teehee get it
because /daily/ is dead lol

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

>Arthur Russell - Calling Out of Context
Completely different from World of Echo, which is fine. I like the general atmosphere of it, and I still like the reverb-y vocals, but I guess it's hard to go through this with World of Echo in mind, if that makes any sense. It just didn't capture me and bring me into his world as much. That's Us/Wild Combination is still great, tho.

>Causa Sui - Summer Sessions Vol. 1

What a trip. This thing manages to blend jam band space stoner psychedelic rock into something not just listenable but really damn fun and refreshing. Even the rifftastic grunge bits are charming. I'm a sucker for saxophone and for instrumental gangbang chaos, and this has plenty of both. I expect I'll be playing this at work constantly this summer, and probably breaking out old Grateful Dead and Hawkwind to reconsider as well. 4.0+

Minnie Riperton - Come to My Gardem (1970)
>Pop Soul
Forgettable pop soul with elaborate orchestration. Every song sounded really passionate, but it never really shone through authentically, if that makes any sense. Although (merely) “Expecting” was excellent, this was altogether disappointing, especially after hearing the piercing “Loving You.”

=====Borzoi vs. benji=====

>Regal - Acid is the Answer
>Techno, UK Hard House

This would have been great 20 years ago, in some heated, crowded rave tucked away in a restless city. Boring to hear alone, and very predictable.

4/10

>Ulver - Teachings in Silence
>Dark Ambient, Glitch

The first track: Melodramatic, but that's a given since it's Ulver. Endearing and somewhat comfy, even considering that this is a metal band doing electronic work. A little silly, considering that they straight up sample a hard drive and have a somber piano and a jazz organ(?) at one point. The usage of vocals two thirds into the song was a good idea.

The Silencing the singing part of this compilation reminds me more of slowcore, with the real instrumentation and melodic bases for each song-- the glitchiness seems to just be thrown on top of it. Wasn't the worse thing, though.

6/10

====== co vs. Comet ========

>Atraxia - The Unexplained: Electronic Musical Impressions of the Occult
>Progressive Electronic

A really strange and engaging album from the same guy who made Plantasia, one year before that album was released. A combination of Dungeon Synth, space rock, and classical composition all appear on this album full of surprises. The activity of the songs really do play to many genres outside of Electronic; this is not just an Ambient album.

7/10

>wished bone - psuedio recordings
>lo-fi folk

Very comfy, if very derivative folk songs with a distant female singer. The melodies are very familiar for sitting on the porch during a warm evening-- it easily cements some alteration of that memory in a listener. Doesn't quite excel anywhere else, musically or lyrically. Didn't quite get the closer, as well.

==== EthyBoy vs. FlyingIceWizard ======

>Steffen Basho-Junghans - In the Morning Twilight
>American Primitivism

A live album that works EXTREMELY well with a recorded audiene. The squeaks of doors, light taps, the quiet rumbles of cars, the cry of a child, they fit right into Junghan's soulful playing, which is much more emotional than the intricate pickings of older Primitivism figures.

He doesn't just rely on resorting to hopeful and romantic chords, either-- the second track's waterfall of arpeggios sounds like Colin Stetson if he knew guitar, his sense of control and space in his tracks makes for great intros, and his apparent meandering around the song before he plays it live makes this album feel so much more organic.

By far my favorite American Primitivism album.

8/10

>Jahiliyya Fields - Chance Life
>Outsider House, techno

What I imagine ACTUAL future dance floors will sound like. Very easy to get lost in, with a surprising amount of variety for house.

Hi /daily/ !
Today I had alot more time than I expected because some things went wrong. But at least that way I could listen to your favourite albums, that's something!
I started with the album '77 Live because I got told, it is a good entry for experimental music, but I'm sorry, I couldn't get into it at all. Just like Musical Abortions the recording quality hinders my enjoyment extremely and I neither liked the psych atmosphere it was trying to create nor the general style. In theory I should like this, because it's mellow and dreamy, but maybe I just have to hear more of the genre first, I didn't give up all hopes yet, haha
Then I tried Daikanjyo, which I already liked more, it was a very rough, intense sound, but on some points it honestly just sounded like utter chaos, I tried to make out the point of it or where it was heading to, but maybe that was the mistake
I will come back to that later, I'm confident I can find more things I like in it then.
Also I finally gave in and tried Suicide
And I'm glad I did! This was great, I loved the maniac side of it, full of power, getting totally out of control, but still focused on a clear idea, and omg, I love the synths.
Not every song is a highlight, but it was very good

this >>73177575 is a good experimental entry point tho.
i bet as you warm up to noisy/experimental stuff, 77 live will grow on you tho. i agree you may have to just hear more of the genre, until something clicks.
do fahey soon too!

the drums dropped out exactly when I thought they would in the first track

Could have been worse, /bleep/ would like it a lot
>>
Additionally I heard the first borzoi-reccommendation, The Crystal World by Locrian.
This builds a creepy dark atmosphere, very slow in general, with some odd sound effects, so I can see why it gets the experimental label. I think sometimes the build-ups and ambient sections go on for too long, but overall I could get alot of enjoyment out of it, so thank you borzoi! Tomorrow I will do the next one.

And I listened to the links transgod posted. to get me into hardcore. While I definitely enjoy the punk aspect of it and the in-your-face approach, I really couldn't get into the attitude of the vocals, especially Rise of the Northstar scared me off, sorry trangsod :(
>>73177575
Okay, thank you for the recommendation!
>>73177663
Oh, I mixed that up then. I will return to it once I heard more of the genre.

But do you all like these albums because or despite of the bad recording quality?

And I'm doing Fahey tomorrow as well! Will do some very monotonous stuff pretty much the whole day, so that's a good occasion to hear new music ^^
>>
>>73177848
cmon man, that's something you can do with a lot of techno, but it's not there that the fun of it lies. did you enjoy the sampled voice in Acid is the Answer? that shit gets me hard
do you usually like bleep?
>>
>>73177874
77 live is a bootleg, so the low quality is expected, but honestly it doesnt hinder the experience for me at all. in fact, the lo-fi kind of makes it better. its a lot more fuzzy and noisier and atmospheric because of it.
in terms of dead, even though i like musical abortions its just not a good album lol
lofi is easy to warm up to. you just kinda start to look past it most of the time. even oxen is a lo-fi indie album, you should try that soon. it gets a bit noisy too.
>>
>>73177874
they're not shouting at you they tryna be shouting with you
guess you'd be one for pop punk rather
experimental is a relative attribute and the furthest from a homogenous style or even a scene btw, there's no general entry points or whatever, don't listen to certain other people's lies
>>
>>73177198
*reasonable heights
>>
>>73177987
Thank you for the explanation! I think I'm slowly getting what this is about, haha.
Plans for tomorrow: Ben Frost, Pekinese Opera, Fahey and Even Oxen
>>73178102
Yes, I like some pop punk! If you have any recommendations for that, I would be happy to hear them.

Hmm, you might be right, alot of music and styles thereof can probably be considered experimental...
But maybe it is not so much getting into experimental, but getting sensitized to music outside of one's usualy listening habits, and for me pretty much all experimental music does that.

i heard a lot of good shit today
>ryoji ikeda - dataplex
the sounds on this album are mind-blowing, so much so that even when they weren't moving or changing in any compelling way, i was still engaged by their presence. one of the most interesting albums i've heard.
>coil - ...and the ambulance died in his arms
as someone who doesn't particularly care for what coil he's heard, this surprised me on multiple levels - the atmosphere, the emotion, and how effective it was. coil has always seemed "cheesy" to me, but here, it just works.

>Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.
Not as bad as I was expecting it to be desu. Felt like untitled unmastered, but there were still parts I didn't like. I don't like Kendrick's singing for the most part, and I still don't really like Humble, but everything else was pretty solid and enjoyable for the most part! Love the trap influence on everything.
3.0+

Hey, I actually really liked this. I've started this album plenty of times, but never finished it, but I was pretty captivated by all the tracks. I like the darker feel to this one.
3.5-
>Blackhouse - Five Minutes After I Die
Now, here's an interesting release for y'all. This is a little piece of Christian power electronics from the 80s. Its 45 minutes long, the longest track being the first s/t track. The noise itself isn't that pummeling, and there's a very consistent beat throughout. The real highlight on here are the manic vocals reciting the poem by Betty Stillion Shinn, as well as the sound collage samples of reporters and other TV clips talking about religious messages and stuff. Its a pretty heavy release, and definitely a fun one too. If yr not really into Christian themes, don't worry: they appear on this, but it's not heavily Christian. I recommend it to y'all
3.5-

No, lebron manufactured a team that would have beat the warriors this year. Without KD, this is a series the warriors lose in 6.

Why is Lebron allowed to manufacture his championships and NOBODY is allowed to get in his way? His team is absolutely fucking STACKED...Highest payroll in the history of the NBA. Multiple #1 picks. Is the rest of the NBA supposed to get out of the way so Lebron can secure his 7th fake, manufactured championship? KD is supposed to wait until LeBron is done manipulating the NBA so he might get a chance at his ring???

Link Wray - Link Wray (1971)
>roots rock, country rock

Really impressive radical reinvention for Wray, bearing no similarities to the days of “Rumble”, more indebted to CCR and even Beefheart at times. It’s a bunch of down and dirty country rock, not spectacular and simple but warm and welcoming, and Wray’s guitar parts are always incredible. There’s a nice rambling aspect to Wray’s vocals, he can’t really hold a tune but he sure can shout along in rhythm, and this adds a lot to the homely quality of the album’s general sound. If you dig bands like CCR, check this out.

3.0

Prince Nico Mbarga & Rocafil Jazz - Sweet Mother (1976)
>highlife

At long last, a highlife record I actually really dig. My major issue with the genre is how damn repetitive it always is, and while this is no exception to that rule, the power of the grooves overshadows that. The repetition is more hypnotic than anything else, records like this live or die by how long their grooves can last without ever becoming overdone, and this record mostly passes that test. A couple minutes from each track could stand to be cut, but it’s such a warm and enveloping album.

3.0+

http://i.imgur.com/xikbxBS.jpg

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Déjà vu (1970)
>folk rock

I kinda like CSN, and I definitely mostly like young, so the fact that their collaborative effort is quite a fair bit weaker than the some of its parts is odd. Young’s two tracks are great, they’ve got that slow-burning hard rock edge that makes albums Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and On the Beach special, and they also happen to showcase the album’s few attempts at displaying real emotion or grit. The rest of the album is really light on the ears. Pretty at times, like with the full-bodied guitar work of the opener, but mostly really underwhelming and plodding. Like CSN’s debut but not as pleasant, If I Could Only Remember My Name but not as spacey, Everybody Knows… without the edge.

Hello /mu/.
Recommend me music, I would call it, "absurdist music".
Alike The Monks and Nick Cave (not as in his infinite amount of cheesy ballads)
"Catchy" instrumentals, with a absurdist lyrics, as in the philosophy Absurdism. NOT "lol XD Random!"
You know.
>Life's absurd, we'll all die forgotten and that's bad, but 'Meh'.
Best way I can describe it.
And not just the lyrics but the instrumentals are also playing on the

I think one of the biggest reasons I don't listen to music as much anymore is actually really stupid -- because of my furniture arrangement. I've moved my TV and stereo to the other side of the room from my computer, so I can't hook the computer up to the stereo directly (because I don't own a long enough optical cable). Since I wanted to have my computer hooked up to my TV, I opted to get a long HDMI cable instead, which also transmits sound obviously. Problem now is that I need to have my TV on to get sound from my computer. Which is why I don't use it as much.

Fucking moronic really.

Put it like this.
I don't want the music to be absurdist.
But "channeling it".
Like the bliss of you feel after depression.
Maybe 'mania' is better word?
Nihilism is chaos/randomness.
Absurdism is beyond it, it makes fun of existentialism.
Cardiacs is a bit too high tempo, and random elements for the sake of random elements. And it seem to just be insanity.
Absurdism keeps its sanity.

>>

all of this is killing me

i didn't say you were depressed, the curse of milhaven is not absurdist, the mercy seat having fourteen renditions of the chorus has nothing to do with absurdism, cave's balladry is not worth being mocked, nihilism is not chaos/randomness, absurdism does not make fun of existentialism, >>73190595 fuck off with your logorrhoea + stop start over punctuated writing.

I never said it is absurdist as in literally 100%.
You know, this is hard to explain, whomever wrote the lyrics and music obviously wasn't quite sane at the time, if you get my point. Again not literally "not sane", he obviously isn't insane.
It's clearly absurdist as much as in "making fun of the tragedy of something"...

The Mercy Seat is all bluster and fronting, religious iconography reinterpreted as death row march confidence. It's just about fear of death and trying to muster bravery in the face of it. There's nothing really making fun of tragedy.
The Curse of Milhaven is a silly little story about a witch killing people.
>>
>>73190911
>Fear of death and trying to muster bravery in the face of it
Well put.
>Silly little story about a witch killing people.
Guess they have death and existence in common, and "they" face it with 'tongue in cheek'.

But can't you see how the songs are?
The topics are absurd, or performed in an mad manner.
Am I the only one who see the similarity in style in The Mercy Seat and The Monks - Complication?

>Absurdism isn't tongue-in-cheek
No but the result is, or you become spiritual.
That's why it's fucking called absurdism, you accept the insanity that everything is, all shit and suffering in the world without purpose.
And you respond with "Whatever."
>>
>>73190827
*whoms'tve'ever
>>
>>73190971
Another example, a song made with same "feeling" although completely different music style:
Pumped up Kicks
It appears as any jolly fun catchy song.
But they sing about a mass school shooting and how "great" it is.

>>73191107
uhh listen to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pD24A858Fc

but you couldve totally avoided confusion by saying what you mean exactly instead of trying people to make sense of all that above
>>
>>73191048
the topics aren't absurd (philosophy), the curse of milhaven is absurd (adjective), the mercy seat is desperate. Absurdism is being aware of the chaotic, uncaring nature of the universe and finding meaning in inherent pleasures. You don't respond with 'whatever', you respond with 'what can I do about it?' and continue doing whatever.
absurdism is a mode of thought - what is the result? how does spirituality come into it as a negation of absurdism? how does the religious symbolism and fear of god in the mercy seat play into its absurdism?
>>
>>73191103

the mercy seat, was more about the style of the song and the way it's performed.
Curse of Milhaven was more on the lyrics.

Ah, yes, whoops.

Sure, but not just, also wish for the style of music to be like the aforementioned songs.
Swingy or catchy, with punk style.

I've expressed my concerns with BS&SL before, but my largest one is that it is exhausting.

I prefer ALS because of its subtlety, but moreso that when I finish the album I feel like my spirit has been uplifted, not dragged through a pit of bombastic musical skullduggery.

Although skullduggery is still nice.

more church music, but this time, it's just an organ, one that revels in that holy dissonance just enough to grab my attention. there's one absolutely stunning track here: "The Little Lord of Misrule" captures the sounds of children in the church over the most gorgeous organ music on the record, making for a remarkable atmosphere. quite good overall.

really the most that "happens" throughout 8 is the introduction/defenestration of a short melodic loop on top of another loop

for me it's about the atmosphere and feeling and motion it articulates more than any specfiic moment

also there is a lot of material, but some tracks were instantly memorable to me, "Intro," "GS," "Pulsierendes Laben," and the title track specifically stuck out on my first listen

Osamu Kitajima - Dragon King (1976)

Sounds like the soundtrack to an 80s Japanese porno. So damn cheesy that I almost feel fatter while listening to it. First few tracks, which are instrumental, are pretty damn groovy and I can dig it, but as soon as the vocals enter it's so boring. I was expecting something funkier, something crazy, something a bit more out there. I was under the impression that it would borrow more from both jazz and Japanese traditional musics, but instead it's just bland and soulless... soul, sort of.

The best track is probably the title track, which incorporates quite a bit of Japanese music tradition. Japanese flute and shamisen with guitar and a drum kit works pretty well, I think. There’s also a hint of middle-eastern scales in there, which is neat. But yeah, pretty tame overall, wouldn’t recommend.

Stick asked for my thoughts on AZD a while ago:

Very surprising. Hazyville allured me with it's expertly crafted sound design and atmosphere, but there was something fragile about it's execution. I thought that the addition of more club-based sensibilities would ruin the unique sound that Actress had going for him (keep in mind that I haven't listened to anything else but Hazyville prior to AZD). I was wrong. AZD had more of a rhythmic quality to it, but the atmosphere was still there. I may need some more time to get used to the album, but there is no denying that there is genius behind the whole project.

Hollla if you want more thoughts on anything.

>>73176861
I'm glad you liked it. It's very underrated.
>>
>>73194024
Good assessment of AZD. Definitely check out his other albums. RIP is considered his best by most and has a lot of interesting rhythms and textures. Ghettoville is a lot more unforgiving but is his most interesting thematically as well as atmospherically if you can get past the heavy repetition.

What's the album you gave an 8? The cover art looks interesting.

Tomorrow’s People – Open Soul (1976)
These bass lines my dudes, this is pretty sweet. The muted, musky negro singing is excellent, both choirs and soloists. It’s got everything you need from a black disco album, and then some. The end track is a 20-minute behemoth with clear movements in intro, main, and outro. It really picks up the pace at around 2:30, and becomes the best track of the album by far. It’s basically a little mini album on its own. Repetition really is the game here, with a few steady phrases being played on the bass more or less throughout, with minimal variation, and it drives the entire thing so well. Good stuff, give it a spin.

holy shit
>hellier ulysses - prime example
its a 7 song, 9 minute ep, of some of the most creative guitar music i've heard. it's on the same tape label as telstar drugs, Egg Paper, known for being the hub of the canadian lo-fi guitar post-punk world. hellier ulysses certainly take cues from this scene - the guitars are angular and the riffs are weird - while simultaneously crafting their own, relatively "different" brand of rock music. all of the tracks here are 1:40 in length or less, and each moment of each track is filled with some great vocal hook/guitar riff/bassline that's instantly catchy. there are constant changes in tempo/time signature, which is probably why this is labelled "avant-prog." the tracks are groovy and eclectic-there's even some downtempo-esque electronic stuff on the closer. it's fucken fantastic, check this shit out (maybe trans in particular)

Susumu Yokutu – Sakura (2000)
Somehow a lot more ambient than I expected. Basically consists of a couple of synth notes and phrases with lots and lots of reverb, to the point that it sounds a bit like something recorded underwater. It’s a pleasant sound, but man does it get boring. It’s a bit more listenable once the drums kick in, but that literally only serves to provide a rhythmic beat, nothing else of interest.

The best part, and this is really saying something, was the ending, where there was some kind of vibraphone instrument that played some simple arpeggios. At least there was something going on. Would not recommend.
