The European Commission has today announced a partnership with Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Microsoft in order to crack down on what it classes as “illegal hate speech” while “criminaliz[ing]” perpetrators and “promoting independent counter-narratives” that the European Union favours.

The move has been branded “Orwellian” by Members of the European Parliament, and digital freedom groups have already pulled out of any further discussions with the Commission, calling the new policy “lamentable”.

The commitments include “educat[ing] and rais[ing] awareness with their users” and building a “network” of “trusted reporters” to flag unwanted content. Facebook and Twitter are to provide “regular training to their staff on current societal developments” and work more closely with national governments and “their law enforcement agencies” to remove content the EU does not favor.

Most alarmingly, however, the platforms have also promised to engage in the active promotion of views and organisations the EU does favour, and the re-education of supposedly hateful users.

Trash-talking Philippine presidential favourite Rodrigo Duterte has warned he is prepared to cut diplomatic ties with the United States and Australia after their envoys criticised his comments about the jailhouse rape of a missionary.

Duterte also told the ambassadors to "shut their mouths", as controversy raged over his comments last week in which he said he wanted to have been the first to rape the Australian woman who was brutalised and murdered in a 1989 prison riot.

"If I become president, go ahead and sever (diplomatic ties)," Duterte, 71, said on the campaign trail on Wednesday night, referring to the relationships with the United States and Australia, two of the Philippines' closest allies.

Duterte, who while campaigning has called the pope a "son of a bitch" and promised to kill tens of thousands of criminals, recounted at a recent rally the attack on the Christian missionary as part of his tough-on-crime pitch to voters.

"I was mad she (the missionary) was raped but she was so beautiful. I thought, the mayor should have been first," she told the crowd.

Duterte was at the time mayor of Davao, a major city in the southern Philippines where he is accused of running vigilante death squads that have allegedly killed more than 1,000 people.

The front runner has at times on the campaign boasted about running the death squads, claiming they killed 1,700 people, but also denied any links to them.

Duterte has similarly offered varying responses to the rape comments, with his media team releasing a statement in which he apologised. But on the campaign trail, he has repeatedly told reporters he would not say sorry.

Australian ambassador Amanda Gorely criticised his remarks this week, saying on Twitter: "Rape and murder should never be joked about or trivialised. Violence against women and girls is unacceptable anytime, anywhere".

A Chinese woman was seen eating live goldfish, live eel and mealworms on an online platform for live videos, intriguing many netizens.
The woman has live-streamed her drinking and eating up of a live goldfish from a glass of water and her eating from a full plate of mealworms with her bare hands, according to online snapshots of the live videos which were uploaded online by a usernamed of “ChihuoFengjie,” or literally translated as “Ms. Feng who eats everything.”
On other photos, the woman could be seen with over a dozen lit cigarettes stuffed in her nose or with firecrackers binding her body from the neck to the knees.
The woman has also allegedly live-streamed herself eating light bulbs or smashing a watermelon with her head, according to netizens.
Her account on the video platform Kuaishou said she was 48 and her hobby is to “eat things normal people cannot.” She has over 110,000 followers on the platform and has uploaded at least 30 videos.

Her profile picture portrays herself holding a live eel and biting the head, which was also part of the 30 videos.
While some felt intrigued, many called to stop the show allegedly staged by the woman’s nephew who also appeared because of a selfie used and the angle the video feed was shot from during the live video broadcast, yet the woman seemed unwilling.

Cyber police of north China’s Hebei province on Friday said on its official Sina Weibo that they have noted the incident.
As online live video platforms began to grow in popularity in China, many Chinese netizens have tried to make their name online by live-streaming different kinds of performances and some even went too far with live video broadcasts encompassing sexual content.

State officials have begun demolishing illegally constructed homes in a Roma community in the village of Plekhanovo, located about 115 miles south of Moscow. During the demolition of one building, a Roma man entered the home under the pretext of saving a kitten inside. He then exited the building with the cat in hand, telling police, “A kitten is a human being, too.” The officers laughed, but then the man suddenly threw the animal with all his might at a brick wall, killing it instantly.

The incident occurred in the presence of several locals, as well, including a handful of journalists and children. The man was then arrested and faces a fine of 80,000 rubles ($1,200), as well as up to a year of community service, or even six months in prison.

New Delhi: When Pradeep Sharma married the woman he loved, he promised to keep her happy forever. But within months, all that was left was insecurity, distrust and regret. The marriage finally ended in the most horrific manner. On Monday, an inebriated Sharma murdered his 23-year-old wife Monika, sexually violated her body and then slept beside it till late in the morning. It took five days for the police to nab the 25-year-old murderer on Saturday.
It was love at first sight when Sharma saw Monika at his brother's wedding last year. Sharma, unemployed and considered the "bad boy" of his locality, swore to reform and find a job in order to marry her. The couple initially lived in Bulandshehr in Uttar Pradesh, but shifted to Nihal Vihar in Delhi six months ago.
As promised, Sharma began driving an e-rickshaw, but his meagre takings could not take care of the house rent, groceries and other expenses. The couple began having frequent brawls over finances. They were even evicted from two houses for their constant quarrels.
