The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

reposting for those whomst haven't reccd yet(nat, s, Blapp, Accel, FISH, trans, Woolite, terminus)

THEN recommend me an album 90 minutes or less that is tagged on rateyourmusic.com with at least one genre that starts with the same letter you chose! if you feel the need, post the letter along with the rec when you rec. i'll be verifying each individually.

The Allman Brothers Band - The Allman Brothers Band (1969)
>southern rock, blues rock
The Allman's are much better when they're in jam mode than when they're in song mode. The one two punch of "Don't Want You No More" and "It's Not My Cross to Bear" makes for an incredibly effective display of bluesy guitar heroics, and the closer "Whipping Post" boasts a catchy as sin chorus and an incredibly gritty vocal performance from Gregory Allman. The rest is decent but uninspired blues rock. They do blues somewhat tastefully, like Skynyrd, but their ballads fall-flat and the shorter blues tracks just lack any real memorable characteristics. They'd improve with Eat a Peach.

Cerberus Shoal - The Land We All Believe In (2005)
>avant-folk, progressive folk
A very weird album, but one that feels like it's forcing itself to be weird rather than letting it come naturally. It's a stark contrast to the bands earlier Talk Talk-esque post-rock, and the liveliness of the music is a very welcome change. There are many issues with this album, but it's a fun, colorful listen that always has you guessing what tricks are going to be thrown at the listener next, and I really appreciate that. With this, however, comes a lack of cohesion and a general lack of structure that the band doesn't pull off terribly well. They still seem stuck in the post-rock mindset, focusing a lot on crescendoes and releases, but the business of the music does not lend itself well to this style, making most every song feel awkward and stilted, especially the poppier tracks. It's ambitious as hell, and decently enjoyable, but it's incredibly messy and somewhat grating, despite the potential.
2.5-
Ruins - Hyderomastgroningem (1995)
>zeuhl, experimental rock, brutal prog
It's Tzadik prog, no more, no less. Yoshida and Masuda's performances are both fucking incredible, and they anchor the whole album. Yoshida knows how to balance brashness and subtlety incredibly well, and Masuda can make his bass sound like nearly anything, his performance is killer. Compositionally it's rather weak, it repeats itself a lot and very rarely does it present the listener with any interesting, new ideas, which is something so commonplace with zeuhl. Still, it's a good listen.

New Chart Because I Lost Steam On The Old One Chart (Everything Gets A 3.5 Edition)
>Hiatus Kaiyote- Tawk Tomahawk
This was something my friend recommended. I thought it was a really decent listen, although kind of a mixed bag. The beginning of the album is a lot different from the end of the album. Even though its jumbled, the quality of the music is solid. I liked the Q-Tip cameo on the last song, as well.
3.5/5.0
>Beastie Boys- Paul's Boutique
Another friend recommendation. I had initially written off The Beastie Boys as "rap for people who hate rap" but this album proved me wrong. The album was highly enjoyable because of the energetic delivery of the group and the creative production.
3.5/5.0
>Kate Bush- Hounds of Love
Running Up That Hill has been on my "moody 80s tracks" for a while, but until now, I hadn't heard the full album. My biggest reason for liking it was the variation in the whole thing, from the radio-friendly pop hits on side A to the compelling concept suite on side B. Although it has a few forgettable songs, I'm drawn to this album's overall aesthetic and Kate Bush's voice (and looks).
3.5/5.0
Just kidding-- Tawk Tomahawk is a 3.0.

I drank a whole bottle of wine but I'm just barely drunk. Maybe I'm building up a tolerance? I kinda hope not. Just finished Haruhi + the movie so here's a little mini review:
The show is alright, albeit super flawed, awfully paced, and too consistently changing from a really average slice-of-life with a subtly interesting story underneath, but mostly tone-wise stays in the latter.
However, I think the movie really draws the whole series together in a smart, interesting, and satisfying way that I totally didn't expect from a show that so often disappointed. The movie can't be seen without the series, but I would also insist that the vise-versa is true, and I would almost compare it to Eva in that sense, but not exactly close to that level of quality really. If you're willing to trudge through 28 episodes in varying levels of quality (including eight episodes that are EXACTLY the same) to end it all on a very high note, then I'd highly rec this if you're into anime or other gay shit.
And the movie confirms what we all knew in the first place: That Yuki a best.

Arca - Arca (2017)
>art pop, glitch pop
I adore Arca's vocals, like a lot of people seem to. They add a dimension to Arca's music that did not exist before—a human dimension. I still can't get into Arca's production, though. He produces incredibly well for other artists, but the production in his solo stuff seems somewhat vapid and very empty, and this is probably his emptiest sounding record yet. The emptiness does work well with the downtrodden, emotional vocals, but it's simply not very interesting to listen to, especially in comparison to his normal, off-the-wall work. It's probably my favorite of his solo work yet, but I'm still not too big on it.
2.0+
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique (1989)
>east coast hip hop
This old-school style of hip hop still isn't fully my thing, and both Ad Rock and Mike D really do have fucking irritating voices (MCA is great, though), but the production on this thing is insane, and the style of rapping is really damn entertaining. The voices might be irritating, but all three Beasties are always perfectly in sync, finishing each others verses and rapping together without a hitch in the flow of the songs and the album. This is by far their most strictly hip hop album, with no rock to be found except arguably on "Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun" (which fucking BANGS), and the beats are insane. Every single track is packed to the brim with samples (seriously, this is Endtroducing / Since I Left You level), but the simplicity of the beats still stands out no matter how fully featured they may actually be. The samples are taken from the most obvious, famous sources but they still work perfectly, they sample the fucking Beatles on "The Sounds of Science" and it's not even noticeable, it's amazing. Rappers with better voices might have been nice, and old-school hip hop might never really be my thing, but this is a great damn album.

Keith Rowe - A Dimension of Perfectly Ordinary Reality (1990)
>free improvisation, indeterminacy
Some interesting sound work from one of the masters of that kind of stuff. I'd be lying if I said a lot of this didn't go right over my head, especially the almost completely silent closing track, but the way Rowe is able to manipulate his guitar the way he does is amazing, and I love the samples strewn out and about, it's very odd to hear T-Rex just show up in the middle of a guitar improv piece. The opener is the only piece I really "get", per se, but this is interesting, even if it's not my forte, at all.

>diSEMBOWELMENT - Dusk
Not a huge fan, but it wasn't bad. I feel like death/ funeral doom just aren't for me, the production always feels sloppy and I don't really get any sort of emotion from it. The last track was the best.
3/5
>Artificial Brain - Infrared Horizon
I loved Artificial Brain's debut, so I was excited to see how their sophomore album would be. They killed it once again, awesome sounding stuff. However, I rated their first album a 4.5/5, even though most people right now seem to like this more. Maybe I need to relisten to their first album. Regardless, good shit from them.
4/5
>Various Artists - Mono No Aware
Amazing. The genres tagged on here (ambient, sound collage, drone, musique concrete) excited me a lot, especially for a 2017 release, even though they tend to be hit or miss. But fuck, this was just really good. I loved all the musique concrete stuff, the whole thing felt very nature-y and mysterious. Definitely one of the best ambient albums I've heard in a while, and my 2017 AOTY as of now. Listen to this for sure.

Autechre - LP5
>Techno, IDM(eme)
This is my first Autechre album. I attempted to listen to elseq some years ago, and lost interest. I tried to listen to elseq, and got bored. I'm glad I got to force myself to sit down and give this a listen, because it's not bad at all. Polyrhythms and irregular time measures, it's just what I'd want from a group like Autechre
Acroyear2 is a tightly layered circuit of rhythm, with a small list of sounds to focus on during the meek looping melody, before it all furls away. 777 forgoes a melody to become a clockwork mechanism. Rae reminds me of a car ride-- light drifting thoughts, but in actuality you're sitting in a metal beast-- and even then, the track's car ride ends and shifts to lonely walking. Autechre's ability to meld together the raw and cold sounds with artificial emotion is exceptional.
Following the slightly unnerving tinkles of Melve, Vose In drips of acid house influence before completely corroding at the end. Fold4, Wrap5 is an interesting detour, slowing down and speeding up as if a drum machine could be in a state of adolescence.
On Under BOAC, the drum takes on a hollow quality and overpowers the track for once. The sampling makes this track stand out from the album as a whole, and is definitely one of the better tracks. Corc reminds me of "Orban Eq Trx4" from Aphex Twin - drukqs.
AND then we have Drane2. It's actually lighter than most of the album, and an interesting choice for a closer, drifting out like a raft out on an ocean. (Not counting the hidden closer which seemed to be more of a cliffhanger in an epilogue than a P.S.)
So that's how I felt going through the album. Does it execute the creation of a Techno/IDM album well? For the most part.
Does it stay consistent with its content? For the most part.
Is it memorable? Not particularly.
>>72340361
I think there's more to Autechre that isn't present in this album. The original reason I was turned off from them (when I used to be really into Aphex Twin) was that while James was all about plugging the machine into his mind, and putting whatever creatures or beings lingering in there out for everyone to see, Autechre are known for hiding any human touches in their work.
Yet, this album clearly has the marks of people on it. It's a weird mix for them, and not what I expected from this album. Perhaps it's because Autechre are still willing to express a little more than patterns here, that it loses sight of what Autechre willingly represent in their autonomy. But perhaps it's a good place to branch paths within their discography.

Max Cobarcho - Ars Lucis
>Ambient
Rating an ambient album is always something difficult to do.
On one hand, comparing it to full albums with more ideas and work put into them just feels demeaning. An ambient album sets very simple and achievable goals:
1) Build an easily accessible atmosphere
2) Have pleasing sounds
3) [OPTIONAL] Progress its music just enough to not be Drone
This is what shows an ambient album is good at what it does. There are things to look for during attentive listening, and a bed to fall back on with passive listening.
What I enjoy the most, however, is when an album seeks to gain attention and lose it at the same time: suspended in that area where there's not quite much happening, but just enough to keep you from letting your mind process it as background noise. I think any ambient album that tries to take another step into that dangerous gray area in electronic music should be given attention accordingly.
I bring this up, because I really want to justify my rating of this, being higher than an intricate, cared for Autechre album.
I like that the first track sets a motif for the rest of the album to interpret. I like the deliberate movement from the Narthex, and the tumbling synths introduced in Pillar Ascension. The (real!) choir of Transpet Spire Glass escorts (not indicates) the introduction of Choir Ecstasy, and the tinge of hesitance it holds. And I think the the last track is the deepest one yet.
I like the many layers of harmony-- another thing about ambient albums to listen for. The presentation of one note or chord alone is not nearly enough; I can hear maybe 5 or more at once at any point during some tracks.
I confess that this album lies on right outside of the aforementioned grey area, but only just. But if we return to the definition of what I think consists of a good album, I think the rating makes sense.

>transcuck vs jimmy jazz
>xxxtentacion - free x
Repetitive, generic, lazy, stupid, etc. Gave up after about 6-7 tracks, honestly might've given it a 0.5 had I decided to sit through the entire thing. I like raw, distorted hiphop, but you gotta have actual talent to pull it off. xxxtentacion is bland as a rapper, his only defining feature is that he sounds like a white kid with anger issues sometimes, good fucking job. The production is just Trap Rap 101 with added distortion, which means that simpletons who watch MLG Youtube vids will obviously lap this shit up. I'll pass. 1.0
>Girl Band - France 98
It's tight, it's catchy, it's noisy. The vocals are a bit shaky and generally feel more like they belong to a tamer indie rock band, but overall this is a solid slice straightforward noise rock. 3.5
jimmy jazz wins, transcuck is banned from participating in my future tournaments and from reccing music to me in general. Jim, give us a nice meme pic and a nice meme album
>>72343590
eh I honestly hated that track but whatevs. If by "real" they mean that he puts violence and misogyny into practice instead of just rapping about that shit then well, whoop dee doo, he's "real."

>batsumi - batsumi vs juffage - semicircle
two distinctly happy records that go about expressing it in different ways; batsumi through contented bliss and semicircle via triumphant beauty. semicircle has uplifting melodies and chord progressions all funneled through total wall-of-sound production - the instrumentation is varied and the textures vary from sparse and precious to noisy and rich. batsumi is a simple joy to listen to; it's heartwarming, charming, and fun.
I'm gonna need an ep rec from both nat and s to break the tie. no restrictions
>Eddie Fisher - Eddie Fisher and the Next One Hundred Years
Pretty solid instrumental funk. Nothing wrong with it, I just didn't find very much that was memorable about it. The 12 minute track was nice though.
2.5
>Universal Togetherness Band - s/t

>The Beatles – Rubber Soul
Oh look, Dogwander is writing about his personal experiences with The Beatles albums while revisiting them because apparently fishboi reads these. Also cause this Chelsea – Tottenham needs more goals.
I’d say this is where the bugs got more serious about their songwriting. They definitely started to play around with drugs too.
As a kid I used to like this one a lot. Specifically everyone’s least favorite song: Run For Your Life. Dunno why, always spoke to me personally. Lennon’s character of a guy talking shit to a girl probably spoke to the loser in me back then (says the trip posting reviews on an anonymous Monegasque yachting forum). There was something empowering about it I guess.
I think it is obvious that Norwegian Wood is one of the 2 track of the album that truly pack a punch. Sprinkled with all of its Shankar influence, which is just basically limited to the usage of sitar. It does however feature a very silly and vicious story though, so there are other attractions here.
Then there’s In My Life. A Lennon retrospective that gives me nostalgia over some life events that I never even had. Lots of power in a very simple track, it’s really great shit. The bizarre baroquesqe interlude on the track just makes it even better.
Michelle and Girl are the other 2 standouts for me simply because they are very pretty love songs. They always went side by side for me. Macca’s track is prettier (that bass bit for fucks sake), but Lennon’s track seems to be more emotionally honest.
The rest is mostly ok Some lyrics are memorable. “Love has a nasty habit of disappearing overnight” especially from I’m Looking Through You. I think the track in an acoustic arrangement without the annoying electric guitar would have been more enjoyable for me.
>>72346074
One thing I never noticed prior us that all but one track are under 3 minutes. That’s sort of cool, no? I think Harrison got better with songwriting but started to shine bright only by the time he hit the next album. Relistening to this made me remember the horrors of the stereo versions I constantly had throughout my entire life. I need to steal the Mono boxset from dad or just torrent that shit someday.
Sorry about the spacing. Forgot that happens when I paste things from a word document.

I don't know man, her first two albums do not appeal to me at all. I can't quite put a finger on it, but it probably has to do with the production. I think she benefits from strings and slightly more organic instrumentation.
Flipper - Gone Fishing
Album Generic this aint, I find that I have no taste for the meandering song structures, it's just a bit average
Guided by Voices - Propeller
Guided by Voices does a straightforward rock album, but it's a bit too dickhead for my tastes
Idles - Brutalism
Really rough dirty Punk from the UK, very political, the guy sounds like he's been gargling shards of glass when he sings, hits the spot that Titus Andronicus has left since The Monitor
Luxurious Bags - Frayed Knots
really washed out shoegaze, would comment further but nobody has heard it

>The bizarre baroquesqe interlude on the track just makes it even better.
I learned the other day that it's actually a sped-up piano instead of a harpsichord. Shows they had a lot of studio experimentation before stuff like Tomorrow Never knows.
Speaking of that, I listened to Revolver the other day and the only thing I really didn't like was Yellow Submarine. Gotta be my favorite Bortles album for sure.
