So, do you think that this project will ever be completed? I know that some of the steps are currently being implemented, but what are the odds of ever having a real HSR corridor in Upstate New York?

Bike newb here.

Long story short, I would like to get a new bike, because my current one works pretty hard.

How did I figured out my bike works pretty hard? Checking out my friends' bikes and saw a clear difference in performance.

The bike I'd like - a mountain bike that I'll mostly use in the city (there are a lot of holes in the pavement where I live, and I need suspensions for that). Also I'll most likely pedal through forest tracks in the park and near the city.

So /n/, I'd like to know what are the things that I need to check at a bike to make sure it's cool for me and its performance is the best I can get for the money.

had you considered just avoiding the potholes?

Regardless, it's a slow board, so next time go to the buy bike general thread

In the meantime, post your local craigslist and tell me how tall you are and I'll pick something out for you
>>
>>916302

1) They are almost impossible to avoid. Not to mention the drivers are the best quality douchebags by parking their cars on our tracks most of the time (pic related)

2) Never found a bike general thread. Is it in /n/?

3) We don't have a craigslist where i am. I'm about 1.83m
>>
>>916304
looks like those cars are avoiding them

or are you saying they're parked? If so, you could easily slide by to their right

do you have an equivalent to craigslist?

What's a city with a good tram system? I've notice that tram systems are really just a nightmare to access because they are placed within the middle of the road.

What's tram system that doesn't have people running across the road to access the tram?
19 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
>>914964
Are you suggesting a tram would be better placed on the side of the road? You do know that buses or trams on the side have WAY lower commercial speeds than if they run in the middle?
>>
>>914964
>What's a city with a good tram system?
Pretty much every larger city in central Europe.
Many of them solved the access problem by converting the tram into a Stadtbahn though.

Thoughts on the new Siemens Charger line of locomotives?
19 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
It seems like we've been talking about them and Siemens has had accepted bids for the locos for years now. When the hell are we gonna get a finished product? Hopefully soon by this year.
>>
>>913495
According to Siemens, they are scheduled to roll out in Fall of this year.
>>
I feel as though Siemens is trying to entice Amtrak by having almost 200 avaliable units, but Amtrak a) doesn't have the funding, and b) doesn't plan on replacing their current diesels until 2024. Which means that the Genesis series will be about thirty years old by the time they're replaced.

If you look at Kanto, the rolling stock used by JR East is all new. There's E233-0 on the Chuo Line, E233-1000 on Keihin-Tohoku, E233-3000 on the Tokaido and Tohoku Lines, Joban Line has various new stock (like E531), the new E129 series is starting to replace rural 115 and 211 series trains (like in Niigata), the E235 just rolled out on the Yamanote Line, Nambu Line got new E233 series trains, there are new trains for the limited express services (E259, E353).

But in Osaka and Kyoto, all the trains are *old*. The Osaka Loop Line still uses 103 and 201 series trains from 40 years ago. Other suburban lines use the 207 series which is 25 years old. And even the newer rolling stock (like 521 series in Kanazawa) still use those old JNR signs to indicate whether it's a local, rapid, etc. service. The only exception is the 227 series in Hiroshima which uses LED signs. In rural areas 115 series trains have been used since the 60s.

So, what's up with JR West? Why does it spend all this money on Shinkansen trains, but cheap out on commuter/suburban rolling stock?

http://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/question_detail/q11137572006

The answers generally agree that JR West doesn't have the financial resources that JR East does to replace its JNR stock.

Personally I'm a JNR fanboi so I prefer older trains than the newer, flashier ones.
>>
>>913212
Because newer doesn't necessarily = better and why waste money on upgrading rolling stock if the old stock works just fine?
>>
>>913230
Which then raises the question: why is JR East richer than JR West?

Did JR West spend all its money on Shinkansen?

Now, without going too off topic, allow me to explain what I want, know, and wish to know. And there will be a tl;dr I promise. Currently I am a 25 y/o War vet who was discharged from the military for marijuana use/Medically Disabled (went through a lot of dark periods after deployment). I have bad credit, no job (worth mentioning), and no land. Most of my close family is either deceased or out of state. I have no kids, pets, and am divorced. I make most of my living income off of VA disability (can only do office jobs, but can't find one). I need something new. My life, interests, hobbies, everything has grown stale, bleak, and gray. I need a change of scenery, and I think it needs it be a drastic one. Of course, move to a new country. I chose Japan not because of typical "Anime comes from there" fantasies (to each his own, this just isn't sound for deciding the rest of your life to me).

I chose it because I think I would enjoy the work ethic, group mentality, structure, and culture (always been a electronic/video game addict. Techy devices and such that may just be a waste of money are my favorite things to discover. I enjoy the compact living spaces and subsequently shorter travel distances to get to anything. i enjoy the idea of city lights, lighted streets and sidewalks to navigate at 3am when I need something late. On top of that, I feel safer in their economy than I do here (leave this one be, it's not a political debate).
I want to do it, I want to go from 0 prep now, to starting new in Japan, whatever it takes. My plan right now is this. Start school in a tech field with courses for Japanese. Work up to and earn bachelors degree, get VISA to work as English Teacher, integrate from there and live on. Now, that's all I have. people say teaching English is about it if you want a liveable salary (despite how low it is). I don't know what this means in regards to the VA and my disability claim (could care less if I lose them if I have job anyway). I don't know what timeframe is realistic, I know nothing else. Are there any good resources to check? Any services that help with this? Any help is appreciated. I know in terms of criminal background, I have nothing, so I know that's fine. But does bad credit inhibit getting a VISA? I dunno.
tl;dr: Need to know, with no college at 25, what I need to do to move to Japan.
>>
>>913044
I don't think that taking Japanese courses in college will prove too useful to be honest. When I was in school I took some introductory courses but it became apparent pretty quickly that teaching it to yourself would be just as effective. Perhaps the only real benefit to being in a class was that there were other people with whom I could actually try to converse with in Japanese, but considering the nature of college it isn't difficult to find someone to talk to (it's as simple as going to a language club) to practice speaking. If you're actually as motivated as you make yourself out to be, then teaching it to yourself will likely be the best course of action especially considering that from a financial perspective you will be less burdened.

kek, i've never heard of a better raisin to lose weight.

>>912678
My New Years resolution is to see how many FARs i can legally break with an ultralight (kidding)
but seriously, i do want to get into Powered Paragliders

The lack of a need for a runway, the minimal regulation, and the relative freedom of ultralight class aircraft has me wanting one of these.

Are there any paragliders here? If so, any tips for a beginner? Any recommended reading?

If anyone has any motors or wings they would suggest, that would be bretty cool too.

I've been looking at some wings so i can start to practice kiting, but blackhawk seems to be the only place online that will even give me a price. Their Elektra glider doesnt look bad desu.

I weigh about 185, but i would like it to be able to support my father's weight of about 235, so thats another raisin i kinda like that one.
