It infuriated me when I was discussing a fucking VEHICLE over email with people and they'd only read the first paragraph until they met me.

i agree that is a bit steep though. prices on these have shot up in the last year or two.

>what makes them so good for off roading
-solid front and rear axels
-coils and shocks all the way around
-wheel wells can stuff huge tires with ease
-insanely reliable
-the perfect size (just enough room to house all your gear/sleep inside, but not so fuckhuge that you cant get it down tight trails)

I have to ask. You went with LED AND HID? Why both?
>>
>>16312498
HID for beam patterns that perform better when controlled. For instance the PIAA 520 fogs make infinitely better fog lights than Rigid DOT LED fogs. The Hella 4000s have significantly more range than any half way affordable LED options, and without overpowering foreground.
The LED bar I chose for flood lighting because none of the affordable LED bars have optics up to the task of generating a complex, controlled pattern. They throw light everywhere. Terrible for a fog beam or spot beam, but great for a simple flood beam.

You must be thinking of all wheel drive not 4 wheel drive

Regardless, it wouldn't make a noticeable difference
>>
>>16314056
In a conventional 4wd, it's either everything or the rears, sorry.

Also, if you want the best MPGs, anything 4wd is a bad choice to start out with. Even if you could theoretically select just the front axles I doubt you'd get any noticeable MPG gain. To top it off you'd be seeing more wear and tear on your front end so it could end up costing more in the long run.

Hey Tacofag. Go get our clammy /ORG/ shekels by emailing the design to:

[email protected]

I sent:
"Hello!

The off-road-general subthreads have been trying to make a few stickies and are generating something that looks like:
http://is.4chan.org/o/1481496996145.png

Would you have the ability to print off a few of these and what would be the minimum purchase?

The Tacofag who is creating this has work and exams so I suppose this won't be done for at least another week but am just gauging interest for now."

Responded with:
"I can make them, pricing really depends on how many you want.
The other option is if you want me to stock them at watracing.com I can compensate you for the design."

Equivilant of a niche First Gen 4runner commanding $20 000. Either that or a man wanting to sell due to wife not being a waifu.

It's not complete yet. I asked him to put a feelsman because it's great to save and put as an avatar if I begruggingly join an offbro forum. Otherwise, you might be right.

Still a work in progress as tacofag has exams and work and life.

Yea there's another two or 3 I know of. I forget his name but it's the white/gold one with the topkick handles >>16312488, There's the guy from last thread putting in a 6.5 >>16312468, And another one or two who I can't specifically remember.

Kek on the antler mod. It actually turns a bunch of heads. It makes my day when I see people do a double take, then chuckle as I get thumbs up haha. As far as tires go, they're the same ones as before. Getting worn though, it doesn't show up in the pic as well. There's a guy on CL selling a set of rums with BFG ATs on them, it's tempting...
