The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

lol
Post last week
Lona was mediocre and Kiss Me has only one really good song, which is doubly terrible considering it's a double album. For sure one of my least favorite "classics" by The Cure. They did much better before and after.
Wish I liked Duos for Doris and 0 a little better than I actually did.. oh well
>Keith Rowe & John Tilbury - Duos for Doris
Loved the concept and atmosphere of this album, since this was written 2 days after John Tillbury's mother died. Very unnerving, you can really feel the tension throughout this whole album.. but the best moments was when all this tension was released. An example of this would be at around the 43 minute mark of "Cathnor", you can really hear the frustration. We can never beat death, and there's nothing we can do about it. We'll never truly understand it either. After they get all the frustration and anger out of their system, the music returns to it's unsettling but quiet atmosphere. I enjoyed this atmosphere, but honestly I wish more of the whole album would be like those intense moments, since moments like these lasted very briefly, but were absolutely stunning. Although I liked how anxious the quieter parts were, I became a little bored by them.
3.5/5
>Fridolin Blumer - Camping; Cafe Bar
Most of this was just aimless plucking at the cello, a sound/ instrument which I'm not too much a fan of. Kind of good as background music though.
2.5/5
>青葉市子 [Ichiko Aoba] - 0
So comfy, so warm. I really liked her raspy melancholic voice. Didn't quite fall in love, but I do understand why so many people worship this. "i am POD (0%)" best track.
3.5/5
>Spiral Tribe - Respect To The Hardcore Mother Earth!
Yeah I guess freetekno isn't my thing. This just felt like bottom of the barrel electronic. Wasn't fun, which I think is kind of the point of it.

Some tracks are going the other way round (Jesus Christ what a mess MY KZ, UR BF is) but Photoshop Handsome is my jam. Have you heard Arc yet? It's their best IMO.
>>73278324
I like Arc a lot at first, but a few select tracks on it waned on me a bit like Feet for Hands and Undrowned. Still really good, of course. Awe / Arc, all the singles, even The Peaks are really great.
I can understand the irritation for MY KZ, UR BF-- it really shows the band at their least developed. Tracks like Qwerty Finger are an exception: it took a while for the end of that song to really click with me, but the bridge before the outro always gives me goosebumps.

amazing tune desu
dug the last track a lot
this went wrong for various reasons
>italian is a bad language for rapping
>the emcee isnt even that good to begin with
>it's a fucking collab between an italian rapper and a drone metal band
this would've been quite a good drone album if it weren't for the unnecessary rapping and the attempts to sort of lay a beat over the guitar and bass feedback? it doesn't sound bad per se, it just feels strange. then again, a mashup like this one would be very hard to pull off.
luckily nadja seem to have a very big discography so at least their efforts weren't wasted. the last ten minutes of the album where the italian finally shuts up are actually really good, so maybe i should dig into them.

Some thoughts:
Incredible String Band - The Hangman's Daughter
Incredible is right, this is a great album, A Very Cellular Song and Swift as the Wind are two of the greatest songs I've ever heard. Apparently these guys went all Scientology-y later in their career, which I can kind of picture because they sound like major free-livin, free-lovin hippies in that fried off their tits way that only LSD can illicit, not that this is a bad thing, it makes for tremendously imaginative songwriting. Also I can see where Animal Collective got their acapella influences from. This was a therapeutic listen, I needed this in my life right about this point.
Robbie Basho - The Falconer's Arm
Phenomenal, great, if you aren't convinced from Visions of the Country that Basho is a great guitarist, this confirms it without a shadow of a doubt. There's such a richness in tone here, it's great. Ditto for the above about it being a therapeutic listen.
Fleet Foxes - Crack-Up
They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder, this is true for this album. I've never really been into Fleet Foxes that much, but this was great, they've really refined their sound into something workable, you have a greater sense of sonic literacy from this.
Not much left on this thang, gibe recs for the next chart 100 spots give or take

Jimmy Jazz - 5.33
>Autechre - Oversteps
Most of this is the typical bleeps I expect from Autechre, done a bit better, however the ambient techno elements and parts are where it really stands out, known(1) is such a good track.
6+/11
>The Motifs - Cross Paths
It's fine indie twee-pop, does nothing at all badly but there's nothing I'm interested in here.
5+/11
>Lotic - Heterocetera
It's typical grime; I've honestly forgotten what this album even sounded like other than the word "grime".
5-/11
Why did all the Autechre I've previously heard have to be from their bad albums, besides Confield.
nyarl next.
tricot - 3 (2017)
>math rock, indie rock
The most fully realized effort by this band so far, but it's still got an over-emphasis on J-pop stylings that I can't get behind. It opens off with an absolutely furious post-hardcore track, but it mellows out significantly as it goes on. The basic sound of the album is nice, but too light and somewhat repetitive, it doesn't hold a candle to what the opener teases. Instrumentally it's really damn impressive, the drumming especially, but the wonderful, technical instrumentation ocasionally seems wasted on the poppier tracks. Still, their best yet.
2.5+
Natalia Lafourcade - Musas (2017)
>nueva canción latinoamericana, mexican folk music
Here, Lafourcade sheds her modern, westernized pop leanings that plagued Hasta la raiz and goes for a straight-up, simple folk record. It is very simple, sometimes too self-effacing, but it's so damned pleasant and well done. Lafourcade's voice is exceptional, and the sparse arrangements here are lovely. One of my new favorites of the year.

>Regis - Adolescence: The Complete Recordings 1994-2001
Actually really surprised how much I liked this. At first I didn't really get it, but then after letting myself just let it play and not intensely focusing on it, I loved it. Very hypnotic, almost borderline psychedelic. If I ever get a desk job, I could see myself having this on repeat for the entire day.

>Slowdive - Souvlaki
>male vocals in shoegaze
It's just okay save for three really great tracks that are able to properly harness the wall of sound: Souvlaki Space Station, When The Sun Hits, and Melon Yellow. Souvlaki Space Station is far and away the highlight of this album. I don't care for the acoustic songs at all.
>Faust - Faust
Still hasn't quite clicked for me though I have grown an appreciation for the noisy bits now. There are many parts either I don't get or don't enjoy. It's weird, but it's not loud or bombastic enough for me I guess. Meadow Meal is great.
>Negativland - Escape From Noise
The humor is extremely hit or miss. A lot of it is honestly just annoying, but that is what I believe the record set out to do after all. Some of the skeletal music bits are kinda interesting but are left unexplored since the album is more concerned with humorous sound collage. Not for me, but I got a kick out of The Playboy Channel and Time Zones.
>Robbie Basho - Visions of the Country
God damn his voice is just arrestingly beautiful. Paired with acoustic noodling and and a nice piano change-up later on makes for a fantastic album. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Parson Sound - s/t
Yeah this is some pretty crazy shit for 1967, some clear jazz and world music influences all over this album. If these guys had released a studio album along with their live stuff they would have been cult classics for sure. Sometimes it just devolves into noise being led by a sax, and that’s alright. Other times it turns into somewhat eerie drones. Some tracks are a little too long and sound too similar to others. Recording quality is ass.

>Hanako-san - Red Toilet
incredible hardcore, great mariko gouto like vocals. Filler is awful, pop songs don't fit
8.5+/10
>Zürcher Aufnahmen
yeah this pretty good, loved the way the cello combined with the high pitched noises and the drones. Wouldve been better if the cello was the leading star
7/10
>Dj Vibes and Wishdokta - Freeaneazy
great jungle, very professional breaks and good use of samples. The basslines and the pads sound outdated as fuck, maybe a bit too oldskool for me
7-/10
only review that got saved
>Fridolin Blumer - Camping: Café Bar
i actually begged zane to give this another listen. Fridolin Blumer brings up some of the finest solo playing made on Cello. While on the outside the improvisations presented here seem to be pointless and dull, the incredible appreciation for silence, the near perfect playing and the big range of sounds created by Fridolin make this one of the best solo material out there. I think the intendity of the playing comes from the way you listen to the album. If you are expectant, always waiting for what is going to happen next, always on the edge like i was, then you might be able to catch how good this is. Not to say zane didn't properly listen to it but i think that this requires some higher concentration. However i do admit that i would've loved if there were at least one other instrument, like a drum or a vocalist. Would have added a lot of spice to it.
8+/10
>hentai: the album
i don't know, it's okay. i dislike the vocals, especially the shrieky stuff, they kind of ruin the relatively interesting jazz punk thing going on by distracting from the interplay of the respective elements of fusion and punk. there are some good songs (5拍子 is great) but for the most part i'm not too keen on it.
>xiu xiu - a promise
the noisy elements of this album are not abrasive solely for abrasion's sake; they're melodic and emotional, articulating the album's dark and anxious atmosphere while remaining engaging and legitimately beautiful. stewart's charisma and emotiveness is powerful, and the songwriting is wonderful in its ability to change swiftly between a disregard for convention and a reverence for heart-wrenching beauty. i'll probably bump this score up in the future.

松岡直也 - 夏の旅
"hurricane" by dylan is a real slammer of a tune
Joey Bada$$ - All-Amerikkkan Bada$$ (2017)
>east coast hip hop, conscious hip hop
I haven't listened to another full project of this guy's, but the tracks I've heard off 1999 and B4.DA.$$ are some cool, throwback boom bap/jazz rap. The first track off this record promises more of the same, but again and again it plays into a lot of the stereotypical, generic sounds of 2010s pop and trap rap. There are definitely some great tracks here, the ScHoolboy Q-featuring "Rockabye Baby" being a big highlight, and some of the hooks and most of Bada$$' verses are nice, but the production is so overdone and sterile. Like a trendier To Pimp a Butterfly without half of the grit and a less gripping, charismatic rapper.

>death's dynamic shroud - I'll Try Living Like This (2015)
This album is all over the place in a good way. It blends the slowed down pop samples amazingly well with both repetitive drone and chaotic glitch elements. What impressed me the most was the seamless transitions between radically different sections of the music. Most of the songs dramatically changed their sound at least once or twice and for the most part they all somehow flowed perfectly into each other. There were a couple annoying vocal samples that were used, but the songs morphed around them to create a kind of dysphoric groove that was actually really sick. A great overall album with lots of neat ideas that don't outstay their welcome. [7/10]

Alan Vega / Martin Rev - Suicide (1980)
>synthpop, synth punk
It's incredibly how much the involvement of Ric Ocasek amps up the poppiness of Suicide's sound. Their debut might have had some very slight pop elements here and there, but the overwhelmingly dark and brooding soundscapes very obviously overpowered those elements. Here, these soundscapes are replaced by bubbly, robotic, overtly poppy synth lines and slight disco elements. Vega's vocals are just as schizoid, and Rev's synth work is still minimalist as always, but these elements are mostly toned down. The actual pop is really nice, ultra-danceable but still dark and ominous. When the album goes back to the style of their debut is when it takes a turn. I love their debut to death, but the attempts at that style here seem forced and lazy, while the poppy songs seem lively and passionate. Their debut is definitely better, but this isn't a slouch at all.

大貫妙子 - Sunshower (1977)
>city pop
A bright, sunny, cheesy city pop album, what else is there to say? I can't get into this genre for the life of me, but the funk elements here make it pretty solid. These funk elements are obviously super plastic, but they add a nice dynamic, and they're a good refuge from the shitty, maudlin ballads that plague this album, like so many other city pop albums. One of the better albums I've heard in the genre, but that's faint praise coming from me.

>Pale Cocoon - Cocoon
this is definitely ethereal. i really liked the contrast of the songs on here, and how its kind of half and half on very light, pretty songs and more darker songs. the vocals fit in very nicely, and the last song was awesome. i really liked it, i think it may grow on me in the future.
3.5-
>UGK - Ridin Dirty
Just nonstop southern slappers. Its so dirty, so soulful, so much fun, what else can I say? RIP Pimp C

>Camp Lo - Uptown Saturday Night
yup, this 100% deserves the amount of praise it gets on here. its like what i always wanted atcq to be. the beats on here are spectacular, and the MCing is spot on. it was just so much fun, i was smiling almost the whole time.
4.0-
>Big Moe - City of Syrup
I have to agree with one of the rym comments that this release is held back by the sheer amount of guest features on it. If it were just Big Moe, singing over those cheesy MIDI beats with a couple features here and there, it would be spectacular. Also, it does run on a bit too long, and idk if thats because of the skits or the length of some of the songs. Still, City of Syrup and Payin Dues are fantastic songs.
3.0+
>Basic Channel - BCD
God damn it, I really fell for the Basic Channel meme. I can't help it, this shit is so good. While BCD-2 I would say is a bit more "chaotic" (probably not the right word, but its what comes to mind), BCD focuses a lot more on the sheer atmosphere and density of the tracks. Every single song is so easy to just get lost in. Songs like Quadrant Dub are just incredible cozy. Meanwhile, there's a few tracks on here I would consider a bit experimental, like Mutism, which really stuck out to me as a song I've genuinely never heard anything like before in my life. So, yeah, Basic Channel is good. Obviously.

Not terribly surprised by Yarn and Mykhailo, ominous mystery folk and middle aged Ukrainian men singing their hearts out in the form of Cossack stories set to hurdy gurdy aren't everyone's thing.
Try revisiting Kollezhskiy Asessor sometime, it's a hard album to wrap your head around. If it ever "clicks", make sure to listen to their album "Sex Bomben Auf Engelland", it's probably the best rock album recorded in the aughts.

What're the most peaceful albums /daily/ can recommend? As cheesy as it sounds, one of my biggest goals lately has been to become a more peaceful person. I've never been aggressive or anything but I think it’s a good step. And a decent chunk of the music I've heard in the past month or so is aggressive in one way or the other, I struggle to find more calming stuff.
I've heard All Things Must Pass a fair amount recently and it strikes me as a perfect example of something I'm looking for. A little spiritual but not overly so and mellow. Not a good description but I'm looking more for a mood than a certain style of music if that makes sense.
Anyway not to turn this into /blog/ but any help /daily/?

The Mausoleums - Blackened Fawns Cleanse the Earth With Fire (2008)
>psychedelic rock, noise pop, noise rock, atmospheric black metal
Less the ultra-cool combination of genres these tags would have you believe it is, more a scattershot collection of ideas that rarely manages to produce anything more substantial than a half-baked wall of noise. It's cool, I can't deny that, especially when there's more of an emphasis on structure over noise, but the noise is lame, and the structured tracks are little more than simply aesthetically cool. A decent experiment that fails to be anything more than just that.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Murder of the Universe (2017)
>psychedelic rock, spoken word, garage rock
King Gizz' best work yet, a thrilling, ultra-fun garage rock record with some funny, entertaining stories keeping the whole thing together. Their garage rock still sounds way too thin, just like it does on Nonagon Infinity and Flying Microtonal Banana, but they add a whole load of heavy psych influnce that makes their sound a lot heavier and more full-bodied. The spoken word is sometimes distracting, sometimes entertaining, but the text-to-speech performance for the Han-Tyumi character is really funny, and Han-Tyumi's section is by far the album's best. Gotta say, I'm pretty pleasantly surprised by this. I've always liked what KG I've heard, but this one I nearly love.
3.0
Mike Oldfield - Return to Ommadawn (2017)
>progressive rock, progressive folk
Absolutely hilarious, overbearingly cheesy shit, but admittedly well-done. Sure, the original Ommadawn is totally cheesy too, but there's still a lot of effortless beauty underneath the cheese, this is just cheese piled on top of cheese piled on top of corn. Oldfield's instrumental prowess hasn't gone down at all with his age, but his ability to craft an interesting record sure has. Some of the acoustic sections are kinda pretty, but they're punctuated by periods of absolutely nothing that go on forever. Just a boring, plodding record.

indie rock is just yacht rock revival this band proves it
Silver Jews - Starlite Walker (1994)
>indie rock
A decent, sloppy little indie record. The rockier sections are quite spotty, like a looser, not as good version of Pavement, but the more country-fried tracks are quite good, super comfy and homely. Doesn't hold a candle to American Water, not even close, but it's a nice, welcoming album nonetheless.

Beat Konducta - Vol. 5: Dil Cosby Suite (2008)
>instrumental hip hop, west coast hip hop
Madlib's tribute to Dilla is a nice homage to the frantic, fast-paced style of Donuts, even if it's not pulled off with the same finesse. The closer is really wonderful, and I love the usage of samples from Donuts, like the siren from "Workinonit", but this can sometimes feel a bit too scattered and loose. That does somewhat add to the appeal of this, and the emotion does often shine through the low-key beats.

don't wait for me
i don't think i can acquire the album for today in a reasonable amount of time
im not even a quarter of the way through this chart and its already fucking incredible
>Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
no
memes aside, its just an album full of the classic Zappa jams that were sprinkled in the Mothers albums and made them all so good, so how could I not like this?
3.5
>Laurie Anderson - Big Science
one of the most interesting, weird, inviting, prettiest albums i've come across. i've found that most art pop is incredibly hit or miss with me, and this one nails it. it creates an awesome atmosphere and narrative, offers very quirky pop melodies and ideas, and above all else, its just fun to listen to. i loved it.
4.0-
>Ground-Zero - Plays Standards
WOO this fucking rocked man. although i still love the sound experiments on Ver 1.28 more, this offers much more of Ground-Zero's wacky, energetic, Zorne-esque prog, and its just a blast to listen to. Like, this rocks so fucking hard. The turntable influence is awesome, the jazz influence is awesome, theres great noise, lots of different instruments, just classic Ground-Zero. This'll probably get raised in the near future.
3.5+
what next on this awesome chart eh
>>73306601

Any albums that you can't figure out how to rate because they're so unique/alien that you can't figure out how they compare to anything else?

Super duper stuff only:

So you can't even tell if you like it or not?
>>73307963
yes
>>73307987
I think ive only run into that problem twice, and usually I like the albums that manage to be unique
What album is it
>>73303632
I think you'll dig Absolutely Free being a kind of proto-spork + Mother of All Saints for the same reason otherwise Forca Bruta + Freak Out probably won't be for you I'm guessing.
>>73306601
Buddyboy give that Minor Bread a spin

>Wild Tracks
Eh this is kinda what a field recording album shouldn't be imo. It adds nothing to the actual sound, no atmosphere is created with them, I don't know, I just don't want to listen to a bee and a helicopter for 4 minutes.
>Desert Music
Very nice stuff, actually enjoyed it more than 18 musicians. Very meditative with gentle sounds that can get quite freaky sometimes.
>Cerebral Caverns
Absolutely beautiful, a lot of unconventional instruments for jazz (some sort of flute and i think cello?) but they're all incorporated wonderfully; the bass is an absolute stand-out.
>Cluster II
Nice krautrock, kind of what I'd expected after hearing related projects, but this one didn't quite capture the ambiance I was hoping for.
>Like a Duck to Water
The first track is very bad, with chiptune-ish sounds. The second tracks gets a lot better and has some danceable stuff going on even, but the third track kind of falls of again, mainly because it's just boring.
>Jason Kahn | Tomas Korber | Christian Weber - Zürcher Aufnahmen
Interesting EAI, not very enjoyable but definitely decent. Good atmosphere.
3/5
>[unknown artist] - Yirat HaShem
Very spooky and violent.. dark religious stuff like this has always intrigued me. Also this may be the best album art in existence, literally.
3.5/5
>Gospel - The Moon is a Dead World
Amazing. Absolutely phenomenal instrumentation, particularly the drums. Everything I want in a post-hardcore album, if you can even call it that. The vocals were also great. Really loved how passionate and complex it all was.. I'll definitely be listening to this for a while.
4.5/5
>DJ Ravemaster Vibes & Wishdokta - Freeaneazy
Very fun.. i've always been a fan of somewhat lo-fi party stuff like this. Didn't quite hit the 4/5 mark though.
3.5/5

>Also this may be the best album art in existence
it's a contender.
>>73309492
Super curious on what y'all will think about either/or and BWJ
I'm gonna actually try and write (quick) reviews for most of these.
>Will Guthrie - People Pleaser
I think this is actually my first foray into EAI, and surprisingly I was just about floored by this. I was expecting difficult, abrasive sine waves and static screeches, but what I got was a guy just having some fun with his drum set and electronics. His playing is very expressive and emotive which was not what I was expecting with the EAI tag. A few of the more ambient tracks didn't do much for me, but the upbeat and manic drum-centered tracks blew me away. And luckily, those tracks took up a majority of the LP. I can't really compare this to other EAI releases so it is kinda hard to rate, but this is probably my favorite album of the year I've heard so far. A quick but very entertaining listen.
8/10
>xbox spends 10 minutes talking about the technical specs of the new console
>first game they show is a racing game
>>73309996
they're legit just showcasing a sportscar now.
>>73309996
pardon my ignorance but what's the issue with that
>>73310006
I'm baffled. Are car games this popular? How much money do they make? I thought it was niche but every conference panders to them so hard.
>>73309996
>>73310006
>That soulless shilling from the race car drivers
Well, at least it's not EA.
>>73310019
you don't need too much power for a racing game.
racing games are also kinda boring to watch, making them a shitty choice if you want to show off your 4k next gen graphics.
>>73310025
they brought on two racecar drivers to play the game now. not even like esports people. just two chicks who drive cars.
>>73310025
There's not a lot of them, but they spend a LOT of money. They appeal to the upper middle class engineer types who are into cars but can't afford a 6 figure sports car, but can spend $200 a year on one game.
can someone hurry up and make a new thread i have an important announcement to make
>actually watching e3
come on guys
>>73310054
I agree. While racing games have greatly declined in popularity, for some reason they have always been a staple for showcasing consoles.
they're gonna be unveiling 42 games
AKA 40 indie cames crammed into some shitty compilation and 2 halo spinoffs
>>73310134
i watch it for the meme.

you haven't experienced the complete Quadrant Dub tho
i actually am not quite a fan of the BCD thing because they cut down all songs, you should listen to the entire single desu.
The more you listen to that single, the better you appreciate it. I recommend smoking weed and listening to it
