Are you going to sell the TW? The prices XR's are going for here makes me feel like I might as well keep it for all I'll be getting. Then again I might feel differently when I actually find a bike I'm interesting in buying as an upgrade. Nothing in my local classifieds is inspiring me right now.

Finally testrode a Zero DSR and FXS yesterday.

It was pretty interesting.
The DSR accelerates about as well as you would expect a 70hp bike to and it has impeccable throttle response.
Obviously it isnt't loud or anything but there is quite a bit of noise from the motor, it sounds like you're in a spaceship when accelerating.
STrangely though I found it a bit sluggish off the line.
I tried a launch by just giving it full throttle from a standstill and it felt slower than a clutch launch on a regular bike initially.
Handling-wise I can't comment, there were no nice roads around but I'd expect it to be like a regular bike.

More in the next post.

The test ride wasn't long enough to get a good feel for the range, I rode maybe 20km and used 11% of the battery.

Next up is the FXS (with two batteries so 44hp). There wasn't much time left so I just rode it through down but it was a blast.
Seriously light and plenty of punch for urban riding. It's basically a WR125X with three times the power, plus no one will look at you weird for riding through a pedestrian underpass because you can't find the one for cars.
This is the bike I would get for urban commuting.

>>14673666
There is, yes. It is customisable via a phone app, it was set to low on the test bike, there was hardly any engine braking at all.
I didn't get it to powerwilly but with some effort it should be possible on the DSR, not sure about the FXS.

Other things I noticed:
The bikes look a lot more high-quality in person than they do in pictures. Except for the MT03 headlight all the components are proper and the fit and finish is up to par with conventional bikes in the price range.

On the test bikes there was too little engine braking. I am used to being able to control my speed with just the throttle.

The motor didn't overheat even after a few full-throttle pulls. It's not meant to be flogged constantly but it can take some abuse.

ok so my bike insurance is separate from my car insurance. i'm going to do traffic school for the speeding, and since it's been less than 18mo between tickets, i can't do it for the stop sign. i figure this is better because if i can't get one to be dropped, the rates should go up less from the stop sign ticket than a speeding ticket.
or, since i'm doing traffic school for the speeding ticket, will my bike insurance not raise, and only raise on the car insurance?

i just need 1 of them to drop so i dont get rates raised, but its unlikely...

Oh mighty DBT hear my call!
I bought a old bultaco matador which I think is a 200cc. The piston chipped, burned, screeched and died way before I owned it. I can't find a piston for it and would rather have a 250cc 5speed anyway. Are bultaco heads interchangeable? Where can I find parts for this thing?

there normally is a bit of oil in that tunnel, what I think is that there's a small hole in the gaiter (7 in pic), or it's just porous because of time
the other side of 7 is attached to the transmission, and the drive shaft goes through that gaiter and part 1 to the rear wheel drive

If anyone remembers me, I'm the guy who was thinking about financing my first bike. You guys are totally right, fucking dumb idea. CL is dripping with Ninja 250R's for $1500-$2000. I can shit that much cash and just own it outright. Then insurance is like $30 a month. Glad I came to /o/.

How retarded do Ninjas look if you take off the fairings?

I still think there's nothing really wrong with financing a bike. I financed a 600 and I don't regret it. Payments are cheap as fuck, it's new so I know it's maintenance history, I trust it completely, it's mine and 250's are shiiiiit for highway riding.
>>
>>14674595
Im planning to do this with my first bike, I dont trust much the sellers around here so I'd rather get a new one

>mantainance can be done by vendor

what Im doing is getting the full cash with the bank and pay it straigtforward to the vendor, then I can repay the bank at like 1% anual interest, gonna pay in 12 months or less
>>
>>14674595
>I still think there's nothing really wrong with financing a bike

It depends how you do it. If you use a bank loan or 0% card for a used bike just to spread the cost that's a good way to do it, but getting jewed on a new bike from a dealer with finance is not the way to go unless you have enough money and want to PCP so you have a new bike every 2 years.

I think it honestly looks better.

I can afford the payments on buying new, but the insurance is more and I don't really plan on doing a lot of highway riding anyway. At least not until I actually know what I'm doing. I like having most of my skin. And I can just own it outright for less than a paycheck.

I know reasonably well what to look for to determine if it's 100% fucked. Oil level, clutch condition, brake pads and rotor wear, chain lube, and whether or not it sounds like a chainsaw.

I know you guys don't give a shit; I'm just thinking out loud.

Personal Contract Purchase, It's something here in Britain for new cars/bikes.

You pay a deposit which is something like 10-20% or the new price, I'm not sure why it's called a deposit since you don't get it back.

Then you pay monthly payments for 2-3 years like a loan. At the end of the period, you can give the car/bike back to the people you bought it off and get a new deal with reduced deposit, or pay the 'balloon payment' to actually own the car.

Basically you pay for the first few years of depreciation, it's a good way to have a new car often without totally committing to a purchase and having to sell it yourself or whatever.

You are absolutely making the right decision with a smaller capacity bike, man, don't let the squids dissuade you. There are more than enough hazards when on a bike, you don't need overt speed added to the mix as a beginner.
>>
>>14674674
>You are absolutely making the right decision with a smaller capacity bike

I would only say this is a good decision if you have not been driving for a while before riding. Otherwise a tamer ~600cc bike is going to be the best all-round option.

lmao what state do you live in? In Cali everyone speeds like a mad cunt. I'll be going 80mph and some faggot in a lifted truck will literally fly by me and be gone in a second.

It's fucking insane how many people around here drive above 90 in a 65. You can't even sit safe in the slow lane because people will literally dog pile exits 3 lanes across and stop completely, I almost crashed the first time I rode on the highway because I did not expect the car in front of me to suddenly stop completely and then I couldn't even swerve around because the adjacent 2 lanes were just a mess of cars completely stopped on the freeway trying to shove into a one lane exit. Fuck San Jose faggots.

250's aren't bad though, I want one, but I wouldn't feel safe on the highway around here with one.
>>
>>14674692
>>14674660
Oops forgot to write.

BMW has a balloon payment style option thing for their financing too but it makes no sense. It's the same except you get no bonus or anything for trading in. It's literally just an overglorified bike rental with a huge payment at the end if you want to keep it.
>>
>>14674692
>250's aren't bad though, I want one

I've often thought about having a lower capacity bike just to go to work and keeping a sportsbike for other stuff, but then what exactly is the advantage of a smaller bike other than slightly easier to work on? It's not like they are hugely cheaper, in the UK at least.

Only reason they exist is license restrictions and off road.
>>
>>14674692
It's an arm wrestle, being so tiny and the windscreen so low compared to your head with the 250's ergos, it's really shit. if you had a short highway commute, like, 20 mins maybe, sure you could manage. But keeping it at 90 with wind? Have fun with sore everything.

I don't know what you mean, adv bikes are literally just upright touring bikes with less fairing.

Just because marketers throw knobbies on them doesn't make them dirt bikes.

They're like luxury off road SUV's, except they're actually useful for something: touring.
>>
>>14674786
Maybe it's a case of correlation not equaling causation, but how many new or updated ADV bikes have there been recently compared to dual sports? Every company has an ADV bike, the only dual sport that isn't 10+ years old is the 690, and I guess the KLR but that's like the worst of both worlds.

Because they are popular right now. I think they aren't updating the dual sports because a lot of people that buy them want dead reliable air cooled and carb setup. Not much they can do with it power wise without compromising reliability and other components are built aroud the price.

I'm talking about the DR/XR650 of course.

I don't like the DCT because I like to be in control of the clutch when offroading. I'm not sure how well the AT does with this.

And I like muh reliability and don't mind carbs but I am still surprised there are only a few dual sports around with EFI. Japan pretty much gave up on the dual sport market it seems. Don't want to bother meeting EPA requirements probably

Not the guy you responding to, but riding in crosswinds is easy for me.

Loose on the bars
Ride in the center of the lane.
Make slow corrections for the wind hitting you.
-Because
--If you react with a jerk correction because of a gust, you are setting yourself up for failure with tense shoulders and over-correcting.
--If the gust or wind vanishes during your correction you are not steering out of your lane.
Also, give everyone a wide berth, and keep a little higher for better stability.

From a design standpoint, the carbs systems on the engine are well known and proven. Adding a fuel pump and all the sensors needed for EFI would increase the cost not from components alone but also paying for new tooling, retraining, and all the other things that need to be done to transition.
The other thing to take into account is a lot of the aircooled bikes have not been changed significantly for 20+ years, and that means that the setup costs have been amortized for a long time and these bikes are probably cash cows even if they aren't flagship models.

Fuck, I had a XL600R I bought for 600 bucks, and when it finally died, I noticed Hondas XR650s were going for almost ten times that. Most of the tech is still the same though.

Why? Dual sports are popular right now and the DRZ and WR250R are walking the market for non-650 non-dinosaur dual sports. There is no reason for more not to be on the market.

Where the fuck is an EFI water cooled 450cc factory dual sport out of Japan? Would make the perfect builder for a proper adventure bike.
