Harley Davidson produce oversized, underpowered engines in overpriced, ugly bikes that cater to people looking for the "biker" image rather than creating quality, reliable, worthwhile motorcycles.

Also everyone that rides them wears pic related.

Actually anyone can afford a harley. Check your local craigslist.

But just because you CAN afford one doesn't mean you should buy one

There are a lot of more capable bikes for solo, two-up, touring, going fast, shit roads/weather, etc, but harley alone doesn't deserve shit for making garbage bikes. Cruisers in general compromise ground clearance, suspsension travel, and engine performance for a traditional image

Also see:
Sport tourers with no excuse for being that heavy
>>
>>16077393
As in used?
What prevents you too from just checking it out beforehand
>actually i know, your dad sounds like the kind of idiot who takes his shit to the dealer for every little niggling

You can easily knock 50% off year old bikes
Anything else is usually under 25% msrp

Unless you plan to buy something that relies on that warranty to even get out of the driveway it'll be a waste of cash

IMO getting a bike used is a grat experience, any issues you didn't spot when buying it will just teach you to work on your stuff

>>
>>16077481
Move to the US if you're not already there. Buy a cheap (<$2500), clean, naked bike and keep it clean so you can sell it at a minimal loss later.

Don't worry about displacement and power unless it's not enough or way too much (1/4 throttle=speed limit, 1/2 throttle=lose license). You want to ride a bike, right? Make sure it'll still be comfortable and fun on faster roads instead of buzzy and nearing redline if you drop a gear (so not the ninja 250).

Do worry about being able to flat foot, walk, and pick up the bike.

The ninja 500, GS500, and SV650 are popular. Try not to buy a supersport that doesn't have ABS.

just like what the sticky says, buy a used bike, probably not a good idea to take out a loan for it.
Good bikes: SV650, GS500, Ninja 500 if you want a sport bike. If you can find a V-Strom, Versys, or a CB500X they would also make good starters if you are tall enough to reach the ground.
>>
Is there any rule of a thumb when it comes to the age of a bike?
There's a lot of 2003-2004 stuff I could go check relatively close to me but the idea of a 10+ yo bike doesn't appeal to me much.
How old is too old?

>>
>>16077700
it should have a proportional amount of miles to its age. if you're looking at a 2003 or 4 with like 5k miles that means that bike has been sitting around for a long fucking time. this is bad juju obviously. you want a comfortable amount of miles showing that the bike was at least ridden frequently and obviously signs that the owner gave a shit about it and took care of it

The only downside I see to getting a 250 is that, around me, most of the longer stretches of highway are 70-75mph, and my GS500 is spinning at 6k or above out of 11k at that speed. I like that the EX250 is lighter, but depending on what he plans to do with the bike makes the difference. I don't want to say that you want a bike to "grow into" but you want something that feels comfortable in the role you want for it.
>>
>>16077744
i used to ride my EX250 on the freeway at literal redline in 6th for hours. the good thing about an EX250 is you don't care about blowing up the engine. you don't need it to last forever, you just need it to last long enough to pawn off onto the next learner for what you bought it for. the bike is most likely going to be crashed and totalled long before the engine goes boom so you don't even have to feel bad about it.

Having wrenched on motorcycles for well over a decade, I have discovered that any bizarre brake problems that can't be solved through a good bleed are almost always the result of damaged master cylinder seals. The rubber just starts to fall apart and needs to be replaced.

Q3s are cheap, don't last all that long though.

S21R last longer and I adored the previous gen of the tyre.

How hektik are you trying to get? certain sport touring tyres might be up to the task depending. Y'all already seen this lean I'm sure but that was on angel GTs and my brother just did a track day on angel GTs totally fine as well.

Anything from last year that manufacturers are trying to move. You'll use them before the tire hardens so don't worry about buying from last season.

Pirelli Angel GTs another br/o/ mentioned are on sale now: http://www.sportbiketrackgear.com/pirelli-angel-gt-sport-touring-front-tires/

as are the Pilot Road 3s:

lean not come from down there

lean come from in here

seriously you don't need 50/50 road/track tyres to learn to lean, if it helps with the confidence go ahead but it's not necessary.

I would say the M7RR or S21R would both be good choices, I was looking into the M7RR myself but once the S21R was announced I knew I'd be getting that next. (Triple compound rear tyre highly resistant to squaring, amazing front confidence like the S20 EVO)
>>
>>16078644
Don't be so concerned with what "the best" is. What's best depends on your situation and your preferences, which you'll learn in time. Just get a respected brand and practice.
>>
my last full tank got me up to 120 ish miles before it got shaky and stopped on me. then i went on reserve and rode back to fill up.

It was pretty fucking scary because i stopped on a straightaway with no shoulder to stop at.

Yes, a listing here and there in Southern California. I might consider a CBR too. Used motorcycles seem more sparse recently, though.

I told myself this too when moving up from a dual sport but I was kind of disappointed with the 600 I got. Everybody made it sound like a 600cc I4 supersport was going to be an uncontrollable rocket but it's really not very fast unless I keep the revs WAY up.
>>
>>16078862
How many CCs in your dual sport?

I wonder how VFRs ride. I love the aesthetics of VFRs so much. Someone is selling a sexy '97 VFR 750 asking for 2.3k. Probably a bit expensive, but hell if it isn't a beaut'.

Conventional. First it was a really stuck bolt. Then it was mismatched forks, which took me a bit to realize that I installed the internals in the improper order. Compired to the ktm 350 and even a Yamaha 225 that was literally super fun and easy to do things with. But mine also needs work on top of that and dumping money into this bike alot of veterans I trust have told me not to and look for something different. >heavy
The Xchallenge is quite a bit heavier than the KLX
>throttle is really fucking jumpy.
Can't help you there, need to tune your carb I guess.

The KLX is an excellent starter dirt bike anon. You should probably hone your skills on it before you move on.

This is why dual sport riders are better than the rest of you. ADV bikes over 500lbs don't count

Ive riden liter bikes better than my klx. Also I did ride the xmoto in pic and was hella fun. I tip toe on the klx too along with the extended gas tank weight its a little hard to save in the dirt. Like I said though forks leak causing front breaks to be terrible. Had to replace back breaks and re jetted carb and tuned it. Also have a pumper carb I will have someone put in once I drop the $300 to make my new kx forks work with my klx 300r.

Dirt bikes might not be for you anon.

Do some work on your bike m8. Forks are easy and really only require normal tools. Brake pads are cheap.

>buy new $15 front wheel stand some anon linked a few weeks ago
I got sucker'd in to that too...
> Motorocyclesuperstor says "one piece construction for strength"
> wheel stand comes in three pieces.

It's the same cheap-ass Chinese stand sold online by a number of vendors, probably drop-shipped from the importers warehouse. I should have returned it demanding the one-piece unit they advertised, but no doubt there is a disclaimer on their bathroom wall stating "not responsible for bullshit errors." Fuck those guys.

Even Harbor Freight will do better for the money.
>>
>>16079873
I don't have anything against carbs. I just know that most people that throw an after market exhaust on their carbureted bikes don't pick up the appropriate jet kit to go with it too.

And even jet kits are far from a perfect science.

>here, lets change the number of holes on the jet to vaguely get the air/fuel mixture we are looking for

versus a precise electronic configuration that can be adjusted in intervals of 250.
>>
>>16079884

What do you ride that needs 95 octane?
>>
>>16079864
Try the super glue / epoxy method of filling in the pits.
>>
>>16079891
I will when I have the time I have been working every week and its my ride so cant have it down for too long. But I was raised on dirt bikes and love them just this klx punishes me more than even a god damn 650. I am going to fix it up and shit but I am working with not to much time and it sucks I can only do little jobs on it.
>>
>>16079920
I would but like I said I have brand new forks that just need spacers made to be put on. Straight brand new rebuild
with barely used forks.
>>
>>16079821
what does the style of fuel delivery have to do with the exhaust? Carbs can be adjusted to meet the demands of the increased flow
>>
>>16079906
jet kits are for idiots. You have to know the right setting for each jet/adjustable for your exact combo of mods.

Also, jet numbers refer to the diameter of the hole, not the number of holes drilled into the jet.

You are meant to have the rear on a stand before using the front stand as the bike will just pivot and fall over as you found out.

because hipstercucks buy them as fashion accessories, ride them around a little but can't stand wrenching their shitty 70's bike abomination so they try to offload it to the next fool

And use cycle-ergo.com to see how you'll fit on a bike.
