So I figured this is a pretty good place to ask.
I am interested in getting a motorcycle but I know next to nothing about them. Is there a certain bike or brand that is good for new riders to learn on or is it different from bike to bike? Also any warnings of certain bikes to avoid at all costs would be nice too.
Pretty much any advice would be appreciated. My family is making a huge deal out of it because "bikes are deathtraps" so they refuse to even discuss the matter.

Suzuki GS500 is always a good place to start. or some kind of 250 4 stroke street bike. I started on a 125 but it's slow as hell and you get bored quick.
Avoid 2 Strokes, they are deadly for new riders even though they "only" have 125 or 250 cc's. Avoid anything heavy like a chopper for your first bike.
Avoid more than ~50 hp for your first bike.
Also don't buy a new bike and please buy yourself good gear. Gear will cost you about 1000€ but you will be happy about that when you drop your bike (which i guarantee you will happen)

Japanese bikes make good starter bikes because they are, for the most part, the most reliable and cheapest to fix. It really depends on what kind of riding you want to do. Street-only around town? Pretty much any cheap, used standard will do fine. Me, I have a DR650 (dual sport; think road-legal dirtbike with a bit more heft) and a V-Strom 1000 (Adventure bike; built for covering continents via highway and dirt roads). A friend put me on a little XR100R dirtbike and it was too much fun; six days later I found the DR650, bought it, and rode the shit out of it. This was in late August or so of last year. Plenty more advice out there...

1. Budget about a grand for good gear. You don't need a $650+ helmet, but god damn they're nice. A ~USD$300 set of riding pants and jacket is a good middle ground and will keep you reasonably comfy in reasonable temperatures and reasonably safe when you go splat (I had quite the highside on the V-Strom because I didn't realize the back tire was worn out from age; not a scratch on me. Just a little bit of soreness in my right knee and hands from how I hit the pavement). Get good, comfortable boots (not all of them are stupid expensive and some of them will look nice instead of tryhard/gaudy). Get good gloves (see my highside comment) for cool and warm weather.

2. Read the sticky/lurk /dbt/. That's wot I did and ended up making a friend IRL, as well as getting recommendations for the type of riding I wanted to do. I wanted to go pretty much wherever I pleased on a reliable bike that didn't have to be sanicfast but could deal with the highway, so DR650 it was.

3. Go do your MSF class (or equivalent if you're not a Murkin like me). Ask the instructor(s) to let you sit on a few different types of bikes since there's usually a good variety.
