blog post, sorry.
i've been playing for 5 months now and just finished the justinguitar beginner course, but i feel like shit.
all i want to do is start making music but i can't really do that cause i don't even know how to play anywhere on the fretboard with chords that aren't just open ones.
i feel like shit because i knew i should've just gotten a teacher right away, i'd be way better than i am now.

luckily my aunt's bf has been playing for 10 years and he's agreed to give me some lessons, so it could be worse. i wish i had just gotten over that stupid thought that having a teacher would prevent me from eventually developing an own style
/blog

anyone else not get a teacher until later on, and how was it? did you progress quicker than you were doing on your own?
>>
>>74464219
I never got a teacher and that has made learning to play guitar a Via Dolorosa. Basically a good teacher just teaches you theory and technique and you can then figure out on your own, what to do with that knowledge. So if you want to learn fast, get a teacher. He/she won't change your style, unless you specifically want jazz guitar lessons for example. Once you got the basics covered, it's much easier to learn new things on your own. It's like learning to drive a car; someone will teach you the rules and handling and after that you can drive anywhere you want. At least in Finland the teacher doesn't dictate, what you do with your car afterwards...
>>
>>74464219
I first had a teacher when I had ~3 years of playing. He helped me correct my form and posture which I needed badly.
I quitted because after a year because he was showing me the same exercises again and again and he was shilling blues and classic rock a bit too much.
>>
Anyone have any tips for surf guitar tremolo picking? I can kind of do it on the thinner strings, but on the higher (E, A, D, sometimes G) strings it feels really awkward and the pick gets stuck.

Also, should you do it from your elbow or wrist? I've seen both methods used by accomplished guitarists.
>>
>>74464599
From the wrist unless you're Dick Dale bro
and try to pick closer to the bridge
>>
>>74454807
that looks so fucking retarded
>>
>>74464219
I had a teacher for a few months and dropped it eventually (mostly for monetary reasons)
But I think the foundation was helpful
Beyond open chords, the next step in my opinion, is E and A shape barre chords
Knowing these opened me up to sooo many things
You will definitely be able to make music using just open chords and barre chords

>all i want to do is start making music but i can't really do that cause i don't even know how to play anywhere on the fretboard with chords that aren't just open ones.
you can start moving your open chords up the fretboard and barring where the open strings would be. this is called CAGED system - the letters to the basic open chords.
if you already know bar chords, notice that they are the same as E and A chords. thats what you do.
for example, a C chord moved up to being an E chord wold be like
e-5
b-6 - barring the 5th fret with the index
g-5
d-7
a-8
e-x

that and learn scales and chord theory. chords are made up of scale notes, you pick the chord notes, find them up the fretboard and you got new chord shapes, then you memorize some and dont need to figure them all the time

Guys I have a friend who is willing to sell me his ibanez btb 6 bass guitar, it seems in really good condition, I'm a guitar fag but wanna get my hands on a bass too so for 50% off the full price in a guitar store seems good to me.
I know that it's a six string and has bartolini mk1 active pickups and that's pretty much it.
Anyone has any experience with these bass guitars?
Also I don't have a budget for an expensive tube bass amp, are the solid state bass amps good enough for not serious bedroom playing? Would they be fine with bass pedals?
Thanks for the help!

It's really generic. I don't know exactly what genre you're going for, but it just is really lacking in personality.
If you want to truly progress, put some time into really studying what makes a great guitar riff.

Disagree, the distortion is pretty weak. It's neither weighty or punchy, sounds really cheap.
If nothing else, it could benefit from routing the dry signal through a bit of overdrive first. Really beef up that tone

I think I know why it might sound like shit now that I think about it. The amplifier I'm using has two separate channels, one for a clean tone and one that has tone presets. I played through a preset for some reason whilst having distortion set up on the foot pedal. Perhaps that's what made it sound muddied? I'm still trying to figure out how to dial in that sweet spot, it also doesn't help that I was up for almost 40 hours when this was recorded.

Ibanez basses are good, I've got an SR306, my friend has an SR505 and they're both a pleasure to play.
I wouldn't recommend a BTB 6 to someone who's starting on bass for multiple reasons.
First one obviously being because it's a 6 string. You won't really know what to make out of the extra high C before a while. And the width of the neck is going to be a problem, more so on the BTB models since the string spacing is wider.
The other reason I wouldn't recommend a BTB is because they're 35" long. You might think "oh it's just an extra inch more", but coming from a guitar it can cause some trouble when playing in the low register. Plus again, it's a six string.
Also as of 2017, they've changed the BTB models a little bit, they now have a zero fret, stainless steel frets and the preamp has a little more high end, so guitar stores will also cut down the price on those models if they're not cunts.

tl;dr : good bass, bad for beginners

I haven't tried any instrument with one as it's usually a high-end thing.
I like the principle of it (getting a consistent sound between the open string and the frets). Supposedly, the only counterpart is that you have to replace it after a while. But that's the same as every fret and honestly with SS frets, you're safe for a long time.

If the intonation is a problem tune for the position on the neck or chords that you're gonna play. But fixing intonation won't fix not bothering to tune in the first place.

Neither tuning or intonation is all that hard to fix buy some basic tools in a toolkit and fix both if they are both a problem..

It's probably combination of two things: intonation is off, you need to physically check your neck vs string tension, adjust bridge etc. And probably if you are playing with old strings they might go flat against the pressure if it's too much force, as well. To also add that adjusting the rod is very intricate business as such that you should never adjust it more than quarter or half revolution and then re-check the intonation again. Check some youtube videos like from philip mcknight or something, he goes into lot of detail. Hopefully you didn't screw your guitar permanently. I always avoid adjusting neck to the last possible moment. Only do it if it's absolutely necessary.

Man, 8 minutes in, and it is surprisingly fun. I feel my fingers getting stronger too.

Try to make best out of it by concentrating on your right hand as well. Keep perfect form and all that shit. When doing regular exercises it's possible to see improvement just in couple of weeks if you work out every day. Also sometimes when playing couple of weeks in row every day for couple of hours and then having one week off helps a lot with recovering as your body heals your tendons and shit.
