I asked this in another thread but didn't get much input, have you guys looked into being a UPS/Fedex driver or working for a uniform company like Aramark? I know some of these guys that come into my shop and they make a lot of money with insane benefits, seems like a good way to go if you can tolerate driving a truck around all day

I deliver to an Aramark vending place. And we get our uniforms from them too. No idea what those dudes make.

I was just fishing at this lake behind some warehouses and some Jamaican owner-op flatbedder was cleaning out his truck and getting ready to set off. I was talking to him for awhile asking about companies and stuff. He did Budweiser for 3 years, and then did OTR for UPS for awhile. He said they are all team drivers and he just stacked money doing that until he could buy his Freightshaker.

He always drives at night ever since UPS. He said the main guy hated driving at night so he got used to it and now racks up the miles while nobody else is on the road.

I have fallen asleep in my truck once or twice. The one time I really went out, the alternator in my truck died and I had to wait like 2hrs for new batteries. Woke up to the mechanic working on the battery box right next to the driver door.

2 minutes is a long-ass time to be under 2-seconds following distance. When they give excuses, point that out to them.

If they won't change their behavior, fire them and hire drivers who will listen. You get these old-ass dudes who dropped out of school in 9th grade, who think that since they've been doing the same thing for 20 years, it must obviously be the right thing. If they were so fucking good at trucking, they'd have their own trucks by now.
You see these losers in every industry. They're dead weight. Get rid of them.

But of course, who am I fucking kidding, you have no authority to fire anyone. You're probably just supposed to wave some middle-manager magic wand and make the shitheads they gave you to into little angels. I would start documenting in an unobtrusive way on the "reports" something like "driver unreceptive to coaching" or "driver has been previously coached on this topic" - just slip it in somewhere without drawing attention to it. Also, use whatever scheduling/dispatching powers you have to limit road time of your worst offenders. Do both of those things, and best case scenario, you cut into their pay enough that they leave the company on their own. Worst case scenario, the documentation will cover your ass when the inevitable disaster happens.

The place Pepsi sends us used to give it to us on a ~3"x5" card so you could still fit it in your wallet folded up. But when I did mine a couple years ago, it was an envelope full of stuff and the main card was a full 8.5"x11". They said something about DOT laws changing but not sure if that is true.

I miss the credit card sized one I got from the chiropractor when I did it on my own. Plus it was way easier than the place Pepsi sends us to. $60 and 5min (blood pressure and vision pretty much) and you're done. Pepsi does Concentra so if you go there at the wrong time of day, it's a 3hr+ ordeal with a full physical and urine test n everything. They probably bill Pepsi like $400 for it too.

It's easy enough to set the difficulty level for the simulator to be easier than the real life case. So if you cannot pass the entry level simulator practicum, you aren't going to move on to using the real truck in driver training. There's no point in you wrecking a real truck if the easier to drive simulator already weeds you out as being unable to drive a truck.

Anyone know how to into wrecking? Been wondering for a while and Whiney reminded me. I got into trucking mainly because big trucks are badass, and then I got a good look at the wreckers at a repair shop and now I want to go bigger

Fully anecdotal here:

My buddy got to work heavy wrecker for a while. He didn't have any official mechanic experience before, especially heavy duty, just a Class A. I guess he did really well on the interview, because they took him on and taught him the necessary aspects of the job. Removal of drive shafts, all the pertinent stuff that I have no fucking clue about. He did have to get a Chauffeur's endorsement on his license for driving people around, but he worked that job for quite a while. Ended up getting fired for missing days or some shit, but the money was good.

Not sure if he ever had to do any tandem-wrecker recoveries. I'm sure that would take a bit of special training to not fuck the whole show up.

You wont start in the big trucks, especially if you don't have any experience driving one.

The big thing about heavy wreckers is the fact that you weight 30-50K lbs and when you toss on another 20K suddenly you weigh ALOT for 3 axles worth of brakes. Plus backing up is a totally different experience, especially if you have a truck/trailer.

In terms of mechanical knowledge you basically need to know how to turn a wrench, and how air system work for the everyday towing. When you get into recovery, especially something that doesn't have much left, you can get really complicated really fast.

Honestly the hardest part is remember all the stupid little quirks everything has. Kenworth 8 bag suspensions are almost impossible to rear tow. Press fit driveshafts are almost always bastards. Volvo automatics can't be moved without the engine running. Volvo aluminum steer axles can't be forked with a trailer or you'll bend them. Fairings need to be tied for rear tows. bla bla bla bla.

Its also a hard job and most places will have you working shifts, and your almost always on call for recoveries that require man power.

FedEx just called me back about their driver apprentice position for city driving and they asked about what endorsements I had. I currently have tankers, doubles-triples, but no hazardous. They said that's okay but by the end of the training they'll require having the hazardous endorsement.

I have hazmat. You have to have like a passport, or original birth certificate, and SS card. You get fingerprinted and answer a bunch of questions. You get a background check, then in 2 weeks you get a letter clearing you.

You take the letter to the DMV and take the hazmat test. If you get your TWIC card at the same time, all cost about 2-300 bucks. Most companies reimburse. I got trained on hazmat the a few months later went to take the test after about 15 mins of studying.

Just got my CDL and looking for a local job at the moment.

My instructor works for Reddaway durning the days and constantly shilled for them. Anyone know what they are like? Sounds about $19/hr starting, have to join a union and have to load and unload your own truck is what kinda put me off. Hours are 10-12 hours a day 5 days a week with OT starting after 8 hours.

Another small building supply company I found is looking for a driver. $16-20/hr they say, no union, will be starting with a small semi with 20 something foot trailer but they have 2 newer freightliners with 53ft trailers. Loads and unloads are usually done for you but if you do it's all brand new materials that's moved with forklifts. M-F day shift. No word on ot yet.

Any Canadians know what the ministry require exactly on the coupling/uncoupling section of the test? I know all the basic procedures (tug test, attaching gladhands, etc) however I just forget the proper order.

I do a lot of driving on the interstate and it seems like a fuck ton of trailers have either Indiana or Maine licence plates, is there a reason behind that or do I just live in a magical spot that has a lot?

Yeah, it is the same in the states, Class A is for tractor-trailer but at least in Washington, the test had three parts:

1) Pre-Trip inspection, without actually doing it. You just kinda point and say what you would be checking for.

2) Backing test, 100feet straight back, 45/ parallel backup, and a 90-degree turn backup.

3) Drive around town test, just don't hit the curb and you are good.

You do not couple / decouple the trailer, and you don't touch the glad hands (though you should point at them on the pre-trip)

Depends on the person running the test. Some let you just talk through the steps, others will make you physically hook/unhook.

The circle check is a joke. You don't even open the hood anymore as per the MTO's instructions. I was told hitting the tires was unnecessary even.

Air brakes is another thing that comes down to instructors. The air brake page actually has a little diagram on it that they can use to do that part of the test with should they want to. The easiest way to ensure you'll do it that way, of course, is to show up with a truck/trailer with disc brakes.

If all else fails, practice your middle eastern accent and threaten to call your lawyer and sue them if they try to fail you. Works every time.
