What kind of work are you doing? I Had to replace the stator and regulator when I got it (I guess this is a problem for just about every 80's GS) My spedometer is seized up and tach broken so il have to replace those. Petcock is fucked and just lets gas flow freely which isnt the end of the world but it does leak a bit. Minor oil leak around the heads. and I broke a fucking bolt trying to take off the pipes. Has not been an issue yet but looks bad. Chain is totally rusted, and the rear drum brake is worn out. Lots of little things as well but I still use the thing as a daily comutter and weekend rider.

Former CBR300R anon reporting.

Insurance covered my gear. Apparently I was wearing $1,100 worth of shit. Toe still hurts in a way that's hard to describe. The toenail doesn't seem to be growing back at all after two weeks. Half hoping it doesn't. Pro tip: you really fucking need toenails. It's a lot of fun when you bleed through the bandage and the blood dries into your shoe, and then you go to take your shoe off at the end of the day and it rips the bandage which is also dried into your nail bed. Feet and blood is also an interesting smell. Going to sue the living shit out of the woman that decided signaling is optional and that the center lane is a turn lane.

Shit has settled enough to where I can actually ask myself if I want to buy another motorcycle. I rode every damn day, and it ended up being a larger part of my life than I really expected or even knew at the time of the accident. Losing that has honestly been comparable to if someone just shot your dog in the face for no reason.

I can't tell if crashing was a warning, and I got off easy, or if it was a challenge to be navigated, and I should get back on. When do you decide it's time to stop?

http://www.motorcyclenews.com/new-gear/2016/october/hjc-tempts-you-to-the-dark-side-with-star-wars-helmets/
>>
>>16080449
The question is, do you actually want to keep riding or do you want to stop?

If you feel too scared then riding isn't for you. If you take it as a reality check and want to continue then do it.

First crashes are the biggest moment when you ride motorcycles m8. I took mine as a learning experience and moved on.

If you got some money to play around with now then you can probably upgrade to a bigger bike as well.

>>16080449
>When do you decide it's time to stop
If in your mind there is a stopping point besides death, stop right now. Riding is not a hobby, it's a mental disorder with no cure. I crashed a few weeks ago, I won't walk straight for another two weeks at best, and I was on crutches for nearly 3. The only thing on my mind is how much it's going to cost to fix and when I can ride again.
>>
>>16080497
Get adjustable then. It's worthwhile
>>
>>16080461
Before the entire experience of motorcycling, I always used to scoff a little at the "RAAD UR DAH" types. I thought I understood the appeal, but thought that the almost pious zeal was a little ridiculous.

Now I totally fucking understand. On the outside, it's just a mode of transportation, but once you're in it, it's a fucking intractable piece of you. Once you know it, you'll always feel its absence, and for it be incomplete.

>>16080473
The more I think about it, the more I want to continue. I think it's just taken this long for everything in my head to come to rest. It's refreshing to hear that I'm not alone in my thought process here. In retrospect, I'm actually a little surprised that I made it as long as I did.

Funnily enough, I don't really think I want a bigger bike. The 300 was slow as shit, but god damnit that thing was so much fun. I'm still eyeing the new CBR250RR. Or a DRZ400. Or an RC390. Swinging your dick around on a Daytona looks like the time of your life, but I don't think that's really my style.

I4s sound so nice though...

motorcycling for me is a pretty pure piece of self-expression. you can take the jaded, pessimistic outlook and say muh special snowflake; believe me, i did for a long time. but i came to the realization that just because an expression lacks uniqueness doens't mean it lacks value.

"ride or die" (or its ilk) doesn't come from machismo or self-righteousness, it comes from an experience that teaches you that you are more at risk of dying than other people -- 38 times more likely, if some statistics are to believe. it's a badge of honor but it's also representative of a coming to terms with your own mortality that a lot of people really never have to develop. yeah, you can die. people can, have, do, and will continue to die and become seriously injured and/or maimed for life on motorcycles.

if it weren't dangerous, it wouldn't be fun.

Motorcycling is the tits anon. It brings me joy like only a few things do.

It's also my primary mode of transportation (I don't own a car).

I've already made peace with the possibility of injury or death.

It's worth noting that as you keep riding it gets somwehat less dangerous. You start getting road smart after your first year or two or so.

YO man, either go with a naked with lots of usable power like SV650/MT07,
Or a liter bike (not kidding) they are much more assisted in everything, they are really easy to ride at street legal speed, and you can still crank them on the track.

Or if you are really afraid, just go with a scrambler, or god forbid, a Harley/Indian.
You can also apt for a Aprilia RS 125 (unless you regularly go above the RS125 tops sped of 200km/h).
It will be just like the CBR300R but lighter and with as much (if not more) power, because Aprilia A BEST.

The acceleration is redeculous, you really have to pay attention to what you're doing. And I saw this coming from a 100hp bike.

Though if you take it to the track the burden of being faster than everyone will be on you :^)

My bud on that is just 2 seconds faster than me on my old 600 on a minute and a half track.

welp so I took the zizzer for an MOT today..
mechanic failed it on 3 points
- rear wheel bearing has 'excessive play'
- rear rotor is warped
- exhaust excessively loud and blowing

am skeptical over points 1 & 2, put bike on paddock stand and had a play with the back wheel, obvs I'm no mechanic but there was a max of 1mm play side to side which doesnt feel excessive to me... Rotor is obviously making contact with the pads as it is shiny silver, apart from one stretch on the outer part of the rotor (maybe 1cm deep into the rotor, about 6cm long) which is black and dirty so much not be touching pads. However the rotor doesn't get hot after rides.

I'm conscious that mechanics will exaggerate or flat out lie about problems with the vehicle to get your monies, and this guy was no exception, he was very keen for me to let them fix it all for an unspecified price.

3rd issue upon inspection is legit, there are a number of rather large holes in a very rusty set of downpipes. Options here are new stainless steel pipes from ebay (£174) or old rusty (though without holes) original pipes for about 90.

How difficult would it be for me (and likelihood of me irreversibly fucking it up) to change the downpipes? And am I being silly about the other issues? Think i'm gonna deal with the exhaust first and then take it to a different test centre and hope they dont agree with the previous MOT diagnoses

it's not fucked, it's just not in a good condition :^)
it's like a shitbike
it's basically a shit-bike.
it still works perfectly, most of the stuff is cosmetics like wires not put through the right holes n stuff, the only thing that is seriously fucked is the front wheel losing air.
the other stuff is minor. it's repainted at some parts but working perfectly fine.

If the rotor was warped you would feel it in the pedel when you brake. Its pretty obvous.

There shouldnt be any actual play in the rear wheel, and if there is less than 100,000 miles and the axle is tight, there wont be.

If by down pipes you mean the header that bolts to the cylinder head, buy new gaskets if you can afford it.

>5th gear
>crossed 80kmph
was this a 250 'sports bike' kek
btw you should apply both brakes at the same time noob
if you watch pro racers braking they are often on the front wheel only
braking from 300+kph
the back wheel will have less and less braking ability the harder you try to brake. the front will only lock up if you grip that lever with retard strength, but braking really hard you might lock up the wheel a tiny bit so be ready to slightly reduce pressure
always brake with the front lad just realize on wet or dirt roads they will lock up easy so you will lose stability solution:slow down a bit and dont brake so hard but prepare for the rear to slide out in any emergency brake sitaution

yeah that's what i've read everywhere: when i brake using the rear theres no pulsing or juddering. bike has 28,000 miles, are you saying that the 'play' i felt is something other than the wheel bearings? Should i check the axle?

holes in the exhaust are where the 4 pipes coming from the exhaust ports merge into eachother

For a learner any size cc under 600 is ok as long as it has gears and a clutch otherwise you won't learn anything about shifting.

>165cm tall
This doesn't matter much but a lighter bike will be helpful while you learn to balance at low speed.
My dad is about 165cm and rides a
Speed Triple faster than probably 98% of everyone on /dbt/ and shorter riders WILL get very good at balancing their bikes quickly if they don't give up. He only dislikes the taller dirt bikes because its so useful to stand up on hard tracks but don't let height discourage you from riding because it barely matters trust me.

150cc will be kinda slow but if you're riding in slow places or take it offroad a bit it will be enough.

If you can get a 250 up to 500cc it will be good to teach you a bit more about managing your speed and will be more fun to ride.
Do you have any examples of bikes you can buy?

The problem with cafe racers is that a lot of them are unfinished projects and are missing parts, or they have changed the suspension so much without designing it properly that it's difficult to ride, or have changed so much on the engine that it runs like shit and needs a good tuning.

Get an SR400 or something. I doubt most of /dbt/ knows what bikes you have in your market so it's hard to tell you what to buy.

>>
>>16081637
Be sure, when you are yankin' your wheel, that the play you feel is the wheel bearing not the swingarm bearings. The swingarm bearings should also be zero play, but they are so far from the whel that a tiny bit of play there feels huge all the way back at the wheel. Loose swingarm bearings manifest as a high-speed weave or headshake.

Either way, that may be a legit problem.
>>
>>16081662
Cafe racers are associated with hipsters, and DBT hates hipsters because they are better-looking, have more money, and hot girlfriends that DBT will never get

Changing downpipes is easy as fuck, the hard part is just removing enough to actually get them out. Remember to buy new exhaust gaskets too.

If you have a rear wheel stand you can check the rotor for warpage by letting the bike run and watch the rotor spinning and check with a dial gauge for any side-side warpage, the whole rotor can still end up shiny with warping but the mechanic might have been stretching rotor 'damage' to fail the bike.

Side to side rear wheel play shouldn't exist whatsoever. Again use a dial gauge clamped on the swingarm with the rear wheel off the ground and give the WHEEL not tire a good twisting. Rear wheel play is fucked up to ride on and is just asking for trouble. Make sure everything is properly tightened before you try to diagnose this though.

What do you guys think of the F700GS? I used to want a supersport but after realizing I like to take long trips I'm looking for something that can handle a lot of comfy riding, some off-roading (mostly dirt roads, not singletrack) and still be an OK around town bike for commuting to work. I'm on an R3 right now so the power will be an upgrade (40hp to 75hp, more torques too) but will I be able to cruise on the highway comfortably without revving the shit out of the bike (worst part of the R3 desu)
>>
>>16081612
Breaks are poo quality on the CL500 i agree. Riding at that speed is death on that bike. Still i beat the Yamaha sports cuck and no scratches. Faggot cuck.
>>
>>16081697
Hey if you think it looks alright then just go try it out. The suspension looks outdated and tires could be better, and the bars are set fairly low so you will be leaned over while you ride but if it runs properly and rides straight you won't do too bad.

The FZ will have better suspension and handling so will be more forgiving to ride and might be more reliable.
For a beginner anything will be ok and the more you like the bike you get the more you will probably like riding. Hey you don't have to own it forever either just try to convince them for a test-ride so you know how it might feel to sit on.

Suzuki, Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha these are the big Japanese brands (are there really any others) and are generally known to be solid bikes from the factory and fairly priced too but even the best brands can't compensate for an owner that treats it like shit so always look for signs of neglect

Chinese brands are luck of the draw.. ive known of some owners who have had no problems with years of riding and some that break constantly - the quality control is shit and their parts are average at the best but I haven't known any italika or vento owners.

Would not have crashed. It was a deliberate accident. Car cuck wouldn't move. I know for sure he didn't want to move, later he said you were like vrrom vrrom. He didn't understand i didn't wana lose seconds honking and my hand was on throttle so making a noise would warn him to move high speed approaching. A few days later they sealed the shortcut the car cuck wanted to take.
He could have moved or not got in. He did it on purpose .
>>
>>16081800
let me get this right, you, a car and another bike were racing
you probably beat the car at the lights but the car actually passes you and gets in front
then the car accepts his victory and stops accelerating but youre still speeding up so try to warn them by reving your already reving engine which probably sounds like a missed gear by the way..
then when you realize hes at a steady speed you try to brake and press your horn then by hitting the back brakes (huge noob mistake please learn) then the front but you didnt brake hard enough and didnt use front brake early enough so you hit the car
while this cuck sportsbike probably saw the whole thing coming and wheelied off into the night laughing the whole way
pls anon
pls
>>
>>16081825
No press clutch and rev. vroom vroom. Already 5th gear so can't miss a gear. First reaction when seeing car in front of you not moving.
>>
>>16081818
also watch the first part of this video closely https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cElUa_iVOzA

look at the back wheel. it is actually coming off the ground. there are better examples with 3 or 4cm of space between the tire and the ground but the rear tires here are barely doing any work. a tire in the air cannot do anything to slow the bike
this is in a race where they want to brake from the maximum speed possible as well so they arent trying to show off like an endo. this is as extreme braking as you can ask for

the front brake should always be your first application when you really need to stop the bike. you should lightly apply the rear if you are suspicious you will need to stop aggresively but always use your front brake for maximum braking power

i hear cruiser riders trying to say the rear brake is best all the time so im taking you seriously now
im not trying to be mean, its great you werent hurt or worse but please just learn something from this and be a bit more careful

>>16081840
your first reaction when you see a car not moving should be to either brake as hard as you can or pick the best way around them if you can do it.
deaf people can get a driving license and lots of people listen to music so loud they cant hear anything outside the car anyway. then theres people who just dont care and like to hurt others which you should expect
they really wouldnt be listening to you changing gears and probably barely hear you because you are in front of them too it has been fun anon but im stopping this conversation. admit you fucked up and dont do it again. peace
