Well for the first bike I'm not really concerned about power, hence looking at the 250 I've been posting. The ninja 250 is quite a bit more expensive than the crf250, or even the R3 I was also looking at. I'm not too worried about resale, but at the same time, I don't want something that I'm only going to drop money onto then never get a dollar for it later.
I'm not sure if it's a good thing, but my preferences actually are price, fuel cost and comfort in that order

i have the adjuster wound all the way out as far as the lock nut will let me and there is still no freeplay.

The main reason that I'm not looking at the ninja or the R3 or Vulcan is because of my location. I'm in the middle of nowhere and the roads are pretty goddamn bad in some places. I'm not sure how well a ninja will offroad, but I do need something that can do it easily.
I'd expect the ninja to be faster since it's a street bike, and the CRF is a dirt bike, being fair.
I was supposed to be moving to Sydney, but that plan went down faster than some fat cunt off a cliff, so with where I am, it's all forest around open ground and flat plains

Consider high displacement dual sports. They tend to be wound out at lower speeds so 250 rarely cuts it. A ninja will break 100, a CRF250 will typically top out in the 70s unless you change the gearing. KLR650s are really popular where I live because a number of roads are still gravel, but the only avenue towards some shoddy excuse for civilization called "spokane" is via highway.
