The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

I'm watching QI, it's a good show, but I'm often stumped at how they get some things so bloody wrong. For example, last episode I watched they asked "What would an amnesiac person say if you asked their name?" and then explained that they would know their own name (almost always true), because amnesia means you don't remember things after an event, and you will always remember things before the event (absolutely wrong). If you google amnesia, literally the top result will tell you that both anterograde and retrograde amnesia exists.

How do they miss this?

Harry Pussy - Harry Pussy
[1993]
>noise, noise rock

Reaches that delicate place just inbetween complete improvised mess and rock played with loud instruments. I really liked the more thought-out and musical parts but even the freakouts were alright. Really I just listened to this because of the title and band name lol.

The programme. They've constantly got lots of factual errors in their questions.

Jim O'Rourke - Fast Car (live In Japan, 9/16/2002)
I pretty much knew I was going to like this before I went in and wasn't dissapointed. It's certainly a unique take on this song, which by this point has been covered to the point of cliche. It good.

Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tapes/Blood on the Tracks Sessions
Alrighty this was fucking fantastic, Slower paced than I was expecting but it was certainly refreshing to hear them like this. Blood on the Tracks grew on me in a pretty major way

Sun Ra - Jazz in Silhouette
It's cool I suppose, but I don't really think it's that inventive of an album, like it's conventionally sound and well performed, but it doesn't really do anything that one can immediately point to and say that it's really special, It's not really something I would seek out to listen to just for the fun of it, I know Sun Ra can do better. Ancient Aiteopia was the best track.

Klaus Nomi - Klaus Nomi
It was a bit naff really, I saw what he was doing, at times it was really quite fun, but for the most part it was slightly annoying

Mac Demarco - This Old Dog
At first it was a bit uninteresting but it slowly dawned on me that this is supposed to be a "relaxing" cool guy thing, it works, well done mac

Alright first review for /daily/ in two+ years let's do this

Broadcast - HaHa Sound

This was a decent start for my weird/abstract "pop" music list. Trish Keenan's dreamy vocals provide the foundation for much all of this album's tracks. Keenan's voice weaves in and out of the instrumentation which is rooted in dream pop, but also tips their hat to more psychedelic ideas. That being said this album kind of stays more to an average/good for me. All of these songs are very pleasant, but I wished it would be willing to be weirder and embrace the more psychedelic/experimental side. I enjoy dream pop stuff, but admittedly a lot of the time it can become nondescript for me and HaHa Sound slightly leans toward that direction. That being said there are plenty of great tracks on here. I specifically enjoy the second half where they show more of their psychedelic chops in Lunch Hour Chops, Ominous Cloud and The Little Bell. I also enjoy the transition tracks a lot and wish that some of them would've been worked into full length tracks.

Overall, I did enjoy this record and suspect this rating to probably improve with multiple listens. I will also make my way through their discog as well.

Shout out to the anon who recommended this

Hey, maybe I'll post some reviews.

>The Chocolate Watchband - No Way Out
This is mostly worthless. At their best, they sound like a sterilized, second-rate imitation of those who not-so-subtly inspired them here--The Rolling Stones (hey, is that Mick singing?), some R&B (overdone, unnecessary covers), loads of groups from the Haight-Ashbury. Really, they're a less melodic, less talented Jefferson Airplane; there's no way around that. But perhaps the biggest offense is this godawful stereo mix. All that comes through is a tambourine in the left channel.

All that being said, these guys have early-psych cred, and some choices they've made here are genre-forming and quintessential--early experimentation with tape effects, sitar, that tinny guitar sound that would become Barry Melton of Country Joe & the Fish's calling card.

3.5/10

>The Chocolate Watchband - Inner Mystique
This is a huge step up from their debut. Everything sounds more developed. They've embraced the few qualities I praised in my previous review--it's decidedly more psychedelic with flutes on most tracks, sitars, they even jam a bit. Most notable is how the songs themselves are more fleshed out with some nuances throughout. This is way better than that sterilized garage rock sound. The songs sound a bit like 13th Floor Elevators songs with more nuance but less energy. I still can't help but feel like they don't have a knack for melodies though, and the cover of "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" is painfully missing some point.

Heres some avantgarde jazz that makes me happy.
>>
>Vapor Drawings - Mark Isham
>meme-core, New Age, Jazz

Surprisingly competent for a New Age album. I don't think you could call this elevator music, for how active some of the tracks are. Sympathy and Acknowledgement stirs underneath layered synth patterns, after the collagic opening of "Many Chinas". And apparently, the trumpet you hear throughout the album is actually played by Isham himself.

Isham isn't afraid to be light-hearted, dark, or even patriotic. Meme aesthetic aside, the album is compositionally sound. Plenty of samples for Vaporwave artists to use. If it's still alive.

8/10

>McCoy Tyner - The Real McCoy
>Post-Bop

Elvin Jones on drums = AT LEAST a 7/10

And hearing McCoy Tyner's piano for the first time, way more enjoyable and expressive than Herbie. This album doesn't seek to impress on technicality overall, as Joe Henderson doesn't dwell in atonal sound, and instead constructs very accessible and enjoyable songs.

8/10

>Women - Women
>Pop-Psychedelic-Post-Punk-Rock

Faded and thick rock/punk with some nice vocal harmonies. I immediately recognized "Black Rice"'s chorus hook, somehow having heard it before. Chad VanGaalen's production often leaves in static and crunches, most obviously in "Sag Harbor Bridge". And I KNOW it wasn't my player, after manipulating the track volume. I also gotta mention that "Flashlights" is an excellent climax to an otherwise laidback album.

It's strange that the spoken and monotone vovcals are hidden behind the bright and crass instrumentals, because it makes this album feel more like pop punk with some of its melodies, more experimental in its shorter tracks. This mixture of genres keeps the album kicking during its short runtime.

This reminds me of Liars or She Bit Her Lip, one of the seemingly endless shoegaze/rock bands that rapidly fell in and out of relevance in the past decade. But at the same time, this album was refreshing after all the bleep I listened to, and very succinct.

>V/A - Mono No Aware
>Ambient, Prog Electronic

A nice collection of selections from such noticeable artists as Helm, ADR, Yves Tumor, and M.E.S.H. 16 different artists all have a say in constructing a coherent album, and there really is no downside to listening and finding an artist that resonates.

7/10

>James Holden - The Inheritors
>IDM, Microhouse

this is literally a better, more intricate version of Providence - Nathan Fake. Sorry Fish/trip.

I'm already impressed by how Holden manages to make the opener feel like it's swinging slightly. In fact, on many of these tracks, there's a certain feeling behind them that doesn't keep it in a "progressive electronic" category-- it's dynamic, and sucked in sounds from many other places before being created. Footnotes from downtempo, progressive electronic, house, and techno are all present in many of these tracks, often one after the other.

Biggest issue for me is that while each track flows very nicely, nothing jumps out as me as actually memorable. It's stuck between being catchy and immersive, leaning more towards the latter.

Give it a listen if you liked Nicolas Jaar - Space is Only Noise.

7/10

>The Bug - Angels and Devils
>UK Bass, Grime

Guest appearances on 10/12 tracks, with some semi-interesting production.

This album is split into two sections, based off the album's title. The first 6 tracks are heavy as expected of the Bug, but represent hopelessness of an apocalypse-- Grouper does her ambient whispers, copeland has her hypnagogic pop vocals, Gonjasufi does a whiny soul voice, Miss Red is... there.

'The One' is where the album comes alive, so start from there if you don't want to get bored by the slower first 6 tracks.

'Function' is the standout here, Manga does a good performance compared to some of the other "demons". MC Ride doesn't sound bad on 'Fuck a Bitch', but just feels restrained behind dub instrumentals. 'Fuck You' just ends up sounding funny to me.

>Endless Surface - Television Sky
>Ambient, Downtempo

>call a track "footnotes" and put footsteps in it

Thrives in very thick and deep chords of many variations, pulling some abrasiveness from Yellow Swans and Jefre Cantu but failing to fully build off of it. Hidden Memory is fairly jarring to hear after the serenity of the previous tracks, but Cathedral makes up for it with a surreal field recording from within a church.

Still, it's free to download, and a decent album to work to.

The title track to Liebe ist fucking BANGS

http://i.imgur.com/ttSumMc.jpg

Janelle Monáe - The ArchAndroid (2010)
>contemporary R&B, art pop

So over-ambitious and filled to the brim with ideas that I’m honestly shocked it all works. On this album, Monáe creates one of the most cohesive, well put-together concept albums I’ve ever heard. The whole album flows together beautifully, even the tracks that don’t technically flow into each other work together incredibly well, and many different genres work together beautifully. The upbeat soul of “Dance or Die” and “Tightrope” is the best style here without a doubt, though, as some of the attempts at rock and psychedelia fall flat. The omnipresent guitar solos are a bit tasteless, and of Montreal’s guest contribution is pretty terrible despite their pedigree. Barring some less-than-stellar tracks, a great, incredibly well put-together album.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice - Jesus Christ Superstar [Original Concept Recording] (1970)
>rock opera

I saw Jesus Christ Superstar a long time ago, and a lot of the appeal is definitely lost when you take out the visual aspect, the only thing left is a cheesy husk that really makes no sense conceptually. This is still a pretty fun listen, it’s /so/ exceptionally over-the-top that you can’t help but love it at least a little bit. I usually don’t like Webber, but he does good work here. He combines the two most extravagant genres—show tunes and progressive rock—and amps up the extravagance even more than I thought was possible. Gillian does a nice job in the title role, but Head’s performance of Judas is extraordinary. Even though half the album consists of duds, Head’s throat-scratching vocals are always enthralling to listen to.

John Cale was P much exactly what I expected, couple performances sucked (too much synth, drums not mo tucker, just wank in general) but for the most part it was fun, especially when he picked up the viola and played heroin with fat white family. Stephan Bodzin - Liebe ist... (2007)
>minimal techno, tech house

Subdued techno that still packs a punch. The length is an issue, at nearly eighty minutes it feels like some tracks could have benefited from some trimming, but Bodzin’s grasp of rhythm and texture is second to none. The title track is absolutely insane, somer of the best synth work I’ve eve heard on a techno track, and altogether just one of the best techno tracks I’ve ever heard. Nothing else comes close to it, but it’s still consistent.

3.0+

Lucio Battisti - Emozioni (1970)
>pop

Doesn’t even come close to the Technicolor pop suites of Anima latina, here Battisti treats us to a decidedly generic, unremarkable collection of songs. Appropriately bombastic, with nice arrangements and vocals, but everything feels so hollow and there aren’t any good melodies to grasp on to. The progressive elements also feel quite shoehorned in, with ill-fitting tempo changes plaguing a couple tracks. A weak album from an otherwise solid artist.

post-feelist - 4.33

>Current 93 - Black Ships Ate the Sky
Defiently need to give this another re-listen. Plenty of aspects I liked but really didn't deliver very well.
5/11

>Simon Wickham-Smith & Richard Youngs - Ceaucescu
Didn't like one of Richard youngs other albums, most of my same problems apply here. The plauge of the draining noisy electric guitar is present here too.
4+/11

>Ghédalia Tazartès - Diasporas
Throat singing (ew) with some interesting though still bland musique concrète elements.
4+/11

From listening to a lot of post-feelist's recs this is 100% his taste. All the albums he loves tend to have some traits to them that I can't describe which I don't like.

>Gorillaz - Demon Days
Some really good songs here (O Green World, Dirty Harry, Every Planet We Reach is Dead, November has Come) but the rest are mostly bleh, especially the last 4 or so tracks. It sounds almost like Damon made the albun in chronological order and got lazier toward the end. A lot of these songs also overstay their
welcome by one or two minutes. 3/5

>David Bowie - Earthling
Didn't expect to like this one nearly as much as I did. I'm a sucker for good breakbeat, but this album isn't particularly original since the genre was about on its way out when this album released. But Bowie does it very well, especially coupled with his singing, and does a good job mixing it up throughout the album. 4/5

>Lil Yachty - Teenage Emotions
Fucking WHY YOU DOING THIS TO US.. STOP with the "ballads" and romantic shit. I am a big fan of Lil Boat, but that's because it's full of bangers, the type of song he for whatever reason decided to not attempt here. I miss those sharp warm synths man.
2/5
>Gucci Mane & Metro Boomin - Drop Top Wop
Everything after the 4th track was just really damn good (after going back, the first 4 tracks were good to, just not as great). Loved the production and beats. Songs like "Dance with the Devil" are exactly what I want for that nightclub aesthetic. Packed full of melancholic high-life bangers. Didn't top Carti for 2017 hip hop, but it was a close contestant.

>Boredoms - Super æ
Although many of the instrumental sections were very interesting, this was definitely longer than it should have been. A lot of it felt like directionless wankery too. The percussion was the main highlight. Also, Pop Tatari is better.
3/5
>Can - Future Days
Actually VERY surprised I liked this as much as I did, because iirc I gave this a 2.5/5 or something when I first heard it. Use to not be a CAN fan, guess that's not the case anymore. This felt like a hot tub in music form.. this felt like walking through a heavy tropical fog. I loved the aesthetic of it and how easy of a listen it was. Heard it described as Sims-esque music, and that's a pretty accurate description, which is a good thing because I fucking love the Sims soundtrack and vibe. Overall highlight was the last quarter of "Bel Air" (those drums.. jfc). Very excited for the day where I can hear this in an appropriate environment, such as with a margarita on some island.
4/5
>Fela Ransome Kuti & Africa 70 - Expensive Shit
Sooo groovy. Really loved the keyboard, wasn't as enjoyable in the sections that didn't include it. I could see this album growing on me though.

Tried the following albums earlier;
Faust - Self-titled. Brilliant album loved it especially the more electronic/fuzzy sections and the use of sound-effects in general, first krautrock album I've listened to.
>Neu! - Self-titled. Second krautrock album I've listened to, knew about this for years and so was very hyped up only to be let down massively, its essentially a motorik beat with pretty much nothing happening sonically for 30 minutes other than the occasional tinny squeal and dual-panning, I don't get why this is considered a masterpiece, let alone "good" in the first place to be honest.
>Discordance Axis - The Inalienable Dreamless - Haven't listened to any grindcore other than Car Bomb though I had a pretty solid image of what it was going to be like, and it was mostly correct, albeit the screaming was even more incomprehensible to the extent where it became what I term vocal Merzbow, loved the guitars however, I'd say its a mixed bag.

I'm kinda torn on Demilich, the guitar riffs were some of the best I've heard thus far although the vocals made me feel kinda sick, found some of the later tracks to be quite entertaining, particularly enjoyed Rape Embalmed Beauty Sleep & Erecshryinol. Since my Spotify account (no bully pls) just gave me the whole "epic collection dude XD" schpiel I'll make Nick Cave the next thing I listen to though in chronological order. Will probably take a while before I reach the albums on the chart, I hear he gets better with every record, is that true?

Hell yeah, Demilich has some great songwriting no doubt but I can see how the vocals might put off someone. Personally I love frogs in my metal and I think they also fit the music pretty nicely.
As for Nick Cave you're in for a wild ride.
>I hear he gets better with every record, is that true?
I wouldn't say each is better than the last, but he's still pretty damn consistent and has a lot to offer throughout his discography, his first and last records are total opposites and along the way he's done plenty of stuff to keep you entertained. Are you familiar with the Birthday party by the way?
>>
>>73025800
Never heard of the Birthday Party until this post, didn't realise Cave was in a band beforehand, should I try their material first?
>>
>>73025901
Up to you I'd say. If you enjoy crazy and raw post-punk it should be up your alley. I was asking because it's probably what's closer to his first few releases: from her to eternity and the firstborn is dead, and to a lesser extent kicking against the pricks so you'd know what you're getting into.

Anyway getting into the whole discog of Cave without having heard much of him is kinda weird, what made you want to do it?
>>
>>73026061
Used to get recommended him on chart threads (haven't been on one for some time), this thread and my futile attempt to slowly clear my backlog. I know little about Nick Cave other than the surprising consistency of his albums (if reviews are anything to go by), I don't really know what to expect though, I get the idea it'll be kinda like a more musically competent version of Joy Division with short-stories for lyrics.

Nina Simone - I Put a Spell on You (1965)
>vocal jazz, soul, rhythm & blues

Simone at her poppiest, without a doubt. Only “Feeling Good” reaches the level of fire and brimstone that even a single second of Little Girl Blue possesses, besides that track it’s pretty much jaunty, over-orchestrated pop tunes. Simone’s vocals are still great, of course, and the renditions of the title track and Jacques Brel’s “Ne me quitte pas” are both awesome, but then again you’ve got “Marriage Is for Old Folks” and “Gimme Some”. Not only do these to tracks completely contradict each other message-wise, they’re both just pretty bad from a musical standpoint. A livelier, less overdone band could make this more than it is, an overblown weak spot in Simone’s discography.

2.0+

Tom Waits - The Heart of Saturday Night (1974)
>singer/songwriter, piano blues

This is very much a continuation of the booze-soaked, late-night aesthetic of Closing Time (one of my favorite albums ever), but it’s a bit livelier and more playful. The livelier tracks are the highlight, they foreshadow his work on albums like Rain Dogs while still carving out their own, unique, beat poetry-influenced sound. The melancholy is doesn’t as well as it is on Closing Time, with a lot of melodrama hurting the tracks that seemed so natural on his debut. Can’t fault it too much though, it’s Tom Waits, come on.

3.0-

Funkadelic - Funkadelic (1970)
>funk rock

Despite having Funkadelic introduced to me at a very young age by my superfan of a father, this is the first full album of theirs I’ve heard, and I’m a fan. There’s a lot of blues rocky stuff that doesn’t hit me at all, which luckily doesn’t take much away from how damn good the funk is. The anthemic, almost call-and-response vocals are enchanting, and the guitar work is consistently extraordinary. Most importantly, it grooves like a motherfucker.

3.0+
>>
>>73026199
Eh, I wouldn't really compare him with Joy Division. When Nick does post-punk he also tends to get a little bluesy as well. I suppose either your funeral... my trial or let love in are probably what might appeal most to a JD fan.

Listened to five different /mu/core albums recently. Here's my thoughts
>MBDTF
7/10
Liked a good bit of it. Kanye's production is undeniably fantastic here. My problems were mostly with the fact I don't find it interesting to listen to rich people complain abou how fucked up they are at very least here. Didn't really find myself that absorbed at any point listening to it. Will probably listen to it again though. Also the last part of Blame Game is really fucking cringey.
>Kid A
7.5-8/10
Liked it a lot. Didn't nessecarily blow me away but it all worked. Will definitely give a second listen. Also curious if I should listen to OK Computer or maybe Amnesiac next.
>Merriweather Post Pavilion
8/10
Really enjoyed this. Again nothing really hit me in a major way but it all was good. In particular the just the general sound was fun to hear. Would like to know about similar albums.
>Trout Mask Replica
7.5-8/10
My feelings are fairly mixed on this. On one hand the general style made the album engaging the whole way through I was always waiting to see what would happen next either with what Beefheart would say or what next bit of utterly insane playing would happen next. But considering the nature of the album I feel it could have been at least a bit shorter. It might just be me being an ADHD retard but by the end it I was without a doubt glad it had.

The Necks - Hanging Garden

I’m not a huge fan of minimalism, mostly because I don’t know much about it - but this was a super intriguing album. Very repetitive, cyclical jazz record, with little details and shifts occurring gradually. Maybe hearing this concept coming from more of a jazz group is what got me interested, idk. Gonna have to come back to this soon and potentially explore more by these guys, I’ve heard great things.

3.5/5

Rimsky-Korsakov - Scheherazade

Pretty nice classical piece. Still very out of the loop on classical as a whole but the underlying story and four part series is definitely cool. If I try and describe what I liked/didn’t like, I’m gonna sound like an idiot t b h.

3

Billy Nicholls - Would You Believe

Another great contribution to the 60s psych pop movement. Apparently, this kid heard Pet Sounds and decided “I’m going to make the British version”. Label issues got in the way, the album was shelved and it wasn’t released officially until the late 90s. Unfortunate that this isn’t more popular, there’s some great baroque/psych cuts on here.

3.5

John Zorn - Spy vs. Spy

Zorn dedicates an entire album to Ornette Coleman. It’s mostly his tracks ramped up to the max and played at a ridiculous speed. Very impressive from a musical standpoint - I mean I wish I could play this fast. But honestly, it isn’t all that entertaining aside from a few slower cuts on side 2. Cool in concept but Zorn is not my thing.

2.5

King Tee - Tha Triflin’

Five years after his debut, Tee definitely catches up to the times. His flow is tighter, the beats are funkier and everything about this is 100% more modern. There’s a charm to his debut but it feels dated and corny. Over 2 records, he’s seemingly gone from a random Biggie influencer to his own name. There’s even some guest verses from Tha Alkaholics (his crew) and Ice Cube. Probably as good as/better than his debut even if they're different styles.

Nice to read your updates, it's cool to see someone working through this for the first time. I can see what you're saying about MBDTF, some of the lyrics can come off as a little meh in context.

It's probably my AOTY so far next to Angles 9 - Disappeared Behind the Sun. Blue Mountain from that Necks album is easily my favorite song of the year though, maybe of the past 2 or 3 years even.

You might want to check Angles 9 out too if you like big band jazz like Fire! Orchestra. No vocals though.

It was probably matter of not paying that much attention the first time around. It really is some good as fuck orchestrated pop.

>Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back
Not really getting the hype here. Generally tedious and boring throughout, with annoying live show samples for some reason. I feel that ideas are recycled constantly, and even though the album is only about 50 minutes long, it felt like hours. Still, there are a couple good tracks, and the rapping itself is great. 2/5

>Stereolab - Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night
This is the kinda album that hits the spot for me. Stereolab mashes genres together in this album, and very skillfully so. Each track is bubbling with electronic glitches and bleeps, a sporadic jazz influence, and usually more than that. It's messy and insane in a very soothing, intricate way, which is an amazing achievement. Blue Milk and Op Hop Detonation, in particular, are fantastic. But CaPGPVitMN wears thin at times, and could use a bit more polish. 4/5

I'll get the last 3 tomorrow. Also, in between the creation and (slow) completion of this chart, I've manage to amass even more secondhand CDs from thrift stores and garage sales, enough to make another, bigger chart.

Wire - 154 (1979)
>post-punk, art punk

I’m debating whether or not I like this more than Chairs Missing, but whatever the outcome of that debate may be, this is still a near-masterpiece. Wire’s artsiness can work against them here. Some of the synth-led tracks don’t go much of anywhere, which is a pretty minor complaint considering how fucking good the punkier tracks are. The punk tracks still have a lot of experimentation to them, most of them being built off industrial/ambient soundscapes, and the combination works absolutely perfectly. It’s basically Marquee Moon cross-bred with Here Come the Warm Jets and Neu!, what an album.

3.0+

Robbie Basho - The Grail & the Lotus (1966)
>american primitivism

A continuation of The Seal of the Blue Lotus, more or less. Basho’s early works show a unique guitarist already removed from the work of his contemporaries, but also as a guitarist that’s not really confident enough to go all out with his experiemental tendencies. Basho’s style of playing is obviously rather experimental, but the structures of his pieces are still rooted in the blues, and there’s a real odd dichotomy between the two that doesn’t work very well. “The Dharma Prince” is a tremendous piece, but the whole album is still a far cry from what Basho would do later in his career.

2.5+

Flora Molton & Eleanor Ellis - Etats-Unis Gospel (1994)
>country blues, gospel

Pleasant, down-to-earth gospel. It took a while for Molton’s vocals to grow on me, they take a couple of tracks before they really come in to their own, but they’ve got so much damn soul to them, and an almost childlike quality to them at points. Ellis’ guitar work is outstanding, as is Molton’s work on the slide guitar. It’s too long, with a lot of standards that I know performed slightly better by other artists, which would probably hurt this more if it weren’t so damn likeable.

>Bomb Squad production
>Recycled

Probably won't help your enjoyment at all but
here's quote from a Bomb Squad that (imo) explains that style - “Musicians said ‘[rappers weren't] making music, we’re making noise’. So I said ‘noise?? Wanna hear noise?’ I want to be music’s worst nightmare!”.

That whole chaotic, almost apocalyptic atmosphere on there is what I love so much about it. Plus there's a Slayer sample in there which actually works (coming from someone who hates rock samples). It can definitely come off as grating at first though, wasn't my thing when I first heard that.

Idk just figured I'd give my two cents

Gorguts - The Erosion of Sanity (1993)
>technical death metal

Obscura this is most certainly not. Very standard death metal is all well and good, but when you know that the band can do so much more the experience is a bit soured, and there are some issues with the album no matter what. Most tracks are structured the same way, and all the “technical” aspects are just fetal stages of ideas that would be fully realized on Obscura. A bit of a disappointment, but hey, they’d definitely get a lot better.

2.0+

Vivian Girls - Vivian Girls (2008)
>garage punk, lo-fi indie

A vaguely tuneful mess of noisy guitars, but not nearly as cool as that sounds. Not only are the songs here just not good at all, the performances and production are both piss-poor, and every single note here seems entirely derivative of better bands from the ‘80s and ‘90s like Beat Happening and Tiger Trap. Pretty worthless.

0.5

Van Morrison - Moondance (1970)
>singer/songwriter, folk rock

The soul in Morrison’s voice and music that people talk about is completely lost upon me, I really only hear this as a super tepid folk rock album. Astral Weeks has a lot of characteristics I love, mainly the expressive, full-bodied arrangements, and that’s completely lost here. He sheds his Celtic influence and a lot of his jazz influence, leaving the listener with generic folk rock through and though .Morrison’s vocals are always nice (not really soulful though…) as is the title track, but that’s about all that does anything for me.

Cat Stevens - Tea for the Tillerman (1970)
>singer/songwriter, folk rock

Some more unobtrusive, bland as sin folk rock. Stevens’ vocals are really nice, and the general soft, chill attitude of the album is pleasant to listen to, but it’s just /way/ too soft to make a mark. The arrangements are either cheesy or too understated, the songwriting is middle-of-the-road, it’s just a really modest album, absolutely to a fault.

2.0

Arab on Radar - Yahweh or the Highway (2001)
>noise rock, no wave

There are some absolutely banging moments here reminiscent of the best no wave or the best Lightning Bolt tracks (the drum production sounds just like Chippendale’s) which keep me interested even when the bulk of this is ultra-formless and grating. The vocals are funny yet irritatingly blunt and childish, and the guitar work is just too damn screechy for me. Soak the Saddle is better.

Rambly late night review incoming

Genesis - Foxtrot
>Prog Rock

I’ve never been a big prog guy but I can certainly see the appeal of this one. Gabriels’ vocals on some of the tracks are perfect, like “Time Table” where he just soars above with these great melodies. The bass is consistently tight and groovy too, adding that little “umf” underneath to tie everything all together. I found myself focusing on that for large portions of the album, it bounces around so perfectly. The drumming is also tight, as you’d expect from Collins. And the organ is certainly a nice touch.

At times, this can be too over the top though. The eight minute “Get ‘Em Out By Friday” verges too much on corny despite having some great ideas. There’s a really cool atmosphere, especially on the later 2-3 minutes - but the constant switch in characters and blunt lyrics makes it kind of an annoying listen. Which is weird because the more poetic lyrics on “Watcher of the Skies” feel much more natural and it’s a style I’m not typically a huge fan of.

My usual problem with prog is the noodly instrumentation - but this stays relatively tight and concise (aside from stretches of “Supper’s Ready”). The lyrics kind of wore on me throughout, even though I think they fit the atmosphere. They felt like a pretentious addition during certain moments, I’m not quite sure how to describe it. The fact that I had to follow along with the various characters and underlying stories was fine but I don’t listen to music like I’m reading damn Game of Thrones idk. If we’re being honest, it was a bit too complex for me at times. While listening to “Supper’s Ready” I couldn’t help but feel like I was watching a play and I was missing the program.

I can appreciate what’s going on here and there’s some damn good music going on. The lyrical concepts are a bit heady for me to enjoy casually though so I’m not sure how often I’d come back to this.

A little late on this one, but I don't think anyone will probably even notice me so let's do this.

Tiny Hazard - Greyland

This album really surprised me. My first impression is that this band really digs them some Bjork. This is not abad thing in the slightest and throughout Greyland they show that, similar to Bjork, their versatility is what makes them special. Within the the first three songs we jump from the dream pop Sesame, to the weird, glitchy and childlike Like a Child to the aggressive punk-y vibe of Sharkwhirl. Greyland's biggest fault would probably be its slower tracks (Lynx, Baby) as most of them do not do a ton for me compared to the energy and creativity of the more up-beat tracks with the exception being Greyland which is a truly song. I still really enjoyed this album. The fact that a track like Little One (almost like a math rock art-pop song) can exist on this record is enough for me to really appreciate it.

Shoutout to transgod for the rec!

Oh there actually isn't a bad album but barring Nocturama, Pricks is probably the least engaging one. Lazarus though is pretty divisive among the fans but I've always seen it as a natural evolution of his strange fascination with Americana culture and mythological tales. More News From Nowhere still the best retelling of the Odyssey yet
>>
Hey, maybe I'll post some more reviews.

>Fruit Bats - Tripper
I can't quite place a finger on why I keep coming back to this. From a casual listen, it sounds like just another revivalist '70s country/folk/psych rock indie band. All done in a conventional way, mind you. But I also think they get something so very right here.

First of all, it's a convincing amalgamation of the early-'70s trends that worked. "Tangie and Ray" is an excellent song in any time that sounds like the type of hit Eric Clapton or The Allman Brothers would've been thrilled with in, say, 1971. And moreover, it has all the production nuances to match--some uptempo tambourine, twangy guitar riffs, the passionate vocals. Really, there's some great, subtle production choices like this throughout, like the mixing of lead guitar and flute on "Heart Like an Orange" that wouldn't have sounded out of place at Watkins Glen in 1973.

At its best it's convincing in that it doesn't come across as some purely cosmetic kitsch, which is all too common in the genre of '00s indie rock bands playing '70s stuff, but rather a sincere extension of what drove that sound in the first place.

7.5/10

>Ultimate Spinach - Behold & See
This is a masterpiece of second-tier psychedelic rock. I say that because it most definitely does not have any widespread appeal next to the psych acts that "made it" with radio play, and there are as many duds as hits. Part of me is sad that they apparently tried to match the commercial levels of, say, Jefferson Airplane, because they just don't sound as good in that respect.

That being said, and as others have pointed out, this hits on this album are some of the most psychedelic songs ever laid to tape. If listeners look past what may now be considered cliche (hey, it's 1968 and this is prototypical, so I encourage you to do so) "Mind Flowers" alone is about as hallucinogenic as music gets. Absolutely essential.

Droning ~tymeshifter who seems to have pretty refined psych taste. Also, I'm going to be traveling through Northern Europe for a few weeks. Is there any way at all to edit charts (ie, add scores) from a phone?

help me schedule 3 albums for the coming week based on Pinegrove - Cardinal

(doesn't mean it has to be genre related)

>I'm going to be traveling through Northern Europe
Where to and more importantly why?

wtf i cant jerk off to this

Copenhagen, Norwegians fjords. I like it all better than the big city.

Anyone seen "Aliens on the Moon", on Netflix? It seems absolutely ridiculous.
>>73039691
Yeah fjords are great as fuck. I'm considering moving to Norway post-exam because of them.
>>
>>73039788
Got some elend recs?
>>
>>73039799
i'd listen to Elend 20 times before listening to those albums
>>
>>73039812
Have you heard a single one of these or just being ignorant?
>>
>>73039826
have you given elend a second chance they're pretty cool
>>
>>73039826
haven't heard a single one of them, but it's not hard to know exactly what they're most likely like (album art + "psych")
>>
>>73039864
This is literally the most low brow thing I've seen posted on this board.

It's getting even worse.

Literally filtered.
>>
>>73039791
Also, yeah, looking most forward to relaxing in the fjords.
>>73039908
I know, it's ok. I just don't like stigmas in music much
>>
>>73039951
let loose a little won't ya friend
>>73039957
it's sort of like if I would post a chart consisting of entirely one of your least favorite genres, like neoclassical-darkwave. you'd assume it's a bad chart but of course you wouldn't know it was, but yeah I was joking

I built a couple of shelves for my mice so they can have more living space with the same footprint in my apartment. Also built a couple of houses. Unfortunately, I built them out of balsa wood, and they eating through this shit like it's made of paper. Big misstake, and it was expensive too (50 euro or so). Gonna use plywood next time.
