No, just raise the action or adjust the truss a little. You're not gonna get that tight a specs on that.
>>
>>74431471
That's precisely why I want the fretwork done, I'd like it to have a lower action without buzzing. It's not high by any standard, but I'd like it nice and low.
>>

How low is it now? You're not gonna get it much lower than 2mm.

I know that it's preference, and I would prefer a lower action. But the question is whether that's feasible. There are limits even with perfect fretwork, so I'm trying to figure out whether it would make sense to have the fretwork improved.

Quit instead, you are already too far behind the curve, you aren't talented enough already. People the same age are already miles ahead of your sloppy blues-rock mimic riffs and by the time you catch up to where they are now they will already be that much farther ahead of you.

If you continue one day you're gonna get home from your minimum wage job that you've been working at for years to pay bills 'til the 'guitar bux' start rolling in, you will look at your guitar, and you will realize you basically achieved nothing and never will. Not only that but you will actively dislike playing the instrument.

it was all about the hardware and wood with me. didn't feel right.
i like the body of the SRs, light weight, easy to manuever.
on the other extreme, the shecter i use is a whopping 15 pounds of swamp ash body and maple neck. the fretboard gives a very bright tone that's thickened out with the EMG pickups.
i bought it through GC, had it shipped to the store and had no issues. i no that a good amount of anons here aren't US so a reliable store may be tough to find.
i don't think i could buy an instrument from a private person, but if there's a store that's good i'm willing to give it a shot.

I have a fender bass man 250 amp and recently it started only playing very quietly but at the same time very distorted, I found out the fuse was blown and replaced it and still no luck. >>
>>74438331
Coming from a guitarist (I assume) you're probably seeing the bass as a lower tuned guitar. In actuality it is the bridge between the rhythm section (drums) and the melody (guitars). And actually "mastering" a bassline or playing bass in general means that you not only have perfect internal time but that you also lock in with the drums which means ever so slightly delaying or playing early so that the attack of the bass matches or compliments the attack from the different kinds of sounds a drumkit makes. That and knowing how to groove with a drummer, how to construct a proper bassline (which means you do need to learn harmony and how your bass relates to the melody that is being played on top of it), etc. make bass just very different from guitar.
I think comparing the two is silly.
>>
>>74438523

who are you expecting to actually read this shit
>>
>>74438503
Walking bass (if you're into jazz) is also fun and not very technically complex or fancy, you'll find tons of interesting and "fun" basslines pretty much everywhere that aren't related to super fancy technique, just regular bass playing.
>>
>>74438523

Bass is fun if you put in the work for it and understand what your role is. Not saying you only have to hit the root, but don't be those stereotypical guitarist who switch to bass and try to show off, it's just embarrassing.

I was trying to give the other guy my perspective of playing bass as a guitar player using the very subjective measurement of "fun". I'm well aware that the bass isn't a lower tuned guitar, which is part of the reason I find it less fun to play. A lot of rock basslines that sound good and serve the music are fairly simple and not challenging to play. There's nothing wrong with that, but as a guitar player I'm far more drawn to styles of music where the bass can play a more active role and still sound like it belongs, like funk and prog rock.

No but great bassists are hard to find. Same with drummers. Because essentially great bassist keeps time and makes the song go foward. If you can stay 100% in time and be very exact... good for you but I doubt you can do that. You need to play tight.

>>
>>74443934
There is actually science to this, I'll have to look it up but basically: the human brain is MUCH more sensitive to timing errors or small differences in lower frequencies than it is in higher frequencies. That and the role of the bassist being so closely related to the rhythm section means that bassists need ridiculously good internal time and they need to lock in with the drummer in a way that isn't necessarily required from guitarists.

Of course a good guitarist will also have good time, every musician has to (except for classical string players, lel), but it's simply not required in the same way. If a guitarist would just pick up a bass and play the same simple bass line as the bassist without any real training then chances are he'd be in time but not "locked in" with the drummer.

Do any of you guys incorporate vocal warm-ups / vocal scale practice into your practice and playing routine?

I've found that doing warmups to free-up my vocal apparatus along with some repetitive scale singing does wonders for getting my mind in the proper mode to be musical. It allows me to process music both incoming and outgoing (hearing, mental composing, playing) so much better and is like a massive level-up in my playing and improvisational ability.

I've heard some jazz pianists recommend the same thing - that being able to sing what you want to play is a critical skill.
>>
>>74449299
>I've heard some jazz pianists recommend the same thing - that being able to sing what you want to play is a critical skill.

i think it's essential. if you're not hearing what you want to play in your head before you play it you're essentially just noodling within a scale

i think people who've really mastered their instruments (and any good jazz improviser) know what something they play is going to sound like before they actually play it.

obviously this doesn't matter at all for songwriting because you can take any amount of time to find something you hear in your head. or you can just fuck around until you find something that sounds good

>build your ear
Yeah, that's a good phrase for what I'm talking about -- our minds by default have the ability to "fill in" sounds or transpose sounds into something it's accustomed to hearing. After warming up with scales that hit the notes you're going to be listening to/composing with, your mind will be able to let you "hear" more accurately and actively. It even makes listening to music a more enjoyable and engrossing experience.

For those not familiar, Herbie was a prolific session bassist for decades and but is probably most famous for his work on Lou Reed's transformer (e.g. Walk on the Wild Side) and this killer Scott Walker track:

ok guy so im slowly getting it.

if i know major scale and where the degrees of its notes lie on fretboard i can make easly corresponding chords like if i know the 1 degree (root) and i know its A then i can go to a 3rd degree note (if i know major scale) and that will be its III chord and i know its a minor.

So i can make easy progressions that way.

now im figuring out how to solo over those chords. like if its I,ii,iii,IV progression then i should start my note from 1st degree when the I chord is playing ? and then land the note on 2nd degree when it ends or what..
>>
So, I'm looking at getting a new valve head.

For me, versatility is very important, as I play in a few different groups that require different sounds, including jazzy cleans, warm crunch, and high-gain metal riffing.

If possible, an amp with variable power would be useful, to get some decent bedroom tones, but it's not completely necessary. I'd also really like it if it was one of those "lunchbox" sized amps, though I realise that might be asking too much at that point.

Anyone have any ideas?
>>
>>74451776
you can start your solo with any note, just land/accentuate on the chord notes, if you dont want to create tension/dissonance
>>
>>74451856
ok but when do i land it when the chord ends ?

and you mean i can land them on degrees of that chord such as 1,3,5 if its a major chord right ?

Hey man.

No amount of discussing this will make you understand the basics of improvisation. You just have to do it.

Find some basic 12 bar blues backing track on youtube, and play notes from the pentatonic scale.
