Looking for a <650cc bike as a second bike.
>no supermotos
>no dirtbikes
>no SV650/ER6
>no 125cc except Grom
V2 would be nice, preferably not as cruiser

>Grom 125
+fun lil pitbike for innacity fun and shenanigans
- worried I'll ride it on the limit too often, dunno how good that is for a small engine

>Ninja/CBR 250
>ZXR400
+more versatile than a 125
- main bike is already sportbike

>Virago XV 535
+ something completly different
+ V2 sound
- pigfat
- handling

>SV650
+ V2 sound
- too common and boring

What's your current bike?
Hornet 600 is a classic.
>>
>>16175550
GSXR 750
Not looking for replacement, just want a fun sidebike for commuting, city riding, visiting friends.

Good suggestion but 600cc i4s would feel too similar. Preferably V2 naked or <400cc i4 or just anything obscure really. can also be 80s-90s
>>
>>16175545
GS500
>>
>>16175590
If there are some v2 bikes in your area you could go and test ride them pretending you'll buy them. That, or go to dealers.
Any reason why you want sub-650cc? Super Duke 1290 is supposed to be crazy. Try a 690, maybe.
>>
Thinking about getting a aussie postie bike for commuting into Uni and Work, is this a bad idea or should I just get a 250cc.

>>16175595
the 690duke would be cash, too pricey for a sidebike tho.

>Any reason why you want sub-650cc
yeah I'm just looking for something cheaper/comfier to put my commuter/city riding miles on and preserve the GSXR for my actual trips and going fast n shit
>>
>>16175610
>commuter

GS500
>>
>>16175610
> commuter
SV650N. Exotic usually isn't a great idea for a commuter. Boring is good.
I'd have said GS 500 or CB 500 but with FI it seems your fuel consumption is even lower.
>>
>>16175613
pls not again

>>16175614
thanks man I'm knowing all the common bikes. I'm looking for something more obscure. Bandit/SV/Hornet/parallel twins or anything you see more often are eh

Maybe something like a monster 600 but I heard it's a moneypit if shit happens.
>>
Alright, my friend is restricted to A2 and wants to buy a bike to cruise-travel around. He wants to buy a cruiser but I told him to buy a dual sport touring bike instead.

What are his options? Talking 250-300/400cc. Something cheap but good and reliable.
>>
>>16175618
m8 I thought you're looking for a commuter, and one that's not too expensive at that. If you want something exotic, you're going to have to shell out one way or another, and potentially risk your bike not working a lot of the time (see: Ducucki).

Seems like the VTR would be perfect for you

I was on a five-lane city street (middle was turning), and I was in the left hand lane. I was about at the rear bumper of the F150 (who was in the right-hand lane), when the car in front of them decided to take a right. The F150 didn't want to slow down, so they slammed on the breaks and jerked the wheel to the left. I was nearing the side driver door when this happened, and couldn't react in time (we were doing around 40). I hit the side door and/or the left fender. My bike spun-out and I went tumbling.

I had a complete break of the tibia and fibula (clean, lateral break), as well as my collarbone. I've gone through surgery, where they stuck a titanium rod down my shin-bone and some lateral screws to hold it in place.

Thank god I was completely geared-up, but they had to cut off my motorcycle boots and titanium/denim jeans (which was completely armored, as well). Looking at the state of my helmet, gloves (titanium knuckles), shoes, pants, and jacket (leather with reinforced armor) things could have been a lot worse. Probably skin graphs.

Besides all that, I got home a little over 15 hours ago, now it's all about recovery.

I've got a question, though. How should I proceed? Get a lawyer? Go straight to my insurance company? I don't know. I've never been in this type of situation before.
>>
>>16175518
Hey guys Ive never posted in DBT so dont hate me for this question if its been answered already.
What do you guys think of pic related? Its the Yanaha XSR900. I have fallen for this bike and everyone has nothing but good to say about it. I will be saving my septims for one and test riding when next spring/ summer hits. Good or bad bros?

It's literally an MT-09 which is a bike with an extremely strong engine but one of the world's worst suspensions. Even riding the MT-07 can be scary but the 09 takes it to a whole nother level. Basically get an SV650. failing that, consider suicide
>>
>>16175625
yeah but mainly a fun side bike that I can use to commute, not purely a commuter or I'd go with a cheap gs500.

>>16175639
ayy thanks m8, the VTR is exactly what I'm looking for, didn't have that on my radar.

>Trying to turn staying upright
All your other points are on the mark except this one. He's travelling <10mph. What's he supposed to do? Lean it in balls deep and drag knee?

It's a classic noob mistake:
>Start with way too much throttle
>Poor clutch control
>Shoot off faster than expected
>Turn radius is already too wide
>Panic that you're running wide and will hit curb
>Target fixate
>Gas it and dump clutch instead of pulling clutch in and turning more

No, you just allow installing apps from unknown sources in your security settings and download the .apk from f-droid.org. Some of the apps on there require root, but Osmand~ doesn't.
>>
>>16176866
Also you can either download the .apk (installer) for the app itself, or for f-droid which is essentially like the Play Store, but with free software; then download Osmand~ through that. That way you get automatic updates if you want them.

So my junction box on my Kawasaki EX-500 1989 crapped out, the part number on my bike is 26021-1064 but when I went to a mechanic he told me to get 59416-1059. The problem is that I can't find the 59416 version and only 26021 versions are popping up and I'm not sure if it's compatible with my bike since that model already stopped working. Anyone experienced this issue? (Pic not related)

How do you downshift before a corner if you're braking?
How does it go, brake, downshift, brake again?
>>
>>16178302
You can do both at once. When hard braking and downshifting at the same time the rear will tend to slide out a little but that can be used to your advantage.

I've been thinking about getting a CB350, I'm not into the cafe scene but I really like vintage standard bikes and I really hate cruiser bikes, especially with sub-liter engines (underpowered heavy pieces of shit). I'm thinking this is probably the type of bike I'm looking for. Maybe I'll get an SV650, CB500F or a more modern standard bike to go with it, I'm not really into the sport/supersport scene either though I can see myself on a 600 class Gixxer or Ninja one day.

>>16178482

>>
>>16178485
just practice regular rev matching way before you need to stop so that you don't really need to use the brakes

after you're comfortable with the blip try to involve some brake pressure

There's a reason that many racers consider the throttle and the front brakes to be part of the same control
>>
>>16178485
If you aren't doing hard braking or in any sort of intense situation just clutch and shift. You don't really have to rev match when downshifting, as long as you let the clutch out slowly and don't just drop it, because the engine spinning up to speed will be used as engine braking.

would not buy.. I used to have an XT350, posted here a few times, those are leagues better than xt225's, but still the bike left so much to be desired. terrible suspension with no aftermarket, no power, the only thing the 225 has going for it is that they are cheap and get good mpg's, but would not ever do more than light city commuting with it
>>
>>16178606
But I do revmatch anon

Unless I'm sliding the back into a burm
>>
when i engine brake while downshifting i usually just drag the rear brake for a little extra braking but mainly to turn on the brake light

with practice the actual engine braking/revmatch downshift comes pretty quickly, just do it early so you don't overshoot a stop.
eventually it'll feel natural knowing when to engine brake to come to a perfect stop
>>
>>16177011

The GS500 is objectively the best beginner bike.
> mileage
It's a mid-sized 4stroke twin cylinder bike, so it drinks less than 6 liters per 100 km.
> handling
It handles nothing like a supersport, spoiling you for when you get something else. But it can also corner much better than something like a cruiser, and actually uses its entire rear tire unlike a Ninja 250.
> brakes
They are complete shit and their only redeeming feature is that they're disc brakes. This is good because the longer braking distance forces new riders to plan ahead and start braking early. No ABS means they learn to brake properly I'd they don't want to get shrekt.
> power
It sits right at the power limit for A2 bikes which is great for euros. It's torquey enough to be faster off the line than most cars you'll encounter in the city. But it also feels relatively gutless so a) it's forgiving of mistakes and b) you can ride it at the limit without putting yourself into too much danger. It reaches up to 180 km/h which is fast enough for highway riding.
> carbs
It being carbed means that if you run into problems, you can learn to fix them yourself instead of heading to the mechanic every time.
> seating position
Upright, slightly forward means it's a neutral riding position so you can figure out what you want afterwards. The seat is relatively uncomfortable making literally every other bike after it will feel like heaven on your ass.
> price and availability
Parts and the bikes themselves are cheap and plentiful. If you crash and fuck up one of your fairings it's 40 euros to replace it with original parts. Engine needs little maintenance. Beginner riders are typically not financially independent, so this is a big plus for them.
> suspension
It's a budget suspension factoring into the overall low cost of getting a GS 500. If you want better suspension it's easy to swap. Therefore it gives beginners an opportunity to learn working on suspension while keeping the cost manageable.

interesting, I've had a pre-gen ninja 250 for about a year now, sometimes i feel disappointed with how it handles on the freeway. Otherwise i like how it handles around town.

Looking at the GS500 i kind of like how small and fuel efficient it is with that slight bump in power. But if i'm already kind of bored with the 250, is it even worth it at this point?

Which is why i'm also looking at the SV650, seems like its an appropriate step up size wise. But GS500 are dirt cheap which is why i was curious.
>>
>>16178902
Yeah but the SV is actually good
>>
>>16178902
The SV has a lot more go than it
It also is not as cheap
Let's put it this way
An SV is a good bike for a good rider
A GS can be utterly thrashed without it even noticing
>>
>>16178940
no don't even bother. The GS500 is slightly more powerful but it's even worse in every other way. It's just a meme here. SV would be plenty manageable.

Thanks famiglia, thanks for indulging me on that thought. Guess its money saving time.

Thoughts on the scrambler sixty2?
Is it decent for a beginner?
I mean i have some experience but not too much, also i cant afford to buy a 125cc hondawhatever just to sell it after
>>
>>16179022
We already told You tho
It costs way too much to be a learner
>>
>>16176952
A. Hes lying
B. Be crashed it.
C. He generally abused it for those miles

Make a pick
>>
>>16179036
Ok :c
Sucks tho every 125cc on the market here is semi auto
>>
>>16179022
it's really expensive, I also don't see the point in them because you'll outgrow it and want the full sized scrambler eventually making it kind of useless.

I don't really see the point in them at that price point. They also have tiny fuel tanks so have fun filling up every 100miles.
>>
>>16179022
Don't bother asking
if it isn't a supersport they will just call you gay
>>
Which is better, red/white or white/blue?
>>
>>16179037
or after sitting for 7 years likely with little fuel the gas rotted inthe tank and ruined it , shit up the carb and the waterpump seal gave up from sitting too long.
some people are also just anal about fluid changes
>>
>>16179110
RED
>>
>>16176952
>rebuilt carb
if he only put 267 miles on in 7 years, I could see why the carb needed cleaning
>waterpump, fuel tank
Water pump could have failed, but it's more likely he crashed it and broke it since there's no other reason to replace a tank
>brake fluid
maybe he's just paranoid about maintenance?
>new chain
this is the real WTF. I've never seen a chain go out in 267 miles. It would also surprise me if the little 250 snapped it or if the crash broke it because it probably would've taken the rear sprocket with it
>>
>>16179110
I like white/blue just a little bit more, I wouldn't be unhappy with either.
>>
>>16179110
Because I'm buying one of these two bikes in a few weeks

Leaning white/blue but they both look good so it's a hard choice.
>>
>>16179120
>new chain
maybe the owner didn't lube the chain while it was sitting and it rusted?

>>
>>16179141
I guess that's possible....I'd look that bike over really carefully before buying though.
>>
>>16179134
they both look great, I personally like white but red has ABS right?

Jesus bro. I'm glad you aren't ded. Try to not come out of this with an opiate habit. If you are in America I'd get a lawyer.
In Canada I'd wait until the insurance company offers a number. Don't settle until you are recovered.
>>
>>16175647
Consult free with a contingency fee lawyer. You can easily find "biker law firms" which specialize in such cases among others. Don't settle early.

SEE A LAWYER. If you don't get paid, they don't get paid. Also get hard copies of all your medical records AND scan and save to the cloud to substantiate or support future disability claims such as SSI.

Don't make the mistake of not planning for an entire life of medical documentation. Every American should so this. You'll thank me late, maybe decades later (at which point I'll be dead) but fucking do it!

Hi, I'm always that guy buyin the RS250 as a first bike. The riding course I'm taking to get the riding license is making me practice with a BMW 650 CS. Lessons cost €30 per hour which is a lot, but the cheapest I could find. Is it too bad to practice on that motorcycle? Does it make much of a difference what bike I'm learning to ride, also considering the bike I'm about to own?
>>

This.

Hate to sound like a cynic but if you're american you must exorcise your god given right to sue the pant off of somebody. I'm glad you're okay.

Hope you won't be too afraid to keep riding after you're all better.
