not really an option for me, the licencing in Korea is weird. getting a 125cc licence is pathetically easy, you technically only need a car licence, but anything higher and the test is stupidly hard

What you ride isn't important

it doesn't matter if you are on a 50cc scooter or a 1.2L chopper.

what matters is where you ride, and how you ride

I'd take one of those Chinese 125 Wins and a few months in Vietnam than a Hayabusa on boring roads

Hell i'd gladly join Ed March on his 90cc honda world tour than have some gigantic monster bike and stay in my hometown

Use a virtual machine, not a USB stick. Much easier to deal with and you can run a variety of OS without rebooting.
>>
>>15992832
I rode about 50 miles the other day with my backpack though, all it carried was a pair of shoes, a folder and lunchbox. Felt fine.
>>
>>15992815
Okay but how. The Sv weighs 195 kg and has 75 horsepower. The shiver has 95 horsepower. To have a worse p/w ratio it'd have to weigh over 247 kilograms, and I'm not even counting the 80 kg of rider
>>
>>15992843
Again
Shivvy is roughly 220 real kg when fully fueled

The frame and swingarm are surprisingly thicc, it has a big tank and is ultimately derived from Aprilia's pigfat tourer frame

T.shivvy
>>

Anything under a liter and less than 200hp is a beginner bike. No use quibbling. The objective of owning baiku is speed everywhere. Sell everything else you own for horsepower. Otherwise all of /dbt/ will know you crave cocks. Stock bikes are a joke too. You should at least have full retail baiku cost invested in speed parts to impress strangers on teh internet.

Hand on heart, I'm enjoying my 250 more than my 650 but part of it is the juxtaposition of the uberlight 250 that you need to wrangle like fuck to get anything out of it, and the 650 which is laidback and fast from 2500 rpm onwards

So here's my plan

Start with a 180cc scooter, that for some reason is registered as a 125 (huehue) and get back into riding

next year (or the year after depending on things) take a vietnam trip and get a 125cc Vietnamese honda Win clone

This way i'll be very used to riding and will only have to learn gear changing instead of both at the same time, also Korea is much more scooter friendly than motorcycle friendly. some people actively sabotage motorcycles here but leave scooters alone

After the trip i either stay in Nam teaching for another 6-12 months, and keep teaching in asia with low powered bikes, or try moving back to a real country like Australia and trying to get a real job and get a 400 or up to a 600.

or just keep getting bigger and bigger scooters to annoy people here and crash any /dbt/ meetups on a Suzuki Burgman 650...

AVAILABLE power

You're not going to hit 150mph right away on a fucking 600. It's more like driving a decent car than anything. How many people start on 325HP normiemobiles yet manage to stay under the speed limit? Fucking crossovers have more power than the vast majority of "beginner bikes".

Limiting people to bikes that are barely faster than shitty cars is something thought up by bureaucrats that haven't ridden a lot of bikes. You can and should start on a 600, or a 500 at least (as long as it's not a 500 neutered by LAMS).

>muh newbie throttle control
will get you killed on literally anything that isn't a 50cc scooter the moment you make a poorly executed u-turn. 600 = only starter bike.

If you don't have the self control to stay low in the rev range and pace yourself you were going to die regardless, taking your ninja 250 around a sharp turn at 80mph

>>
>>15994088
It's not fork seals that need to be serviced, it's the fork oil and fork springs. It's usually a good idea to change the fork seals when you do those but it's absolutely not necessary if they aren't leaking (which is how you know you need to change them).

And in fact, most fork seals don't even need replacing when they are leaking. The rubber just gets deformed temporarily and needs to be put back in place using a slim little pick that you shove up in there.

No it just really didn't want to push off the rim. Usually I get a couple spoons under it then I can just push it off but I think the softer compound on this particular tire made it more difficult than it typically is. It was also a bitch to get the spoons under the bead so I assume it's just an issue with the compound.

This depends on how coordinated you are. Are you clumsy? Are you at all athletic? If I threw something at you and you weren't expecting it, would you catch it?

If you want to actually learn how to ride a motorcycle, don't buy anything without a manual transmission. CVTs are truly awful.

If you're nervous about not being able to handle a 250, take a safety course. A lot of states actually require them. If you don't know what you're doing, and you don't, the MSF is a fantastic place to start. Watching youtube videos does nothing for you.

Just please, god, do not buy a scooter.

Unrelated, but anyone remember the guy who spent like 300 posts trying to convince /dbt/ that a tuktuk was a really good idea?
>they're remarkably unstable and unsafe
>that's alright, I'll put a roll cage in it!

Yes. You are being trolled, but this is /b/ (all 4chan is /b/) so you came here for that.

Read the fucking title and inspect the VIN on the motorcycle (I bring a bright flashlight since some are obstructed by wires or cables) to ensure they match. Title must be clear with no open liens. If not sure, do yourself a favor and physically visit DMV to look at examples.

Many are the noobz who get assraped because they failed to learn how titles work. No clear title? Walk away.

You can ask DMV to run a VIN, or in some areas the Sheriff's dept does that, but if the title is clear you are good to go unless some knobster stole the title too, as in domestic bullshit. If the title is correct I don't run numbers and I've been buying used bikes since the late 1970s with zero problems so far.

WARNING. IMMEDIATELY transfer the fucking title to your name. Get a hard copy printed on the fucking spot, not mailed to you. Titles can and do go missing in the system. A hard copy lets you reestablish title easily. Take care of your documents. If paranoid or just thorough, you can scan them too in case your house burns down or a psycho gf destroys your stuff. Be thorough, rest easy.

>before buying I'll find a good mechanic in this town

Become one. It used to be a mandatory part of being a biker and is still well worth doing. It's fun, and you have the internet at your fingertips for info and parts. The absurd amounts of money wrenching saves you can be happily squandered on more toys while you gain knowledge and control of your machine.

I know many mechanics who are too old to ride much or at all, but still happily spinning wrenches in their 70s and 80s. It's addictive.

>Fucking A just when I thought I was getting the hang of it

Even when you've done tires for many years, some tire and rim combos are miserable to deal with. My former Honda dealer mechbro still brings in his VTX 1800 rear wheel to the shop for tire changes and even the shop hates them.

Tire soap (or dish detergent and water) helps considerably. Small spoons often work better than large tire irons.

Large HEAVY C-clamps with wood padding on the rim side can break some nasty beads if you don't have a bead breaker.

If you can find a used Coats manual motorcycle tire machine they work well. I scored mine for 150 bucks and it payed for itself quickly.

I would suspect a short or intermittent connection rather than a surge, but use a voltmeter to perform a charging system test. Fuses are shit and most can be replaced with circuit breakers, either the blade style or the boxy but excellent Harley style. Odd that HD are still ahead electrically by using breakers, but they work very well.

Good luck. Intermittent electrical shit could piss off Buddha.

Hey guys,
I know you all personally have a list of bikes that would make good beginner bikes or atleast opinions on the matter.

Instead of having 250/gs500/sv650/literpeter/dualsport wars wouldn't it make more sense just decide on a decent power to weight ratio (loaded down) and use that as a basis of recommendation based on a newbie's stature, weight, and build?
>>
>>15994899
We have decided, the ninja 250 and SV ARE great bikes regardless of a noob's stature, weight, and build. Unless you're a manlet
>>
>>15994899
no. We don't calculate what bike is gud. Everybody has their own preferences and will just choose what they like.
>>
>>15994899
The GS500 is objectively the best beginner bike.
> mileage
It's a mid-sized 4stroke twin cylinder bike, so it drinks less than 6 liters per 100 km.
> handling
It handles nothing like a supersport, spoiling you for when you get something else. But it can also corner much better than something like a cruiser, and actually uses its entire rear tire unlike a Ninja 250.
> brakes
They are complete shit and their only redeeming feature is that they're disc brakes. This is good because the longer braking distance forces new riders to plan ahead and start braking early. No ABS means they learn to brake properly I'd they don't want to get shrekt.
> power
It sits right at the power limit for A2 bikes which is great for euros. It's torquey enough to be faster off the line than most cars you'll encounter in the city. But it also feels relatively gutless so a) it's forgiving of mistakes and b) you can ride it at the limit without putting yourself into too much danger. It reaches up to 180 km/h which is fast enough for highway riding.
> carbs
It being carbed means that if you run into problems, you can learn to fix them yourself instead of heading to the mechanic every time.
> seating position
Upright, slightly forward means it's a neutral riding position so you can figure out what you want afterwards. The seat is relatively uncomfortable making literally every other bike after it will feel like heaven on your ass.
> price and availability
Parts and the bikes themselves are cheap and plentiful. If you crash and fuck up one of your fairings it's 40 euros to replace it with original parts. Engine needs little maintenance. Beginner riders are typically not financially independent, so this is a big plus for them.
> suspension
It's a budget suspension factoring into the overall low cost of getting a GS 500. If you want better suspension it's easy to swap. Therefore it gives beginners an opportunity to learn working on suspension while keeping the cost manageable.
>>
>>15994894
Superstock races allow DOT tires only; GPA Pro and Supercorsa SC2 rule the class with the occasional Power Cup Evo or R10. in the afternoon are Superbike races, which have liberal rules (anything goes if its a production bike) and end up being the same people on the same bikes, usually with the same tires. i cant speak for the other brands, but my DOT is just the KR451 AMA slick with some sipes molded in. zero difference in performance or life.

>>
>>15994899
if you aren't a heavily obese piece of shit any of these bikes will haul your ass. If you are a fat piece of shit don't worry, thanks to americans harley invented bikes specifically for fat people that make low power but high torkkz. They can carry your 400lbs ass of burgers and chicken wings down the road

I'm a second-year rider on an R3, started out on a Ninja 250. For any anons unfamiliar with the inside-baseball, the Ninja 250 is ranked somewhere in the 3-5 range of best bike, while the R3 and GS500 duke it out over the 1 and 2 slots.

I was always impressed by the performance of the Ninja 250, but it just isn't in the same league as my R3. The drop-off in engine performance when you leave the 250cc class is pretty steep, and it must be even steeper when you look at sub-250cc bikes. I mean this in the least arrogant way possible.

The consensus on /dbt/ is that most of the value-added comes from the additional low-end torque. I can't speak to the quality of other bikes, but the dominance of the R3 self-perpetuates pretty easily. Knowing that I'm riding the best performing bike for its class is a comforting thought.

/dbt/ has proven they will crash everything no matter what (how many R3s have crashed recently? and we've had 3 people in one week blow corners, go wide and hit the guardrail).

So from now on we'll just ask prospective /dbt/ riders how much they wanna die and just recommend them from ninja 250 to a 1000 based on that.

They're gonna crash anyway.

Because hydraulic lifters aren't great at high RPM. A Blast is basically half a Sportster engine.

Most Jap street bikes require little attention to the valve trains. Harleys don't either but they aren't designed for racing.
