The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Good job Terminus. Overall: 3.50
>Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
I started really liking this in the later half of "Taphead", and I loved "New Grass". But honestly, these were the only times when I really enjoyed myself, and had it not been for these I probably could say that, in general, I didn't like the record as a whole. I didn't really feel the soul that most people talk about, I wasn't a huge fan of his voice, and I didn't like some of the prog elements that it had. I don't know why "New Grass" clicked with me so well versus the other tracks.. it was just really damn good.
3/5
>Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You
Hey a good post-hardcore album! Actually my first time ever hearing Unwound too. This was pretty good, although I didn't fall in love like most people seem to. Some tracks were huge hits, while others were a little boring. My favorite moments (these were really fucking good): the bridge in the later half of December, chorus of Treachery, the entirety of Terminus, when the vocals become semi-yells in Off the Century, and the entirety of Below the Salt
3.5/5

>>
>Red House Painters - Down Colorful Hill
I think it finally clicked. Somewhere early in this album I laughed a little while tears were in my eyes and said "what the fuck man?" Honestly, this is just really sad. That's its selling point: its story and message.

"24" tells the STGSTV-esque story of the depressions and worries of aging, which I can relate to after starting to realize how much of my life has been wasted. Obviously I'm still very young though, and I'm sure I will continue to relate more to this as I get older. "Medicine Bottle" hit way, way too close to home. Not to blog or incentive a pity party, but I've dealt with a lot of this shit, a lot of what he talks about here I can relate to. It truly hurt hearing the story of a happy person trying to pull a depressed person out of their fog. My family, particularly my sister, are some of the happiest people I know. It's hard seeing them try to help me and share their happiness with me, and I think it would be even harder in a romantic relationship such as was discussed in this song. This dynamic of an optimistic person helplessly trying to save someone who's broken is one that has always been really heartbreaking to watch/ listen to purely because of how much I have seen this dynamic play out in my own relationships. And then in this same track there's all the "tfw no gf" and breakup stuff which I'm always a sucker for. I don't have many thoughts about the next track, "Down Colorful Hill", besides that it was another of my favorite tracks and that I feel like it should be mentioned, because after this the album kind of drops in quality.. which brings me to a few flaws. It's top heavy, it's not amazing musically, and there aren't really any tracks here that absolutely blow me away.

Anyway, I feel like I shouldn't be talking about these negatives too much, because again I really do think this is a great album with an amazing story and atmosphere.. and I'm both looking forward to and dreading the day when I can listen to this in full whilst at an extremely low point, because I'm sure moments like those are when this album is most impactful.

I have three questions.
1. In a sharethread someone posted Morton Feldman - Rothko Chapel/Why Patterns? Is there anything else about the relationship between Rothko, in a broader sense colour, and music?
2. I'm looking for music about geometry (Constructivism, Suprematism, De Stijl etc). So far I found "Baku: Symphony of Sirens. Sound Experiments in the Russian Avant Garde" and "Jakob van Domselaer - Proeven van Stijlkunst" (no seeders) on Rutracker. What are some other pieces I can listen to?
3. I got John Tchicai - Real Tchicai from here and I'm loving it. What should I listen to next?

>Last Exit - Last Exit
Pretty cool wankery, the rock styling works well. Not sure I like the overly distorted guitar from Sonny here, he gets a bit lost in the noise of the other instruments. Speaking of which the drumming is great, provides a really solid backbone for the other players. 3.5+/5

>Pharoah Sanders - Izipho Zam (My Gifts)
I tend to not like vocals in jazz very much but there's something about Leon Thomas' yodelling that I can't get enough of. It fits Sanders' spiritual style of jazz so well, I think it's the primal feeling. So I love the first track which sounds much like a continuation of Karma. Balance is a great skronky free jazz track too but the real star is the 29 minute B-Side Izipho Zam with it's tribal inspired percussion. And Sharrock's awesome. I'm not really talking about Sanders much here but it goes without saying that he's great here doesn't it. It doesn't get boring once. 4+/5

Tell me when does Sanders start getting bad

regarding Feldman, as far as I know he was an acquiantance of Rothko (and other contemporary painters) and the inspiration for the piece was the experience of being in the chapel, so it's kinda a tribute, and is related to the Chapel paintings as I guess kinda an "abstract expressionist" piece where it really tries to express itself "by itself", without - in the case of Feldman - use of memory-related contextualising or bringing out any musical symbolical associations (which he achieves by making a whole lotta pauses, what a hack). Which in turn could be related to Rothko who makes his Chapel paintings one colour, no contrast (which is kinda whats at the base of visual context) (what a hack), total escape from symbols. thats reinforced by the fact that the chapel is really meant to be a chapel but a non denominational one, ykno, no symbols. But idk much about rothko so i could be totally off, kinda makes sense tho doesnt it, and loosely ties the concepts
Im kinda pulling that out of my ass, excuse me if thats obvious to you

oh yeah and the cover for the recording is not even from the chapel, heccin missing the point baka

>>72972325
Brel kicks so much ass and I don't even like much Chanson. Besides his bolded albums on rym, is there anything else by him that's worthwhile.

>>72972492
I love Hot Rats, but as someone that's heard every Zappa album, Freak Out is absolutely his best intro into his best and most worthwhile era, as it has the most albums with similar qualities to it.

Zappa only made a couple albums similar in style to Hot Rats (instumental fusion, "jazz"-lite) which were Waka/Jawaka and Sleep Dirt. Even if you were to argue that it's good, it's not a good into into his later music. I'd argue One Size Fits All is a better into to his fusion stuff anyways, since it has the most albums similar to it.

Again, I'm arguing about entry-usefulness rather than quality.

>>72972676
Do you dislike HR for any reason other than it being falsy labeled as jazz by people who don't listen to the genre? I know you've enjoyed a little bit of Zappa anyways.

Pitchfork did something pretty un-surface-level with this. I'm surprised by how they did with some non-normie picks here. Actually, for what it's worth, this Jessie Jarnow guy is serious over there. His book from a year or so ago, Heads: A Biography of Psychedelic America, was really quality and something necessary, in fact.

Well I spent a decent amount of my childhood in the south so I think it might be a nostalgia thing mostly.

But Big Krit, CunninLynguists, Curren$y, Devin the Dude and Outkast were some of the guys that got me into the whole scene. I liked the smooth/mellow old school sound and it's still one of my favorites in the genre.

Depends on what you're looking for though. Houston has lots of smooth stuff (UGK, Keke, Mike Jones, Chamillionare/Paul Wall), Memphis has more hardcore (Three Six, Tommy Wright), New Orleans has straightforward gangster shit (No Limit/Cash Money) and Atlanta has more of the trap sound (Gucci, TI... lots of modern stuff)

Pretty sure there's a chart somewhere I can dig up to help you out if you're really interested

Quick question

When I relisten to The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads, should I listen to the original or the reissue
>>
>>72976022
OutKast has been the only ones I've enjoyed a great amount.

Not sure I'll be able to go through the southern hip hop since I already got a huge backlog.

I'm gonna be listening to some of the ones you listed when I get t the other decades.
>>
>>72976149
O R I G I N A L

I like a lot about the new mix, but they fucked up a lot of the great noisier guitar parts and placing more emphasis on Pearson's singing, which is *great* but definitely ruins a lot of the instrumental moments by pushing them into the back.
>>
>>72973568
would you mind posting the 80's, 2000's and 10's charts if you have them?
>>
>>72976154
Yeah, I think Outkast is unique in that they have something for everyone. Even my parents can dig some of their poppier/later singles.

Those first few artists I listed have a very similar production style, with the live jazz/funk thing going on. So I feel like you might dig em.

Also no big if you can't go through more Southern stuff, I just figured I'd throw some examples/those charts your way since you seem somewhat interested!

I'm away from my computer so I'll just drop some unstructured thoughts real quick

The Byrds' Preflyte was a decent collection of pre Mr. Tambourine Man demos. They evolved so much over the course of their short career that it's easy to see these demos as little more than weak, bare pop tunes, and that's pretty on the point. But they're done very well, and they have all the characteristics that makes me really like this band, even if it's in a decidedly less interesting, more primitive fashion. Probably for completionists only, but a nice, short listen.

2.5+

Misfits' Earth A.D. / Wolfs Blood is just fucking rock solid hardcore through and through. Not as poppy as Walk Among Us, and I kinda miss that, but it's such a thrashy, genuinely threatening good time.

3.0

I actually haven't gotten around to it either though I have the game...

Most stand on their own as good games, so I'd say don't worry about that.

It has a lot of RPG elements, dungeon crawling, gay anime shit, and social sim elements. If that sounds like your shit then go for it.

Minus these gameplay elements and reoccurring elements/monsters from the SMT universe there's really not a lot holding them together

>>72978601
I totally agree

>>72978606
I'd say start with Ces gens-là for Brel and Public Strain for Women. Those aren't personally my favorites of theirs but the best entry points for them.

And are you talking about Die Streichquartette? That might not be the best place to start with any of the composers on there, as it's just under four hours of serialism from three different composers. But yeah, I love the shit out of it.

Also yeah, I was talking about Die Streichquartette. Glad you mentioned that... probably don't want to start there. Any advice on how to get into those composers? That's one of those albums I've seen around but never knew much about

>>72978700

>>72978601
suffocation like throwing you left hooks, breakdowns, and hate verse chorus, but work with thematic variation that keeps songs together. pretty sure they were the band whose style would define brutal death metal the most but don't quote me on that. wasn't as big on it as i remembered tho
jlin is also p cool in the way her tracks progress, for this style
>>
>>72978735
No problem! I would rec starting with 5 then making your way backwards through the persona series if you enjoy them more. If you want stuff with deeper RPG elements and less social sim stuff I'd rec trying out some of the stand-alone SMT titles like Nocturne or Strange World

>>72978754
Pro-tip: Never listen to my advice about Post-Punk. I seem to like pretty much the opposite of what literally everyone else seems to when it comes to that. For example, I'm probably the only dude that think's Women's s/t is better than Public Strain.

Post-Punk is either your thing or it isn't don't fret about it. Especially modern post-punk.

And about getting into those composers...

Short Answer: Bro, idk

Long Answer: I'm not the most classically-oriented guy. I have no idea where you should start with Webern or Berg. Not even pieces of their music I could individually recommend that's not on that comp. I'd say try asking Hampus or /classical/ if you get the chance.

This Schoenberg album is pretty highly regarded by people on /daily/ as far as I can see. Still, it's just over two hours, and basically the same pieces performed on that we were previously talking about. https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/arditti-string-quartet-and-dawn-upshaw/arnold-schoenberg-2-streichquartette-i-iv/

Most highly-regarded serialist albums are daunting, long, and usually feature the performer doing multiple composers' works.

This Stockhausen comp I just heard on my current chart is pretty manageable, but more on the concrete side of serialism. Basically, taking serialist ideas like dodecaphony created by serialst composers like Schoenberg/Webern.

For getting into those individual composers though, I'd seek out what people regard as their most highly regarded pieces then find good recordings of those.

I guess the quality drop of DCH has more to do with sequencing, I really really like Japanese to English and Lord Kill the Pain, but they might come off as a little too simple due to the tracks that precede. Michael is just an amazing track no matter where you put it, though. Glad that you gave DCH another shot and ended up liking it so much though!

Also what fish said, when I first listened to them, DCH was a 3.5 for me, LTIY a 3, and Laughing Stock a 4 (but I already was into Spirit of Eden by the time I listened to it and liked that one more than LS).

>Slowdive - Morningrise (1991)
I really enjoyed how the walls of sound had a comfy lofi edge to it in contrast to the dreamy and clear vocals. The vocals float on top of all the noise and makes it really easy to get lost in the sound. The third track, Losing Today, is the one that is the most interesting to me. It feels like a cross between Bowery Electric and Grouper with distant guitar tones and hushed barely audible vocals slowly fading in and out. Checks all the right boxes for me and is definitely worth checking out if you like Slowdive and haven't heard this EP yet. [7/10]

>The Chariot – One Wing
For a metalcore album made half a decade ago this has no business being as good as it was. It’s tight, consistent, yet varied and has a lot of surprising and satisfying moments. Could potentially get too “scene” at times for some, but this rarely happened for me. Even if you’re a person whose favorite albums you’d consider “headbangers” there’s no reason not to get down with this.
8

>Wipers - Over the Edge
100% confirms these guys had one of the best trilogies in rock music. This is the weakest compared to their previous two, but their fusion of OG punk + post-punk is magical. Ain’t no one do it like these boys. Incredibly tight and consistent minus a couple road bumps. What else could you ask for?
8

>Cliff Jordan and John Gilmore - Blowing In From Chicago
I put this album on at first preparing for another 6/10 Hard Bop album that I wasn’t gonna connect with at all minus a few stand-out moments. What I got instead was a decent surprise. The playing here has so much surprising character and variety that I wasn’t expecting to find here. Everything flows together so smoothly that I honestly took longer than I’d care to admit that there were TWO different saxophonists playing here. Every song I was looking forward to the improvisational section more than the last. A real treat, especially if you don’t find yourself captivated by straight-up jazz much at all.
8

>Ulver - Nattens madrigal: Aatte hymne til ulven i manden
Okay yeah I guess this is TECHNICALLY really fucking good for a Black Metal album,,, but I can’t help but think “uh…didn’t they already do something very similar to this but 100x better where every song was better than this”. I totally can’t critically examine this thing on its own because of how much it’s basically just their debut but worse. I can’t see a reason to ever favor playing this album than that one. Amazing in it’s own right, but rightfully overshadowed.

>Dexter Gordon - Go
I’m so sick of just writing “There were mostly strong tracks here minus a few songs” for these hard bop albums I keep feeding my face but that honestly reflects my feelings on “Go”. There’s a lot of character in this playing but just not enough to really capture me. “Love For Sail” is great and so are the first two tracks. Otherwise it’s just alright.
7

>Thelonious Monk Septet - Monk's Music
Certainly more character and originality than I’ve heard on many of Monk’s albums, but I really didn’t connect with the longer tracks here like I did on Brilliant Corners. I wish I knew much more to add to this, but I really feel like for a headlining guy, Monk is so subdued for someone obviously so creative. I’d like to see much more of him in the front. Not even Coltrane’s presence can make me love this which makes me go
7

>Pasteboard – Glitter
No, it’s not amazing, but ya know what? It’s fuckin’ alright. It’s shoegaze that’s NOT total shit like wow! The melodies are simple, but satisfying in an innocent, pop rock + reverb sort of way. And that’s all I ask from this genre. Just write music that has some element of enjoyability below your $2000+ pedal setup your dad bought. I could see if I was super into gazeshit I’d really dig this, as it’s pretty enjoyable considering how much I rarely like this genre.
6

>Gipsy Kings – s/t
I recognize way more music on here than I’m comfortable with. Gave me major déjà vu and I’m not sure where I’ve heard a lot of this before. It opens with that DENG DING DA DENG DING DA DENG flamenco song I’m sure you’ve all heard and continues on with a book of surprisingly less and less surprised as it continues on. /technically/ it’s great, but I personally didn’t get much out of it.

>三上寛 - 怨歌集
From one of the Daikanjyo Boyz™ comes an album that frankly reminds me of that one album we memed a couple months ago “Gleaming Crayon”. Passionate singer/songwriter/folk music with the energy of 1000 blazing hot Japanese men, but extremely lacking in any sort of variety or memorable moments I really felt like I could connect with or enjoy outside of the context of the album. It’s consistent, but perhaps too much so for how unsurprising it felt.
6

>Snarky Puppy – We Like it Here
I feel a tad disappointed by this album. Yeah, it’s a jazz-fusion album with some amazing playing and variations for sure…but I just get this harsh, lifeless, mechanical feeling form it. I’m not sure what it is particularly and it’s really pissing my off actually. I’m having the hardest time pin-pointing it down but for what it’s worth it’s decently enjoyable.
6

>Good Morning & Good Night – Narrowing Type
You know you’ve gone /FULL SLOWCORE/ when your secondary tag is “ambient”. For real though, my review of this is literally just “some of it was good some of it was not so good”. Basically, every song was better than the last up until it peaked at “Median II” then slowly decreased in quality. Technically, I’d say it fails as both a slowcore and ambient album, but as an overall nice-feeling experience it does alright.
6

>Huerco S. - Colonial Patterns
Hmm. Definitely needs a try again in the future, but at this point I didn’t really find myself entranced by it except for a few notable occasions. The sounds and progressions are all there, but everything just feels mediocre and bogged down version of stuff I’ve heard done better and more logically. One of the few albums on here I genuinely felt like I didn’t “get” but that just makes it more interesting to me.

>Mark Stewart + Maffia - Learning to Cope With Cowardice
Okay I really like The Poop Group but Mark wtf are you doinig here? Shit sucks. You suck. Stop it. This fusion of dub/post-punk/experimental rock are so loose and nonsensical. It’s not terrible or anything but I can’t even recall a single song that I’m like “oh yeah I’m enjoying this” except for maybe the last track. Strangely enough, I still find myself really intrigued by this and kinda want more. Maybe I’m just masochistic.
5

>Dungen – Häxan
Ya know for a 2016 prog rock + folk album this really don’t suck ass which is awesome. I found I just wish I genuinely enjoyed the genre more. There’s occasionally a cool melody or variation, but nothing I’d really consider even that memorable. Why tf is this even in my backlog? It only has 100 ratings and I haven’t even heard their bolded album. Where has my mind gone?
5

>ROME - Masse Mensch Material
Totally not bad at all, but fails to be interesting in any other way that every other ROME output I’ve heard so far hasn’t done in a hundred better ways. Only for those who are huge fans of ROME and Neo-folk in general. Unfortunately, I hardly consider myself any of those with a few minor exceptions.
5

>Perfume Genius – No Shape
As far as diversity and general songwriting, this really blows his last album out of the water. However, I found myself less captivated by this style of art pop than I perhaps should’ve been. The guy can write a decent tune, but there’s not much here for me.
5

>Voivod - Dimension Hatröss
Idk it’s uninteresting prog metal and it’s just a worse version of something they did better in the future. You really want me to like this? Fuck you.
4

>The World of Skin - Ten Songs for Another World
As someone who will defend The Burning World as a decent album, this was super boring and uninspired. I don’t have much to say about this other than you could hear an album 2x as good as this if you just heard The Burning World or Drainland.

>Laurel Halo – Quarantine
The vocals here only BARELY work sometimes, and it’s typically on the more ambient, less IDM-y and more ambient moments. What could’ve been a more varied, minimal electronic release with a lot of surprising twists is pretty much ruined by some abysmal vocals. I totally don’t hate it. In fact, I really admire its ambition and when it hits it fucking HITS. Unfortunately, there’s just not much here for me at all.
4

>David Lee Roth - Eat 'Em and Smile
I know it’s entirely my fault for listening to this but I genuinely finished this and was like “okay why tf did I listen to this”. It’s literally the highest concentration of dadrock I’ve listened to in a single sitting in a long time other than when I put on something decent like Sabbath. Idk it’s bad.
3

>TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
Definitely divergent of most indie rock that was coming out at the time, but I kind of wish it wasn’t. The fusion of so many ideas doesn’t really work well at all, and as a result feels just so ham-fisted and…bad. Like, it’s not the WORST think I’ve heard recently (see album below. That one is worse) but there’s not a single enjoyable song on here. Not a one. Was honestly angered by this thinking “WHAT do people see in this???” but maybe I’ll just have to return to it in the future to find out. For now it’s up in the air.
2

>Univers Zéro – Hérésie
I’m really glad I don’t give a hoot about things being ahead of their time, or else I might enjoy this to any extent. Otherwise, it does a really shitty job at any sort of atmosphere. It’s basically ambient prog and that’s just as good as you think it’d sound.
2

Some good shit on here, but most of it was just okay.

It seems like vocals seems to spoil electronic music for a lot of people, so the Laurel Halo rating isn't too surprising.

Maybe it's the gap created by a normal person singing and surreal bloops that screws up the setting for some people. Like you're listening to synth arpeggios and some white guy starts singing, it's like some rando just walked into your nice dream

At least that's what I'm guessing, that and the vocals tend to be plain as well

Nattens Madrigal is nothing like their first album though, NM has a way harsher sound to it, more akin to classic no-fi black metal rather than the sorta atmospheric thing they were going for with Bergtatt.

?
>but I can’t help but think “uh…didn’t they already do something very similar to this but 100x better where every song was better than this”. I totally can’t critically examine this thing on its own because of how much it’s basically just their debut but worse. I can’t see a reason to ever favor playing this album than that one. Amazing in it’s own right, but rightfully overshadowed.
Nattens doesn't really sound much like bergatt, they have pretty different approaches (and nattens is obv better)

Been a very busy week with regards to listening through this chart (and more), so I'll try to summarize as concisely as possible (crossed out Giley Corey as I'm going to listen to that in an hour);
>Life WIthout Buildings - Any Other City. This isn't a /mu/core album though I figured I try it anyway, love the vocals on this thing, Sue Tompkins accent is adorable and I really like her manic style, fits the mathier elements of the album very well, surprised it isn't bigger on here.
>Broken Social Scene - Feel Good Lost & You Forgot It In People. Feel Good Lost confused me on first listen, had no idea they started as a downtempo band of all things, so the transition to You Forgot It In People was certainly surprising to say the lease, liked the heavier sections of the former (especially on Mossbraker) though YFIIP really struck me as a brilliant album, far more consistent even if it starts a little weak.
>Weezer - The Blue Album & Pinkerton. I didn't have my hopes high knowing what lies ahead, though I did enjoy them somewhat, generally prefer the blue album thus far though I wouldn't consider either to be anything in particular, really liked the track Buddy Holly and Holiday, they were a nice mix of chill and energetic. Do quite like their self-deprecating style.
>Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention - Freak Out! Never heard any of Zappa's other material and so believed it was going to be TMR with greater emphasis on guitars, boy was I wrong, great album though I didn't do much for me as a whole, I can see why a lot of people liked it though, preferred a lot of the later songs especially You're Probably Wondering Why I'm Here and Help I'm A Rock!
>Cap'n Jazz - Analphabetapolotology. I've only listened to this once, it'll get the good 20 listens soon enough though I wasn't big on this, the length made it quite sapping for songs so sharp and immediate, though the covers did catch me off-guard (especially Take On Me), and much in the good way.

if u don't know, the first 30 minutes of analphabetapolothology is just burritos, inspiration point. I prefer analphabet but i bet that'd be an easier listen for you.

honestly mothers are sub/daily/core or something, they're always talked about in these threads. definitely dig into mothers since u liked freak out, i recommend going chronologically with them. the build up to Uncle Meat is great.

>The vocals here only BARELY work sometimes
The vocals are usually the main point of contention, so I'm not surprised. You either love em or hate em. Maybe check out Chance of Rain since it is entirely instrumental? Also her new album features her vocals, but they are more pleasant and used less frequently. Still, I love the abrasiveness of her voice. I think it fits so well.
>>
>>72984776
Good thing that Terminus explained what they meant in their reply

- Implying that the current negative ratings on the chart would only mean they won't enjoy the rest

versus questioning their time investment in music that rice would likely not enjoy, because how far a lot of the albums may be out of rice's comfort zone

Clearly they meant the second so it's fine

I want more violin in jazz, especially if it's energetic, almost every time I get that from an album I like it, Just fits very well with a lot of jazz.

This is a good album all around. Don't have any particularly large problems with it, only some nitpicks. The guitar does some things I'm not a big fan of during spanish lady while the other instruments are soloing but it redeems itself manifold in the same track.
The soloing in the beginning of if only we knew works really well but steals a little too much time from the track, wish the groove went on for longer. The track doesn't have time to conclude as well as spanish lady did. In general just wish there was more of this. Might look around for bonus versions of this to hear some more material.

You can save it in png on the website in OP but it doesn't really matter its the repeated savings that ruin jpg quality, you can just start saving your charts in png and jpg and uploading the jpg but using the png to edit it when you add another score so you don't end up with a blurry chart after saving it again and again after adding so many ratings.

GIVINGBEAR. Are all these albums christian-core out of coincidence or purpose? Overall: 3.17
>Lift to Experience - The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads
Decided to relisten to this, and dropped the rating by 0.5 points. I first heard this when I was level 1 embryo, and I just think I overrated it. It's still a really great record though. I absolutely LOVE "Falling From Cloud 9" and "With Crippled Wings". The other tracks are good too but don't come near the greatness of those two.

>The Trees Community - The Christ Tree
Some interesting instrumental sections, but overall not reall my kind of stuff. I wasn't that much of a fan of the vocals either. Still decent overall though.

Don’t feel like making a new chart so I’m gonna stick with freeforms for now. Only feel like reviewing this one for now. TLDR, lots of good shit lately.

V/A - Master P Presents: Down South Hustlers
>Southern Hip-Hop

What the fuck is this? Master P distributes a two hour release that’s remarkably consistent. Like, it might be the most cohesive No Limit project I’ve heard despite its length. If you want an intro to this New Orleans sound, flipping through this is probably a good idea. This has to be one of the most underrated compilations I’ve stumbled upon, there’s only a few duds on here. P mixes it up between relatively unknown rappers/groups and more famous groups (8Ball & MJG, ESG).

Speaking of which - what is this UGK song I’ve never heard?? The bassline/synth combo is great, P actually comes through with this filthy verse (uhhhh!) and Silkk mostly stays on beat (!). Here’s a good time to remind you that Silkk is potentially the worst rapper of all the time yet he had a double platinum album for some mysterious reason. I don’t even know man.

Production is a bit on the generic side but man it’s miles above the typical No Limit stuff. Lots of banging bass, nice synths and those tight ass hi-hats. Though I’m pretttty sure they remade the beat for “I Got 5 On It” on “Can’t Trust No Man”. They didn’t use the same beat or even the same sample, I think they just remade it note by note with worse technology. 100% convinced.

Anyway, definitely worth flipping through if you want a sense of this scene. Weird to hear all sorts of west coast references, as this came right around the time P left the Oakland area. Falls off a little toward the end but solid stuff.

The Breeders - Pod (1990)
>alternative rock, indie rock

Half really cool, ultra-raw indie rock, half generic as shit grungy alt rock. Deal’s vocals are the album’s passionate centerpiece, she deserved much more of a voice in Pixies and she’s getting that voice here, screaming and hollering with the ferocity of a riot grrrl vocalist (or Black Francis, frankly) but retaining a certain sweetness and simplicity. Her songwriting is wonderful in it’s more creative moments, but it falls back on too many shitty cliches to really be anything spectacular. The atmospheric moments, accentuated by Walford’s subtle yet powerful drumming and Alibini’s raw, stripped-down production, are incredibly well-done, but the pop is wholly generic at best.

2.5+

Tennis - Cape Dory (2011)
>indie pop, twee pop

I can’t lie, I’ll be playing this over the summer, but it’s some of the most uninspired, worthless stuff I’ve heard in a while. A fun game to play while listening to this album is “count the motifs they’ve stolen from other artists”. The vocals are pure Shangri-Las filtered through aa wall of pure nothing; the melodies are Beach Boys-esque if the Beach Boys sucked; and the general vibe of the music is like The Pussywillows or Best Coast, like the former without the fun and like the latter without a charismatic vocalist. Kinda sucks, basically, even if it’s pleasant.

Sly and The Family Stone - Stand! (1969)
>funk, psychedelic soul

A rip-roaring good time. There are some really long-winded songs that detract from the whole album, “Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey” and “Sex Machine”, especially, but the more concise songs are wonderful. The title track and “Everyday People” are obvious highlights, with blisteringly tight arrangements and infectious vocal parts, and the fuzz bass and wordless chorus of “I Want to Take You Higher” needs to be commended as well. Maybe not as great as I wanted it to be, but still really damn good.

The Millennium - Begin (1968)
>sunshine pop, psychedelic pop

Might hold a candle to the Beach Boys in terms of sunshiney psych pop goodness. The vocals and some of the more radio-friendly songs might be a bit nondescript, but any negative aspect here is counteracted by how good these fucking arrangements are. From a pop standpoint they’re great, catchy as hell and easy on the ears, but it’s when they bring in some more out-there instrumentation and melodies that the album really picks up. One of the most inventive pop albums of the ‘60s.

C.W. Stoneking - Jungle Blues (2008)
>blues

Kind of like a modern day vaudeville act. Stoneking’s takes on the blues could easily be taken as parodic and tongue-in-cheek (and they might be, as far as I know), but he treats the style with a whole lot of respect. Can’t say I’m a fan of the busier, New Orleans-based tracks that remind me a lot of a less idiosyncratic Tom Waits, and Stoneking’s vocals are often hit or miss, but the quieter country blues tracks are real nice.

Damn, I agree with Darklands, that's gotta be one of the better songs. Not a bad score overall though, some of the moments like "Sex Machine" definitely drag on too long

Acronym - River Red Gum
This EP was mastered by Neel and it's like really apparent, the whole thing sounds exactly like Neel. It doesn't do much bad or good though for Acronym, but I think it's a good experience for Neel, who can actually pull off a specific style quite alright, while being barely memorable anyway.
"River Red Gum" and "Photosynthesis" are like ok I guess, but nothing special. "Canopy" is p boring. "Epiphyte" is a decent track though, it has a good style to it.

Covered In Sand - Heaven's Gate Suicides
"Heaven's Gate Suicides" - had a potential, but it was wasted somehow
"Heaven's Gate Suicides (Vatican Shadow Remix)" - just plain boring
"Russian Gold & Blood Diamonds" and "Pale Skin" are more ambient~ish, but "Pale Skin" is more in line with the rest of the stuff being uninteresting with no intrigue whatsoever and generally unnoticeable, while "Russian Gold" is the only redeeming track on this single, it doesn't sound very original or like something you WOULDN'T expect from an industrial techno artist, but it's still p alright.

Gardland - Improvisations
You don't get much excited about a 16 minutes long techno track, but it was actually not that bad and even not that boring.
"0315", a second track with a normal length, now I could even call it "p alright". In general the thing you notice about the band is a good sense of structure, they make songs really easy to comprehend.

p.s. I changed my font from Century Gothic bolded which I used since the beginning of time to Century Gothic regular cause only now I noticed it's actually cooler

I'm going to a costume party later tonight, theme is "P", so I'm going to dress as a pirate, as in copy pirate. Because I'm lazy. I'll just rig a bunch of USB memories and maybe a hard drive or two and wear as a necklace. Anything else I should bring?

Mind, this is with a bunch of psychology students who are deeply offended if anyone says they're not a feminist, so dressing up as pimp would probably be considered disgustingly sexist and oppressive.
