Former CBR300R anon reporting.

Insurance inspected the bike today. The call went something like this.
>we're going to declare it a total loss
>ok, I didn't get a good look at it after the accident because of my injuries, how bad is it?
>well you can see where the bike hit the car on the right side, there's some blue paint transfer and then it must have slid for a while on the left side
>and something is dripping from the engine, it doesn't look good
>cry a little
>we need the key to get the mileage so we can get it to copart

This is sort of good news. Now I'm not stuck with a bike that I'll never be able to sell. On the bad side, I can't afford to get another bike. Not for a long time.

Considering suing the woman who hit me. Still no police report.

Podiatrist said my toenail will likely never be the same. Fracture runs down into the joint.

Be careful, y'all.

I somewhat doubt that.

The collision would have happened to me in any vehicle. I was literally going in a straight line at a constant speed. Sure, I was probably pretty reckless on a pretty regular basis, but that had nothing to do with me going down. It may have been a matter of time, and maybe it's a good thing that time never came. I got off easy, considering.

>I'm like a crystal ball

nah I remember reading this.

>I got to be a decent rider pretty quickly, but I'm getting to the point where I can throw this little bike around really pretty well, I think.

and I knew you were going to crash soon, I just knew it.

Pride comes before the fall, always does. Was bad luck involved? sure, but I bet in hindsight some more defensive riding, lane positioning, getting ready on the brakes in any potentially dangerous situation would have helped.

You can't rely on other people not to die on a motorcycle, you need to ensure that when they try to kill you that you have an exit strategy.

hey dbt, when i roll on the throttle by the tiniest amount while barely moving my bike sort of splutters about. when i give it more gas then it's all g. My understanding is that the carbies have 2 fuel jets, one regular and one small one. I prolly need to clean it out right?

Also how much free play is acceptable on the throttle? like I have 1cm of wriggle on the throttle before the it actually revs the engine

BMW makes the best motorcycles. Period. With that said, they tend to be fairly unreliable when compared with their Japanese counterparts. Normally, this wouldn't be an issue. Anyone with half a brain can service their own motorcycle.

But....thanks to exquisite ass backwards German engineering and strict control on parts availability...it's a pain in the fucking ass to DIY/self service your own BMW Motorcycle. This is usually compounded by the fact that they are equipped with a host of electronics that can only be accessed with proprietary dealer tools.

And no. Their bikes are too expensive for a beginner to ride. You'll be out several thousand dollars just from dropping it. But bikes like the F800 GT are indeed very beginner friendly when it comes to power and riding position etc

superior powerplant, suspension components, and brakes for one. at its time the f4i was a top contender in its displacement class. it's far from modern but the ZZR600 was never intended to be anything more than an up-jumped budget bike.

the insurance cost premium is because the f4i is an actual sportbike. insurers hate sportbikes

The 2005-2008 ZZR600 is literally a rebadged 2002 ZX-6R. It's a real sport bike. It looks more "sporty" to me than an F4i.Has dual 3-piston calipers and everything.

Also the CBR will never be this happy.

The F4i gets memebike tax so I'd be more likely to spend a little less and get an F3.

no lol got that pic from the craigslist ad too. Everything I read just comes down to personal preference between the two (and the other japanesies really) which is why I've been searching craigslist for all of the japanese sport bikes. The ZZR just seems to come out cheaper in most cases.

Yes, I learned on a 700GS.

The higher end bikes are too pricey in terms of servicing because of the ridiculous amount of electronics but the 800 and 700 are fairly minimal in electronics and they're pretty easy to work on.

Other than that, they have very friendly seating position and power delivery and good power. I felt more confident and secure on it than I did on the shitty 300 I had to use in msf, shit was like night and day.

Get 700 because fuck changing tube tires. Just don't fall for lowered suspension meme like I did, I regret it, shit is balls once you get enough experience.

Funny story, rode all the way down. Was a lil under two hours down. Fairly overcast and misty most of the way, no big deal. A cruiser loser can forego learning, brake heavily for every corner, lay er down to avoid a squirrel in the road, and waddle around parking lots to their hearts content because their bike is too intimidating to try serious riding.

In all seriousness i think there is something wrong with buying an uncomfortable high performance bike if you have no idea how to ride it properly and no desire to ever learn to use it.
People that ride sports bikes down highways for an example, why not get a power cruiser?

at least then you are in comfort while going slow and enjoying the scenery.

thats my thoughts on the matter anywho.
>>
>>16031077
Yes, and also because sportbikes are much easier to handle because they combine a low weight, a low seat height, good ground clearance, and manageable torque.

Yeah, you will most likely never ride at a level where a sportbike's cornering ability and acceleration can come together to make you truly fast, so you might as well buy a more practical cruiser. But a cruiser is murder on a new rider. If you actually want to learn, you will, so you might as well reduce the chances of dropping your first shitty bike (or spending $2k on repairs for your first nice bike) and pick up a used 500cc+ "sport" bike off craigslist. And if you don't want to learn, fuck you, stay on easy mode.

Low-speed maneuvering noob has returned. I was initially having trouble with low-speed turns and line selection, and I've done a few days of practice and seen what exactly I need to fix.

Just a quick question that has arisen from practice - I've been using my rear brake and found its amazingly effective for slow and super tight turns and movements, and tried my front brake and found it ridiculously hard to modulate as well. My question is should I be primarily using rear brake profusely, try to use front brake, or use clutch (which I haven't tried) when doing extremely tight maneuvers and turns?

rear brake and slip clutch if it's really low speed, if it's not, just ride the rear brake.

Front brake isn't as bad as people say in low speed (it's really not) but it's only useful if you're doing motogymkhana stuff and trying to do it as fast as possible.

Rear brake is more useful because it doesn't just slow you down, it also attenuates and smoothens torque to the rear wheel.
>>
>>16031340
a lot of people completely ignore their rear brake except in extremely specific circumstances. its main application in a performance environment is in scrubbing off a tiny bit of speed at-lean while trail braking. application of the front brake upsets the chassis and chopping throttle upsets your rear contact patch. the rear brake is an effective way to modulate how much power is getting to the ground without cutting throttle. for hard braking either your slipper clutch is kicking in, you're lifting the rear off the ground, or it's just losing traction altogether from compression braking so it's not necessarily always applicable.

for city riding, the rear brake is awesome in low speed shit. also really handy for gracefully handling launching if you find yourself stopped pointing up a hill.

get comfy with that front brake though, it's the single most effective way of making your bike quit moving at the speed of light.
>>
>>16031364
>>16031369

So if I had to summarise:

Nearly stopped = clutch/rear
Very slow-moderate speed = rear
High speed = front

And:
Controlling turns = front to shave speed, rear to stabilise

>>
>>16031377
yeah feathering is always an option too for real low speed shit. i personally use my front brake for pretty much everything, it's just how i learned. i rarely touch the rear at all unless i'm leaned over and feeling too skittish about the angles involved to apply any front brake. and even then i don't ride so balls-out that hardcore trail braking is a part of my routine, so i rarely have to touch it all, really.

remember that downshifting does basically the same thing as applying the rear brake as long as you're keeping those revs up
>>
>>16031364
oh and refer to a previous post of mine for more information on clutch slipping and low speed ergo avoiding drops and being confident.

http://archive.4plebs.org/o/thread/15915240/#15916488

>>16031377
Sure, I wouldn't think too hard about the rear brake mid turn for now though, not many people have the killer rear brake instincts, I certainly don't. I think most people overthink the rear and it causes them to crash (ie locking it up under emergency braking, feeling like they have to use the rear because they're in a corner and axing themselves ala https://youtu.be/OVvkSQmqm3M?t=16 )

If you really really need to get rid of speed, pick the bike up, feed on some front brake then whip it back into the corner.

The max I ever do is a little dab of rear sometimes when opening the throttle to soften out the transition.
>>
>>16031387

Is there a quick summary for how forces act on bikes? Like some kind of diagram or just text that tells me how each type of braking moves the chassis, how it affects suspension, how operating the clutch moves the chassis and suspension, throttle, etc.

Also, thanks to all for the advice thus far.
>>
>Americans giving advice about braking

It depends on your bike, but generally:
You use both, first shifting weight to the front then lifting the rear a bit

At low speed just keep the clutch near biting point and modulate the rear
>>
>>16031386
Which is kinda my point.

A more strung 250, like a hornet or even GSX/CBR etc, run on par to 60mph that a competent 2L NA 'performance' japper is capable of. You don't need much more for commuting responsibly, unless you do longer trips and don't wanna sit at 10krpm all day.

A 900RR is just a sneeze away from losing your license or head, which is the appeal I can understand, but to say it's perfectly fine is just so ignorant it boggles the mind.

Nobody likes that buzzing. It's a luxury factor, like people who buy sedans with monster engines
>losing your license or your head
the sky's the speed limit when the cops aren't looking

>implying they'll even give chase if it's at night and you cut your plate light
>>
>>16031399
i don't actually have any reference for that and my own understanding is bro science and just what i've intuited from riding bikes over the years.

front and rear brakes are both going to upset the chassis, but because of where the front brake is relative to the bike's center of mass, braking forces originating there are going to upset the chassis a lot more. for rear braking under throttle, you're mostly just making the engine fight the brakes a bit instead of 100% towards fighting gravity/the bike's inertia/your fat ass/whatever. that's the crux of why it CAN be safer to apply rear in the corners than the front.

in simple terms, you get a fuck ton of nose dive from the front brake, not as much from the rear. applying throttle does the opposite and lightens the front of the bike, eventually into a wheelie if you fuck up/so desire.
>>
>>16031422
if anyone has a better understanding of this stuff please feel free to chime in, i'd like to know too actually.
>>
>>16031429
In corners you generally never want to apply brakes, maybe some enginebraking at best
In emergency cases first you use the rear to get the bike upright, then you modulate the front to a stop
>>
>>16031416
>Nobody likes that buzzing
Not many, I'd wager, but I know a fair amount that don't give two fucks either. You don't really buy bikes for luxurious transport, either. Especially not on a supersport.

>The sky's the limit
>Cut the plate light and fuck the police xD
Not sure what logic I expected in defense of buying an RR as their first bike.
>buy supersport to learn on
>Because I can just do a runner in the night
Really?
>>
>>16031436
i mean that's not entirely true. at any lean angle less than max, at neutral throttle input you theoretically have some traction available for tightening your line. that's adding another layer of complexity that's not necessarily beneficial for newer riders though
>>
>>16031422
Broscience or not, thanks for the advice - the throttle and brake movements make way more sense once someone spells it out for you.

>>16031436
Doesn't braking just slow you down as opposed to bringing you upright? I always thought braking in a lean is a recipe for a lowside. Also, where the hell does trailbraking fit into all this?
>>
>>16031442
I have no idea what kind of mushrooms you're on, but how will braking tighten your line, mr. No Bike?
>>
>>16031437
>You don't buy bikes for luxurious transport
There's a point where people draw the line. Sometimes it's a windshield, or a less buzzy engine.
>not sure what i expected
I'm just saying, it's not a guaranteed arrest and loss of license unless you have one of those police departments with a fucking hayabusa. Also, most supersports let you stay comfortably far away from the "on" switch, which, by the way, won't get you to jail speeds instantly on many bikes.
>making up arguments
i said you can learn on a supersport
i didn't say that had anything to do with how likely you are to actually be arrested for speeding on one

Now, let's say you're not a hooligan and really are a dork with shitty throttle control. So shitty you sneezed and went WOT instead of chopping it and were in just the right gear to go 20 over the limit. The cops will probably understand if you're A: white and B: respectful, so don't worry about it and go ride a 125cc dirtbike for the next month because you'd die on a 250 with that level of skill.
>>
>>16031454
I'm the OP noob, but I thought trailbraking is the exact idea of braking to tighten your line during a lean? I've just always heard that trailbraking done wrong = lowside
>>
>>16031453
High/low siding are the result of losing traction and over correcting/sliding it out
It can happen with too much brake or throttle alike
Braking, when done correctly will want to pull you back straight

Trailbraking is cutting the throttle and/or feathering the brakes to slow down in a corner
>>
>>16031454
>No Bike

>>
>>16031469
Ah, so gradual brake = forces push the bike back upright and sitting up straight becomes easier, thus making the bike upright, whereas stupid brake = lose traction due to tyre lockup, etc.

I feel dumb as fuck actually saying this stuff out loud because it seems so obvious

Watch totw2 for an explanation on why hitting the brakes actually picks the bike up.

as for trailbraking, not for the road, there are like 2 places where racers crash the most in terms of lowsiding, one is at about 1/2 way through turning in where braking and lean angle are at about 50% each and totally balanced, the force overloads the contact patch and the bikes go down, and the other one is at the apex where cracking open the throttle pushes the front tyre too much and it washes out when you crack the throttle.

Those problems probably won't happen at road speeds, but you shouldn't be aiming to trailbrake on the road, I just get my braking done before the corner and have the throttle cracked already as I'm entering because it keeps the bike nice and stable and easy to manage (even if it's slow).

With that being said I think you still need to know how to trailbrake because it could save your arse if you come in too fast on a corner, it's something I'm still working on myself.

imagine this turn as a continuum of your traction. going in a straight line, your bike isn't fighting any centrifugal forces, its entire traction can be devoted to a straight line. as you increase lean angle, centrifugal forces increase and there is that much less traction available. at 90% brake, the other 10% is being used for lean angle. if you applied 91% brake one or both wheels would break loose. at 50% brake, the other 50% is used by the bike fighting cornering forces. once it hits green it goes back up the other way except now it's with throttle. you gradually get back onto the throttle until you're completely vertical and devoting 100% of your traction to acceleration

B appears to be trail braking
Trail braking like that pic WILL fuck you up if you don't get it right.
I wouldn't recommend trying to brake that deep into the corner unless you're racing and know your bike and the road very well. Just start by braking a bit later and braking as you drop your bike into the curve, but smoothly letting off as you coem around the corner. That picture actually looks more like trail braking technique for cars IMO.
