A hospital can often be a cold, sterile place, and probably the last place you'd expect to find love. That's especially true if you're just 12-years-old. But Stella Usiak and Lucas Lowe have found a very special friendship while both fighting a very serious disease.
"She's had a crush on me for a while now, and I've had a crush on her, so her and me are boyfriend and girlfriend now," said Lucas.
Stella describes Lucas as hilarious and "a gentleman." And Lucas describes Stella as kind and nice, "like a woman should be," he said.
Lucas and Stella first met when they both started fighting Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Both went into remission, then both relapsed. Both had bone marrow transplants and both have constantly been in and out of hospitals, including Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
"He worries about how I'm feeling just like I worry about how he feels," said Stella.
The hospital staff has watched their special friendship grow.
"No one really knows what a kid with cancer is going through- not the parent, not the nurse, not a friend- the only other person that knows what a kid with cancer is going through is another kid with cancer," said Roswell Park Registered Nurse Angelica Zachara.
Understandably, Lucas and Stella's dates have to be simple, and they're ok with that. They have lunch, Lucas pushes Stella in her wheelchair, and they just talk.
"It was like this cute little old couple, sitting on the porch. It's very rare that kids their age could kind of have that sort of compassion for each other," said Stella's mom, Jennifer Usiak.
They say mostly their conversations do not revolve around their disease and treatment. They just chat about normal kid stuff. While they are mature and different from most kids, they're young and innocent, too.

When times get really tough- the pain too much to bear- Stella and Lucas know how to lift each others spirits. You can see it in this video Lucas made for Stella.
"It made her feel special and she cried and I cried," said Lucas.
"It was amazing. I've never felt that way in my life, ever," said Stella. "It made me so happy. It made me feel like I'm a princess."
For better or for worse, in sickness and in health. That vow truly means something to the young couple, so Lucas gave Stella a ring for Valentine's Day.
"It says 'You are my sunshine. My only sunshine.' And yeah, it means a lot," said Stella.
Most parents would discourage kids from that kind of commitment, but the parents of Stella and Lucas don't see it that way.
"Cancer teaches you, you are not guaranteed tomorrow," said Maureen Warren, Lucas' mom.
Stella and Lucas are thankful for each day they have together.
"I'm so lucky," said Stella. "Yes, I have been given all these bumps in the road, and all this yucky stuff,but if I never got that, I wouldn't have met Lucas."
Doctors might not yet have found a cure for childhood cancer, but these two children found the healing power of love.

China’s is hoping to lose its image as a sometimes unhygienic country in a widely publicized “toilet revolution“, but it may all be for nothing. Last week, people in two different cases ignored bathrooms to answer nature’s call in some very public places.
On the morning of May 9, an unidentified middle-aged woman was caught on camera defecating in full view by a train station in Dalian, Liaoning.
While some Chinese media have said pedestrians were “shocked” by the woman’s brazenness, the video shows about eight people walking past her without one of them giving her a second look.
And even if the camera didn’t capture the gasps of offended pearl-clutchers just out of view, the woman herself displays a nonchalance towards public defecation that shows no shame. After wiping herself and hiking up her pants, the woman doesn’t furtively sneak away from the evidence of her disgrace; instead, she waits to be handed a plastic bag that she can use to conceal her public transgression.
The next day on the other side of the country, it happened again on a bus in Kunming.
A male commuter is seen on the bus’ suveillance camera rocking back and forth in apparent discomfort, continually touching his belly. When the bus pulls into the terminal station and most everyone disembarks, the reason becomes clear: the man had surreptitiously pulled his pants down slightly and pushed out of his butt the biological remains of what was bothering him.
As new passengers filed onto the bus, each did their best to ignore the intruder in their midst as they each tried to make it to work on time.
Kunming bus driver Zhu Lingmei told a television news reporter that she had “never seen anything like this before in her life.”
There is no Chinese law that expressly forbids people from defecating in public.

It's not a sight Sergeant James Givens is used to seeing, a goose pecking at his cruiser door, but that's what happened Monday, May 9, and initially the veteran Cincinnati officer thought the goose was simply hungry.
"It kept pecking and pecking and normally they don't come near us. Then it walked away and then it stopped and looked back so I followed it and it led me right over to the baby that was tangled up in all that string," Givens said.
The string was tied to a Mother's Day balloon among some of the litter near Mill Creek. Givens shot video on his cellphone. He and Specialist Cecilia Charron called the SPCA, but no one was immediately available to come out. So Charron took matters into her own hands.
"Well she has a couple of kids of her own and I guess that motherly instinct must've kicked in because it was like they communicated. The mother goose didn't bother her," Given said. "So Specialist Charron came and untangled it. It took her awhile because it was all wrapped up."
"I always thought that they were afraid of people and people say they will attack you if you get close to their young'uns and I was just surprised."
It certainly isn't the toughest part of the job, but these officers couldn't turn their backs on a mother and child reunion.
Givens said he recorded it because it's something you don't see every day.

Workers scrub the walls clean every day, but the regular scrubbing can damage the floral mosaics and shiny marble surface, said Bhuvan Vikram of the Archaeological Survey of India.
"A series of marble panels depicting plant motifs on the walls or reflective tiles used in this part of the monument are becoming disfigured," Vikram said.
Authorities are looking for a permanent solution to the problem created by the insects from the genus Goeldichironomus, a type of elongated fly that resembles a mosquito, that is proliferating in the polluted Yamuna River. The river has stagnated to the point that it no longer supports fish that once kept the insects in check, environmentalist Yogesh Sharma said.
In addition, heavy algal growth and deposits of phosphorus from ash dumped by a nearby cremation ground "are the primary source of food for this particular species of insect," said Girish Maheshwari, who heads the Department of Entomology at St. John's College in the northern city of Agra.
The highest elected official of the state of Uttar Pradesh, where the Taj Mahal is located, called the insect menace a matter of "serious concern."
The Taj Mahal, one of India's most cherished tourist attractions, brings millions of visitors to Agra every year. Archeologists are also struggling to protect the monument from air pollution, which turns the marble yellow and brown.
"Officials have been asked to investigate as why there is sudden increase in number of these insects and how to control their population," Uttar Pradesh state spokesman Navneet Sehgal said.
The Taj Mahal was built by Mogul Emperor Shah Jahan between 1632 and 1654 for his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, and houses their graves and a mosque.
