You don't exactly have a choice, rolling/tumbling can be better than sliding depending on what surface you are on.

I'd rather tumble on a chip sealed road, some of those surfaces are rough. It is basically sandpaper with 1/2in stones for grit.

Hi. I did a "controlled riding group" track day in Ontario. This is what you have after lessons for track time with instructors available, but not formal lessons.

I took my GS500F on the track to lean to corner with my bike, rather than having to transfer the skills to it after using a rental bike. Quite a lot of the guys in my level (1) found that they were held up in the corners by slower riders who would then crank open the throttle down the straight, and the faster cornering riders couldn't pass them. They got quite frustrated over time.

Riders passed me so much faster on the straights, though, that they were either gone by the first corner or at least by the next one, and I rode unimpeded pretty much all the time! A decent speed differential is a good thing. No one complained about me either, as they could all get ahead of me at the next straight and there were 4 of them on the circuit plus a few other passing places (passing in corners was forbidden at that level).

I have finally scrubbed off the chicken strips! Had a great time.
>>
>>16241540
Congratulations on getting to the track. The GS500 really is an excellent track bike. IMO, one of the best for someone who's new to the experience.
>>
>>16241554
I was safely passing some ducati's, sv650's, and a handful of bmw's then having them run around me on the straight

The DR-Z400 is objectively the best expert level dual sport bike.
> mileage
It's a mid-sized 4stroke single cylinder bike, so it gets at least 50mpg.
> handling
It handles nothing like a supersport. It it tall and light with a steering geometry set up to be very agile. This combined with the wide handlebars make it very easy to change directions.
> brakes
The brakes are designed for off-road and aren't so twitchy they will lock up easily on slick surfaces. They are completely acceptable but require a firm squeeze, yet with a larger diameter rotor upgrade like on the SM model you will find it taking no effort at all to slow down very quickly.
> power
When you're a good rider you don't need 100+ HP to pass everyone on the touge. Git gud faget.
> carbs
The CV carb found on the DR-Z helps calm down the twitchiness of a lightweight single.
> seating position
The tall seat combined with a completely upright seating position puts you high enough to see over all but the highest brotrucks. It is also a very comfortable position which puts practically no strain on your lower back or wrists.
> price and availability
The bike has gone unchanged for the last 15 years so there's plenty available for very cheap. The popularity and lack of change keeps the resale value high so it's easy to sell. This has the downside of making them expensive to buy in the used market but can be avoided with patience.
> suspension
The Dr-Z400 features a fully adjustable Showa cartridge forks and shock which offer splendid damping characteristics. You can tune it to your riding style with the clickers and preload adjusters, but you will benefit from a respring if you're a fat fuck. Lose some weight.

I should go back and try to conquer those stairs, or some stairs somewhere. I'm convinced those long steps would be harder to ride up than normal ones.
>>
>>16242145
I think the right technique would be to go at them straight from the beginning, bounce the front just before contact with the first stair and keep your weight on the back tire while you're standing on the pegs. I can barely into kerb hopping, so YMMV.

Last session it started raining lightly but we decided to go out anyway, I dumped it on the outlap going at a hilariously low speed, my brain was telling me not to bother the whole time I was going out but peer pressure is a bitch and my brother was going out so I figured I should too.

I was running out of clearance before when it was dry so i was after new rearsets anyway, now I've gotta sort out the kickstand clearance though...

honda is literally the cuck of bike manufacturers lately. their dirtbikes are weak as fuck and their street bikes have only just now had some life breathed into them, via the new fireblades. but those still took ages to update, and they're discontinuing their 600. most of their development is in beginner bikes, which are underpowered and heavy. barely anything they make is cool anymore. the fireblade is the last and only thing that is interesting but chances are with their track record, it'll come last to the gsxr and r1.
>>
>>16242912

>>16242912
600s are dead across the board dude

Why have some peaky "sport" bike when you can ride a liter and have something that's not only faster, but more driveable around town?

No probs, might be a rip but if that's genuine it's a real bargain. If I get 2k together soon a friend of mine will come check out a bandit 250 near his place, that'd be a bit of fun once I get the hang of twin carbs.

I dunno. Starting a small bike is good because you can only rely so much on power at that level and you will need to improve yourself to get faster. These skills will follow you up with faster bikes.

>>16242949
>not settling on a maximum speed for touge runs to balance out power differences between your m8s
and if you ride a powerful bike fast you will need to learn good braking habits where a small bike won't get to those same speeds to require the same braking
>>
>>16242949
Maybe if you're riding by the bike's limits trying to keep up with a group of hoons, but for street and solo riding self imposed rules like "keep it under 10k rpm because it saves gas" can have the same effect.

On the other hand, someone on a slow bike can just never, ever commit to riding quicker and buy a faster bike once their nanny state/wallet allows it, under the false impression that they are already good.

Instruction via limits is a ridiculous concept when it's not do or die. It's not what you ride, it's how you ride it. This is the part where redditors jump in and remind us that most people aren't mature enough to keep it cool and that every kid on a hayabusa will find that one corner that just begs for them to try to be rossi and end up highsiding off a cliff.

>>16242967
The commonly held point point of forcing people to start on shitbikes, as in the real reason instead of the bullshit people feed you on forums, /dbt/, and reddit, is actually to limit speed and reduce the severity of accidents, since they're more likely to occur to new riders.

That's all it fucking is.

yes
no, it wasnt a lot at all
kinda fast cause there was no lip
>>
>>16243006
Yes, like MAYBE a foot
Barely, was my first time on a dual sport
pretty fast cause it was a tiny ramp
>>
>>16243011
Ah soz, I meant on the street. I've come up on hills that I'd just be able to get off the ground but cant. Closest was just a bit off the rear and ended up doing an accidental whilly since I forgot to come off the throttle.
>>
>>16243006
yes.

Some no, some yes.

Depends on the launch obviously, the fastest one I did was only about 120 km/hr though over a crest that was parabola shaped, huge amounts of zero gravity.

I'm after a dirtbike now because I miss jumps.
>>
>>16243002
Look at burger vloggers crashes on yt, it's always some stupid mistake that a road experience given by a bicycle would have prevented.

Man you might as well point towards chimpanzees as an arugment for safety scissors
>>
>>16243006
You need to commit. Go in aiming to jump and you will. Make sure you are right on power for the last bit before the crest, give the throttle a strong twist and hold on, don't brake until you hit the ground and be steady on power
>>
>>16242791
2 months no riding
>>
>>16243021
The idea is that fucking up on smaller bike is harder than on a bigger bike.
I say starting to learn on one, not actually getting competitively good on a 250.
Of course no matter what you're riding if you lock up the front brakes into a corner etc you're going to go down but on a 250 it's probably going to be a hell of a lot slower than a liter bike.
>>
>>16243025
They represent your average rider.
>>
What do you plan to do with your bike when you are finished with it?

Personally I'm going to rebuild it and pass it along to my younger brother. Keep it in the family.

Plus if he trashes it I know where he lives and can beat the shit out of him.

if you don't obey speed limits or have a really bad case of wrist spasms
>>
I don't think you guys quite understand how good most of dbt is
Save for those who just started this thread is mostly veterans and spend demons seeking to better themselfs, on the street most riders are scooter-bound bumblefucks that have no interest in learning proper techniques
>>
>>16243037
i guess youre right. for all the shittalk, its not so bad. i hate myself when i accidentally ride to a scooter.

whoever enters the roundabout first has right of way.

But this video is a good example of why I will not cut off any car in an intersection expecting them to stop, I will wait until I am absolutely certain the car is at a standstill before I complete it, It might be slow as hell and probably aggravating to the car but I don't get hit.
