There is a context to KBB. KBB is more for dealer pricing on clean bikes. Now most dealers are going to be over Blue because they might get a customer not experienced or assertive enough to negotiate. It is safe to assume that "trade in value" plus a little more is decent deal for a used private sale.
The problem is there a quite a few people out there that bought used bikes high, and want to recoup their overpaying on your dollar. In my area, since there are a lot of motorcycle that don't get ridden year round and get neglected during winter, asking for Blue Excellent on a 10 year old bike that has been down and left outside is common.
Be assertive, but not aggressive. Every flaw like bad tires or a oil leak is going to cost you time and money, so value the bike accordingly. Even if the guy is selling it for what he believes to be a fair price, don't pay it, there are tons of bikes out there.
>>

>payments are affordable
>first owner obviously
>mantainance can be done by vendor
>guarantee for X time

what Im doing is getting the full cash with the bank and pay it straigtforward to the vendor, then I can repay the bank at like 1% anual interest, gonna pay in 12 months or less

thoughts?

I love how /dbt/ is oddly attached to inferior technology, you have the people who constantly defend carbs because they're "easy to fix", for some reason you seem out to prove drum brakes are pretty good despite disc brakes being a definite and clear linear improvement.

I mean this very seriously.

hey guys.

i'm thinking of getting a bike to ride to college in NYC (manhattan) this year.

I did some digging, and found that the "best" bike to have for riding in the city is a "motard" bike, whatever that is.

does someone have a list of bikes that fit this category? I'm not looking to spend more than $1200.

any additional advice?

I already have my class M designation.

my first motorcycle (a dr-z125) had drum brakes.

They were fine, there is just no reason to even discuss this, drum brakes are inferior to discs, there's not even much reason to think about them given how cheap and common disc brakes are now.

Why are you trying to prove to people drum brakes aren't that bad?

What's the end result here?

You wont find a motard for 1200 unless it's not running. Motards are the rage right now and it cost 1200 just to convert a dual sport to a sumo. I'd look for older dual sports or nakeds/standards. stuff like nighthawks, CBs, GS 500s. etc
>>
>>14675719
best bike in the city for sub 1200 would be a scooter my main man.

No good. What you want is something carbureted and with drum brakes. Don't worry too much about the front because you want most of your braking power in the rear where the drive is.

Air cooled goes without saying.

does the gs have good suspension? manhattan is fucking ass regarding road quality. i currently drive there for night class via car and it's trash.
>>

>>14675742
>Why are you trying to prove to people drum brakes aren't that bad?

I think it's foolish to dismiss an entire technology without understanding it. There are advantages and disadvantages to both systems, which is why both systems are still used in 2016 (on a variety of vehicles).

I'm not saying that they're SUPERIOR or INFERIOR, they just have some advantages that can apply well to non racey, utilitarian motorcycles.

>>
>>14675811
it has what I would call "budget" suspension. It's gonna be ok for you but isn't gonna be the best thing ever. Honestly if you're planning on doing almost all city riding a very small dual sport is something you're gonna love, look for DR200s or KLR 250s. real reliable little bikes, nimble, and if you have to do highway won't shit out on you. Maybe even something like an XT would be nice. It's not the end all be all and I have bias because dual sport is all I ride but sounds like something to look into.
>>
>>14675816
I think you're foolish for thinking people don't understand drum brakes.

Drum brakes are shit and have always been shit, disc is better. The only reason drum is ever used is because it is cheaper

>>14675845
so the term i'd punch into CL would be "dual sport?"

about 2/3rd of the commute would be pothole free since it's on a highway, but the remaining 1/3rd would be road hell.

>cruisers are shit and so is their culture
Why? because the majority of people who ride them are old farts? Who fucking cares? You don't need to ride with them or associate with other people to enjoy riding a particular type of bike. Just riding a bike is nice in itself, you don't need to submerse yourself in their culture. You don't need to act like a typical biker gang member to enjoy a cruiser or appreciate one.

Other than lack of versatility, cruisers are nice to ride. They're smooth as shit, comfy for long ass rides and fucking tanks for the most part. Me personally, i would never buy one because I like to do off road things and go stupid fast, but I still enjoyed riding one when I get the chance to.
>>
>>14676336

Yeah I guess. I like all bikes. I've owned several kinds of bikes as well and they all have their perks and their drawbacks but I've just found myself more comfortable riding a cruiser. I can still get on it pretty good when I want to and I can do it in comfort. Is it fast? No. Does it handle great? No, but if you really know how to ride it handles well enough to have fun on. Is it for everybody? Fuck no but it's what myself and a lot of other people prefer and I don't see the problem with it. I don't see a problem with anybody preferring one type of bike over the other. They're all just bikes.

This is wise thinking. Some guys will nickle and dime themselves with older high mileage bikes. Nothing wrong with having an old bike with a lot of miles but when it comes time to do a do the rings, valves and put new tires on a $600 bike, you have to stop and ask yourself why you are throwing $300 dollars and a weekend at a $600 dollar bike.

Doesn't matter who is at fault really. At the end of the day, the rider ate shit because he assumed no one would j-walk. One of my lecturers always said when you assume you make an ass out of you and me.

Why did he feel the need to approach a busy intersection like that?

I'd really try not to if you can. There are plenty of newish used examples of bikes around for good prices.

>>14675247
I think it depends where you are. I've encountered some really sketchy highway surfaces further out.

>>14675271
You'll get used to it, or you might want to get higher quality boots if you're using particularly cheap ones.

>>14675289
>yeah but for now I wanna have a reliable bike, used I have to start changing stuff soon and I dont want to worry about that so soon
You'd be surprised honestly. You would only encounter issues if you got a lemon. When I had my MC22 it was twenty two years old and the only thing I had to replace (besides standard consumables) was my battery.

>>14675376
190cc swapped CT110. I got one up to ~100mph before I backed off.

I have drums on my work bikes. I have to adjust them every single day to keep them working properly at all. The stopping force is atrocious compared to a disc.

We only use drums on the work bikes because they're cheaper and the very rear brake heavy riding style we use shreds through pads on discs.

>>14676148
Wicked. Have fun. Only real downside on the 06 is valve adjustments are a bit of a pain since there is twenty of the damn things.

You'll probably want to get the valve shims and what not checked out pretty early on too. R1s eat them.

Exhausts are also expensive if it doesn't have a system already. Don't need a Power Commander though, can remap the stock ECU.

I enjoy riding bigger cruisers. It's fun having stupid amounts of torque and being super comfortable. It's a loud minority of annoying riders in that scene as well. Met plenty of great people who ride cruisers.

It depends on the price and condition. If you are planning on wrenching on it yourself, I recommend a air cooled single carb & single cylinder for a first bike. Less specialized tools are needed for the singles.

>>14676787
twins are honestly not bad for a learner though, syncing two carbs is not that bad, and having two cylinders smooths things out.

Not huge on Two-brothers but it's bound to beat the stock system. The big thing is having a cat-delete mid-pipe.

Toce bug me. They never line up properly haha. I prefer Akrapovic and Termi systems on R1s.

Just make sure you avoid the real cheap Chinese fairings. They never line up properly.

It's ugly as sin but sure, it's a tad old but with good mileage, be prepared for some wrenching perhaps.

As always, find a bike mechanic to accompany you out and inspect it, maybe slip the mechanic bro some dosh.
>>
>>14676864
If you are hooning and they light you up when coming the other way, just pin it as they wont get your plate. Then find somewhere to lay low for the rest of the day.

But if they light you up from behind, the game is already up.

Look up the model for common problems, look up normal things to check for when buying, frame damage, odd welds, rust, make sure all the electrical work, inspect forks. Ask about maintenance, previous owner's ect. I strongly recommend finding a mechanic bro, it will help you out for a long time. Especially on your first purchase. I didn't, was a mistake. Could have been alot worse but still. Try your hardest to make this as smooth as possible.

Only really happens on a track. I've kept up with literbikes and 600s in the twisties using mechanical drum brakes and didn't really get any fade.

Admittedly they weren't the best riders but I was scraping pegs and trail braking like a mad cunt so I would've still expected a bit.

HID projectors are a bit of a pain in the ass to install in these generations of R1s. The stock headlights are super bright so only do it if you REALLY want the look.

I hope it goes well though man. R1s are fantastic bikes.

Looking for first bike, want a dual sport or sumo. Slim pickings around me but found two '09 KLX250SF's, one is $2700 w/ 13k miles, the other is $3000 firm w/ 400 miles.

Do you want a cruiser or a harley? If you want a bike for cruising, then there's objectively better choices out there for cheaper than a harley. If you want a harley just because it's a harley, well you're retarded and there's no saving you.
>>
>>14675848
>>14675868

Drum brakes require fuck all input effort. You can just run a simple bowden cable straight from the lever. This saves on the complexity/failure risk of hydraulic systems and power boosters.

The linings also last much longer for this reason, they're not under such extreme pressure all the time.

They're much more weather and impact resistant than discs.

The main disadvantage with drums is fade resistance, you can get 2-3 panic stops from 60 mpg out of them before you notice fade. However as I mentioned earlier, most dbters seem to ride gs500s, cruisers, dual sports, and the like - these guys would rarely/never approach brake fade in their riding. Although drums would obviously be inappropriate on a supersport.
