The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Hey /daily/, I'm interested in knowing how you guys usually schedule what new albums you listen to. Like do you listen an album from a certain chart, or just go in a random order of sorts or what? I have a massive clutter of artists on my cue that is piling up and I want to know how do you guys sort that out usually.

Quick review while I try to write my thoughts on Closing Time for the other chart. Been listening to some records I picked up a bit ago but never got around to. Why I got a few of these is beyond me.

Springsteen - The River

I’ve become a huge Springsteen fan over the past year, diving into his music has been a treat. Dude has an amazing voice and something about his music just works for me. He blends some elements that shouldn’t work well together in a manner that sounds fantastic.

Overall, I really dig this but shit it's long.

What makes it work though is it's relative variety. It’s Springsteen so you basically know the two or three styles of songs he’s gonna throw at you but he mixes it up a fair amount. At first, I was hoping this would be a somber expansion of Darkness but on double albums I think it’s better to shoot for variety. Springsteen has rockier tracks, slow burning ballads and emotional cuts all mashed in. The result is way too scattered but somehow despite this variety, it comes across as consistent. The feel and emotion is basically the same throughout the tracks, he just seems to put a lot of passion into his music.

Biggest downside is this doesn’t seem to have many standouts. Side 1 is infinitely better because of this, with “Jackson Cage”, “Independence Day” and of course “Hungry Heart” as huge standouts. Side 2 seems to have more rock tracks which I think are ok in comparison and a few ballads that just seem to stretch on far too long. None of Side 2 pops out in any way and honestly, around 4 or 5 songs could’ve been cut.

Usually, I’d critique an album this overly long but I appreciate the way Springsteen is able to maintain such a unique feel despite the variety. I barely felt myself getting bored by this (took me until the 9 minute ballad “Drive All Night) which is rare in albums this long. Maybe not as ambitious as I'd hoped but I’ll give him credit because I’m honestly pretty biased.

I need to explore more Tom Waits man.

Tom Waits - Closing Time
>Piano Blues

When I first heard about Tom Waits, this is the style I was picturing. It touches on a lot of the lonely, hopeless and sentimental feelings I’ve come to enjoy from Springsteen. Many of the tracks on here are similarly bluesy and dark, with little guitar and piano riffs kind of tying together the emotions. Waits’ voice on here is incredible. I’ll give him credit for his experimental albums like Rain Dogs and Bone Machine but this is a perfect fit for his sound. Waits sounds like he’s about to cry any moment, he’s just on the brink of collapse during some of these tracks.

Subtle instrumental touches help match Waits’ emotions, with muted trumpet (fantastic by the way) popping up on “Virginia Avenue” and “Midnight Lullaby”. It reminds me a lot of Songs of Leonard Cohen in that way, the minimal instrumentation just pushes this to another level. Would’ve been easy to dress up these songs with layers of instrumentals or just lots of “touching” piano but Waits makes all the right decisions. Everything feels understated yet purposeful in that manner, even when strings come in on tracks like “Martha”.

Overall, this manages to capture a mood quite well. Sounds exactly like the album cover, just sullen and sentimental. I feel like half of these songs could be featured at the end of a sappy movie, as the protagonist rolls out of bed in the middle of the night to call their long lost love or a relative they haven’t talked to in 15 years. There’s a layer of that cliche and cheesiness somewhere in here, as Waits plays the “lonesome piano player” stereotype all throughout. But it’s a sound he pulls off damn well and one I really loved.

I could see this growing into a personal favorite.

New sufjan has a lot of good "moments" but nothing really substantial that justifies it going on for 75 minutes. The first and last songs were the only ones that really that felt fulfilling. It might technically be a "collaboration" but, like, why? There wasn't anything achieved here that he hasn't done before (and better, I might add) by himself. Idk it just feels super overblown and prog-esque without much substance in between the great moments. I think the live bootleg would actually be much better, had the quality been as good as the studio album. Unless you're a huge sufjan fan I can't say I can highly rec this.

Mercury is legit one of the best pop songs of the year imo though. Definitely a standout moment, though the ending is very lackluster.

Awkward surfy post punk. I haven’t listened to The Modern Dance in a while but I think I liked it more than this.

KINO - s/t (Black Album)
This is less clammy than other post punk bands, but also more repetitive I’d say. I don’t particularly care for Tsoi’s singing. Songs go on too long.

David Bowie - Station to Station
Thin White Duke Bowie is one of my least favorite eras. The title track is nice, the rest fails to measure up to his previous and future work and or doesn't stand out from it.

>World’s End Girlfriend - Seven Idiots

Very very detailed and fun electronically tinged experimental rock. Sort of in between Enjoy your Rabbit and Disco Volante. There are some very pretty parts as well, sounding like a sort of beautiful MIDI soup. My only gripe with it is that it’s f u c k i n g l o n g and unlike a lot of people I prefer for overly long albums to have LESS content rather than so much that it’s just tiring. An 78 minute ambient album is just fine, this album overstays it’s welcome. It still tries very very hard to remain fresh throughout though.

7/10

>The Smiths - Hatful of Hollow

This very very quickly became background noise for me, this is extremely basic pop rock and I’m pretty much incompatible with it overall. No atmosphere, just twangy hooks. Good hooks though, I’d play it at a party.

5/10

I mean, reading Ulysses with The Odyssey in mind is kind of missing the point. What's the point in blank parallelism, I mean, it's there, but you sort of actually have to engage with Joyce's original ideas. (in short, by all means, read The Odyssey, but it's not really necessary to understanding Ulysses, just read the Wikipedia page yo).

Also nice Browning, that book is fantastic history. Have you read Arendt's Eichmann in Jerusalem

I haven't been listening to very much music lately, probably because of the whole secondhand CDs thing: I bought a shitton of CDs I realize now I don't actually want to listen to. So now I made of chart of music that I do want to listen to, featuring /mu/core, /daily/core, 2 discographies I need to finish and a few bleeps to round it off.

>The Avalanches - Since I left you
Solid album, what I like most is how detailed and meticulous it is. Songwriting and sound design is great. For whatever reason, has a lot of strange transition tracks that don't really do anything, at all: Stay Another Season, Avalanche Rock, Pablo's Cruise. Now, I like when songs transition seamlessly, but Since I Left you a lot of times sacrifices too much to make it happen, with awkward outros and the previously mentioned pointless transition tracks. Also, so many of the songs here find a spot it likes and is content remaining mostly static, not really aspiring to do any mind-blowing things. As a result, despite supposedly 3500 samples, Since I Left You leaves a lot to be desired. Still, the songwriting (when it's not trying to transition into a different track) is fantastic, and all the samples make for this a very detailed album worthy of a lot of listens. Highlights are Radio, Electricity and of course, Frontier Psychiatrist. 3/5

Who knows? Maybe the album will prove me wrong but most of the shit I heard from 50 is awful.

Hell sometimes opinions of albums I use to think were weak on these charts got bumped up so maybe that's the case again.

Either way. Not skipping.

Thundercat - Drunk (2017)
>neo-soul, psychedelic, funktronica

A decent record that's mostly decent because of how little it takes itself seriously. This album is really effortlessly goofy, some of the songs are so over-the-top and cheesy that you can't help but love them, like "Tokyo" and "Friendzone". Some of the humor is a bit more tongue-in-cheek, like the '80s-worshipping, Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins-featuring "Show Me the Way", and this combines with the more blatant humor to make for a really silly record. The album's downsides lie in the actual music, and the structure of the album itself. I have the same issue with this that I have with You're Dead, it goes for a short vignette style that fails, little ideas for songs never move beyond these slight ideas and the ones that do often seem repetitive. It's fun, and very impressive musically (duh), but too scatter-brained and obviously more focused on humor and technicality more than anything else.

2.5-

Gas - Narkopop (2017)
>ambient, ambient techno

It's been a long time since I've given listen to Pop, but I can safely say I like this more. The general criticism of this album's one-note, repetitive nature is very legitimate, but it's a damn Gas album, is anybody really surprised that this is slow-burning and subtle? The textures are very beautiful, they fit the cover perfectly and they work as a great antithesis to Pop, dark and moody instead of vibrant and natural. Some tracks drag, sure, but they drag in a purposeful, deliberate manner, and they make for one hell of a cool album.

Forest Swords - Compassion (2017)
>ambient dub, downtempo

The first track promises a thumping, tribal experience that never really comes to fruition. Sound design is this album's forte, Barnes creates dense, vivid soundscapes but doesn't do anything with them. The lack of any real originality also hurts the record, it sounds like hundreds of other artists doing the same kind of thing (The Haxan Cloak, Raime). That being said, it is a pretty solid record. The production is outstanding (listen on headphones, dear god), and the tracks are arranged decently, albeit in a rather one-note manner.

2.5+

Jlin - Black Origami (2017)
>footwork

Totally non-danceable footwork, which entirely negates the point of footwork. A lot of this really strikes me as the token footwork album to like of the year, replacing the genres innate danceability with experimental elements that don't work and whole lot of shoe-horned wonky-style production. The percussion is the album's saving grace, and even it seems a bit too far up its own ass at times. Just listen to DJ Rashad or Patrice & Friends, I don't get the appeal of this at all.

very true. footwork isn't exactly an album genre anyway.

>>73317194
I could see 2/3 of those tracks being "filler" with the high exception of Stay Another Season. Imo it's a fantastic transition/variation track honestly I like it more than the title song. I would also disagree that it's largely fade-ins fade-outs, as in most parts you could easily chop off the last half of one track and attach it to the first half of another and you'd have another complete track. The time segments are very arbitrary with a few notable exceptions. Otherwise 100% good review

Excite to hear opinions on literally anything else there. <3
>>
>>73317668
just because its not danceable doesn't mean its bad....? maybe its something more than just a cookie cutter footwork track. we are in a new generation of dance music. i think what u said is sorta silly! with that said, i'm not a fan of Jlin, i respect her creativity especially with percussive sounds but the tracks overal don't really do anything for me.
>>
>>73318245
my criticism was really lousy, especially since Darren Keen's It's Never Too Late to Say You're Welcome is one of my favorites of the year so far, but a lot of the non-danceable elements on Black Origami just don't work well at all, I guess. nothing about the experimental elements flows naturally, save for the percussion.

Mark Fry - Dreaming With Alice (1972)
>psychedelic folk, singer/songwriter

The standalone tracks are incredible, but the whole melody of the title track is sequenced really poorly, and the song doesn't even seem that great to begin with. After every standalone track, a single verse from the title track place. It's a bafflingly odd layout, and instead of seeming fresh while keeping the overarching concept in place, it's a total failed experiment. I can't heap enough praise onto the standalone tracks though, "The Witch" especially. Totally acid-fried folk that still retains a melodic component, it's wonderful.

2.5+

Flower-Corsano Duo - The Radiant Mirror (2006)
>free improvisation

Badass, fast-paced free improv with a heavy noise rock edge. It pretty much does the same thing over and over for forty minutes, but it does it insanely well, and both Flower and Corsano turn in exceptional performances. Corsano is slowly becoming one of my favorite drummers, dude always does great work.

Good-day /daily/, I've got cracking on this backlog now, starting by going through the CD's I own that I've yet to listen to, such albums there would include Graceland, Odelay, Hex Enduction Hour and the following that I've now listened to and are going to listen to several times (will go through other albums in their discographies once a time interval opens up);

>DJ Shadow - Endtroducing... I can see how this album is considered so influential, from what I've heard its essentially low-fi hip-hop before the fact given the heavy employment of samples and crackly audio quality. That being said it leaves room to innovate and create dreamy soundscapes on tracks such as Transmission 2 and Napalm Brain/ Scatter Brain, both of which were highly palatable. That being said the album is certainly one of the more consistent on the /mu/core chart and I look forward to listening to it far more in the future.
>Electric Wizard - Dopethrone. I've only just started listening to this so I'll post my thoughts later, though I'm on track 3 right now and I love the sludgy distortion on the guitars/ bass. I can see why this is regarded as being one of the heaviest records of all time. Funeralopolis blew my mind.
>Kyuss - Welcome To Sky Valley. This was far less claustrophobic than I expected from the stoner rock genre, in fact it was very loose and pleasant to listen to. Quite liked the track Space Cadet which provided breathing space in-between the walls of sound employed with a considerably faster tempo than can be seen from other bands of the sub-genre. Certainly more engaging than most albums without being particularly cheesy or cringe-inducing in a way which many metal albums suffer from (though I've no idea what the skit at the last two minutes of Lick Doo was supposed to be, didn't really taint the experience though).

i don't think there's many things in the critical vocabulary that could be applied as a devastating critique against Rumours, it pretty much embodies "lowest common denominator." That means yeah, i actually found some things to like in it. There's enough detail and layer moving through the mix to keep it engaging and from feeling aimless despite the simplicity in terms of rhythm and architecture, you know, the same reason i love Art Angels. Thing is, i just don't connect with this style nearly as much and i know that's stupid, that's just how you're socialized but (as a side effect of pandering to everybody) this has none of what makes me passionate about the music i'm passionate about, so i don't know. I'll put it this way: it sounds like all the players are sitting down. It sounds like something nyar would be really into.
I'm almost certain this is gonna end up being a grower though, it's memorable enough, there's enough variety within just 12 tracks to contradict me here and there, and like i said, i think it's mostly an issue of disconnect. But yeah i get it this is why punk was totally necessary.

coming off of this it'd be convenient to go straight to Forca Bruta, i guess
look i swear i dont just hate laid-back music okay
all to its favor, it doesn't have the same airtight production as Rumours and his vocal performance is fittingly loose and impulsive as well. it's equally repetitious but these ostinati definitely have more swing to them so i don't really mind. those sweeping strings are such damn cliches but i don't mind them either
i feel like the tracklist always pairs the two songs with the most similar vibe or groove together (except for the uptempo title track) so it's on one hand smooth and on the other, pretty samey. actually yeah vibe, it's pretty much the same throughout the whole thing, that usually brings down an album for me
but honestly, for better or worse, i could only see myself listening to this casually in the background which wouldn't work nearly as well if he took you on a wide-ranging emotional rollercoaster

>Keith Jarrett - The Survivor's Suite
Sometimes I wish musicians would fuck right off with hellishly long, drawn out, meandering introductive fuckwittery. Made a terrible first impression. However!

After 5 minutes or so, when the body of the music starts to become more full, the rhythm rises and Keith's piano finally enters, this album pull together. When it stands tall, it carries itself with brightness & brilliance.

Survivor's Suite presents a great variety of musical ideas and tons of shifting harmony to bring the mind alive. The compositions are engaging and dynamic. Overall, this album is dripping with vision and great musucianship.

7+

>Joe Henderson - Inner Urge
Boy, this sure is a mid 1960s jazz album.

Wow, these instrumental performances sure are top notch. Nice drums.

Fuck, I hate albums that I have to read a full list of citations & influences to understand why this music sounds like stale cornbread. Okay, it was interesting enough music for me to actually want to read about it. So at least there's that.

Henderson was working with a nice variety of ideas here, and what he put together is admittedly accomplished. It just feels like this whole album is dragging its heels in the brilliant jungles of Monk, Coltrane and other greats. That is to say, it's not cultivating its own crop.

5

Mr. Jarrett's vision & dynamism overtakes the respectable but ultimately not noteworthy Henderson production.

Mr. Woolite is a victory person in the today time! Rejoice!

In conclusion to Dopethrone it was a great album, loved Mind Transferal especially even if the few minutes of silence annoyed me. Also;

>Morgan Delt - Phase Zero. This is an example of an album that sounds exactly like the cover art. Some folksy psych rock that seemed overly drenched in reverb and didn't really go anywhere after the first two tracks (I Don't Wanna See What's Happening Outside and The System Of 1000 Lies). Still Mssr. Monster gave a nice kick to what is essentially the rock equivalent of low-fi hip-hop.

>Graveyard Productions - The Havoc
Awesome beats, especially the piano stuff.. rapping wasn't that great but it didn't really affect my enjoyment. Perfect amount of lo-fi for what they were trying to achieve.
4/5
>Dave Phillips - The Hermeneutics of Fear of God
Too choppy, which for some albums can be good, but not for this. I just don't think I like my grindcore to be sound collage-y. Regardless, I still enjoyed this a decent amount, because in the end it's still grindcore.
3/5
>Elliott Smith - Either / Or
Didn't love it, but it was definitely comfy and made me want to sleep, which was both a good and a bad thing.
3/5
>Discordance Axis - Jouhou
I actually liked this a lot more than The Inalienable Dreamless.. which apparently is a contrarian opinion, I guess I need to relisten to TIS. This was amazing.. perfect vocals, perfect drummiung. "Nikola Tesla" in particular was insane, I wish they would do more harsh noise like this.

Starting off fairly strong.

>Richard Dawson - Peasant
This was a lot to take in on first listen, but I love this style of avant-folk. The instrumentation was lush and it had a great atmosphere. I think I need to give this a couple more listens but it's an AOTY contender so far.
8/10

>Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked at Me
Can't say I was particularly a fan. This stripped-down indie folk stuff is not for me in the first place, and the actual songwriting was nothing particularly special. Sure the lyrics are hard-hitting but the rest was too gosh darn uninteresting to return to.

At Rosedale United.jpg

Oh and here's a really good album would rec

The Element Choir - At Rosedale United (2010)
>Choir, Free Improv
Free improvisation between a Casavant pipe organ, viola, violin, trumpet, drum set, and 50-voice choir. The choir is mostly managed by a conductor (Christine Duncan) who is doing most of the improvising, though she often does turn the 50-voice monster loose. It's also unclear from the description on Barnyard Records just how the choir is conducted. It's implied, and I think it can even be heard, that some parts of the choir are selectively given more autonomy than others. The balance (or mixing?--Whatever) is also really impressive. With so many moving parts, it's surprising that the trumpet, violin, and viola have a fighting chance at being heard alongside a massive pipe organ and a 50-voice choir and all.

And the result of the improvisation here is remarkably varied: at times austere chamber music, P. Bradfield-level instrumental sadomasochism, or epic church choir (god bless that pipe organ), at times swinging big band jazz ensemble, at other times; Meredith Monk-like gibberish and playful call-and-response, and others still; mind-shattering thunderous "Requiem"-esque cacophany. (Speaking of which, although this is free improv and not deliberately micropolyphonic composition [or whatever Ligeti was on about], I would highly recommend this to fans of "Requiem.") It's truly impressive how much modern music is encompassed in one two-session improvisation recording. Almost as impressive is how seemlessly the ensemble moves from style to style. While I'm sure this fluid transitioning must take immense skill (ringmaster and "conductor" Christine Duncan had been performing in her family's gospel show since the age of five, recorded her first album of her own gospel tunes at age 15, and has been exploring experimental music ever since), this ensemble makes its beauty sound effortless.

Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water (1970)
>folk rock, singer/songwriter, pop rock

Save for the slight quality dip between Sounds of Silence and Parsely, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, S&G definitely do get better with every release, and this is their most fully realized, best work. Sure, it's still a really wussy album that has some upbeat tracks that fit really poorly with the slow-burning, meditative tracks that make up the bulk of this album, but sometimes soft, wussy music just hits the spot, especially when its as well done as this. The arrangements here are glorious, from the baroque pop influenced title track to "The Boxer", booming snare drum and all, and the vocals are obviously spectacular. It's a continuation of Bookends in that they utilize the studio to its fullest potential, but here they benefit from an increase in songwriting quality. S&G generally get a bad rep, especially around these parts, but this is their best album and one of the finest folk rock albums around.

Apryl Fool - Apryl Fool (1969)
>psychedelic rock

Basic bluesy psych rock with little to no edge to be found. Some songs do absolutely rip, like the opener, but it's obvious that the band does their best work when they stay firmly in psych rock territory, because the blues rock is incopetent at best and straight-up bad at worst. Some pretty solid tracks that present a more experimental, primitive edge to psych rock, but the blues rock is too poor to make for anything more than an okay album.

2.0+

Polygon Window - Surfing on Sine Waves (1993)
>IDM, techno

Aphex's fabled lost album is a slightly generic album that still has a lot of the characteristics that make me love the man's music so much. It's definitely in the weaker tier of his work, mainly because I've never really liked it when he does no-frills techno, but it balances a fine line between dance music and ambient and pulls it off quite well. Some of the ambient tracks are a bit lousy, but they're more immobile than anything else, and the techno songs are really quite good. Worth a listen for any fan of RDJ's.
