moped anon here from the previous thread-
https://a.pomf.cat/ncmjzi.webm

Figured out my issue, the plug was just fouled. Swapped in a new one and it starts fine now.

Got another question for y'all- do 2 strokes just not like to idle or am I tuning it in incorrectly? My plug is practically white at idle now, running pretty lean, and I still can't get it to idle reliably below 2500 rpm. I guess I can try dropping another idle jet size but it's already lean enough where if I lean out the mixture screw any more it dies at idle. Should I just say fuck it and idle around 2000-2500? It's an automatic 1 speed and the clutch only grabs at around 4000-5000 rpm so it wouldn't be wearing it out at 2500, just eating a fuck ton of gasoline.

I'd rather get it down to idle normally though but from what I'm reading online a lot of people don't really tune their 2 strokes to idle for more than 20-30 seconds?
>>
>>15900179
>stock pipes are way too quiet
all of em are. after removing the catalytic converter and baffle, you can get some insane sound. v4s kind of trade the "screamer" sound for a more low frequency growling. it sounds more like an old ford instead of a bike.

>>>/wsg/1321264
>>
>>15900273
it could be a ton of reasons (not enough intake, maybe the filter is fouled too, too much oil..) but its important to NOT run too lean at idle, you run the risk of heating the engine up when it shouldnt be heating up. you might be too lean.

reset your carb: put the mixture screw back in the default position and look your carb up on treats to see what the idle jet is normally.

i am thinking, because you only idle at a higher rpm, that your needle is in a good position and size, so you want the idle jet to sort of emulate what the needle is like. go richer

P.S., stock e50? i went all out on my response, but to answer your original question, 2 strokes DO like to idle, and ~2.5k is about the right range. i was presuming you had modded shit, in which case it would be closer to ~5k.

2 strokes just don't like to idle, idle too long, oil builds up inside the engine, fouls the spark plug.
what ratio are you running your fuel at?
Are you running your fuel mixture at 40:1 maybe?
that would do it, 50:1 is plenty enough for that engine
Could be the reed valves if not your fuel mixture, any damage to the reeds and it will not run right either
>>
>>15900293
I don't have a filter it's literally just a metal mesh. Where I live the weather's nice and there's no dust, I ran my last build with just a mesh filter too and it was 100% a-ok.

The idle jet is normally a 45, I'm at a 40 right now. 45 was way too rich, it was fouling the plug and 4 stroking like crazy. 42 was a bit better but it would still 4 stroke when I opened the throttle 1/8th. 40 it doesn't 4 stroke anymore but it's still idling a bit high. If I unscrew the mixture all the way out (get it richer) then it starts sputtering a tiny bit from richness so I know I'm almost just perfect for the mixture.

If I go back up to 42 or 45 it'll be too rich. And yeah I played around with different needles / needle settings until I got one that made my mid-rev range super crisp (you can hear it in the webm). My main jet might be too rich tho but I'll have to see.

>and since i was 4 so 19 years

That's fucking amazing. Those are fantastic photos. I just started in June. Hopefully one day I'll have the balls to get air like that.
>>
>>15900310
Nope, not stock. It's a 62 cc cylinder that I converted from piston port to reed valve timing by dumping the intake straight into the case and dremeling a 3rd boost/transfer port. If 2.5k~ is around the right range then I'll just keep it there. I was trying to get it down to around 1200-1400~ but I guess that probably not going to happen unless I get super anal about tuning it, right?

>>15900321
Yeah my mixture is exactly 40:1 right now. Would I have to adjust jetting at all when I fill it up with 50:1 next time seeing as it'll be slightly richer or will it just be minor playing around with the mixture / idle speed screws?

I'm not sure it's the reeds because (and correct me if I'm wrong please I don't know shit about 2 strokes) it's pulling really nicely from 3000-9000 rpm. I hit 50 mph pretty fast and can keep up with traffic decently, the reeds definitely made the cylinder way torque-ier.

Also
>>15900321
>2 strokes just don't like to idle, idle too long,
>>15900310
>2 strokes DO like to idle

How come I see this divide everywhere I look online? Seems that no one can agree on whether they do or don't like to idle, there's a lot of threads I'm finding where people seem to get really heated over this.

I guess I'll just keep it at 2000-2500 rpm for now and see what it feels like with 50:1 when I empty the tank.

Thanks guys!

Depends on who you talk to, i only really know high performance 2 smoke engines, i run my 300 at 32:1 so if it idles for 5 minutes it will foul the spark plug, gotta keep revving it.

talk to other scooter owners and they will probably tell you they can idle no worries, which is where that fuel mixture comes in, the oil in the fuel does not actually burn, all it is doing is lubricating the engine and considering that your engine is not exactly high performance 50:1 will be fine for it.
>>
>>15900368
what part did he fail? written or riding portion? I did pretty bad on the written portion (still passed though) but the riding one seemed pretty easy. Maybe our instructors were just pretty lenient, there was somebody that even dropped their bike and they still passed.

>>15900376
Yeah
> high performance 2 smoke engines
that would make sense. When I was reading all that shit I was thinking there's no way people ride scooters and mopeds around fouling plugs at every stop light, especially since most people I know who have scooters are normies who don't do their own maintenance. I feel like if that were the case they'd all foul their plug once and then just sell the scooter.

I think I might of fucked up.

I ran my DRZ without oil. I topped it up a liter (need to go buy more) and it still doesn't show on the dip stick.

Bike doesn't seem any worse, and the engine light never came on, so should I be worried about having damaged anything ?

>>15900387
The riding portion. How he described it, he was going too slow.

Also the instructor was a massive cunt and wouldn't let anyone try anything again. I hope he highsides his harley and becomes a quadrapalegic so he has to suffer.
>>
>>15900390
you have a bit of a seal leak inside your engine m8, she blowing blue smoke?
>>
so my friend destroyed his engine case on his SV1000 for using a shitty chain, he is currently riding a z125 but he wants to fix it.
he found some SV1000 engine cases for around 150 freedom units.
how much of a pain in the ass is it gonna be to do this project?
>>
>>15900396
>lso the instructor was a massive cunt and wouldn't let anyone try anything again.

Wow what the fuck. Ours let some people try up to 3x on certain portions of the riding test. He just got really unlucky with the instructors then, I bet if he goes back to retake it elsewhere things will probably go better.
>>
>>15900387
I always assumed those normies would look up 2 smoke fuel ratios and run their scoots at 28/1 thinking it would make it more powerful
>>
>>15900401
No, I'm not worried about leaking or burning oil. I just went too long without changing or topping it up.

I know the oil keeps the engine from getting too hot, so is it safe to assume if the engine light never came on, that it didn't get hot enough to do any damage ?
>>
>>15900396
was that during the actual test?
when i got my license they had us riding around practicing the course for about 4 hours before doing the test.
There was a tank driving around in the field beside us too, good day.
>>
>>15900411
Nah your radiator does that, the oil lubricates everything inside your engine, here is a fun task for ya, take the head off your engine, start it and watch how fast that shit moves so you can sink it in ya thick skull that it needs to be lubricated all the time.

that shits spinning at thousands of RPM.

and if all your oil disappeared, it went through the engine, most likely that one of the main seals is leaking (the ones that seal the crank case)

if you leave it, you will end up destroying the engine, take it or leave it there is my two cents.

In germoney you ride around on public street 3-4 times and have 2-4 hours for slalom and shit.
All in all like 4-6 lesson units on 4-6 different days. This can take 2-4 weeks.

Good thing about this you're used to public road and get corrected immediately if you do something wrong on public street while in claptistan you have retards that are afraid to ride out of their garage because they have zero experience.
>>
>>15900480
Are you kidding me? No.
Here you have to do some tests like braking and cones.
Then they make you ride on the road giving you directions and judge how you ride.
>>
>>15900506
>in claptistan you have retards that are afraid to ride out of their garage because they have zero experience.

Because freedom. If I already grew up riding dirt bikes around my ranch why should I have to take a 2 week course like everyone else?
>>
>>15900514

also if you're really good at riding you don't need to take 10 lessons, you just do one and you're done. In burgerland your instruction is just shitty, all the retard crashes come from merica or russia

one more 2 stroke question-

can reed valve "flutter" cause bogging at WOT? My main jet was a bit rich at WOT so I downjetted, and now it still seems to be a bit rich but when I'm taking off from a low speed and open it up to WOT it "bogs" as if its lean (feels sort of like it's about to seize) but the head temp remains super low and it corrects itself pretty fast. Once I'm at WOT for a while it stops doing that.

My guess is that I'm either A: lugging the bike because it's a one speed and I'm opening the throttle too fast or B: the reed valves are fluttering at high RPM and can't keep up with the fuel intake for a second causing a few sudden "bogs" where it's gasping for more gas?

Maybe this will right itself when I switch to 50:1 premix like another anon here suggested, who knows. Going to let it cool off and try to start it again before I jinx myself (knock on wood) but I think I got the idle + start down pretty well so far. Just need to fix up the top end again.

Just fixed my clapped out 73 TS250, and all I did was cut out the connectors to the cdi and replaced with some new wire.

Then I didn't wire up a kill switch, so when I was worried as fuck the thing was going to explode with no exhaust on it at 4 in the morning (setting off dozens of car alarms) I then pulled off the spark plug boot and the spark was so powerful the thing arced like 3 fucking feet and shocked me in like 30 places

Nice purple spark tho

Hello new to /o/ so please be nice.
What is a good starter bike?
Something that can be worked on by an amateur.
Also: what is the average price for a starter motorcycle?

Whatever's in your price range. They have bulletproof engines and are easy to wrench on. Look for one that hasn't been abused too much and you're golden.

Nope, just general road quality in my area. Makes it very hard to get a knee down.

The roads would look a lot worse but webm converter kinda shits out on quality.

get leather where you can, don't waste money on non calf length boots, full sized gauntlets aren't any less comfortable than smaller gloves, go to a store and try your helmet on, don't just buy it off the internet (and no social anxiety is not an excuse you fucking spastic.) and most importantly

>have fun!
>>
>>15901746

Depends how much you are willing to spend, look up Kawasaki KLR 650, Versys, ER6, Suzuki SV650, Vstrom 650, DR650. The KLR and DR650 will go offroad easily, the rest not so much. Lurk more...
>>
>>15901762
oh one more thing.

helmets "bed", so if you try one in the store and feel like it's squeezing you a bit around the cheeks and such that's perfect, after a week or so the helmet will "bed" in and it will fit you perfectly. I've made the mistake of getting a helmet one size too big before and after it bedded it practically rattled around on my head.

DON'T buy one that is too tight or doesn't fit around the crown of your head though.
>>
Aww fuck. I just got a bike I was working on back running, and all the lights worked and it's road legal, so I took it around the yard and decided to go up the hill past my house. Rear tire blew like three driveways up. FUCK that hurt. Not much road rash, but goddamn, crashing my dirtbikes never felt that bad.
>>
>>15901780

This threw me off so much with my first helmet. The thing was squeezing my cheeks and I thought I'd fucked up and was going to exchange it but after a couple weeks it fit like a glove.
>>
>>15900027
Don't. They just released the new engine so all prices of every bike will bottom out soon. Plus $4500 is too much for a sporty. More like $35-3800

I'm getting a Raptor petcock for my DS soon, that vacuum shit doesn't belong.
Just have to make it a habit to turn it off. But it's cool flipping switches and shit so people think I'm all mechanically inclined.

Old dryrotted tires. I'll go look at it later when I feel like walking. Ankle is a little swollen and hurts to put weight on it, but doesn't seem too serious.
