Just got a new bike today after being nobike for a few months. An unfortunate incident forced me to retire my scooter, but I've finally got a ride to look forward to.

It's a 1986 Honda VF500F. I'm very excited! It was owned by a mechanic, and purs like a silk cat. I'll be cleaning her up a bit tomorrow, and if anyone is interested, I'll post pictures.

So I installed new braided steel lines for my front brakes and there was absolutely nothing I could do to get pressure in the lever. It wasn't leaking, I was bleeding properly, and I even bench bled overnight TWICE (pull in lever and tie it down).

Even then, not the slightest inkling of any pressure in the lever. What bothers me is that the brakes were working incredibly well but I had to cut the lines to take off the front wheel so the master cylinder should be intact if it was working fine before but now it is just seemingly all fucked.

I think there is a huge air bubble in the MC but I have no way of removing it. I've done every trick in the book. And I can't bleed from the MC because the only thing Suzuki has ever gotten wrong in their entire lives is the shitty master cylinders they make.

take it off, strap it to some wood and set it up so the MC is the highest point.
crack the banjo and pump it till some fluid starts leaking out.
once the fluid is moving seal the banjo and give a light pull, wait 10 seconds and release.
repeat that for a while and then exercise th calipers to help push more air back up to the MC
just keep doing it till its firmed up properly.
if the MC wont start pumping with the banjo loose stick a chunk of tube on the outlet and draw it into there with a vacuum or your mouth if you can avoid eating the brake fluid.
or pressurize the reservoir to force it into the MC with the banjo loose

Too loose risks it vibrating free, leading to a leak or possibly dropping the plug entirely and the bike bleeding out at speed.
Too tight risks stripping out the threads in the engine case necessitating re-tapping and possibly a new plug bolt.

Get it nice and tight but don't CRANK on the fucker or anything. If you're still worried go for a short ride and then re-check the tightness, like you would with lug nuts on car wheels.

You can find all sorts of Cubs and Cub parts easily in America, but of course you location is fucking secret. They were and are popular vintage trials bikes and general pit bikes for vintage meets. You can download manuals and parts books easily.

I strongly suggest going to a British rally or several. The classic Britbike community are a good bunch. Also do (no matter what brands you fancy) Barber Vintage in Leeds, AL is amazing. I go every year. Words cannot do it justice, from the worlds largest motorcycle museum to the vintage racing and swap meet. AMCA meets are outstanding too.

Get familiar with British bike forums. This place is just a shipost zone for those who somehow failed to find better resources despite this era being the best ever for any type of motorcycling.

Cubs are often done as semi-restorations so you can enjoy them but retain their character. That one is pretty clean. You can title them thru title services if yours isn't titled and you wish to plate it one day.

Fuck draining the fucking oil! That's not even done for measurement in combat aircraft which typically fucking use a fucking sight glass. Correct level is within a range therefore sight glasses are just fine.

Wait until you can buy a torque wrench because torque is among the most difficult things to learn without guided practice, and a torque wrench will guide you because you will associate feel with measured torque.

Aircraft mechanic and trainer of many aircraft and some bike/car mechanics here. People who wrench shit often forget how to train others correctly.

What did you do today /o/?

I went to my garage to fix my sidecar alignment, but I got preoccupied with my other bike. Finally got the buggered screw that was holding the clutch cover on, so I could finally replace the worn out clutch cable. Had to lay it down on it's side and go apeshit with the cutting wheel on my dremel. Started it up, took 30 seconds or so before the left cylinder fired up. Then both were running stupid hot, like headers were smoking within a minute, so I'm assuming they're too lean.

Thats what I get for disassembling a perfectly fine bike to unnecessarily clean the carbs. Figure I fucked something up real nice.
