Can I learn good enough habits on a (manual) scooter after a year's riding that I can justify buying a not-so beginner bike (BMW G650GS - I feel like it's too flashy to be a beginner) now? Or should I go and get Ninja 250 and double check I'm not retarded before spending too much money?

>>
>>16025399

See, this is what I think bc I think I'll still be learning on the 650, so whynot.png

But I'm always worried about dropping it bc I want to ride like a hooligan after a year of shitty vespa-ing
>>
>>16025386
G650GS is sort of considered a beginner bike... that big single is pretty tame. Only caution i would give is that you should make sure the bike isn't too tall to be comfortable for you. If you want a less expensive alternative look into a KLR650
>>
>>16025408
i'd rather just take a big, fat, watery shit right in front of their door then knock and run.
>>
>>16025416
I hear good things about Vespas actually.
I look at it this way, if you drop it you drop it. It's whatever. At the end of the day it's just a bike. Just don't think about it.
>>
>>16025416
Could always get a used ninja or sv650 for a bit cheaper and save the bm for later and get an even better one
>>
>>16025416
>I want to ride like a hooligan after a year of shitty vespa-ing
Pfffhahahaha.
Nigger I've been riding scooters for years and just started riding a bike. You'll never be able to do that. You need bike experience to do that.

Riding the scooter only helps with getting handy with the controls and getting road experience.
>>
>>16025423
>>16025425

I've sat on the bike and feel super comfy, actually, bc long inseam
Fuck it I'm doing this, hold my beer m8s

Do y'all reckon I can still learn to lean hard on a sort-of top-heavy bike?

Also the Vespa has actually been super fun, plus 200cc of fury kind of makes me view anything as a performance beast, even a 650 single
>>
>>16025432

Hooligan for me just means being able to pop a wheelie without fear of scraping my bodywork and maybe some light offroad and tiny jumps

I'm too much of a pussy to really be doing anything else that's insane

>>
>>16025444
you aren't going to get supersport type leans on a tall adv bike like that, you'll run out of tire before you get knee down. it acts more like a dirtbike. If you are looking for more on road capability you want to find a more sport focused bike.

put some sticky tyres on it's good to go.

won't run out of tyre but you will probably run out of clearance and the suspension will be a little soft.

this. any modern bike with modern radial tires will lean until it levers itself off the ground. for some bikes that happens sooner than others, especially if you're riding a big gay cruiser built for fags, but the fact remains.

how can i fix a broken tab which i screw the side fairing into?

on the right hand side, there's 3 screws at the top of the side fairing. the middle one, the tab you screw into snapped off.

can i just super glue it in place? i was just thinking of putting a nut on the inside of the fairing as the fairing sits fine without it but looks weird without the screw

Cosmetic damage can total them because the repairs must make the bike good as new. If it came with fairings, it gets fairings. OEM replacements only. Insurance does not do streetfighter rice.

But you do

so don't make claims if you're not ready to have a totaled bike

Was this stability control or traction control?

go slow on your first sessions, most crashes happen near the start of the day because people are too keen, just wait and work your way up to speed.

ask somebody experienced about lines if there's any corners you're struggling with, lines are more important than lean angle.

Try and make a braking marker for each bend, braking at the track intensity will be the hardest thing for you to to come to grips with.

if your rear wheel spun up then the TCS should limit the engine power. And I didn't know motorcycles had ESC. I guess it could hit the rear brake a bit if you were close to tucking the front end but wouldn't that weight shift you more to the front? I don't know how ESC would work on a bike.

I have done some research into this insanity because i've never fucking heard of a bike with anything like a "stability control" outside of the slide control on the R1s and I have come back with this nugget of knowledge.

ASC or Automatic Stability Control Is just traction control.

See BMW have two trim levels of traction control, they have ASC which is just the normal road going one, then DTC which is the track one that gains some extra features like slick mode, up/down quickshifter etc.

But they're both just traction control.

they're all the same shit and none of them does anything better

if you're up for restriction go for a SV650 and not a shitty 500
>>

The CB is easier to work on, for one. He could also buy obe that's already been restricted, that's what I did.

if he can find a restricted one sure he can go for it, otherwise not worth it you're getting the same deal. instead of wasting 100 bucks on the restrictor he can get new springs, far better investment.
>>
>>16026203
What I mean is, on the CB it's easier to get to shit. For one, the fuel petcock isn't under the tank pointing inwards like on the GS which is just plain stupid.

I'm the Italianfag who's about to buy the SV with 5k km.

The guy sent me some other pics of the chain after I went checking the bike, what other pics can I ask him for people to be able to give me some advice?

I know, I know, it's not the same as bringing an expert to check the bike out but it's still something.
>>
>>16026212
The chain can always be replaced, the thing i'd worry about is the fact that the oil was low in the first serie of pics while the owner said it was just replaced.
>>
>>16026212
can't tell anything about a chain just looking at it, you need to check for dead spots.

I'm sure it'll be fine though, Just get some kerosene and clean it + lube it again when you buy the bike and that'll clean up good imo.

>>
>>16026163
I'm from Slovenia, i don't really have a budget per se, but it would be nice if I could get a decent bike for cheap. I already looked at prices of used GS500Fs, and they seem to be in the 2000-2500€ range, which isn't too much for me
>>
>>16026241
Bullshit. The GS has a fuel tap accessible from the outside, which only has "open", "prime" and "reserve" positions. If you don't want gas to spill out you have to unscrew the tank, lift it a little, get a screwdriver in under the tank from the right and turn the petcock screw which is under the tank above the tap (left side) and points to the right.
On the CB you only have the one petcock with open, closed and reserve positions.

t. owned both and worked on them
Though maybe the newer GSs changed that. I had a 1997 model.
>>
>>16026216
As the guy said the bike was on the kickstand, leaned on the side, of course you couldn't see the oil.

>>16026212
Why are you concerned about the chain? Chains are fairly cheap. You should be worrying about the engine, suspension, petrol tank etc
>>
>>16026274
Ask him for a video of a cold start and revving after the bike has idled for 5 mins.

Engine shouldn't rattle, should start up easily.

The petcock and fuel tap were directly connected iirc, screwed into each other like.
English isn't my first language, maybe you should say valve instead of petcock. I'm not 100% clear on the difference between those words.

The petcock is the entire unit that controls fuel flow from your tank. It is opened up by a vacuum while the engine is running so it automatically turns off whenever it is not running. So you can just leave it to ON when you take the tank off and it will not pour out fuel.

That's why it has a PRIME setting, which allows fuel to flow without the vacuum.

I see. In any case, the GS has a fuel valve seperate from the pri/open/res selector which has to be accessed from underneath the tank. The CB doesn't. It's way more comfortable. Generally, working on the CB is less fiddly.

i live in a college town and more often than not, somebody's shitbike gets stolen, right from under their nose. i see it on fb occasionally. like 300cc or some natty r6, and im wondering, WHY and how?

are people leaving their keys in them? is a thief betting on the bike having enough gas to get to a safehouse? are they towing these fucking things with ratchet straps? tossing them in a pickup? WHY SHIT BIKES, what the fuck, chime the fuck in if youre a bike thief, explain this dumb shit

It's not bad I just don't like it that much, you can't see as well, you can't go as fast, don't have as much grip, everyone drives crazier in the rain for no apparent reason and all your leather needs to be dried out when you get home.

Riding in the rain is not a very difficult task, just go easy on the inputs, if you have tyres that are made to be good in the rain like Pilot roads, or angel GTs or even S20/S21Rs you will be laughing in terms of the technique part of it, it's dead simple won't be a problem. Some people are all macho about riding in the rain and I don't understand it, it's really easy it's just not very fun unless you're popping the clutch every intersection to get it spinning up a bit.

Tires on the KLX wore out but the broken down EXC has good tires of the same size. I was almost willing to try to just get the parts to make the EXC hubs fit the KLX but that would cost money I don't want to spend. Instead I'm going to have to change an extra set of tires (which I hate doing) to get the good ones on the KLX.

chillax, it literally just cuts the throttle/reduces torque so your tire doesn't slip. You make it sound like that's unachievable by an human being. my rear slides all the time, get off the throttle smoothly and it catches itself after half a second. You're fucked in the wet without TCS but don't be a retard and go full hektik in wet.

It makes sense on +200hp 160kg motogp machines that will outright fuck you up if you breath at the throttle but if you're just an average track rider wanting to get rid of your chickenstrips you DON'T NEED IT but it's NICE TO HAVE.

of course you don't need it, at no point have I said you need it.

I just find it really odd that the people of /dbt/ have a superiority complex about rider aids when undoubtedly if any group of people could stand to benefit from them it's fucking /dbt/.

You guys can't hold a bike perfectly on the limit of traction, I know you can't.

So why do people here act like they're just too good for rider aids? I just want to know why people with little to no riding skill have such extreme egos and prides to uphold.

>of course you don't need it, at no point have I said you need it.

alrighty then m8, at least we both are in agreement here. No one will ever be able to hold the traction as perfect as TCS. I guess some people just prefer controlling the slide if it happens. It's not - that - hard if you have some experience and I can see why people wouldn't want TCS. I think that's just tackling the issue of losing traction 2 different ways, first let a computer handle it and never worry about and secondly, handle it yourself but with a higher risk but lets be honest, it always feels cool as fuck if you catch the slide, no other upsides.
>>
>>16027270
because it's the internet and you can pretend to be anything you want. as far as /dbt/ is concerned, if you can ride on the freeway at 150mph, touch your knee down every once in a while, and have a uniformly colored, smooth as a baby's ass rear tire you're a hidden talent expert motorcyclist one step below valentino rossi. especially if you're riding a literbike
>>
>>16027309
valentino rossi has traction control on his bike though.

That's the part of this puzzle I find most difficult to understand.
>>

/dbt/'s mentality is peter-centric. if you ride a literbike you are automatically superior to everyone who doesn't because a literbike has more power on tap and dealing with more power means you're a better rider. the thread culture is geared towards making literbike riders feel powerful, in control, and above all, superior.

TCS is a system which is an equalizer. in the constant /dbt/ dick measuring contest if you say you are comfortable with TCS, you are automatically a worse rider than someone else who doesn't "need" to use TCS to ride "well." this is no bueno because everyone is insecure about their skill and fostering this competitive environment. it's important to the ego, and 4chan is a pure expression of egos interacting with no accountability.

no TCS, no <peters. if you think differently than a 19 year old power ranger screaming down the freeway on a bike bought by daddy's money, you're a nobike.

great thread culture guys
