don't be such a little bundle of anxiety and remember that most people don't care if you're not immediately a pro rider at your first time doing things, you're there to learn and people will understand that.

You'll find most people of somewhat niche interests like motocross the people are just generally happy to have somebody new who is there and willing to learn because they want to share the joy they feel with you.

police doctrinally aren't supposed to go on high-speed chases anyway. for high-speed chases it's much safer to just get a bird in the air with eyes on and set up checkpoints. sumos or full-on dirtbikes are for sure the best motorcycle tools for cops
>>
>>16142305
Except a perp in a corolla/V6 mustang can literally plow through them even after having all his tires popped

Motorcycles are for traffic stops.
>>
>>16142292
The real reason is because they're good for chasing people who are fleeing on foot down tight alleys or through parks and making shortcuts that would be difficult on other bikes and impossible for cars.

>>
>>16142321
a perp blowing through a checkpoint turns it into a life-or-death situation, and use of force becomes fully justified. if you make it through the hail of fire while you plough through, the next checkpoint is going to be manned by very angry coppers pointing AR-15's in your direction
>>
>>16142335
The bike/car is for closing the gap so the cop actually has a chance to catch someone on foot. The chase isn't always going to be from an even start..

A dirtbikes maneuverability is also good for quickly getting into an intercepting position faster.
>>
>>16142362
this is obviously only for perps worth the effort. if you're on a supersport and blast up to 186 when you get lit up on the freeway, they might coordinate with other units in the area but other than that they're only going to pursue it if it becomes easy. the risk to bystanders is just too great to justify high-speed pursuits in a general sense

My Ninja runs a 130/70/17 rear tire but there's better tires available in 140/70/17, should I be okay going up 10mm?

And on that note:

Pirelli Diablo Rosso II, Bridgestone Battlax S20 Evo, or Michelin Pilot Streets?

>first bike

listen man, you are not going to like your first bike. you are not going to like your second bike. you might like your third bike, which might be similar to your second bike.

balance a quick and high value sale later down the line with performance and price before your supposed preferences, because at this point a bike is a bike and you're going to say "woahoa, awesome" to everything you test ride and then want to upgrade a month later.

basically, you want a meme bike, because it'll retain its value despite crash damage since everyone looking for one expects crash damage anyways

you know what you should get? a ninja 250.

>but muh high revs on the highway
no big deal. drive a toyota corolla sometime and then realize that a 250 actually does have passing power.
>>
>>16142568
Well for the first bike I'm not really concerned about power, hence looking at the 250 I've been posting. The ninja 250 is quite a bit more expensive than the crf250, or even the R3 I was also looking at. I'm not too worried about resale, but at the same time, I don't want something that I'm only going to drop money onto then never get a dollar for it later.
I'm not sure if it's a good thing, but my preferences actually are price, fuel cost and comfort in that order

i'm having trouble adjusting the throttle freeplay on my gsxr 600.

i have the adjuster wound all the way out as far as the lock nut will let me and there is still no freeplay.

how do i create more slack in the throttle cable so i can get some freeplay?
>>
>>16142580
>implying new prices
please don't buy or finance a brand new machine as your first bike. depreciation still applies to motorcycles.

you can be out $8k now and get $5k back or be out $2k now and get $1.9k back.

also, the ninja 250 is quite a bit faster and more practical than the CRF250 and has a massive street-oriented aftermarket full of shit that will only drive resale up (except for fartcan slip-ons)

yes i do ride my bike in construction zones
>>
>>16142589
Yeah, true that.
The main reason that I'm not looking at the ninja or the R3 or Vulcan is because of my location. I'm in the middle of nowhere and the roads are pretty goddamn bad in some places. I'm not sure how well a ninja will offroad, but I do need something that can do it easily.
I'd expect the ninja to be faster since it's a street bike, and the CRF is a dirt bike, being fair.
I was supposed to be moving to Sydney, but that plan went down faster than some fat cunt off a cliff, so with where I am, it's all forest around open ground and flat plains
>>
>>16142603
It'll do fine, but the ride quality will be hell

Consider high displacement dual sports. They tend to be wound out at lower speeds so 250 rarely cuts it. A ninja will break 100, a CRF250 will typically top out in the 70s unless you change the gearing. KLR650s are really popular where I live because a number of roads are still gravel, but the only avenue towards some shoddy excuse for civilization called "spokane" is via highway.
>>
>>16142612
I'll definitely give it some thought

>>
>>16142630
yeah well as to be expected I'd hate myself if I dropped any bike. I will keep that in mind though, and I wanna get stuff like guards incase I do drop it, which I probably will one day
>>
>>16142657
most guards require fairing rape and just total the frame half the time. don't bother. buy a bike that's already been dropped (not highsided and flipped over twenty times at 80mph) and learn how not to drop it.
>>
>>16142645
My radi was pissing water all night
It's supposed to be an oil cooler

>>16142657
Guards and frame sliders are a bit of a liability
Good ones will break away before damaging your frame, but cheap ones may rip off the holes they were supposed to protect
All in all a scratched fairing is way better than a bent frame
Also it's a dirtbike, you'll drop it more times than you'll ride it
>>
>>16142661
Actually good idea. If I ended up getting the CRF250L rally, I'd be able to use the time before it came out to practice on a second hand one

>>16142663
you do have a point, but I think Honda actually sells their own guards. If they're good or not, that's another thing

Reposting because no replies and bored.

CBR250RR (MC22) or RVF400 (MC30) for second bike?
Like the sound of the I4 and the lower weight, but like the bigger power of the V4. Parts (I think) would be more available for the 250 purely because there were more of them sold here (neither were grey imports).
Probs light commuting, track days, tackling local twisties (not too far away so no lengthy tours), etc.
>>
>>16142725
I just think the 250rr looks amazing. That dash is also sick as fuck.
