Hi /dbt/
After 5 years on jap' motorbike, I'm thinking to buy a Sportster 883 as my first american bike
I can have it for a few bucks, but it has 70,000 miles on it.
Is it a lot for an Harley ? I know pretty nothing on these bikes

In this shithole everything is reduced to its lowest common denominator for optimum shitposting and not much else. You post a troll post to receive answers that you dont care about (only to sit back and watch man children respond with bullshit heresay), and whenever someone inevitably does show up to explain their personal taste or preference, the true colors of the echochamber mentality show up.

In that reguard, this place is basically the anti reddit. Its the other side of the exact same coin, doing the same type of shit. And the quality/simplicity of replies to this post will likely highlight my point.

Copped the telemetry data from the fastest novice on a 600 in Texas to try and learn why I'm so slow. Overlaid it on my graph.

First, the good. It's a dead heat as far as lateral acceleration is concerned, so I'm not losing anything important in the corners. Peak G force is almost the same, sometimes mine is earlier or later but not by much

>I've seen people having discussions about the XT350 engine already being way too big to be fitted

Funny that you mention that, whilst the XT350 motor won't go into a TW, i'm currently gearing up to stick the front and back end from a TW onto an XT350, should be about the perfect size/weight/power.

Failing that i'll just go with an XT600 like in that vid and wheelie myself to death.

The biggest problem with sticking any other engine in a TW frame is the fucking huge final drive offset you need, the TW engine runs a special final drive shaft with an exterior bearing to compensate for the fuck huge back wheel.....but if you move the rear sprocket in a little closer to the wheel, most large engines have enough of an offset to make it work.

Yes, as long as I don't actively dislike them. Share the fun, man!

Also, standard etiquette here would be to give you corider plenty of gear. Ethically speaking, if you don't have the extra gear, you should give your own to them, and ride without.

If it uses sealed beams the entire headlight unit has to be replaced, which is usually upwards of $150 for one light. It's not really worth the cash if you're just gonna turn around and sell it.

Go test ride it during the day to see if everything else is fine and if it is, go ahead and do it m8.

The first is unethical. Anyways, I've always made sure the two of us have enough gear, but ethically, the rider should always give way for the uneducated by rider who can't really influence his own fate.

Why the fuck do manufacturers keep cutting back on the components/costs used in newer model bikes?

Everything can be fixed, it's just a matter of it being economically viable or not.

If we're talking about Jap stuff you can still walk into a dealership and buy OEM 60's/70's stuff, it's pretty rad.

Cylinders you absolutely can (I have recently), and any auto electrican can rebuild a stator no problems, there's also a few places that do upgraded stators for older bikes which is nice.

No. To get an old bike back into good condition you will need to replace/rebuild pretty much every part

Mmmm, I'll look into it. It's too early for me to think about a second bike, but I doubt I'd have the funds for any modern naked/sport. I'm riding a dual sport 90% street so I know I want something smoother on the road, a bit faster, and can hold higher speeds more comfortably but still have some pull. I wouldn't want a huge heavy cruiser, but I love the style/sound/character of classic bobbed(?) cruisers and hot rods. The kind of shit that the average mechanic joes built in the 40's/50's and raced with their buddies. Wish I could have experienced that.

Grooves are there to funnel water away when it rains, that's it. They don't do anything beyond reduce grip aside from that.

So what do you think?

Yes I understand that. I never said anything about grip, it's tire longevity I'm worried about. I'm no scientist, I don't know the exact properties of mud or the prolonged effects of leaving mud in the grooves. Like I said originally I pretty sure I'm being paranoid, I just want to be super safe.

What's with harley and having hardtails out when everyone else had actual suspensions
>>
>>15896624
Fucking headlights. Low beams light up a few feet in front of me, and high beams fan out to god knows where. I'm too lazy to remove the fairings to see why the adjustment knob doesn't work.
>>
>>15895084
Take a riding course. Even if you know how to operate one it doesn't mean you can do it in traffic.
>>
>>15896466
There fun cause you can show your ass off going fast.
>>
>>15896636
That's a late 30's, maybe early 40's bike. Also the suspension was in the seat.

Riding courses help more with low-speed stuff if you're so shit you can't even do a no-touch U-turn without tipping over or running into something
>>
Find a Sony action cam

Similar form factor, but even old/original ones are better quality. AS15/AS20's should be dirt cheap around now

To me, you either love it or you don't. If you can't picture yourself really riding then don't bother

This.

I wanted to ride my whole life, my dream from when I was a child was to get my knee down.

It was never an option not to ride for me, whenever people ask me if they should get a bike or not I usually tell them if they don't know already something's wrong.
>>
>>15897110
Get a bike and ride then and stop thinking about crashing. Especially dont think about it while you are riding
>>
>>15897148
I already do have a bike. I'm not the first anon.

I am the "first" anon, trust me when I say I'm extremely interested and really want to. I'm leaning towards yes now, just at this point it's a bit redundant to respond to everybody but I really appreciate the sincere, mostly not-dickhead responses from you all.
>>
>>15897173
Also thinking about, my main concern is I don't want to really fuck myself up or get killed at least while my parents are alive

Oh woops, I thought you were talking about the harley davidson drag racing series. Jewtube blocked the vid, so I didn't notice the source.

That's just a video of a TV series made because americans think harleys are cute old man machines, like low rider caddies and horses. Other manufacturers make their money off results, not nostalgia and image. Fucking ducati wouldn't get a TV series.

What ear plugs do you guys use?

putting the finishing touches on a 1969 CT90 K2 built one piece at a time using Ebay and a parts bike I bought from a guy for next to nothing. I've put $1200 in it so far and the only reason I'm not on it now is fixing a stripped drainplug and a sheared shift drum pin causing it to hang on either side of second gear. And it started as a frame from Ebay. Old motorcycles can be p. fuckin cheap

how is that cheap? you can literaly buy one of those shitty old bikes for $300-600 in runing condition. Also they still make parts for those because the chinks love those little bikes.
>>
>>15897550
Then it should be fine, but don't come crying when the first $1000 service bill comes in as BMW are expensive as hell to service whit all the electrical stuff

Because there weren't any within 400 miles of me, running condition or no and I really, really wanted one. One night I caved and bought a frame off ebay and decided to build it. lucked out about a week into it when I found a guy with one three hours away. I'm going full autismo with restoring it, OEM everything with the exception of the ignition coil which is actually an aftermarket coil from the late 60's. From my experience those chink parts are really shit, I bought a set of points that were just out of spec enough to make timing and gapping them "possible" but not precise. Spent twice the money on a whole assembly from Honda and I got it gapped perfectly and timed within a degree of the indicated mark on the flywheel.
