>delivering to lowes in Vegas
He has a load that mjst be delivered to a Lowes location in Las Vegas
>rush hour appt.
The delivery appointment is during rush hour
>get messed about for 2 hours looking for an Mt
2 hours of his day were wasted trying to locate an empty trailer with which to get loaded
>sends pre plan can't stop and check it or I'll be late and out of time
Dispatcher sent a message to the computer in the truck with information for the next load, this requires an acknowledgement. Note that the computer cannot be used while the vehicle is in motion, and he has no time to stop and look at it.
>new plan sent demands to know if I can do it on time
Since the dispatcher is a drooling retard, he took the lack of response to mean "fuck you" instead of "i do not have time to look at this", and sent additiobal messages demanding a response
>Since I can't see the plan have to use down syndrome voice to hear it.
He opted to use the computer's text to speech function to try to decipher the message while still moving. Note that this sounds like a drunk deaf person, and tends to completely mangle words even when they aren't mispelled by the braindead chimpanzee who sent the message.
>can't make sense of it get stoplight punch in a quick no, cause I have no idea what he wants
Briefly stopped at a red light, he manages a negative response to this asshattery.
>now I have to navigate vegas lunch hour traffic 3 lowes delivery trucks and apparently drunk homeless people while getting yelled at for saying no
The shaved ape in dispatch is chimping out at him over the negative response while he tries not to give anybody their darwin award.
>Why am I still here again?
He questions the life choices that led him to this point.

Thank you sir, you made my day. That is a 100% accurate explanation to my frustrated ramblings have some trucker art I found in april
Also after all the idiocy the next run is only 250 miles and I have to do it in two days. And the bold print states do not call for earlier appointments.
>>
>>15029924
Better question. Why are you leaving our lights, doors and systems on long enough to drain the battery enough to kick on the apu? Also I do try and shut it off,i mean really it's a little toggle switch.. it's just you guys scream bloody murder if I try to walk back to the truck for anything these days..
>>
>>15029991
If your batteries weren't complete shit your voltage wouldn't drop down to 9v from just sitting for a few days.

It never fucking fails to have to jump a truck off after doing an in frame. I don't even open the door on the cab so what the fuck are you even talking about? Do you have any idea how much I fucking loathe getting in the cab behind your nasty asses?

First of all I'm already fucking greasy from just opening the hood because you simply refuse to wash your engine at all. Right off the fucking bat that makes me avoid the interior of the truck at all costs, but do you have any idea how fucking disruptive an APU is just fucking spitting and sputtering all day while I'm trying to torque down your main bearings? Just have a little courtesy and turn the motherfucker off before you catch a ride from the hotel.
>>
>>15029991
Also I'm pretty sure I worked on a serial killer's truck last month. Dude had literally 50+ elmo dolls, pillows, figurines, etc. in his mack.
>>
so I'm not a trucker but I want to be.
and rather than be the retard asking questions, I have stories of other retards.
starting with my favorite
>going to phx from abq, good little trip, not bad
>stop at the pilot around williams
>navajo trucks everywhere
>dear god why
>pull my pickup up into the car lot because I know my role and I'm gonna go shit, but first, truck watching
>t680 navajo rig parked in the island, dumbshit parked and went inside
>like 4 trucks stacked behind this retard
>i witness the best thing ever
>presumably o/o in shitty century puts it in grandma low and then hops out and pulls the hoses from the pumps out of navajo truck
>watch this century fucking shove this shitty empty t680 out of the island by force
>go in and get my shit
>laugh for about 10 miles about it
>>
>>15030082
Ah I see now. I actually don't leave while it's being worked on if I was to go check in at a hotel I most certainly would have, along wit attaching the "air cuff safety system" per dispatches request.
Also most of the time I bring it in is cause I'd like new batteries also I have a wooly blanket I place over the drivers seat to ensure you are at least somewhat protected from my filth while it's in your care
>>15030117
This is important. What KIND of figurines? I know a guy who drives something close to that only when I see him he's usually in full drag
>>
>getting on the highway behind truck
>accelerate and pass
>get safe distance ahead of him
>merge back into right lane
>he flashes his lights at me once

Was he trying to say something nice or tell me that I'm a dick? I was plenty far ahead of him when I merged. I know it's a good thing if I were to flash my lights at a truck to tell them it's okay to move over, but I've never had one flash me after I pass him.
>>

Today was a bad day. I got terminated from my company.

list of wrongs:
>2 high value load violations by not driving the first 200 miles
the first was because I was tired and started swerving so I called about whether to stop or continue, they advised to stop but I never got a confirmation number or the person's name for that so it was all on me. The second time I had an airline fall off so Im not sure if they really expected me to keep driving like that, but again on me
>leaving my load unattended in a high theft area
I had turned the truck off because I was two days early so no messages were going to my qualcomm then when they called me over the phone I happened to be away from the truck--getting groceries
>my logs got audited
the last few months were really slow so for a few days I didnt bother to log a pretrip
>had one preventable accident
I wrote a post about this in one of the last threads, I was going up a hill in stop and go traffic and the flatbed in front of me rolled backwards and hit me. There was no highway patrol so we just swapped info then parted ways but he ended up telling a different story than what happened so it was his word against mine with no evidence.

Have you guys ever heard anything like this? I guess it was mostly negligence/naivety on my part. It seems like if I had known what to say I couldve found a way around a lot this stuff.

I was a neet before this, Im not sure what to do now. I fell for the swift meme, I was their slave for about 10 months. How difficult will it be to reapply to other companies with this on my record? At this point should I just kill myself?

I am a neet about to get into trucking. Looking at what you did it looks like I can prevent some mistakes you made;
>always log a pretrip
>don't stop too close to truck in front of you on a hill (no dashcam?)
>don't say I'm away from the truck

Not sure about being tired though. Did you not have time to sleep?

If it's any consolation, you probably would have gotten hit with a preventable any ways for being close enough for the flatbed to roll back into you.

You aren't done trucking though if you don't want to be. I'm sure there are companies that will hire you even though they might not be great options to work for. But if you keep your nose clean at a new company, you may someday work for a company above slave tier

Moving your vehicle before paying for your fuel is a crime. It doesn't matter if there's ten vehicles behind you.

I assume that means less than a trailer length. Either way that's a little close, he wasn't saying thanks for leaving a responsible amount of space. Did you at least signal?

I wonder when I will finally get fired.
>meeting at 5am
>show up at 6am
I haven't gone to a meeting in like a year. Fuck those things. Complete waste of time and they always say the exact same shit. And today was salesmen and drivers and they just bitch and moan about eachother the whole time. Salesmen is lazy fucks a lot of the time.

>30 cases coming into a stop
>can only fit 29 cases on the two handtrucks
>not trying to take another trip
>29 case delivery
>>
>>15033182
I was awake for a while waiting for an assignment so when I accepted that load it was very late in the day. Id say if you have any doubt of not being able to complete the load to just refuse it or make sure you get a number/name from your dispatch if they say its alright to stop

As for that preventable accident, what Id do differently is to call a highway patrol officer and make sure everyone agrees on what happened so it wouldnt turn into a he said she said type of ordeal. I had a drive cam installed afterward, really wish I had one at the time..

>>15032923
>>15033611
I guess a bit of an update here--I tried to ask for some sort of release papers from swift on what they tell my future employers but no real, clear answer besides they confirm the dates of which I worked with them, and besides itd be a third party that deals with that. Mostly I wanted to know if I could get away with just saying I resigned with them voluntarily. There's nothing on my dmv record apparently so it was all on their records. My csa score is still about 20pts and thatll only go away over time

I called up a few companies telling them I was a terminated ex-swifter with 10months exp but most didnt sound hopeful. Then I decided to say I quit on my own accord and werner and jb hunt were already trying to set me up for an orientation with them, it was kinda funny. I wouldnt want to work for another mega company but Ill take it if thats all I can get. I enjoyed trucking for the most part, it was my first job I hate I could screw even that up

also I requested a dac report because I wanted to see what mine exactly says. Has anyone ever used any of these sites; hireright, cccverify, driverfacts?

>>15033471
I know :^(
if there's any sort of silver lining to my situation it's a good learning experience
>>
>>15035053
I guess legally, when (if) a potential employer contacts a previous employer, they can't say anything besides employment dates.

Accidents, they will know so you have to report that. Most companies ask about formal discipline and shit like that on applications but I doubt they could ever find out if you lied.
>>
>>15030264
I can't remember. Dude drives for Carroll fulmer.
>>
>>15035101
Personally speaking, when a potential employer asks about my mistakes, I'd ask them which ones they want to know about, and just explain it openly. I haven't killed anyone, I learn from my mistakes, they shouldn't be worried about those mistakes because I'm determined not to make those mistakes again.

How feasible would it be to buy my uncle's old Frieghtshaker and run O/O for a company? I want to progress in this industry.
>>
>>15036267
It'd be a feat, Whiney. You'd need several grand just to operate for the first quarter, as TF has said. I think you could do it, but you'd have to seriously step up and stay on top of paperwork, receipts, truck care, etc.
>>
>>15036280
>You'd need several grand just to operate for the first quarter
Why
>>
>>15036302
Shit breaks. See subtitle of thread
>>
>>15036302
Well I suppose I'd be mistaken if he goes O/O for a company. However if he went O/O solo with his own trailer, some companies don't pay out until some arbitrary time after delivery, like 90 days or every fiscal quarter or some bs. TF could answer better than I.

Wouldn't it largely be the same since it would be with a company? I know I'd have to set up a maintenance account, and factor in fueling but I think I could make it.

Orientation was easy for me, it was mainly paperwork, safety, etc. The mentoring is another monster. My first mentor was an absolute pile of garbage, he was racist, intolerant, unclean, arrogant and generally unpleasant. I ended up having to call my DM to get me out of the truck. The second mentor I had was fantastic, he was clean, friendly, and patient. If you don't like your first mentor don't hesitate to drop him because it will make life hell otherwise. Sleeping while the truck is moving will be another thing you have to get used to.

Orientation is going to be paperwork and the company kool-aid and then as many safety videos and papers they can cram into you in one sitting
Trainer will be Litterally you and another guy in a 6x6 room. For anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 months you will only have enough space for you and probably one dufflebag, that will probably end up doing double duty as your pillow. If the truck is moving and you need to sleep you get to sleep in whatever filth the trainer has on the bottom bunk so bring a sleeping bag. Seriously. You don't want to be doing bed sheets every time you wanna sleep.
If the trainer is good he will try and teach you and give you space. If he isn't prepare for lots of bullshit. If it gets too much you can call driver relations (given at orientation do not loose it) and get moved to another truck. Keep in mind this WILL lengthen your training time and relations is always going to want you to "wait it out"

For my orientation I was flown in on a late flight and got to the room at about 0200 after a further 1.5 hour drive to the company HQ town. Then it was catch the shuttle bus at 0530 to the training center. There were about 25 of us and all tired as hell after suffering similar arrival conditions.

First Day, Monday morning: All testing is occurring simultaneously. Some went here, others went there. This was my path. Led off with a body ergonomics evaluation looking for unclaimed injuries. One guy I talked to had a torn rotator cuff found and got the bus home. A woman had severe back issues and also got the bus ticket. They told me I was just stiff and should stretch more (or at all).

Next was physical agility testing. Had to lift 30, 60, and 90lb weights from floor to waist height and then from waist height to shoulder height. Carry 100lbs 100ft, go up 100 stairs. Repeated checks of respiration, BP, and heart rate during this. One guy got bounced for high BP before even doing anything. As an aged couch potato I barely squeaked by on the heart rate. BP actually dropped after the activity but wasn't high in the first place.

Then to the drug test. Typical piss in a cup deal followed by the immediate use of a test strip. Two got up and left when it was announced that there would be testing that day. Three failed the test strip and were immediately escorted from the property and NO bus ticket home. Samples were then sent to a lab and two more got bounced out when lab results came back Wednesday.

Finally the physical. In our case it was a more complete company physical (hernia check included *cough*) that also had the DOT elements included. At least there wasn't a prostate exam. Neck size is important! Too big (they said 17 inches) and you must get a sleep apnea test done and necessary corrective measures taken before you can be sent to the Fleet.
>>
>>15040811
After all that got finished up about Noon it was lunchtime (Subways but we didn't care and wolfed them down) After lunch it was driving tests. Four of us were newbs so we pretty much just went around the block four times and were done in about an hour. Experienced drivers had drives of up to 1.5 hours. The shortest of them was an ex instructor who did that commentary-drive thing and was told he was good to go after about 10 minutes. All during this the Safety department is still vetting candidates who have work history irregularities or problems getting through to prior employers. This continues throughout orientation and if you get through orientation without your work history being verified to their satisfaction you wait in the hotel until it is. Without pay. First day finishes up about 1830.

Tuesday is company paperwork in the morning and various lectures and seminars from the different departments telling you what they do, what's expected of you from them, procedures you won't remember, etc.

Wednesday morning is carry over of what didn't get done on Tuesday with no doubt a little bit of stalling waiting for drug test results from the lab to arrive. Then a chaining demonstration. Orientation was done about 1300 and then it was truck assignments or waiting for mentors if they weren't already there. Bad thing here is the guys that got trucks were immediately assigned loads and were in some cases due to leave right then. That had to suck.

>What could your boss be mad at?
Tires that blow are frequently the result of low pressure conditions causing excess sidewall flex. Needless to say management believes this is 100 percent preventable through pre-trip inspections. In fact management believes everything is preventable and if something happened it's the driver's fault.

Fleet controller here - you have the right idea.

I have no need for drivers that can't use basic logic to sort a problem - they are always the first to go.

Case in point, I recently fired a driver for similar reasons - he arrived at a usual dead drop location and called me to say he can't deliver it because the site wasn't locked up with our padlock.
Now it sounds like a genuine issue, I tell him to take his fatigue break, I start calling all my contacts for that DC, end up calling in a favour and I wake up their state manager... Who then gives me the number for the 24 hour on site security.
>>
>>15042043

>>
>>15042064
How was the driver to know there was on-site security? Unless he actually saw one walking around, or there was a sign with a phone #, that's the sort of thing that should be verified and included on whatever paperwork you use.

Can't can a dude because him AND you were unfamiliar with the procedures of that specific location.
>>
>>15041580
This.
>>
>>15042673
There's a fucking booth, next to the gate.
I knew that there was security there in the past, but I assumed that because he was calling me, asking to futile his load, that there was nobody there.

It was one DC of literally hundreds, and he'd delivered there dozens of times, why he couldn't walk 30 fucking feet to speak to someone is beyond all reasonable explanation.
>>
>>15042746
Alright, well if there is a "Fucking booth" then yes, he was a big dumb idiot who probably has small hands and feet, and deserved to be fired.

im a soon to be 26 year old guy with no kids and am not married. ive worked in the automotive repair field since i was 20. theres not a lot of advancement for me in this industry - im a service manager at a very busy shop but none of the companies in my area (phoenix) pay anything NEAR what they should be, and i work long hours to boot (salary. lol get fucked, basically)

i saw a website just now for a private trucking school in my area. $1500 bucks, 7 day thing. seriously considering saving up some cash real quick and doing it to start a new career where i can

>eventually make lots more money
>obtain different types of licenses, etc to become more specialized and earn even better money

i could give two fucks about how much time im on the road or home. i dropped all my old friends and my ex gf a few years ago, i was very tied up in drugs. i was hooked on meth and selling weed and percocet like it was going out of style. theres nothing for me here.

im sober, bored all the time, not making SHIT for money, and tempted.

what kinds of companies/work should i be expecting to get if i was to go to a private school?

also i read that getting paid CPM (cents per mile) is fucboi scrub shit.

so what kind of pay structure should i REALLY be seeking, and what realistically should i expect?

Thank you for your time, you are helping someone make a big life decision. ive been toying with this choice for almost a year now, but cannot commit to a Swift style program of being their shit-wage slave for a year just to learn to drive/get my CDL.

In logistics, most companies will make you put in your dues , before you can make real money.

The best money is made in hazmat custom critical , and oversized.

But to get those gigs ypu meed a couple of years of reliable driving and on time performance.

If you have no ties , the train/drive programs are fine. Sell your shit and go on the road as much as possible, if you need a place to crash .
>>
>>15032153
Your fault for not doing your logs.

Always have a dash cam. Never trust another trucker to be honest about a ln incident.

In fact, get a digital camera, and take a picture of your trailer and cab every time you check out a cab ( or every start of day), pick up or drop off a trailer. Or something not normal happens.

Take pictures of your equipment that is below standard or that you ask to be repaired. Or of any malfunction.

When you talk to someone. Get their name and confirmation number , always. ( record if legal)

Never turn off for 2 days. Log on daily to check for status updates or call into dispatch.

If you had done a call to dispatch , they wouldnt have called you... So that "not in truck in high theft wouldnt have happened."

Your not done. Lots of turn over in trucking, but your next gig may be less than great. Just reapply to a bunch of places and be honest about why you were fired.

In interview ( if i was interviewing you) i would ask why you were fired, whos fault was it ( it is yours , that is the only correct answer) and what did you learn.

Dont ever cpm.

Always check in on time at lowes. And keep a stopwatch.

Once you check in with the receiving manager ( who is only there m-f 7- 3) they have 2 hours to complete your unload.

If you have a scheduled time and are more than 30 min late. They can charge you with a late delivery, bump you, and take as long as they want to unload you ( everyone else, who was on time goes before you)

Ad a former lowes reciving clerk i woukf recomend you get the name and number of the reciving manager , and if your going to be late to an appointment. Call them and give a heads up.

If a driver gave me a heads up , and it wasnt an every week kind of thing, i would just rearranged and not call in that he was late.
>>
>>15035101
As a manager. Who does hiring of drivers, we know, just by your answers and what you saym in addition it is a small industry . if i want to find out why you were fired , i will find out from a phone call.

If you have an accident or pop on a dot test or fail a medical , that is all easy enough to know from offical records.

If you were termed for harassment ( seems to be one of the top reasons) or fighting, that is easy enough to find out.

If your fired because of on time/ load performance. That may be harder to find out, but I may be able to tease that answer out too. ( and honestly if tou cant deliver on time we will fire you soon enough anayway)

how do I get my drivers to stop tailgating? basically if their following distance is less than 2 seconds for 2 MINUTES or more, I have to fill out a report and coach the driver.

They all get super defensive and make up excuses like "GUY CUT ME OFF!!!" or "GUY IN A GRAND PRIX WAS FUCKIN WITH ME NOT MY FAULT".

>why are we not backing off the throttle to regain space
>a guy cutting you off is only a 3-5 second event.
>you can easily regain space by letting off the throttle for 30 seconds

>the 15 minutes you supposedly saved by tailgating is spent later sitting in the office getting coached
>"you've never driven a truck you don't know what you're talking a bout"
>irrelevant because there are other drivers in the fleet that NEVER get headway events.
>also irrelevant because I have driven a truck

of course, in person I have to be as polite as possible because the boomers don't like being coached by "some fucking teenager"
>>
>>15047089
>implying he drives aggressively to cut on delivery times

What he likely does is plan out his route very well, and busts his ass when he gets to his destination. I'm sure he's no slouch behind the wheel but trust me, there's no fucking way he would do anything dangerous that could potentially end up in an accident.

The last thing you want to do is make a call to the boss and say "I wrecked the truck"

I do delivery's too, and even though it's on a much smaller scale than the real truckers itt the basics are still there.
>>
>>15047137
Talk to your superiors and get clearance to be more direct, i.e. a dick. Tell them exactly what's up - you were tailgating, and here's the record of your following distance, for how long, and your throttle input. Leave space, or get fired.

we actually have the ASM in the office this week so I think we're going to start implementing progressive discipline. i.e., x amount of headways = termed. a few bad apples are putting the rest of the drivers on edge now because basically every single facet of safety is being scrutinized
>>
>>15047141

>>
>>15047161
i work in dedicated for a regional account. we can't just rework the contract with the customer for hourly rates for the driver. Also, even with a new contract, hourly is a hard sell to customers with regional deliveries.

the other reason that I don't like this answer is because the drivers that are doing this are making it back with plenty of time to spare. When one of these guys kills someone what are they going to say to dot?

>I wanted to get home faster
>they don't pay me hourly so I have to rush.

Some of these guys are making 70k a year in dedicated. They are paid enough so that this needing hourly pay is just a bullshit excuse.
>>
>>15047089
Ehh, there's a line when driving the truck because my company's logo is plastered all over it. I can route it smart so I drive less, but causing an accident being too aggressive is going to waste way more time than just waiting 15sec longer until it is clear to make the turn.

There are a lot more opportunities to make up time while at the stops instead of behind the wheel.
>>
>>15047194
I agree with the cpm thing, it does create a lot of safety issues. Plus it is bullshit for the driver gettin paid since there are so many variables.

But the employers don't want to take the financial risk of paying hourly when the drivers are stuck in traffic or at shippers and receivers.

>>15047137
You're going to need to get some circuit boards fabbed. Tie the proximity sensor to a timer chip. After 5 seconds have it cut off the radios and HVAC blower. After 10 seconds have it power a loud ass buzzer and a light on the dash labled "BACK OFF DUMBASS". After 2 minutes derate the motor to the lowest ECM settings ans a light on the dash that's marked "YOU DUN GOOFED" as well as a strobe light under the hood so everyone in the yard can see they're a dumbass. Leave the power on their truck turned down for a week.

2 warnings, both written, with the second warning they must sign a last-chance agreement where any fuckup, however unrelated, during 3 months will get them fired. After 3 months, they can fuck something else up, but if they tailgate again they're fired. After you fire the first one, make sure all the other drivers know.

It's not about driving a truck.
The other driver probably treats him poorly because he acts like a child when he gets feedback in a conversation.
>nope thats irrelevant. your point doesn't matter. it doesn't work like that because i say so
If you can't take in input from somebody and just toss whatever they say out the door of course they won't respect you. Sadly this is the case for many DMs in the industry. They get greenhorns either from other companies unrelated to trucking and know nothing of how things are out there, or someone that's gotten a cdl and knows how to drive a truck but has never been on the road like the people he manages. I can count on one hand the amount of DMs I've had that understood where I'm coming from. Even if I was in the wrong they understood and suggested how I could fix my mistakes instead of "nope do this and that because I say so fuck whatever you feel".
>>

Non-truckerfag here. I've always been wondering why exactly do trucks need all those extra gears? What's the point of having several reverse gears and 10+ forward ones? Would any of you gentlemen enlighten me on the matter?
>>
>>15051645
fuck off nark
>>
>>15051674
Well american trucks only need a 6 speed synchro box as they haul babby tier weight but for the rest of the world we need all those extra gears to pull 44 TONNES up mountain ranges.
>>
>>15051553
What motivates someone to cram themselves into a low top sleeper on something other than a car hauler in the year of our lord 2011+5?
>>
>>15051674
There's usually two reverse gears, and not because you'd use high reverse, but because it would be more complicated to NOT include it.
You need all those gears to even get moving.
Fully loaded you would generally use 4 gears before you even hit 15mph.
High torque narrow power band. We're talking couple hundred rpm power band.

Thanks for the explanation. I thought it would be something like that, I just didn't think it would be that precise. Looks like Clarkson wasn't kidding when he said that all that truckers do all day is changing gears and murdering prostitutes.

>>15051756
Why, though? You're clearly not gonna go for speed in reverse, so why not have a single gear with all the torque and then what that other guy said about it being more complicated to not have a second reverse for some reason. What do the extra two reverse gears give you?
>>
>>15051791
It's just like he said, it is easier for the manufacturer to make it with the high/lo range and splitters left in for reverse.

I only ever use lo range reverse anyway, except for when I used to do pray seal and we had nice long straights. Just go high range and git her done fast.
>>

Next time you're in a backup watch the trucks. You'll find that except for the tailgating dicks from upthread most are creeping along at a speed and following distance that allows them to keep rolling. Much easier than continually stopping and then getting it moving again.

Years ago when we didn't know better he got a 500 dollar ticket for three little strippers that were under-length. We didn't get to eat them because the warden threw them back in the river. Today he catches as much as he can to get "even" from that day.

I don't eat anything. I stop at McD's on the way home.
>>
>>15053741
Actually that logic is wrong.

The reason why people are catching smaller and smaller fish is because you're not allowed to catch fish below an arbitrary size.
We're taking all the large fish out of the rivers and wondering why fish are getting smaller.

Imagine you had a bunch of dogs, and you only wanted white dogs, I'd you remove all other dogs from the breeding pool, each generation there'll be more and more white dogs.

Fish are taking much longer to mature nowadays, because that's the only way that they get to have multiple batches of offspring.
Bag limits are great, size limits need to be a lot smaller.

You should see how many Coke, 7-Up, and milk crates we throw out everyday. If there are loose bottkes of returns, they normally end up in another company's crates because they never pick them up.

Pepsi pays us like 6¢ a shell to pick them up so I love when I deliver to a pizza place with 500 of them out back.
