The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

>Glam Rock, Pop Rock

Ziggy Stardust didn't do anything spectacular. It didn't blow my mind, it didn't fill me with emotion, and it certainly didn't particularly impress me in anyway.

But I'll be damned if this album isn't interesting, consistent, and polished. It can be surprisingly hard to find those qualities in an album, especially one of this kind. It's nice for an album to just be... thoroughly entertaining.

Also, one of the coolest album titles ever.

blapp - 8.33

>Steve Roach - Structures From Silence
The last track captures staring into space perfectly. It was like seeing it with my own eyes instead of in pictures.
10-/11

>Doopees - Doopee Time
I was feeling a 7- at first until I got up to track 8, then it clicked with me so well.
The weird adventures of these 2 girls through TV, love, doctors, time and space. Enchanting.
9-/11

>Today Is the Day - Willpower
Typical it's ok noise-rock.

The coolest part about this chart is how telling it is of people's personality, taste, and interpretation of music in general.

I know people (me included) shit talk /daily/ pretty often but I think this place pretty often offers genuine discussion about music like no other place on the internet. I wish us success and that we can keep these threads up for a long period of time.

Btw, my albums are incredibly niche imo. I'd be surprised if you like anything besides Minor Threat maybe.

Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz (2010)
>art pop, progressive pop, chamber pop

The richest, most sonically varied album in Stevens’ catalogue. The songwriting on Illinois and Carrie & Lowell is great and all, but they suffer from a stagnant, overdone sound. Here, the songwriting is sometimes too muddled and busy, but his sound is significantly more interesting. It ranges from the electronic beat-fuckery of “Too Much” and “I Want to Be Well” to more subdued pieces like the beautiful “Futile Devices” and “I Walked”. The electronic elements are sometimes misused, like on the title track, the acclaim of which I don’t understand, but they’re often done really well, their vast soundscapes compliment Stevens’ more erratic, herky-jerky vocals well. “Impossible Soul” is a wonderful track, a 26-minute monolith that has nearly now low points. While the album might have some very distinct low points, the presence of this track alone makes it all worthwhile.

3.0

Depeche Mode - Music for the Masses (1987)
>synthpop

Theatricality in music is something I often enjoy, and something I enjoy when done by this band, but this attempt seems really hollow and over-dramatic. The songwriting here is really weak, with big, anthemic choruses and squelching, pseudo-industrial synths being the big focus instead of actual interesting melodies or songs. The synth sounds are admittedly cool, and the vocals are of course great, but I’m left cold by this.

2.0+

Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison (1968)
>country

Damn near like a punk concert. Cash’s demeanor and his stage banter is second to none, he treats the prisoners as equals and really strikes a chord with them. He’s also on top form when it comes to his performance, the songs are energetic and really damn fun, and his vocals are incredible. The slower songs definitely aren’t as great, but this is still a wonderful performance.

3.0+

(1/2)
>>
(2/2)

Rufus Wainwright - Poses (2001)
>singer/songwriter, chamber pop, pop rock

I don’t care for Wainwright’s vocals, but the arrangements surrounding them are quite nice. Very Fiona Apple-esque, the arrangements are sometimes upbeat and rollicking but mostly smoky and subdued. I don’t care for the style at all, but Wainwright writes decent songs and plays them well, even if there are some dull low points.

2.5-

Otis Spann - Otis Spann Is the Blues (1960)
>piano blues

Best piano blues album I’ve ever heard. Still relies far two much on typical twelve-bar chord progressions, which is usually a killer for me, yet Spann performs these otherwise generic songs with so much grit and power, and the weird, subtle guitar playing accentuates his passion and rawness like nothing else could.

My guess: the people who have discovered Twin Peaks via netflix will hate the show because it won't be 100% self-referential and fan-service like they all expect it to be. There won't be any "damn fine coffee" or "cherry pie" but will probably throw some people off and thus maybe be a flop.

Sorry if this review sucks I'm a bottle of red deep

Hardcore music like this works much better when it has defined textures/melodies and isn't just basically "loud-gaze", which is what made the last track, by far the most original and expansive piece in this entire album so unique and satisfying. If you're a noise boy maybe you'd like it, but it was mostly kinda bad.
>>
>>72902218
>>72902218
I see this sentiment a lot, and perhaps I'm not cynical enough but I don't think that many people have that expectation. Also I'm seeing the assumption that's it's going to be entirely Lynchian madness. I have no qualms with that at all, but Mark Frost is still working on it as well.

Sorry if this review is too close to my previous one, I didn't expect to listen to another album tonight

R.E.M. - Automatic for the People

>Alt Rock, Pop Rock

Each song in Automatic for the People has some sort of element that pushes it just out of the garbage zone of the typical alt-rock songs and ballads--whether it's the songwriting, a classical string instrument or something else, it's somewhat unique and fresh. It's something about this album's sound.

Still, it's not particularly creative or emotional (except Everybody Hurts, that one is painful) and doesn't really do anything for me. Like I said, it's not usually different from the typical, if at all.

You know this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlBskd3IaNw

Anyway. The album I would rate decent to strong 8. It's quite short to. But it's got some genuine 10/10 moments in it. Riverside is so good to listen to that one song if you unsure about this. I highly recommend if you like indie rock, radiohead or pink floyd.

Been listening to more albums that I have downloaded or otherwise put off for a while, of which includes the following;
>Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables - Thought it was going to be some preachy communist freak-out garnering acclaim from left-wing music magazines though in reality its very good, enjoyed it and some of the album's themes resonated with me to an extent that I wasn't expecting. Gonna give this way more listens and try the rest of their catalog.
>Dr. Octagon - Dr. Octogonecologyst. Coming from someone who usually dislikes hip-hop this album surprised me in its relaxed flow and greater sense of humour rather than stuff that seems as if I'd have to be African-American to "get" it (and by that I mean simulating some sort of ego-trip without paying for the consequences).
>Kanye West - Late Registration. Actually enjoyed this album unlike his MBDTF, TLOP and Yeezus, really liked Diamonds From Sierra Leone and Crack Music, kinda prefer the more conscious version of Kanye even if it comes of as a little preachy, the music in general seemed to have more soul and texture to it rather the the ironically maximalist nature of his later works. Going to give it numerous more listens though before I fully evaluate it.
>Talk Talk - The Party's Over. Didn't want to rush into their later material so decided to listen in chronological order, I honestly quite liked this though have only listened a couple of times so far, love Hate and of course Talk Talk in particular. Want to smother myself in Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock when the time is right and I can truly appreciate it.

Otherwise been listening more to Burial and more of the same artists I'm familiar with, must say that Burial's self-titled is brilliant, love the more ambient sections of it and honestly can't believe that's dubstep but hey-ho.

Pretty good, however the first track was considerably better then the rest. It seemed like it changed tones after that.. wish it would've kept up the weird shitty feeling I get from listening to field recordings/ sound collages, unfortunately it didn't. Regardless, interesting stuff.

Yeah this album just irritated me honestly. I hope I didn't come into it predetermined to dislike it though, because the genres listed as Glitch Pop/ Folktronica, along with the album art, made me think "fuck, it's going to be one of THESE albums". Felt like it tried too hard to be childlike and quirky. Oh and the guys' voice was horrible too.

David Sylvian - Secrets of the Beehive (1987)
>art pop, ambient pop

Ultra sophisticated pop for fancy adults. Think the Blue Nile with a tad less cheese or Mark Hollis’ self-titled record but not as good. It might not be as good as some of its contemporaries, but it’s still quite good. Sylvian’s voice is perfectly fit for this style of music (no wonder why “Nightporter” is the best Japan song), and the arrangements are gorgeous and tactful. Maybe a little bit boring, but gorgeous and short enough to keep the listener engaged.

3.0-

Lloyd Cole and The Commotions - Rattlesnakes (1984)
>jangle pop

Jangle pop, man, I just can’t get into it. The songs are alright, Cole’s voice is great, the whole album has a really melancholic feel to it, but it sounds so damn cheap and synthetic, especially the guitars. When this synthetic style is embraced, like with the drum machines on “Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken?” (now I know where the Camera Obscura song comes from), it’s great, but when a more hard-edged rock style is still attempted it’s really awkward. One of the better jangle pop records I’ve heard, but with a few exceptions it’s still just not my thing.

2.5+

Roxy Music - Roxy Music (1972)
>art rock, glam rock

Even with Eno on board I wasn’t expecting this to be quite so weird. It is essentially an Eno solo album, Ferry and the rest of the band take a backseat to Eno’s synth experiments. Their influence still does shine through, and as such Eno’s contributions aren’t as fleshed out as they are on his solo records. The straight-up glam rock is the best facet of this album, because it’s such an idiosyncratic take on the style. Ferry’s vocals might be straight out of the Bowie school, but everything surrounding him is incredibly futuristic and mechanical. Has a potential to be great, but nothing about that is realized.

Aпopєa - Ha pєкaхъ Baвл҃нcкыхъ
[1988]

This was quite good: liturgies, tribal/primitive drumming, weird production, it makes for a nice experience. Me I'm familiar with old eastern europe and the likes and this obviously resonated more with me because of that, but I still feel like it's just a novelty (a good one at that though) and if it had more substance it could've been a much better record.

Revamping this:

>The Mothers of Invention - Absolutely Free
The most unsung albums from a fairly misunderstood/unsung artists. I could go on for days about how impressive it was for the time, being one of the first rock albums to use tape manipulation (as well as a cavelcade of other crazy shit contained in Brown Shoes Don't Make It), arguably the first album that could be considered "progressive" (side A and B are both treated as one song, as well as having lyrical and melodic theming) as well as being more outlandish than it's predecessor yet more refined than its successor. Like it or not, this is one of the genre's first bold artistic statements.

But like I said, it's not the timing of these elements that makes Absolutely Free so enjoyable. Rather, it's the conjunction of all of these elements being pulled off so flawlessly. This is what I love about early Zappa. All experimentation feels like it has purpose, rather than the meaning coming from the experimentation on top of that. On top of that, through and through it's just a genuinely fun album with plenty variety and packed to the brim with satisfying shit. If I had to give one flaw to this album it's probably be "Uncle Bernie's Farm" is a confusing mess of a song that I've never really liked in the slightest. It's an obvious blemish that breaks the flow of the second suite that I don't understand in the slightest. It should've been replaced with either of the bonus tracks, which are MUCH better.

The bonus tracks are great too, but I would argue they significantly break up the flow of the album, though thankfully they are placed in between the suites rather than slapped on the end of the album which I think is a good choice.

>Pharoah Sanders - Karma
IT'S JUST A LOVE SUPREME BUT BETTER.

SUCK IT NERDS ;P

10 xDDDDDD

Nah but for real though

This album radiates pure beauty. The bright melodies with small hints of sorrow and pain sprinkled through, astounding saxophone work, and some of the best vocals on any album ever. The biggest complaint I have is that "Colors" is just the song I already heard but shorter and kind of shittier. Also, I really don't think the length of this song really lends to its overall quality. If anything, I would say the repetitious nature of it is a defining detractor.

Of course A Love Supreme is better, but that's only because it's FUCKING A LOVE SUPREME. There's maybe a dozen albums better than it and it's not even by that much. I can see why comparisons are made, being that they're both early Spiritual Jazz with somewhat similar baselines in parts, but I still think hating one or the other for this reason is just insanity. If you don't like both to at least some extent you're a bad person simple as that.

>Tuxedomoon - Desire
One of the best albums ever made that I'd rec to probably no one.

I seriously can't see this appealing to anyone other than me really. Sure it has great songwriting and a dark, brooding atmosphere that I think could be appreciated by anyone, but overall I can imagine the details in it being bothersome to many. The mechanical, cold drum machines + string arrangements + sax solos + extremely post-punk typical vocals are all characteristics of this album that I love the shit out of.

The songwriting on each track is suburb. The way the sax + post-punk vibe all fuse together make for an extremely original atmosphere that few albums I've ever hear achieve. If you're looking for tangible atmosphere in an album that isn't from ambiance, then this is a hard rec. The really anxious vibe radiating from here really scares the shit out of me and I love it. Every track is superb.

Of course, I have to mention the things I don't like, which are...um...

Wait

I don't think I dislike any of this.

Holy shit.

ISSA TEN BAYBE

Maybe I'm just gay for minimal synth albums with tree silhouettes idk. This album is phenomenal, but only try it if you know this is your sort of thing.

So I started off really not liking this, thinking how the violin, when played jarringly like this, is just extremely irritating to the ears.. and not the good kind of irritating (yes, this is a thing). However, it did grow on me. The plucking parts were great, and even the parts that at the start irritated me began to become more and more interesting. This was really intriguing to listen to honestly, however poseurcore it may be. I still don't know if I'd call it "good" though.. it's really hard to rate this actually. It's not something to listen to for entertainment, but rather for a unique experience. Definitely interesting to say the least.

I'm usually not a fan of vocals taking up so much focus, but the backing instrumentation is given enough room to breathe and for the most part the vocal performances were great. Good Morning was the only real weak track imo. I was surprised by how simple and calm the first half was. I was expecting more onkyo and noise freakouts when I saw Yoshihide's name on the tin. Of course I was then even more satisfied when Eureka descended into madness. What a way to end the album.

Kept returning to Antwood - Virtuous.scr, definitely growing on me. Better example of the recent growth of Post-House music.

>Shoji Aketagawa, Kan Mikami, Toshiaki Ishizuka - Daikanjyo
>Avant-Folk Improv

and 5 minutes in this is more engaging and angry than the one metal album on my chart

It's always a great sign in an improvised album, when the group is able to coalesce their roles and sound around each other. This album not only succeeds in that, but the individual parts are strong as well. The piano on track 2, for example, leads the group into a flamenco of some sorts, managing to be instantly catchy. Kan Mikami's spoken word is passionate to the point of being melodramatic on occasion, but otherwise enhances each song's mood.

The third track is deliberate with its drums, though not exactly showing that they're competent until standalone areas like Rhythm. By that point of the album, I was just glad this wasn't static on either side of the noise spectrum in each song, as the first track suggested. This could have been an awful listen if they simply repeated the "quiet... THEN LOUD" dynamic in every track, but the group isn't afraid to settle into some grooves before blasting what they could. The guitar and piano are probably what allows this to happen, melodically.

7/10, expecting this to be a grower.

>Skip James - 1931 sessions
>Blues, black guy with geetar

Blind Willie Johnson, with a simpler and pleasant voice. Special Rider Blues's recording quality makes me question if it was included to be experimental.

>Suicide - Suicide
>Synth Punk, No Wave,

I think what makes this more enjoyable as a No Wave album is Alan Vega's vocals-- clearly punk, but not quite speaking down on its listener. One could say they're whiny, but with the highly repetitive background synth and drums, it gives the impression that they're resigned and world-weary, sometimes even maddened. The trance-like atmosphere, catchy melodies, and choice electronics, it's clear that this album has given direction to dozens of modern groups.

The artificial percussion in particular is what makes this very enjoyable. Gone are the gunshot snares and overwhelming cymbals of punk; have some heartbeat 808's and artificial shakers to replace that. That, and the vintage synth isn't hard for someone like me like.

Frankie Teardrop is also GOAT holy shit, picks things right back up right when you think the album is beginning to droop into mediocrity

and Che is also VERY great

Not the scariest or tense album that some people make it out to be, but damn is it smooth.

8/10

>Lumigraph - Nautically Inclined
>Oustider House

A bit of lo-fi influence with some of the blown out rhythms and gritty samples, in an otherwise decent house album. The most industrial it gets is Tampa Awaits, where the album's noise reaches a high.

Some enjoyable moments include the piano sample in Patty Hearst, which is probably the one time I didn't hate a piano being played with House. Dorsia is the best example of low fidelity used to great effect in this album-- the 16 bit string and underwater drone go really well together. Wavewatcher is one of the livelier and easily enjoyable tracks, along with Sugar-Dunk.

Also noticed that Spaceblunts is almost a vaporwave tribute, with a constant, shrill mechanical ring in the background.

A welcome change from the normal silky smooth sounds of modern house, but not really sticking with me.

>Autechre - Incunabula
>Techno

This album feels more like Autechre first spawned from Space Ambience-- their progress from here to LP5 is quite clear. Makes me appreciate the latter album a bit more, when I decided to hear it again. Not enough to enjoy it as the transition album it was, but the usage of original percussion.

It's clear that this album thrived in the same time as Richard D. James' SAW. It's also clear that this album, along with Amber, may be the only evidence of Autechre's human side, before they changed into what they are today.

But god, there's just something about their music that I can't like. It just feels so basic for electronic music, even when I recognize their syncopation and arrangement. Maybe I'm just imagining that they're pushing their "oh god we're just robots" aesthetic too lightly, and they end up feeling wishy-washy because of it.

Or maybe it's that they're one of the poster children of IDM. 5 to 10 minute tracks, predictably trudging through echoing patterns and structures, not really making themselves memorable, not really rooted to the idea behind all their music-- it's frustrating, because I WANT to like them but there's some kind of autstic blockade in my mind or something

Hopefully, I'll find something I can thoroughly enjoy within their discography. Maybe Confield, maybe Amber, maybe even Elseq.

Torts. Overall: 3.67
>Bathory - The Return......
Very solid black metal. Not exactly unique or outstanding in any aspect, but that's not a problem because I just really like this genre. Enjoyable to listen to, appropriately evil.
3.5/5
>Ensemble Dastan & Salar Aghili - The Endless Ocean
First time hearing anything in this genre, and I can definitely say I've been missing out. This was great.. phenomenal instrumentation (especially that rolling/ rapid percussion.. so good) and the singing was very emotional. Could really feel the soul of whichever Middle Eastern country this came from. Going to have to give this a relisten soon, because fuck it was good, just barely didn't hit the 4.5/5 mark, but I could see it reaching there in the future.
4/5
>Uun Budiman - Banondari
Enjoyable, and my first time hearing Jaipongan. I really should listen to more of these Eastern genres, they're interesting. Loved the instrumentation, her voice fit well too. For some reason it doesn't strike me as being very memorable, unfortunately.

>Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Incredible. Everything here is just about perfect - the instrumentation, the songwriting, the effort put into the songs themselves. Not a 5, though, just because it's not really unique enough--like Wilco took the best of everything done before it and assembled it into one pristine work of art. No weak spots, all of it amazing. 4.5/5

RYM tells me you guys don't like this one nearly as much as I do

>Weezer - Blue Album

Harmless, mostly derivative pop tunes. Not terribly interesting or innovative, but solid choice for something to put you in a good mood, and for easy background listening. It's also kind of hard not to like Buddy Holly and Surf Wax America.3/5

>The B-52's - Cosmic Thing

Great new wave songs that have a lot of relistenability and personality to them. It falters--a lot-- in the back half, but otherwise fantastic. 3.5/5

RYM also tells me that none of you have listened to this. Go do it, even if it's just for the first half.

If you want complexity, you'll like Draft and Untilted, albums I've listened to countless times and still feel like I've barely penetrated them.

Have fun listening to Confield, it's my all-time favorite album and Ae is my all time favorite band, if you would even call them a band. Incunabula is great (or at least I think), and I love that sort of watery, shiny feel the production gives the album. They made it on dirt cheap, secondhand equipment because they didn't have the money at the time.

I'm really liking the new Twin Peaks so far. I'm getting a serious Eraserhead vibe from the whole thing. There's no epic black coffee/cherry pie references but the atmosphere is pretty on point.

Also, I think people forget that season 2 of the original show has only a handful of good episodes. Wouldn't be surprised if the new season surpasses that.

3/5 is good enough to warrant another listen, 2.5 is what i use for 'that was okay but kinda boring and I can't see myself relistening anytime soon'. Anything below that is varying degrees of shit.
