can you figure out a songs key by transcribing the vocals? and if yes, how do you know which scale?
>>
>>72702323
You could figure out the key of a song by transcribing the vocal melody, but once you're at that point the scales used for the melody should be easy to figure out. Use and instrument to play the melody and then see if your hand remains within a particular scale box. Idk, I don't think that thinking of vocal melodies in terms of scales is particularly helpful.
>>
>>72702323
>can you figure out a songs key by transcribing the vocals
Sure, as long as the vocals aren't super simple and are more than a few repeated notes

>how do you know which scale
Intervals and context. Know the intervals of various scales. Listen for the tonic (the note the scale is based on and brings a feeling of resolution)

But really you should just be able to hear right away what the scale is without separating parts or even identifying notes. Learn about a bunch of scales and modes and familiarize yourself with their specific sounds and feelings and know the intervals

I'm thinking of switching out my RGs middle single coil with my strats neck pickup for a thick middle position sound

Will I lose a lot thick neck position sound from pickup if it's in the middle?
>>

>Shawn as the OP image
You're alright.
>>
>>72703732
I have no experience with this and am no pickup expert, but the neck position on a strat is considerably further away from the bridge than the middle position on an RG. In fact, the middle position on your RG will be closer to the bridge than the middle position on your strat.

Again, I'm no expert, but I think you'll lose a lot of tone.

Hi guys, first time posting in one of these threads

I recently started learning guitar and I'm about to buy an electric one. I completely fell in love with the Jazzmaster and Jaguar design so i really wanna buy one of these two.

I have a budget up to 250$, I'm hesitating between the Squier Jazzmaster Affinity HH which has just been released (pic related) and a second hand (almost new apparently) Squier Jaguar Vintage Modified for 260$

The fact is that I heard these guitars are pretty oriented noise rock, shoegaze and stuff, but I'm more into soft rock, jazzy tunes, indie rock and stuff (even if I appreciate good distortions)

So the most logical would be to buy a polyvalent guitar like a strat, but I like the design of these two way more

So I wanted to know which one would be the best to start learning guitar on an electric one and which one is the most polyvalent even if they're distinctive models

thanks
>>
>>72704181
Most modern jazz is too patrician for the average rockist guitar player. You show them modern music and they complain that it doesn't sound like music from the 1960s. Julian Lage, Jonathan Kreisberg, Kurt Rosenwinkel are modern but still conservative, you might like them.

New to guitars. My brand new Yamaha Pacifica 112V has this thing where the tone pot is much easier to turn than the volume pot. Does the fact that the tone pot is a coil splitting type explain this, or could there be something wrong with the guitar?

I removed the knob with the provided key and checked the shaft of the pot: the nut is well tightened, so the lack of resistance has to do with the pot itself. There's also a degree of play where the shaft can be freely be rotated back and forth a few degrees.

I googled it and saw a couple of other mentions of the tone knob specifically for this model. What gives?

Pic related: it's this type of tone pot

The chord progression sounds like G B C

To follow the chord progression do I just play a scale in the current chord(key?)?
ex. playing notes from pic when the C chord is being played
>>
>>72705847
Really? Why?

I just get a bit apprehensive since the volume pot has a super pleasant resistance but the tone pot doesn't (still offers even resistance when turned, though). Is it just a design thing?
>>
>>72706004
pots can have different resistances depending on a few design elements, Yamaha probably didn't go out of their way to match the feel of each pot since it doesn't affect performance too much. Anyways, when you open up a pot you can see it's a pretty foolproof design. Your pot is definitely not broken.
>>
>>72706004
Should be fine so long as the pot doesnt continue to turn or jiggle around when you hit the max/min of the turn.

it just fits over it, just play it and you'll hear it.

the backing chords are Gmaj Bbmaj Cmaj, I'm not really sure why a G min scale fits over a progression where the I chord isn't a minor though. a lot of songs do this kind of stuff though, blues music does it all the time.

if you try playing something like a G maj pentatonic over it, it just... doesn't work or sound right.

More and more often I'm having producers play me a melody on a keyboard and telling me to make it sound like a guitar, or just telling me to play something fast or something emotional or whatever. I only see sheet music in sessions that are going to radio or soundtracks, an even then they'll say they want it sterile or they want it to sound human, or they want you to play around with it accentuating determined notes around chord changes or melodies or whatever. Basically, any possible situation you need to adapt to it. I got paid to $500 to do a dimebag darrel with an articificial harnonic. They wanted a sample that resolved in key without having to pitch shift it. I played no more than 90 seconds. I used the studio's equipment. I could have been in and out in 15 minutes, but i stuck around the rest of the session to network and see what they were cooking up.

Amp and vocals will be alright

You could mic a bass cab with one, but it wouldn't sound as good as going direct into the interface and using an amp sim. Good bass tone is a lot easier to simulate than guitar

I wouldn't recommend one mic for drums. But check out this video for ideas:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPPhmyBIi6k
It's hard as fuck to record drums naturally and get a good sound from them which is why so many people program drums instead. Consider that for demo stuff

Know people. Only way, the market for guitarists is saturated. You either need to br top tier where they come to you, or you have to be close and be a sure deal. With me they exoected results, no bullshit, and some good jokes. I stopped doing it though, better consistent money at a 9 to 5 than session work. You'd have to get on doing live shows with a superstar to see anything close to real money. Musicians are expendable

>It's hard as fuck to record drums naturally and get a good sound from them which is why so many people program drums instead. Consider that for demo stuff

are there really scenarios where programmed drums would sound better than live drums? it just sounds so strange. i know i can play drums better than i could ever program them. just feel and accents and the sound of a live kit even if it was recorded shitty i think would sound better. what do you think programmed drums would have on shittily recorded live ones?

Yeah, they do tend to have cleaner cleans than most tube amplifiers.
What I do with mine, is that I use the built-in distortion at fairly low gain and put an overdrive pedal in front of it. I didn't expect much, but well, it actually sounds pretty good.

can pedals actually sound good? like, big? big distortion sound. my experience with pedals they always sounded small and with a narrow spectrum
>>
>>72710832
Digital does amp modeling, which tries to sound like all the popular amps, clean and distorted. Other SS amp like the Randall I posted is about high wattage, its own high gain circuit, and pushing out a lot of bass/low end. It'll come down to the wattage of your cab, and if you want tone option from the amp or pedals.
>>
>>72710805
>what do you think programmed drums would have on shittily recorded live ones
sound quality, clarity, and stereo depth. You can get them pretty natural sounding if you're good at arranging them and have good samples. Of course a lot of it depends on the genre and vibe you're going for
