Looking getting an exhaust for my Ducati monster 796 for next season and I really like the Vance and Hines cs one dual undertail but they claim it only fits 2008-2011 696 and 1100. I'm pretty sure little to nothing changed from 2011 to 2012 which is the year of my bike and the 696 and 796 are almost identical. Think I'll run into any issues?

I'm going to be getting my license in the first quarter of next year. I want to start thinking about gear so I can buy it in advance and not all at once as soon as I start riding. Just looking for some advice from you fellas.

1. As a novice, is getting leathers overkill? I live in London (UK) and cycle year round, so would be fine riding a motorbike through winter too.

2. I have decided to get a DRZ400SM as my first bike. I don't care about the memes.. But would I look like a fool wearing leathers and a road helmet (pic related) on a sumo ?

3. What else could you recommend for year round gear, or am I better off getting both winter and non winter gear?

4. Reason I'm keen on leathers is they seem to offer the best protection, but again.. As a novice on a DRZ, is it too much? I prefer to invest money into quality things that last longer, rather than cheaping out and replacing it sooner rather than later.

By the way in don't think I'll be commuting, since I get a company car and as a Sales person, always have to look presentable and wearing a suit. So really this would be for weekend rides on and off road.
>>
Should I get the Suzuki TU250 for my next bike?

It looks beautiful and it is perfect for fuel economy (around 70mpg) and commuting,

>>
>>16282401
>1. As a novice, is getting leathers overkill?
No, leather offers the best protection

>2. would I look like a fool wearing leathers and a road helmet (pic related) on a sumo ?
Yes

>3. What else could you recommend for year round gear, or am I better off getting both winter and non winter gear?
Get some fat ass touring gear with liner to be warm. Also there is heated grips, heated gear, heated seats if you absolutely need to.

>4.
Safety is never too much. And you can keep using most leathers after crashes, it's easily the safest.

>>16282429
Sure why not if you need a beater. Just be warned, it's not any faster than a modern 125 so you may as well look into other 250s.
>>
>>16282401
Leave your leathers at home unless you're going to the track. Get some textile waterproof pants, jacket and some solid boots
>>

You look like a fool skidding over the asphalt in your fox jersey that's for sure.

Riding on road for 4.5 years, bike has gone down 4 times.

First 2 times was me locking the front on my ybr125 in the wet. First time was me panicking when an oncoming car decided to pass a parked car using my lane. Second time I was just coming to a gentle stop behind a car when the bike just slid from under me. Still have no idea why that happened.

Followed by sliding my TZR 125 coming off the roundabout in a group ride when it just started to rain a little bit. I was WOT trying to keep up with big bikes on a group ride. Bike was restricted at this point so I thought the tyre could handle it. This was in the same year as my previous "crashes".

Then, fast forward about 3 years and 2 bikes, I slid my ZX6r down the road going around a roundabout on a dry day after my rear tyre broke loose. Checked my tyre pressures, the rear tyre was at 18 psi...

>TL;DR check your damn tyre pressures

So wearing leathers on a sumo is stupid, but so is wearing MX gear, so just basic sober looking textiles, even if it isn't as good protection as leathers?

Is the road helmet fine, since I'd eventually want to get a street / sport bike. I would like to ride some distance.. Like 100kms away or whatever, I feel like a dirt helmet would be no good for that.

>>16282539
Haha, was waiting for this.. What would you get instead? The reason for the DRZ in my case is that it's slow, forgiving, cheap and reliable. Seems ideal for a newbie.

Lost count on pocketbikes and dirt bikes, once on the street because I went riding at night without a working headlight.

Unless you count dropping it, then twice because I had to lay er down one morning after I slipped on a rock. Steep gravel driveways suck.
>>
>>16282550
I'm just memeing you.

Wear leathers, no one gives a fuck how you look, be safe. You're on a motorcycle, you don't need cagers to think you look cool you're already cool as fuck. Just don't expect other people to think so.

They also make special dual-sport helmets that have visors and look a little more dirt-friendly so they fit the fashion better.

DRZ is a fine motorcycle, just don't be DRZfag and spam all the goddamn time.

2 years

2 crashes, both in my first two months of riding.

One was dropping the clutch in the parking lot thinking I had downshifted and instead just given 2nd gear a fat blip on the throttle for rev matching, hit a curb and ended up sideways in a mulch planter, nothing really hurt but my pride and KLR anyways so zip ties may as well be OEM fix.

2nd was coming into a steep hard uphill right turn too hard, clipped a curb and lowsided at about 8 mph.

I would have suggested textiles if you intended on commuting with it but if you're just using it for weekends there's a good chance you won't go out if it's pissing down or freezing, so leathers will be perfect for you.

There's nothing silly about wearing leathers on a sumo if you're actually going to ride it properly and get your lean on.

MX helmets are designed for offroading. Ventilation, deflecting rocks and protection from roost. You're probably not going to need any of that. A regular full face will give you better protection, wind noise reduction and comfort.

>I heard the new SV650 is just a slightly remodeled Gladius, which were pretty terrible. Is that true?

Never rode a gladius, but I did ride a 2005 SV for almost 20k miles and now the new one and it just really feels like a throwback to those days.
Just better.

chose it over the MT07 mostly because of the round headlight styling and the far superior suspension.
New SV is a load of fun outside cities aswell, the MT feels kinda meh in comparison.

1. No. Also don't buy cheap textile ever. It will melt to your skin if you are unlucky enough to slide 3 feet. I did not have fun taking off those pants.
2. Most people say you look like a fool in anything but a hoodie and jeans unless you're on a straight up repli-racer.
3. Layer up. Scarf, bacalava, thin gloves to go under your gloves
4. No you idiot.
5. Offroad demands different gear. Speeds are lower, so the wind won't cool you down as much. The surface is uneven, so you tumble instead of sliding. Look at MX racers and tell me how many leather jackets you see. Depending on what you're doing most of the time you might want to get some strap-on armor and airy textiles to go over it as a compromise, or just do the armor and hang/pack your leather jacket at the trails. Road rash on dirt isn't that fucking bad anyways. Pavement rash is emergency room tier, dirt and gravel rash is bandaid tier.

Is there any problem with buying somewhat old bikes if they look and seem mechanically sound (and have a professional check-up)?

I'm getting bashed over the head by family and friends to not buy a $1500 bike (yet parents refuse to help out) from 1996 purely because
>ITS A 20 YEAR OLD BIKE ANON IF IT GOES WRONG ITS YOUR LIFE

Bike in question is a Suzuki GSX250F that's only been dropped one (learner tip-over) with every damaged item replaced, no frame damage, excellent engine, and all known issues (throttle sliders, speedo cable) preemptively fixed.

Is there anything inherently wrong with a 20 year old generally bulletproof Japanese bike, or are my family and friends annoyances justified?

So what? You can still have uncommitted fun from time to time.. I don't get this mentality. Also, when a girl has a bf, don't ever let that stop you. Maybe he's a dick behind closed doors and she hasn't plucked up the courage to leave him, maybe he's cheating on her and she'll find out in a few months, maybe she's just kind of realising he isn't all that great anymore and she's kinda over it but too comfy to end it right away.. You don't need to be an aggressive prick about it, but don't let yourself believe you have to give a flying fuck about some guy you don't know. It they're married, fine, stay away. Any motorcycle not a Harley is not a "hog". Fun beater tho.

If you are so desperately poor that it matters, then stick with a 250 and ride what you can afford. It's better than walking.

I pity non-Americucks with expensive fuel.

Parts are plentiful and you can bore and stroke those to over 100 cubic inches.
>>
>>16283929
Where I live fuel is expensive but we also get paid more than your average american. So it all sort of works out much the same.

I bet you would because there'd always be something you could have done.

I think it is possible to avoid almost every car pullout through forethought, road position, setting up brakes and whatnot, treating it like even if they pull out then you have an escape plan. If I can't see through an intersection I slow to a snails pace.

A deer is a wild animal and a different story.

No way. I'd hate to commute on a wr450.

Riding 1.5 years, started riding on a 600

Crashed one time I guess but never dropped my bike. I was on a road in the city debating whether or not I should take a left to get back to the highway, i looked, then hesitated a bit and didn't look again, turned right into a taxi, broke my headlight, cracked front fairings, popped the taxis front tire, and spun me completely around. Somehow didn't drop the bike.

I've locked up the front two times though and was saved by abs, once on the highway for a panic brake situation and once a week ago on a cold day with cold tires.

>TLDR I'm a shit rider but have never dropped my bike
>>
>>16283955
If you can afford fuel, there's no replacement for displacement.

4 years of riding and 1 crash at 15 going on gravel fire road.

Was going to buy a plot of land but couldn't get a loan as buyer wants all cash, so was thinking about getting a second bike

4 years riding now
A LOT of crashes on dirt
4 major crashes on the road:
>truck turned in front of me and I locked the front wheel
>Car came out of a blind driveway and clipped me
>rear ended someone while lane splitting
>Ran wide on a curve and went into a ditch
Also plenty of lowsides and dropping the bike. I'm a shit rider.

AR does not equal assault rifle. I highly doubt he has an assault rifle. Select fire with an intermediate cartridge is what classifies as rifle as an assault rifle.

Most likely it's a semi-auto.

No way I would do such a cheap and hazardous mod. The reflector on those halogen lamp are not angled properly for a LED swap.

Bonus pic of my new rear signal / break light. Now I wonder how visible I am at night with just this as my running light. I'm now considering adding those license plate reflector screw.

But that's not what the phrase actually means. What it means is ALL OTHER THINGS BEING EQUAL more displacement will produce more power. Anything you can do to a babby engine to make more ponies you can do to a larger engine resulting in greater hp.

Same thing can be said for cams.
>NO REPLACEMENT FOR GOOD CAMSHAFTS!
All else being equal the engine with the "hotter" cam will make more power.

All else being equal an engine with forced induction will make more power.
>NO REPLACEMENT FOR TURBOS
>>
>>16284547
But this is wrong because even then two completely different displacements will make different horsepower.

Higher displacement = higher power ceiling

It's as simple as that.
