we dead

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Hey, haven't posted in one of these before, how do these threads work exactly?

I've been listening to Billy Joel's "The Stranger" a lot for the last few days. I first got into the album a couple years ago and rediscovered it this week. Where should I go next in Joel's discography?

Just keep showing up every day or two, share your opinions about what you're listening and what others are listening to, be thoughtful, honest and nice, preferably in that order.

Also, chronological like any artist.

to me the fact that some footwork (especially like stuff by rp boo) is fucking annoying is an interesting quality, it kinda achieves intensity by being rough, but sparse. And sometimes feels like the most tense dance thing there is. I mean it's not just interesting, things like very "unfitting" vox cuts pull you in cause they really catch your attention. I guess the thing really is a border where you just find stuff disjointed, cause of course when it comes to some stuff i like its really chaotic but you can still see the greater image, and the stuff that doesn't stick together sticks together. And like, Rashad has a very distinct style or sth on that record which to me holds the pieces together. idk does that make sense or something, im kinda tired

i didnt really get that from this album, but yeah I may have underrated this. I wouldn't even call this album's tracklist disjointed, the songs were awkwardly constructed at worse and surprisingly catchy at best.

I think I'll revise my rating considering that I DID like tracks like Show U How, Leavin, Let U No. I guess I like my footwork more wonky than trap.

>John Fahey - Fare Forward Voyagers
I don't think much can be said about this record that hasn't been said already. It's simply one man with a guitar, yet it is incredibly engaging.

I warmed up to the first track, but I still maintain that the second track is not all that interesting and the guitar tone is kind of odd. However, the title track more than makes up for it and is basically perfect. Every time that I listened to it, I stopped what I was doing.

>Jlin - Dark Energy
I'll start this little review off with a disclaimer. This music isn't awful, and I'll give credit where credit is due. I have not listened to that much footwork, but I can tell that this record is inventive in quite a few ways. It utilizes varying tempos, empty space, and a decent range of textures. At the end of the day though, I never want to listen to it again, thus it earns a 1.

As far as I'm concerned, footwork consists of two main things. Vocal samples and high bpm drum samples. This record fucks up the vocal samples so, SO badly. It's really, honestly atrocious to me. I guess I could see where these samples could actually appeal to some people if they like kitschy pop culture references. For example, the song Guantanamo samples The Ring and some stock horror movie sound effects. That shit actually made me cringe. It's a lot of things peppered throughout the whole album that makes me never want to hear this album again. Every time something vaguely interesting happened percussion wise it was ruined by obnoxious vocal samples. Machine Girl does this whole schtick a little better and mixes other, more interesting influences into it.

I'd honestly say stay away from this album unless you really like footwork.

>Rake - Art Ensemble of Rake/Tell-Tale Moog
yeah fuck fuck FUCK this album, its shit. if yr interesting in reading 1000 words on why its bad, i wrote a lengthy review on rym. but, to summarize: theres absolutely no point in this album's existence. its pointless shitty avant garde for the sake of being avant garde, and its boring and pretentious as fuck. theres no reason to listen to this over something like destroy all monsters.

>Car Seat Headrest - Twin Fantasy
I really liked this album! I think I have a soft-spot for most lo-fi indie albums, everytime I listen to one it just feels so... classic. I loved how fuzzy this all was, but I really appreciate that it wasn't hard to make out the words. The lyrics aren't too deep, but they still hit hard. It's good.

>Magnolia Electric Co. - s/t
This is by no means a bad album. I just honestly wasn't into it. It wasn't catching my attention at all. I didn't really like the vocals that much, and I'm rarely a lyric person, so it was just kinda meh for me. Again, its not a bad album at all. Just not me, ig.

I can't be fucked to write something substantial because I just spent 8 hours making donuts so I'll just say this

Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Honky Reduction (1998)
>cybergrind, grindcore

Shitty, derivative grind that's only interesting because of the slight usage of electronics. The vocals are really bad, and I normally like screaming metal vocals, but these just sound terrible. The actual songs are really bad, but the electronics and the guitar work are sometimes interesting, like one track sounds like a bunch of bees buzzing around. Outside of that, irritating and bland.

Hello daily!
Today i listened to two more albums from the essential chart

First Musical Abortions by Dead, I'm sorry daily, but I really didn't like it, it starts with an intro that's just the music from 2001 Space Odyssey in bad quality?
And then the awful recording quality continues and it gets all noisy and loud, but it's just random guitar shredding and incomprehensible vocals??? at least i didn't have the feeling i was missing out on the lyrics here, haha
but seriously, am I msising something or is it just a joke?

Secondly I heard Escape from Noise (perfect title for this occasion, haha) and I liked that one alot more! It's really humorous and comedical, which is thing not many bands do. Maybe the funniest album I've heard. But I don't know if I will listen to that very often, musically it's interesting, but not so much my taste. And since you all recommended me to focus less on lyrics and don't take these into account when rating albums, I figured 5 is a fair rating.
I'm probably overthinking that rating stuff...sorry

Any recommendations for what to hear tomorrow?

It's called noisecore, basically really loud n' fast hardcore punk played poorly and recorded with the worst equipment available.
People who are "into" noise might like it but it is pretty much just a joke, possibly the worst produced album of all time.
And listen to Daikanjyo next desu, that ones more melodic than Musical Abortions at the very least.

noisey and/or challenging albums can sometimes be really rewarding once you get into it. I understand if it's hard to get into noisecore if you haven't listened to much noisey stuff or such before.

The more you listen to such stuff the easier it will be to appreciate of course, but right now you're just diving headlong into it so it might be a bit hard.
Maybe if you want to appreciate it more you could try some easier noise albums and experimental albums first! I could give you some recommendations if you want.

Just don't have much time tomorrow, so I don't know if I can get to them so quickly
>>
>>73159068
No worries, I give them for your sake, not for mine :-)

So first of all which albums are in your top 10 or so? Do you have a chart or anything?

And also do you like any "noisey" or dissonant or experimental albums already? In that case, which ones?
>>
>>73159107
I don't have a favourites chart yet unfortunately, but I usually like indie, post-punk, dreampop, shoegaze and the like, anything with a distinct atmosphere, usually more on the sad, dramatic side.
Radiohead is one of my favourite bands and I heard them being called experimental, but I know they aren't for /mu/ standards.
So some shoegaze albums are probably the most abrasive ones I heard and liked. Not much more experimental I fear
>>
>>73159068
Listen to 77 Live soon. I think that's a very fair intro to good, noisy music and it lays down a lot of what you can expect from that type of music.
>>
>>73159068
Also the only pure noise stuff on the chart is Instruments Disorder and I'm assuming some Keiji stuff. Everything else may have some really noisy elements (like yerself is steam or spirit they're gone) but are very straightforward albums.
also idk if you feel this way but you can listen and post as much as you want in a day like u don't have to limit yrself to a few albums a day lol
>>
>>73159182
Ok I'd say check out these albums in this order:

Locrian - The Crystal World (drone, dark ambient and post-rock which is dark and experimental but stilll pretty accessible)

Ben Frost - By The Throat (very atmospheric dark ambient with a noise edge to it)

Yellow Swans - Going Places (noise/drone but probably one of the easiest in the genre since it has a bit of melody, mood and atmosphere)

Now these are only my recommendations for it of course, but I think those albums might be helpful to expand your palette and learn to accept noise as an instrument / part of music.

Also, what got me to really "understand" experimental music was really when I started approaching music in a different way. I think every sound can be music to someone, and I agree with you that a distinct atmosphere is great (especially sad!). So if you listen to something that you think sounds really weird or like... out of your comfort zone, try focusing on the atmosphere and mood of it more than you focus on the songwriting etc.
Idk I might be rambling, but could help!

pretty much. i'll paraphrase telstar drugs on telstar drugs on this, it's p spork because it just jumps from cool idea to cool idea with little care for song structure or affect or anything, it plays more with style than riffs though like proper spork. i feel like describing it too much would be a spoiler, says enough about it i think. unlike most spork-artists their songs are monotempuous and laid-back to can't-be-bothered vibe-wise

nothing that grabbed me much but p unique and nice enough, so go rec me another

My girlfriend said it is 'strange' that I keep pictures of my late wife around my house. My wife passed away from cancer about 3 years ago. I got my first girlfriend since then about 2 months ago and she is unhappy with the fact that I still have pictures of her around my house and wants me to remove them. I feel like it's a little unfair and having some pictures of her around isn't unreasonable, it's my house and she hasn't been my girlfriend for that long. I could understand if it was like an ex-girlfriend but I feel like there should be some understanding when it comes from spouses that passed away.

Evelyn King - Get Loose (1982)
>boogie, pop soul, contemporary R&B

I can’t complain with an album like this: I expected plastic R&B, and I got plastic R&B. King is an incredibly charismatic vocalist, and by far the best part of the album. She has the vocal prowess one usually associates with ballads, but there isn’t a single ballad on this whole thing, which is incredibly shocking for a pop album from the early ‘80s. The best songs hit really hard, the production is almost Prince-esque, synthetic but still nicely funky, but there are enough tracks that are too plastic and ultra-shiny to make the whole album suffer. Sometimes the eightiesness of it really overwhelms the funkiness of it, and that’s the album’s downfall.

2.5+

Seam - The Problem With Me (1993)
>indie rock

Your standard slowcore influenced ‘90s indie album, full of thick guitars and little interesting songwriting ideas. It’s almost impressive how much every song on here sounds the same, clean guitar noodles exploding into thick, heavy crescendoes. It’s a solid formula, and I formula that I very much like, but to have it repeated nine times really makes it lose it’s luster. Take it as a less interesting Slint album (spot the “Good Morning, Captain” riff on “Stage 2000”) mixed with a little Swirlies and Low, an amalgation of a bunch of different indie rock that lacks the interesting characteristics of its influences.

Vangelis - Blade Runner (Bootleg Version)
The bootleg version of this album is surprisingly good, the vocals snippets add to the overall quality, I’d say.
4/5

TMBG - Demo 1985
Fairly generic piece of Post Punk/80s Alt Rock, it’s “fun” for lack of a better term, but TMBG isn’t particularly innovative. Their tendency to incorporate several influences in short amounts of time is neat, but they ultimately seem gimmicky. Somehow these 1-2 minute long demo tracks manage to overstay their welcome often by being incredibly repetitive. This is still fairly ambitious for a demo and they manage to pack a lot of material in a short time, it’s not all bad, if you’re a fan of the band I’d say check it out.

Jim O’Rourke - Peel Session 1999
The first two tracks on here are quite nice, guitar work on “Little Island Walking” is very emotive. Towards the second half of this track some reversed echoes of the first half of the song fade in, and this brings to light my main criticism of the album, It is overproduced. Vocal doubling on “Halfway to a Threeway,” the industrial-esque intro to “Women of the World,” and the return of reversed music and strange synths about 2/3rds through that song as well, which was overlong and repetitive even without the intro and outro, add nothing to the album and cheapens the listening experience. On a more postive note I did really enjoy "Halfway to a Threeway" both lyrically and musically, "Women of The World" just doesn't do it for me, and it dominates about half of this album.

Flaming Tunes - s/t
This might just be the best one I’ve heard yet from this tourney. An extremely ambitious demo tape with field recordings, classical guitar (actually, it could be steel string, recording is too ass to tell), and robotic post-punk drum machines, this is on par with This Heat’s work in terms of quality in most places. The biggest thing that holds this album back is the simply awful production, the fairly layered sounds and sometimes clashing rhythms don’t sound well on a cassette recording, even the piano peaks the microphone at points in this album. Besides that the vocal performances on this album range from average to poor, but the lazy delivery is somewhat typical of post-punk. A final criticism is that many songs take the format of a simple drum machine loop and piano riff for the composition, just adding one extra lead instrument or voice into the mix on top of it. This is still a really nice piece of experimental pop and post-punk that I would recommend.

Jai Paul - s/t
Yeah this is ass, maybe if I was a good old lad in Angleland this would be more enjoyable.

Ti Paris et sa guitare - Ti Paris et sa guitare (1970)
>french carribean music

Really nice and pleasant. It’s a deviation from the french carribean music I know (literally just Frantz Casseus), as the guitar work isn’t as intricate. It’s a lot more blunt and focused on chords, which in turn makes the album itself more of a vocal-focused affair. It’s a bit of an odd album that doesn’t always hit it’s mark, but it’s really pleasant and listenable, and the vocals are really great.

3.0

Agitation Free - Malesch (1972)
>krautrock, space rock

Interesting album in the canon of krautrock, there’s little to no focus on the groove, just on the atmosphere. It really falls into background music territory fairly often, nothing about this really jumps out and grabs the listener, but it’s cool. The eastern influence is well-implemented and the drumming and textural guitar work are both great. A continuation of the Future Days sound, atmosphere over groove.

Ghost - Opus Eponymous (2010)
>heavy metal, hard rock

Absolutely bizarre mixture of pop and old-school hard rock/heavy metal. The satanic and occult references are all so, SO cheesy, and the actual music doesn’t do much to help that fact. The metal itself is lame and plodding, but the pop influences make the whole thing ten times more over the top and ten times worse, save for the oddly beautiful ending to “Genesis”. It’s all kinda enjoyable in its cheesiness and its kitsch value, but cheesiness does not make a good album.

0.5+

Animal Collective - Fall Be Kind (2009)
>neo-psychedelia

The first AnCo EP to exceed the quality of its parent album. Every track on here is lush and impressively put together, especially the opening two tracks. “Graze” takes a few notes out of Sondheim’s book and puts on a lovely little show tune inspired musical. I really love how the contrasts in Avey Tare’s more expressive voice and Panda Bear’s softer, subtler voice make them seem like different characters, it really is an astounding track. “What Would I Want? Sky” uses it’s Grateful Dead sample to wonderful effect, and it’s one of the band’s best in terms of melodies. The remaining three tracks take a more ambient approach, which is nice, but a bit more unmemorable than the musical themes on the first two. Despite the first two tracks blowing the rest of the EP out of the water, I’m a really big fan of this.

After the enormous disappointment that came with NEU! I decided to try a band I had set low expectations for - Sonic Youth, whom I presumed were little more than pretentious indie rock bullcrap. As it turns out they are probably going to be one of the best bands I've listened to thus far, tried the three albums on the list and here are my thoughts;
>Daydream Nation - Wasn't as big on this as the other two though I still like it, more towards the end though and I quite like the frequent instrumental breakdowns on the album, trilogy is my favourite track/s on the album.
>Evol - Love the instrumental sections and the drumming in particular is tight and crisp, also like the spoken word on In The Kingdom #19 then I'm a sucker for spoken word.
>Sister - My favourite of the albums thus far, peters out a little towards the end though Schizophrenia and Catholic Block are nothing short of amazing as is Pacific Coast Highway.

>the psychic paramount - gamelan into the mink supernatural
grating, noisy psych that tries quite hard to be "loud," and in doing so, loses any subtlety of composition. there are post-rock structures here and there, and some passages are rather compelling, but these are mostly offset by the annoying, wanky psych. not awful, but not good.
>fenn o'berg - the return of fenn o'berg
this is fucking great - the noise bits are mostly textural with minimal abrasion, and the use of cheesy samples makes for some absolutely beautiful passages. there's plenty of motion as well as plenty of pause. wonderful.

Well, it's just my real name, but there's a cool story connected to it - the Clash made a song about me! I was causing trouble in one pub in London and they must've heard people asking about me. Never met them, i probably left the pub just before they arrived. Nonetheless, no wonder a name that catchy stuck with them enough to make it into a song!

It's certainly their most mature release. Every previous iteration of Swans contributes some of their stylistic elements to it. It just doesn't do anything too new or brilliant to justify its self-indulgently epic length. Even the harder tracks on there ("A Little God in My Hands," "Oxygen") are just retreading older material, and sound remarkably like Oxbow or The Jesus Lizard actually. The rest, although somewhat new to the band, is not unusual for post-rock, from what I recall of it.

alright lads, i think im gonna do this now
heres 8 poseur albums im considering for my 1000th rating. i want /daily/ to pick, and here's how its gonna happen:
pick an album and rec me a song. this'll be an 8 person tourney, and yr assigned to the album u pick throughout the tourney. if you win, that'll go on my next backlog chart for my 1000th rated album.
i realize this is tedious and pointless just for rating a 1000th album, but hey, i find it fun.
so pick and rec!

>Nickelus F & Shawn Kemp - Trick Dice

Really enjoyable production, really unenjoyable rapping. Only other Travis Miller I've heard is Uneven Compromise which also has stellar production, and Trick Dice makes me want to check out more of his work. Unfortunately the music here can't stretch out, as it's often 'just' used to provide a platform for Nickelus F's lackluster lyrics and vanilla flow. I can see myself putting this on and ignoring Nickelus F, but more likely I'll look for more that's similar but doesn't include him.

FISH confirmed for advancing.

The whole album somehow manages to capture plodding laziness & absolute, bombastic madness at the same time. It's indescribable controlled insanity.

Easily one of the greatest works of music ever put together. (We're talking "since music was recorded")

But lord almighty, every time I listen to it I'm out of breath by the time it ends. Shit's crazy. Like, too good to be perfect type stuff. IMO, that is.

Aaron Dilloway - The Modern Jester
I'm sorry but this is not good, like looping a series of notes around and around and around again is not an enjoyable experience, particularly when these loops are played quite often at excruciatingly high volumes, it doesn't endow the music with an inherent quality, it makes you a tryhard, chasing after an aesthetic of "darkness" or "spookyness" that the kids these days seem to enjoy

Kath Bloom and Loren Connors - Sand in My Shoe
It's a lot better than the one Loren Connors album I've heard that's for dang sure. It's interesting to hear Connors' guitar style applied to a different context other than free improvisational music, like it's really comfortable sat right up against Bloom's really warbly, almost waifish voice

Albert Ayler - Lorrach/Paris 1966
This is what I want from my free improv jazz, for them to have actually earned their saxophone fart-ridden, CrAzy freakouts... What I mean by this is that you can't go right into what sounds like a fart through the tightest asshole ever without any contextual, actual music... Jangle, take fucking notice.
Everyone here plays really well, it a good show
