>If a drz400 does not need maintenance then why did anons drz400 lose enough oil to destroy a main bearing?
Because it was so slow it committed suicide.
>>
>>16234366
All motorcycles need the same regular maintenance

Maintain and change engine oil
Maintain and change coolant
Flush brake fluid
Replace pads
Replace rotors
Adjust, lube, and eventually replace cables
Change fork oil
Lube suspension components
Replace bearings, or maybe just clean and repack them
Change tires
Clean, lube, adjust, and eventually replace chain/sprockets
Check and adjust valves

And then you have special snowflakes in the dirt/supermoto/racebike category that need the occasional top end rebuild, something that really should not be expected of a four stroke.

>we saved 10lbs making the engine less reliable!

The DRZ400 is not one of those snowflakes.

So that shit parents can feel a little bit better about being a failure as a caregiver for their spoiled brats.

>On the other hand, I work as a psychiatrist and some of my patients are autistic. Many of these patients are nonverbal. Many of them are violent. Many of them scream all the time. Some of them seem to live their entire lives as one big effort to kill or maim themselves which is constantly being thwarted by their caretakers and doctors. I particularly remember one patient who was so desperate to scratch her own face – not in a ‘scratch an itch’ way, but in a ‘I hate myself and want to die’ way – that she had to be kept constantly restrained, and each attempt to take her out of restraints for something as basic as going to the bathroom ended with her attacking the nurse involved. This was one of the worse patients, but by no means unique. A year or so ago, after a particularly bad week when two different nurses had to go to the emergency room, the charge nurse told me in no uncertain terms that the nursing staff was burned out and I was banned from accepting any more autistic patients. This is a nurse who treats homicidal psychopaths and severely psychotic people every day with a smile on her face. When she says “autistic”, it seems worlds apart from the “autistic” that means “good at math and makes cute hand flap motions”. When a mental health professional says “autistic”, the image that comes to mind is someone restrained in a hospital bed, screaming.

Used complete engines are about 1500 shipped off Ebay.

Better buy two or three, then fill with oil so they are ready to use. Motion Pro sells fuel line quick disconnects and you could use tricks like captive nuts for the engine bolts so you can reduce future swapout times. Exhausts can be quick-swapped when held by coil springs.

Ride until knock or seizure, replace engine with full good motor, repeat.

>>
>>16235009
The DR-Z400 is objectively the best expert level dual sport bike.
> mileage
It's a mid-sized 4stroke single cylinder bike, so it gets at least 50mpg.
> handling
It handles nothing like a supersport. It it tall and light with a steering geometry set up to be very agile. This combined with the wide handlebars make it very easy to change directions.
> brakes
The brakes are designed for off-road and aren't so twitchy they will lock up easily on slick surfaces. They are completely acceptable but require a firm squeeze, yet with a larger diameter rotor upgrade like on the SM model you will find it taking no effort at all to slow down very quickly.
> power
When you're a good rider you don't need 100+ HP to pass everyone on the touge. Git gud faget.
> carbs
The CV carb found on the DR-Z helps calm down the twitchiness of a lightweight single.
> seating position
The tall seat combined with a completely upright seating position puts you high enough to see over all but the highest brotrucks. It is also a very comfortable position which puts practically no strain on your lower back or wrists.
> price and availability
The bike has gone unchanged for the last 15 years so there's plenty available for very cheap. The popularity and lack of change keeps the resale value high so it's easy to sell. This has the downside of making them expensive to buy in the used market but can be avoided with patience.
> suspension
The Dr-Z400 features a fully adjustable Showa cartridge forks and shock which offer splendid damping characteristics. You can tune it to your riding style with the clickers and preload adjusters, but you will benefit from a respring if you're a fat fuck. Lose some weight.

GSR650F, MT-07 (Fz-06), R3, Ninja 300 or Ninja 250. Which bike will teach me to corner better? I fully understand these are completely different bikes, but in my country they are price somewhat close. The SV650 is not here yet, we're still stuck with the gladius. Cornering is the most fun aspect in a bike, and my bike (xtz 125 E with dual sport tires) don't give me much confidence scraping the foot peg.

imo I don't like the MT-07s handling but I've seen people ride them quick kneedown too (genuinely the front is horrifyingly soft) so that's the only one I wouldn't recommend in terms of wanting to learn to corner.

Raise up the forks in the triple clamps and it will turn in a lot faster. Anyway when you get up to speed you can really feel that it's not meant to ride straight all day. It really wants to turn.

Sure you can. Why not? I do it.

The bike itself, eh. If it's a cruiser you might be scraping things and "hanging off" (as well as a cruiser allows) on day one.

The beginner displacement meme is just to save idiots from whisky throttle, discovering the powerband for the very first time mid-corner, and momentarily becoming 12 years old and trying to go faster just because the bike can, ignoring the rider, tires, and road.

I just don't think a beginner will be able to ride a 250 4T near engine limit on dirt anyway is all.

Like a good 250 that is.

I don't think the difference between 450 and 250 dirtbikes is comparable to road bike displacement differences where the 250s are generally beginners bikes and made to lower spec etc.

I was saying that no matter what bike, it is capable of doing things you would never dream of doing on it so why does it really matter?

They all out class the common man, especially if it is someone that did not grow up riding dirt bikes.

tons of power for a 250 (42bhp iirc) and one of the best handling bikes i have ever had the pleasure of riding.
Something about the rear end is just un natural but in a good way, the grip is just there when it shouldn't be.
Yamaha did an A+ job designing that bike.

Bummer!

Needs stator, regulator, bare crimp splices, heatshrink and lots of wire. I note any color changes in my manual. Ebay is cheapest way to get good wiring supplies. Local industrial suppliers like Fastenal are quickest if you need shit instantly or overnight but cost more.

I buy kits like these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/200Pcs-Copper-Butt-Splice-Connector-22-10AWG-Bare-Tinned-Crimp-Terminal-W-Case-/112173914111?hash=item1a1e1617ff:g:maAAAOSw44BYCIzT

Get some decent crimpers. Chop Cult has some good wiring threads.

For cheap, VERY effective, but ugly rain gear it's hard to beat old US military two piece rubberized green rain suits. You can find them on Ebay. They look like a giant green turd but they keep most of the water off and are windproof.

>>16235867
Why did you use it? It probably won't really do much. If you're worried just dump the oil and feel better about it. Maybe it'll cause clutch slip or the bike will sound fucked on a cold start but unless you used a LOT of it it's probably not a big deal.
>>
>>16235867
Depends on the bike. If engine and clutch share oil it may lube your clutches friction plates too much causing slippage.

IMO as a mechanic Lucas is a too heavy for anything but an older Harley or similar hot running aircooled engine. Just follow your service manual recommendations, only going with heavier oil at very high miles.

>(maybe 4-6 oz).

Fuck it, I'd leave it in if your engine is a typical four cylinder since a few ounces isn't much. "Very high miles" would be over 50-60K.

If you'd gone nuts and put a quart of Lucas in, that would be different and much thicker overall.

If your engine doesn't sound "loose" or smoke (a puff now and then is fine) just run recommended oil unless you live somewhere very hot.

Don't overthink oil. Having enough of it is the main concern since engines are quite tolerant otherwise.
>>
>>16235982
It probably won't do anything. It's just snake oil anyway. Top up your oil to the max level with proper oil to help dilute it. Clutch slip would likely be at peak power or a bit harder to take off from a stop but still rideable. Try riding it before you must go to work just in case... If you're going to lose sleep just dump the oil and use the bike oil it asks for.

If you really want to give your engine a treat then give it fresh oil specified for your bike.
>>
>>16236022
Lucas won't fuck with seals or gaskets as it's basically a thickener.

It has a V4 engine. So you think I'd be fine? I could just top it up with more oil in the near future?

>If your engine doesn't sound "loose" or smoke (a puff now and then is fine)
I put seafoam in my gas tank too, so I'll likely see the smoke as well. I feel so stupid. I'm scared for my baiku.

-------------

>If you're going to lose sleep just dump the oil and use the bike oil it asks for.
What if I just top it up a bit? I need to get more oil anyway (I made a typo in my other post saying I added oil, I meant to say stabilizer).
>>
>>16236054
Might have been the cb400. I've run Lucas or STP mixed with lighter weight oil in my Shovelheads when I couldn't get 70 weight. No seal issues. I also used Lucas at a used car lot. (Their automatic transmission additive works surprisingly well.)
>>
>>16236058
IDK but I do know that if you put a Suzuki DRZ400SM engine in a Suzuki DRZ400SM frame it becomes a godbike.
>>
>>16236063
Seafoam is harmless. BTW if you suspect water in your fuel you can always drain the tank and replace with fresh petrol.
>>
>>16236082
My dad used it on his old jeep and older american cars way back.
>>
>>16236082
Jap bikes have smaller lubricaction passages that can get clogged up, cause leaks or suffer from lubrication problems and what not.
>>
>>16236063
Sure top it up it'll just dilute it and make the lucas do even less. The lucas stuff is only a problem for some people because they add so much they have 3/4 lucas and 1/4 oil left in their shitbox that's already dying.
As far as picking oil... just get which oil weight the manufacturer recommends, make sure it is specific for motorcycles, and apparently older bikes are best with a semi-synthetic or non-synthetic oil, something to do with the clutch material and oil passage design I guess. I think aside from the unbranded/too cheap oil the branding doesn't matter as much as replacing the oil regularly.

>seafoam
aren't you supposed to add that to the fuel slowly as you let the engine run? IDK I don't use it, just follow the instructions closely I guess, I've heard of people using it with success but I think tearing down and cleaning and replacing parts in the fuel lines/carbs/etc every few years and regular air & fuel filter changes is more worthwhile.

>Jap bikes have smaller lubricaction passages that can get clogged up, cause leaks or suffer from lubrication problems and what not.

That's babble, and I've been working on Jap bikes I got since my first Honda in 1978. Their passages or anything else aren't special, though the've been consistently well-designed and had quality casting and machining from the start. Keep oil of reasonably close to factory spec in them and they all last a long time.

>>16236146
>I think tearing down and cleaning and replacing parts in the fuel lines/carbs/etc every few years and regular air & fuel filter changes is more worthwhile.

The vast majority of required carb cleaning is due to owners neglecting their bike and letting it sit until the fuel deteriorates which doesn't take long with ethanol fuels.

Want a motorcycle to last a long time? RIDE IT and keep up with periodic maintenance, but mostly ride it.

Buy and read the factory service manual if possible, or a Haynes/Clymer/Chilton if not.

How might I find this information for older bikes? In the manual?

>aren't you supposed to add that to the fuel slowly as you let the engine run?
You can just pour some in and go as far as I'm aware, but seeing as I just put 4-6 oz of Lucas heavy-duty oil stabilizer in my engine, I'm not the best person to reference on these matters.
