Should I change my tire or does it still look good?

Do you guys run them till the tread runs out? Hasn't hit the wear bar yet but it's near it, will probably taking a trip to LA for Xmas so I'm wondering if it still has another 800 miles in it.
>>
>>16279175
Id change it simply because it is not a very good tyre.
But no it is fine otherwise.

I've heard everyone say the Anakee 3 is a shit tire but why? It came stock with my GS and I haven't had any issues at all with it, both in touring and hitting the twisties in any weather. Of course I haven't really been on other tires so i have nothing to compare it to. I changed my front to a tourance Metzler and will change the rear too when it wears out.
>>16279207
It's Anakee 3
>>

Season's really, genuinely over, lads. People still had their bikes out last week. Maybe I'll see a trike or two if it warms up a bit after xmas
>>
Should I get a dual sport even if I don't go off road? I just want something to cut back on gas and daily drive. Don't want any faggot sport bike. Something that you sit straight up on. Dual sports look cool but is it really worth spending $7K at least on a dirt bike with headlights? I feel like the prices are such a joke because muh wheelies and muh consumerism.
>>
>>16279227
look on amazon for a tire iron

set depth to 1/16 higher than the deepest tread and start making it a knobby tire
>>
>>16279244
>don't even go off road
So on a day off, go find an OHV area, dirt, and/or forest roads.

As a guy with a DR650, get yourself a top case (or right up a milk crate; cheap+decent=just fine), and ride the piss out of it. Yuuge aftermarket if you want to tinker with the thing. Not a fantastic bike out-of-the-box, but reliable, reasonably efficient (Hondas are pure fucking magic if you want supreme economy), and easily fixed if you rekt.
>>
>>16279244
Well for $7K there's really not many other options than a used squid bike or a shitty 250cc cruiser that can't go over 55 mph comfortably.

I don't know much about touring bikes but my Dad owns a CTX700 and it's a very comfortable ride. It's ugly as shit though.
>>
>>16279304
On a day off, I go fishing. Can't take a bike in the ocean.
>>
>>16279321
you go fishing literally every day you are not working?
that sounds fucking boring.
>>
>>16279350
I meant on the weekends. After work during the week I'm cleaning my house or shopping. Adult things you do when you live alone.

>wasting gas speeding through the woods
>or having girls asking to ride on your boat and fuck you 15 miles offshore
>>
>>16279372
¿Porque no los dos? Open yourself up to more kinds of adventure. To me, it's not about just speeding innawoods, but more the seeing new places, exploring, and, honestly, the solitude.

If that's not your thing, then get something like a Thruxton. Decent little machine.

after you learned the basics, how long it took you to go out on the streets by yourself? i assume everyone is nerveous as fuck in the first "actual" ride
>>
>>16279494
I learned the basics when i was a child.
>>
Is this a good deal? and how much would it cost to fix the engine spun a bearing part?
>>
>>16279494
I met CC81PT soon after he moved to NM. He put me on his little XR 100 and then I was hooked. Six days later, I bought a DR650 and rode in the local off-road areas and dirt back roads developing some basic skills before my MSF class slot finally came up. Got the certification, got my endorsement, then started riding to work and everywhere else. To be honest, the first solo "street" ride was no big deal. I was slightly nervous, but rode not dissimilarly to how I drive (head on a swivel, blinkers, etc.) and was perfectly fine. Of course, I waited until I was 30 to start riding; starting younger places you at a distinct advantage except for insurance premiums.
>>
>>16279244
>Dual sports look cool but is it really worth spending $7K at least on a dirt bike with headlights?

No, do not buy a brand new dual sport. There, I just saved you thousands of dollars. Look at what you can get on the used market..

Tooled around in a parking lot on friend's bikes a few times, less than 5 minutes each time and poorly.

Did an MSF class.

They failed the entire class on the skills test(except the literal perfect kid who rode dirt from age 5) because reasons. Seriously everyone else failed by a single point or completely.

After I went back 2 weeks later and easily passed the skills test and got my license, I went riding the next day.

Took the bike on the back roads to work early Monday morning and left early that night to avoid traffic.

A few days of that and I was confident enough to take the parkways to work which lead to my first altercation.

>riding my cuck-fe XS400 on the parkway
>base Robert Moses built the parkways so trucks and buses physically can't go on them
>as a result they are car and motorcycle only
>get tailgated on the ramp coming off at my exit

>"cars only!"
>"cars only!"
>ride off, she rides my ass in traffic
>hangs out the window screaming about calling the cops
>lane split to get away
>pull into lane in front of what I though was a co-worker's car
>right ahead is a cop

I was actually shocked to find I failed, and even more shocked to find the rest of the 10 of the remaining 11 also failed.

There were 2 guys who CLEARLY failed, one literally walked the bike everywhere and the other did fine all day but dropped the bike twice during the braking test.

Everyone else did pretty okay, there were a few people who did clearly better than I did (nearly perfect) and got told they failed by a point, and people who did slightly worse than me who also got told they failed by a point.

I think they were fishing for more money since when I went to reschedule the skills test they tried pushing private lessons(and from asking around everyone else).

Aside from obvious things like the engine, brake pads/rotors, and chains/sprockets, what can wear out from mileage on a sportbike?
>>

the tires hurr
the grippy things on the handlebar that I don't know the English term for, but basically everything you touch can wear out

Cables, obviously. Those little rubber chain guides/rollers. Every bearing. Fork oil and accompanying seals. Every moving joint in the rear suspension (nobody lubes them if they need to, or replaces them if they're meant to be). The whole fucking rear shock. The seat. Every fastener will slowly rattle loose. Electrical connections can and do degrade. Charging system bits die.

Reading the sticky, you talk about starting on smaller bikes because bigger bikes are hard to control for beginners. But you make it seem like that's more of an issue with people who want sport bikes.

It has newer Nissin front calipers from a CBR, actually, with SS lines front and rear.

Bike in question is a 1st Gen SV650 at a good price with anywhere from 40-60k miles, and a 8k mile engine. All the work was supposedly done last spring. Bike is at a ridiculously good price.

Has Racetech Emulators/Fork Springs and a Penske double adjustable shock, Dunlop Q3s, Vortex rear sets and sliders, Rejetted Carb + Slip On, and Renthal Bar + Chain.
>>
>>16281040
That image is full of complete bullshit. It's just meant to keep idiots out of trouble. If you're starting out on a street bike it doesn't really matter. You will definitely be able to modulate your inputs and survive, but it doesn't matter if you're on a ninja 250 or a GSXR600. The procedure for crashing like an idiot is the same. The 250 is just recommended because it's harder to get it up to speeds where crashing becomes significantly easier for people who can't ride.

Here's the real beginner course:
1: Get a shitty dirtbike
2: Ride it on dirt all summer
2.5: Maybe ride in on the street, very carefully
3: Get any fucking bike you want
4: Now you have two bikes
5: Fuck yes

Here's the one for people who don't want to git gud:
1: Get literally any bike
2: Respect the machine
3: You'd rather hold up traffic than die
4: Leaning is for suicidal madmen who endanger themselves and others
5: Hey man, track days have been gettign expensive. I'll give you $20 for those squared off tires.

Here's what you shouldn't do:
1: Get any sportbike from 125 to 1000cc
2: Lean over a bit and feel like you know how to ride
3: Push it and hope the amazing sportbike handling saves your ass
4: Crash

>>
>>16281075
You either learn to lean and learn to love the lean or you don't ride on pavement. Period.

Cars are capable of faster cornering speeds and will ride your ass and run you over at what their drivers perceive as a comfortably brisk pace around corners because you're afraid of leaning over 30 degrees, or you'll try to make a turn at speed and crash because you don't have experience leaning and force the bike into a lowside with bad body position and shitty inputs.

You will never lean like a MotoGP rider because of the limits of your bike's chassis, suspension, and tires. You probably won't lean like a canyon carver because you need to reach unreasonable speeds to make those lean angles necessary without shitty backwards body position and choppy late apexes that you shouldn't be doing anyways. It's not retarded leaning shit, it's daily life unless you're that guy on a full bagger plugging up the 60mph two-lane highway by taking turns at 45mph (and crying when cars illegally pass).

Part of riding on public roads is functioning as a cog in a system. In order to participate without much trouble, you must match the "laid back" cornering speeds of most cars and start leaning. Gears that do not engage and rotate smoothly damage everything they interact with, leading to eventual catastrophic failure. This applies to roadgoing vehicles that do not closely match the speed of surrounding traffic.

NO LEANS NO LIFE

>Buy "adventure bike"

why do people do this
>>
>>16281295
Because they have more money than you.
>>
I just want people to be proud of things I make, I want the people close to me to be interested in what interests me, not in a "like what I like" way, but in a simple "hey good job"

I took some cool pictures today and everyone I go to to show my work no one cares, no one even says anything. And they all I take pride in my photography.

It's not even the attention I want, I just want to be told I did a good thing, someone to show interest in what makes me happy, I just don't understand why that's such a hard thing to come by. Someone shows me something or whatever, "Dude nice job, looks great" "Hope you really enjoy your new thing" etc etc. Some basic kindness goes so far. Fuck.

;~;

This is what I'm look for. Does anyone have any experience adding things like this? How much weight could it hold?
On the site it's says 20lb max, and that the rack can hold more, but I'm not sure how much the bike can handle without snapping something.

How much are you needing to carry? You generally don't want to load those little top racks up too much. Bikes with steel subframes can generally handle a fair amount, people overload them all the time. (pic related)

Look into pannier racks, they will get you more weight. Or just get a military duffel and strap that bitch on, letting the rack and seat take the weight.

I brought this up the other day. BMW riders do it the most, from what I've seen. I've seen them do it in campground loop circles, 5 mph smooth dirt road. Someone has to be teaching them this, or they've seen it somewhere as the required move on unpaved roads. Watch any video of real off road racers and they never stand straight up like a board, they crouch forward and have elbows bent. Or they sit down to conserve energy.

DAKAR

Pic not related, but people wonder why pirates are the laughing stock of motorcycle riders.
>>
>>16281368

One of those dinky racks would be fine to get started with. Combo that with a tank bag and backpack and you'd probably be good for minimal camping. Can add fender bag, tank panniers or real panniers as needed.

yo guys, I'm looking to buy myself a kind of starter toolkit for christmas for around 100€, any recommendations for manufacturers and actual tools that should be in there?
>>

Check what your bike needs, but generally
6-8-10mm Allen keys
10mm socket
Jis/philips
And that's it
On my bike specifically i'd also need a t50 for motor mounts

Buy only premium tools with lifetime warranty (Facom for exemple), dont risk breaking tools and messing up your whole engine/expensive bolts and whatnot.
If you cant afford them, just split costs with à bike buddy.

I've been riding with shit bikes (for this borad standards) for a couple of years now. I can tell you this:
Started with an used 2 stroke 125cc; eventually, it fell apart. I put 80.000 km in it.
Move to a 0km 4 stroke Yamaha 125 in 2008. Got it up to 150.000 km and sold it.
I bought a KLR 650 and sold it because it is a guaranteed 'death by lead' here.
Finally I bought a Honda 250, a Tornado.

They never felt like 'small' or 'boring' to me.
I ride in the city 9 hours a day, making bad decisions every second, and I loved every single km I put in those bikes.
Just buy the one you like, if you go in tje Interstate a lot, buy a 250 or greater. If not, every bike is suited for you.

I hope this is not a pasta, this is really well written. You're actually right. I've never rode in America, but from what I see, since lane spliting is illegal on most states, and since you guys have a huge cellphone on wheels problem, you just need to be able to outmaneuver anyone on the road. If you can't lean you won't be able to safely ride on the streets.

No lean no life.

All the air that was in your brake lines has now been dissolved into the brake fluid. Probably a good idea to bleed that fluid, the air will come out of it eventually. Especially if it's warm where you are or you're using the bike on track / canyons.

>>
>>16282096
Definitely focus on observations, road positioning, and following distance. Two second rule etc.

Also make sure you wrap up warm, being cold wrecks your concentration. Try not to focus on the guy following you, ride for yourself. (You'll probably hear that phrase at some point tomorrow)

I've done two Mod 1's and three Mod 2's, failed the A2 Mod 2 first time because I crossed a zebra crossing while someone was waiting. Two years later I flew through both the tests no problem.

>>16282122
idk, sometimes you'll be caught out for really silly things.
>>
>>16282147
I mean, I get what you're saying, over the past 2 years, I might have picked up some questionable techniques (in the eyes of the law/instructor) when I'll do my A test next year, but if you constantly question your skill, you'll be even more nervous and might eat shit more easily. Just keep in mind all the rules of the road, and keep one eye on the speedo.
>>
>>16282111
2 spare helmets? Did you plan on crashing so often that you needed that many on hand?
>>

The wannabe tough guys on their ridiculously loud motorcycles are once again besieging the normally peaceful roads of NH.

Every year in April, the mouth breathing cunts take to the streets on their louder than fuck ass-jewelry for the sole purpose of being noticed.

We get it, you want to be seen and to have your existence recognized. Why else would you parade around in your gaudy leather and helmet-less head, with two unmuffled exhaust pipes spilling untold decibles into the peaceful Sunday air?

Please, please blip your throttle again while sitting at the traffic light. Yes, blip it once more! Again! You are a sexy beast sitting on all that chrome, your fat gut hanging over your belt and touching the gas tank and your blubbery jowls barely hidden behind your ridiculous face hair. If I were a woman, then surely my panties would be flooded, oh yes, blip that throttle again! I bet sex with you would be like riding a magnificent and powerful bean bag.

Perhaps someday this ridiculous trend of noise will cease.
