daily /thread/
The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

>Djwwww & Mc Play-station - *'~ 僕らのFANTASY *゚+.。:;+.:;。+゚* vs heat wave - I'm fuckin you tonight
my absolute favorite matchup based solely on titles is a totally weird one. Im Fuckin You Tonight is sort of an eccojams copycat that does its job less effectively and with less looping. maybe its more like screw in that respect. either way, nothing standout about it. *'~ 僕らのFANTASY *゚+.。:;+.:;。+゚* is some next-level shit though. the playstation 2 sound opening, the fucking voiceover samples and the video game music, it sort of expressed to me what i think the point of this type of music is: distortion and reappropriation of genuine culture into other culture, a giant collage of niche existences. really good.

yelle - pop up
>>72356113
GFOTY's parts of PC Music Vol I and II were my least favorite parts, because they really take the idea behind PC Music further into "uncomfortable" than the other artists, I think. GFOTY really is "ironic" music-- in being knowingly drivel, having tons of unappealing attributes, all while maintaining its Pop aesthetic (and attracting people that actually like the music without knowledge of the label it came from!).
but cool ill start with VDAYMIX
>>72356323
>GFOTY really is "ironic" music
nooooooooo
gfoty is not a character as much as it is a state of mind to polly.
gfoty is a spiteful being who will not accept anything not currently in its mentality. crushes from its youth are casually obsessed over, boiled down into a disgusting corruption of the only music it knows.
gfoty is a critical body, but it is all manifested from a place that rests inside the main being.
in other words, it's not ironic, but it is bloated and warped to hell.
>>72356512

Karlheinz Stockhausen / Aloys Kontarsky / Harald Bojé / Rolf Gehlhaar / Johannes G. Fritsch performing Karlheinz Stockhausen (1970)
>electroacoustic, stochastic music
An altered version of a previous Stockhausen piece in honor of Beethoven's 200th birthday, in which various tape collages are interspersed with distant radio performances of Beethoven pieces, it's really damn cool. Stockhausen's collages aren't his greatest work, but they're still done wonderfully and they probably make up his weirdest work, and that's saying something. The small Beethoven interjections make the piece. I'm not sure how if I'd like it as much, but with these samples it's a bizarre, distant piece that's pretty damn wonderful.

Just got back from Acid Mother's Temple. Shit was otherworldly.
As a special bonus one of the openers was a band made of half the members of Candy Claws and they played a bunch of songs from Ceres and Calypso. I was not expecting it at all, so it was even cooler than it already was.
The Juju - Exchange (2017)
>jazz fusion
Smooth as silk jazz fusion with a lot of funk/hip hop influence. Nico Segal's trumpet playing takes the spotlight, and he's damn good, he injects a lot of power into the sound that the other instrumentalists really don't bring. The songs are alright, a lot simpler than I'd like my fusion to be and still a bit too much like Segal's work with the Social Experiment for my tastes (i.e., too damn much poppy funk), but the pure fusion stuff here is great, it's a smooth take on the genre that I've never really heard before and it's done well.
2.5+
Show Me the Body - CORPUS I (2017)
>industrial hip hop, noise rock
More or less the same beat repeated over and over again with increasingly bored-sounding vocalists. The basic beat is alright, but they try and slam waaaaay too many ideas into one mixtape, and fucking NOTHING works together. The simpler tracks end up being the best, "In a Grave" bangs, because the beat is nice and Denzel Curry is awesome, but pretty much every other vocalist besides Curry is just trash. Mal Devisa is alright, but I wish she showed up more, and despite her and Curry's turns the sheer presence of someone like Babyglock, the real-life version of the "Just 2 Guyz" skit the Lonely Island does, negates any positive qualities this mixtape can have. Ignore how alluring the genres may be, this is pretty damn bad.

ALRIGHT LETS START
Diana Ross - Diana (1980)
>disco
Yeah, this sure is a halfway decent disco album released after disco hit it's prime with no elements that I like about disco. I didn't really expect much more, but this is a pretty damn bland album. It's strengths lie in Ross' natural charisma as a vocalist (seriously, she's phenomenal) and the joyous "I'm Coming Out", but the rest is pretty bland. Not bad, just really, really bland. I love disco and this is pretty middling even to me.

New Gorillaz is a DamonAlbarnSideProject/10
lots of interesting collab choices but nothing pops out
and Albarn hides his voice behind the Feel Good Inc. filter at all times, which is really stupid
also the rip that's going around has some really irritating amp buzzing in the background, very obvious on some tracks like Andromeda and Sex Murder Party

Taking a break from math homework to write some short, shitty reviews.
>Ricardo Villalobos - Alcachofa
Y'all shleepin' on this I swear. People rave about Easy Lee, but that's not even the best track on here. That'd have to go to Dexter for sure. The only track I really didn't care for was the closer, Fools Garden. This extremely skeletal version of Microhouse appeals to me so much more than the highly produced, kind of bloated versions like Immunity. For sure not gonna be everyone's thing, but I loved it.
8
>Kevin Drumm - Sheer Hellish Miasma
Astounding. Hands down one of the best pure-noise albums that exists out there. I was sort of turned of by the opening track, which seems really unfitting from the rest of the album in retrospect. One of the best-executed noise albums ever, and I enjoyed it much more than Imperial Distortion (jump-scare, the album).
8
>Sun Ra and His Hoes - Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy
It's fuckin' Sun Ra, bitch. The playing/note choice/form is all here, but I can't help but feel a lot of this is much more skeletal than from what I've enjoyed in his catalog. "Moon Dance" is easily one of the dude's best tracks, and yet "Voice of Space" is just...boring. Really adventurous, but not exactly what I'm looking for in this kind of music.
7
>Metá Metá - MM3
Yeah okay I fucks with it. Legit and unique idk what else to say about it. Pulls off so many styles so well, I guess I just thought a few tracks were a little iffy.
Worst review ever holy shit.

>Jeff Mangum - Live at Jittery Joe's
SHUT THAT FUCKING BABY UP.
Not surprised that I liked this a lot. The recording is shotty, sure, but I think it suits NMH's songs really well. If it were just Jeff talking about stuff that might be interesting, but there's far too much crowd banter and CRYING BABIES (the worst sound ever. If someone made an album of crying baby sounds I would rate that shit to a 0 faster than the speed of light). His cover of "I Love How You Love Me" is incredible. In fact, the entire album is super consistent in quality. Anyone who says they don't like NMH is lying idc.
7
>Cyrus - Inversion
The A-side kicks so much ass but you know this. The B-side would be okay if it were like a fifth of the length, otherwise it's pretty bad.
6
>チャラン・ポ・ランタンと愉快なカンカンバルカン - ただ、それだけ。
The hell? This is really energetic, catchy carabet/polka from japan. It has a lot of incredible track on it, but I really feel like the energy gets tiring and old after a bit.
6
>ဦးဘသန်း - Basic Method in Music Volume 1
Was really looking forward to liking this, but really it just didn't appeal to me that much. Everything was kind of dull and too long. Oh well.
5
>Talk Talk - London 1986
Worse renditions of songs I'm not even huge on in the first place. They should've done songs from when they actually made good music. That'd be cool.
5
>Tiger Trap - s/t
Nah. I thought this was going to convert me to twee or something but it hasn't happened yet dawg. It's "noisey" sure, but I feel like this is just a consequence of production and not really planned that way. Nothing really special imo.

Hank Mobley - No Room For Squares
>Hard Bop
Everything about this album is so tight. The lineup is killer - with both Morgan and Byrd on the trumpet, Mobley on sax, Herbie Hancock/Andrew Hill switching off on piano and Philly Joe Jones laying it down on drums. And look at that damn cover. Blue Note and CTI had the coolest aesthetics man. Anyway, pretty much everyone on here rips it up, with some killer solos all over the place. There’s a nice mix between ridiculous shows of speed, bluesier cuts and some with a nice middle ground. It’s exactly what you’d expect out of the whole hard bop movement basically. “Me N You” (Morgan just kills it jesus) and the title track are both so damn good and overall it’s a really consistent listen. Still haven’t found an album from this guy that I don’t like.

Chino Amobi - Airport Music For Black Folk
I'm assuming there is some political message present in this release? All messages aside, this album is an interesting but in my opinion one that found a way to take a rest in between the rating of "ok" and "good". Would it be better if I understood whatever message this is trying to deliver? Probably. Based on this first listen though, I will just be giving some basic thoughts on how I feel about the EP.
It definitely sets a vibe and atmosphere with its cold and metallic production. At the same time it is in a way eerie, not because of some creepy creature or stalker in the house but because of feeling of bleakness that lasts throughout the EP. These feelings are all caused by abrasive sounds of a post-industrial machine.
As interesting as they are though, the word "repetitive" comes to mind as the music goes on. Sure, this may be the cause of some message or symbolism in it all but it isn't as well done as it really could be. Thankfully the EP is short enough for the songs to not be too boring but if I had a slightly shorter attention span I'd probably be lying down with my face on the keyboard and gibberish on the screen.
Surely, the EP spits some solid ideas from its mechanical monster mouth. They're worth a listen and do give an experience. Unfortunately, it wasn't an incredible experience and leans more towards average for me in terms of quality.
Amobi is coming out with a new release this year though. This release was definitely interesting enough for me to think that the new one has potential. I do hope however that it is better than this one.

Trans God: Zazen Boys - No Time
This sounds like a more punk Japanese version of the Contortions. Really neat desu.
Torts: Ella Jenkins - Wake Up, Little Sparrow
Alright song. It's nothing I find too special but it at least has some level of folky kinda emotions and sets a fine atmosphere.
¿: Colin Stetson - A Dream of Water
Interesting tune. Continuous background meme sax + spoken word = fun.
stick: Melvins - Bar X the Rocking M
Heyo, you were sorta right. Though I don't know if I full on hate this, I definitely do not like it. It seems to me like the Melvins were trying to experiment too much on this song and the experiments did not sit well with me.
ricebeansandegg: Batfinks - All the Same
Decent tune. It's got some interesting elements but doesn't really have anything that I can say I like that much about it. It really just does lie at a neutral for me.
jimmy jazz: Crystal Waters - Gypsy Woman
Good ol' old school house. Of course, it's a bit cheesy but if anything it becomes more fun that way. I can't believe I haven't heard this before. Really fun.
oneothe: Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Shitsville
Decent tune. Decent beat. Decent rapping. Like Batfinks, it really just leaves me neutral. However, this is a step above it because of the skit at the end.
Kanzler: Tiny Hazard - Sharkwhirl
Pretty fun tune desu. I genuinely think it's too short though. More fun could be had but alas it is only 1:39.
yamir: Buscabulla - Caer
Pretty groovin' tune. Nice and pleasant. Neato stuff.
trip up: Kim Doo Soo - Mountain
Okay song. Neat guitar playing but the melody is one that I only find okay. Yeah, it's ok.

Svitlana Nianio - Episode III From Original Performed Soundtrack "Transilvania Smile"
OOIOO - Feather Float
Very Boredomy, which I like, always felt that that particular band didn't really capitalise on the Fookin MASSIVE sound Super AE and Vision Creation Newsun had, I don't think that I could take drugs to it though, the mix is a little to flat and thin if you catch the shite I'm flinging
Jorge Ben - Forca Bruta
OK Fishe shuddapaya face I've listened to it now
was quite comfortable, good for sunday drives South to the coast
Pond - Hobo Rocket
Saw these guys live before King Gizz at their festival, they weren't anything mindblowing but as soon as they hit the stage all of the weed smokes came out, they had decent stage presence... I get the hype they have around Perth, but it's essentially a mix of Tame Impala and Led Zeppelin (nobody fucking call me out because they so totally sound like Thee O Sees, take off ye fuckin hipster)
Minimal Man - The Shroud Of
wanted this to be amazing but it wasn't not sold on minimal wave to be honest with you
Jim O'Rourke - Simple Songs
Not as good as his releases around the turn of the century, this kind of sounds like dad jazz
Ryo Fukui - Scenery
Decent piano driven jazz, didn't shatter my earth forever, kind of reminded me of the Deadly Premonition Soundtrack

>I ate too much and now I'm sad for some reason.
this happens to me a lot
#FEST (a college music festival) was awesome. Lil Yachty played the songs I liked of his (even played Dipset, one of my favorite songs by him that isn't that popular). I don't like Migos but they were incredibly fun and literally the entire crowd was a giant moshpit. Young Thug was alright, so was 21 Savage. One of the highlights though were the DJ's inbetween the artists that just played random popular songs (Kanye - pt. 1, Monster, Swang, Jumpman, lots of Kendrick including stuff from GKMC, etc.).
Also lots and lots of weed
>>72365735

>World's End Girlfriend - Seven Idiots
>Experimental Rock, Glitch, Noise, IDM
Age of Adz came to mind when I began to listen to this. But there is no voice amongst the cello and guitar, the drum machine that passes by, and the distorted electric guitar. There's a lot more stylistic jumps than Velocity:Design:Comfort. And yet it moves.
Some tracks like Teen Age Ziggy lean more towards rock, and are honestly fun to listen to. Others feel like collagist experiments, like Der Spiegel Im Spiegel Im Spiegel or The Offering Inferno. Some feel like hybrids of the previous, like Helter Skelter Cha-Cha-Cha and Decalogue Minus 8. Many of the tracks have the same arrangment of Japanese electronic music (using the most general terms here because of my naivete, sorry), characterized by the D&B beats and joyous chiptune/guitar melodies that you expect from anime intros, Galaxy Kid 666 being a prominent example.
But these tracks don't like to stick to one sound for the listener, jumping between two moods or more. It's the kind of music that asks for lyrics, but is servicable without them.
Bohemian Purgatory parts 1 through 3 drop the pace of the previous tracks to fully spaz out more than Cosmogramma, while letting the emotion of ealier M83 to flow out after its rougher parts. A very good streak to listen through, followed by the album's more experimental side.
After the screams of children and a noise climax, we're gently put back down with a lullaby.
A surprisingly solid non-meme album.
7/10
>Frankie Knuckles - Live at Ministry of Sound, 1991
>Chicago House
If you don't typically like electronic music, I think you'll like this. This really isn't something I would normally sit down and listen to, and it really isn't meant for that. This is meant to be taken, like blapp said, on a car ride, or played outside.
Even then, I don't know if the corniness, low fidelity, and timeworn samples of this mix wouldn't irritate me even then.
6/10

update time, once again
>the white noise - electric storm vs the for carnation
i respect what white noise tried to do here, it just didn't appeal to me personally; almost none of the melodies grabbed me, and the various sound experiments weren't really compelling.
the for carnation made some solid, buildy slowcore. mcmahan's vocal delivery doesn't quite work as well here compared to spiderland (probably due to the prettier instrumentation and arrangements). some moments of real beauty.

Gauging interest for this...
Anyone down for a /daily/ covers project? Anyone who wants to contribute covers a song and I'll compile them all. Now, I'm thinking to make it more interesting it should be drawing style to determine what song you'll cover. Also means the song should be pulled from a list of standards, if you will, so you don't get paired up with some obscure BS avant song you can't personalize. So I'll need...
1. A list of people interested.
2. Some good standard suggestions to cover. (Is there some platform where we can all add stuff to the list?) then we'll vote on what to keep or ditch from the list.
I'll fuck off if no one's interested, too.

AOTYSF. Jim's "happy experimental" style shines through on the first track more than anywhere else, and the second song boasts a really strong drone/noise track that really gets me goin'. The last song I found pretty lacking, but pleasant nonetheless. Y'all don't sleep on this okay?
