I had a feeling a Ninjette would be sportier, but this was substantially cheaper and supposedly faster. I guess I got what I wanted at the time. It felt like a lot after going from all sub-200cc bikes to this, but only for a few weeks.

I realize, I just don't have the funds to do anything but a lateral move right now, or to get a sport bike that is in worse condition.

I love it for running up my local mountain and am just not at a skill level where I'm wanting for power in the twisties yet. It also excels in urban/suburban riding.

Where it's mostly lacking is the highway. I live in a state with a shitload of endless expanse and 75 mph zones. It's fine for cruising around 70-75, but the lack of power and short gears make it hardly confidence inspiring riding in traffic where the slowest cars are doing 80+. The high altitude doesn't help. Also the wind pushing my head around starts to suck after a couple hours and this state is particularly windy.

Also what should I expect from a '84 XT600 that's hard to start cold? More trouble than it's worth or could it be a reliable first bike? I know to stay away from 80's road bikes.

Changing oil in my bike, overfilled a little, tried to use a windex style sprayer to pull a bit of oil out. Lets say a half droplet of water clinging to the inside of the tube found its way back down into the oil somehow, that wouldn't be a problem would it? Pretty sure that didn't happen but I'm all paranoid now.

I took my MSF course on a tu250, it's the only tu250 I've ridden but my main gripes were an extremely loose throttle that made rolling off a jerky experience, a long shifter throw that kept me hitting neutral instead of second, vibrations like a mf, pretty unintuitive turning, friction zone shifting position over the course of longer rides, and general size. I'm 6' and the bike was just uncomfortable, I would often ride with my foot below the rear brake just cus of my knee angle. All these complaints are in comparison to the gixer I ride now so take it with salt.

I took mine on a GZ250, which I'm fairly sure is the same engine. Can verify. Rode half the course with my right foot under the brake lever because I thought it was supposed to do that. Once you get it into second gear, it mostly stops jerking you around.

As 250's go, the Rebel is probably kinder to the beginner if the cruiser thing strokes your fancy. If I could go back and do it again, I'd buy an R3. Nothing but love for my CBR, but I wish it was just a little faster.
