We love no thots on GOD

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time. This community is so inclusive that even communists and fascists coexist!

the first is The Way Ahead by Archie Shepp and the other is Consciousness by Windy & Carl. The latter was no doubt influenced by the former though, as they're extremely similar.

Funny you thought it was Shepp though, as Consciousness seems to be more popular:

Yarn - Yarn
>Ukranian Avant Folk

This album isn't actually inaccessible for avant-garde. The chord progressions and backing strings remain in place, and barely wander. The Ukranian singer's got a lot of reverb on her,

The recording is very iffy, but the unmistakable sounds of accordion introduces the album, with cello and some other instruments I can't quite recall. Perhaps a bukhalo or some other drum for percussion, a Bandura or Torban for that plucked sound, a bowed cello, and I can definitely hear a Tsymbaly. Unfortunately, no Trembita, which is one of the longest instruments in the world.

Because of these unique instruments, the album felt a lot like foreign Post Rock structured as Chamber Pop. Wait Till drones with minor chords, while Gorwedd Cerdded managed to a surreal pop rock song. Ty has the vocalist at her strongest, but the left and right mixing irked me. The closer was forgettable.

Not bad, not great. Can be hypnotic if you let your mind wander to it a bit, so I give it that. AND it's a bit rare, so I'm very glad to have this.

Brave Little Abacus - Masked Dancers: Concern In So Many Things You Forget Where You Are
>Midwest Emo, Math Rock

Emo is another genre I have very little experience in so I''m not going to write another pretentious review of this

But this was pretty good. A wee bit more stimulating than the other album.

I also like the singer's voice. I didn't like too much Punk/Emo because the singer always sounded like he needed a good deck in the face, but by exaggerating his voice so much it digs the singing out of that rut into "what is shame" land.

The production touch ups are pretty cool, the drums are top tier, and the guitars aren't intolerable.

"he never even existed in the first place" was stupid, I gotta say. And the other tracks with Akari samples skirt dangerously close to the same level of stupid. Why are they here i gotta ask

All Natural Level and Lime Flavors - Turning into Small
>dream pop, shoegaze

Actually it's not dream pop OR shoegaze, it's treading the middle ground right between them. The result is something that manages to do neither genre well.

The opener alone vocals somehow managed to sound less appealing than the last album's singer, probably because of how tentative they were. The word by word pronounciation also takes some time to grow on you. It improves as the album goes on, but not by much.

Puzzled Into Pieces and Lattershed actually take a psychedelic angle + electronics, which honestly works better for this band than on tracks like In Between and After. Emergency Turn Off and the closer also caught my ear after a few unmemorable tracks.

The RYM comments are laughable on this, btw. How, in any shape or form, is this like MBV when literally none of their songs are overwhelming in sound; I was turning up the volume on my player just to see if I was missing something, or if I downloaded a bad transcode.

Fiddling with an equalizer, this album sounds way better with slightly boosted mids and lows.
But I don't think it's fair to use an equalizer only on this album, and not any other album.

MEANT 5/10 FOR ALL NATURAL LEMON AND LIME WHOOPS

Andrew Poppy - The Beating of Wings
>Minimalism, Modern Classical, Electronic

OK so we got a Music for 18 Musicians choir
and an orchestra

hmmm mm mmmmm

So Poppy was a founding member of an ensemble dedicated to performing Reich and Glass all them Minimal giants, but allows himself to stretch out a bit more in his own work in terms of "repeating the same line of music over and over again." It's much more like R Plus Seven in that it takes a certain texture and progressively changes and nurtures its usage throughout The Object is a Hungry Wolf.

32 Frames for Amplified actually dumps the previous aesthetic I just typed out for something more like Philip Glass in 32 Frames for Amplified Orchestra. Not groundbreaking, but a decent track.

Listening In is where we begin to hear electronics, in a misshapen chamber pop format. I say chamber pop, because a British guy starts to whisper-speak and accompany the light looping dubstep wobbles of a synth and selected percussion. Then yo waddup got some horns to hit some drums with and minimalism is not a dead meme for sure

Cadenza for Piano and Electric Piano is unlike the previous compositions (once more), and is a delightful little duet between electronic and acoustic. The keyboard is gentler, and lets out joyful pings during the acoustic piano's bold arpeggios. And then the keyboard decides "perhaps i am not meant for this" and switches between a midi sax and piano on the bottom end on its keyboard, humorously and slightly to the piece's detriment, and it all decays to 2 traded notes, and then just 1 being fuckin thwacked

Not a great album, but a decent EP.

Got the courage to listen to Nothing and it went down to a 1. Awful. Also relistened to Heartlands and while I still hold my criticism that it is a more ham-fisted fusion of modern classical/baroque pop than I've heard before, I did enjoy it slightly more, so I moved it to a 6.

I have 17 reviews to write here so know these will probably end up being short and shitty:

>இளையராஜா - Solla Solla: Maestro Ilaiyaraaja and the Electronic Pop Sound of Kollywood 1977-1983
BOOM. BAP BAP. BOOMDABOPBOP. What the hell?? This was amazing! I must have some secret love for southern/south-east Asian music I'm just now discovering because I love this shit almost always without fail. Filled to the brim with winding, chaotic, funky, varied, unique Indian pop songs with some extremely satisfying vocal inflections. Fucking listen to this, nerd.
9

>Cocteau Twins - Garlands
Hottest take of the century is that this is CT's best album other than Heaven or Las Vegas, but it should come as no surprise in comparison to what I usually enjoy from post-punk. Cold and chaotic with strong rock tenancies. Garlands' biggest disadvantage is that Fraser is much reserved on this album. I'd LOVE to see her go fucking wild with her vocal inflections on these tracks, but she mostly stays in a more safe, subdued zone, which just leaves me barely satisfied.
8

>Fritz Reiner/Béla Bartók - Concerto for Orchestra
This was pretty fucking immaculate. I obviously am not as knowledgeable about classical as I'd care to be, and in a way I usually think this limits my enjoyment of classical albums. However, this I think is easy enjoyable regardless of music education. "Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta" was probably my least favorite section of this album, otherwise everything else was ace.
8

>The Misfits - Beware
"Attitude" has actually never been a Misfits track I've ever cared for, but everything else here is near-perfect. It's...uh...it's kinda good. I like it.

>Juggaknots - The Juggaknots
The production was a bit basic, but I can't help but enjoy this certain brand of boom bap. I really couldn't care less about lyrics, but the unconventional song structure and rap-interactions used on tracks like "Clear Blue Skies" make it a pretty easy winner.
7

>Mississippi John Hurt - Today!
Awesome in it's own right, but I can't help be disappointed knowing that he recorded much better music over three decades before this. Proof that blues can still be beautiful and uplifting while still maintaining a charming simplicity, but the absolute rawness present on the 1928 Sessions kick this one out of the water.
7

>The Drones - Feelin Kinda Free
Ditched their blues-y style for something a bit more noisey and chaotic. Imo much more successful, but still isn't quite complete-feeling. Much more pronounced and dynamic, but still nothing that amazing. "Boredom" was a clear favorite for me.
7

>Killing Joke - Night Time
Enjoyed this a bit more than their s/t, but I thought the first half was much too New Wave-y for me. I much preferred the more mechanical, somewhat predictable "Eighties" and "Multitudes". A dece post-punk album done in a style I typically don't care for.
6

>Gilberto Gil - s/t
Not as eventful, fun, or...good as his previous self-titled, but still an alright release. "Aquele abraço" is a great track, but for a genre I know so little about I still found this occasionally predictable.
6

>The Show Is the Rainbow - Gymnasia
A really energetic pop album that I really couldn't find myself getting into. I felt a lot of 90s hip-hop influences, especially on the few skits on here. Not sure what to think about this, other than I didn't really care for this and it's specific style of humor.

>Jon Hassell & Brian Eno - Fourth World Vol. 1: Possible Musics
Tribal ambient is a garbage genre most of the time, but this was alright. I could see how some may think this was less tedious than Eno's previous ambient albums, but the New Age production styles and instrumentation really just ruined any possible atmosphere that came out of a lot of simple, enjoyable ambient melodies that Eno is an expert of crafting.
5

>Tommy Wright III - Ashes 2 Ashes, Dust 2 Dust
It's no secret that a lot of these Memphis Tapes aren't always in the...greatest recording quality, but holy SHIT. Idk if it was just my rip but the recording quality here was abysmal. The hilarious, unique rapping combined with the fitting lo-fi beats almost helped sell this album, but it wasn't quite enough to get over how shitty the recording quality was. I downloaded THREE different versions of this hoping in vain I was wrong and that there was a version without a super fucked up EQ, but no such recording existed :(
5

>Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Déjà vu
Every fucking country rock album I review from this era is the same fucking review so here I go again: I don't usually like this genre and this was okay. I need to stop being such a shitty completionist and just ignore these. First two tracks and "Our House" were really all I cared for.
5

>Full of Hell & Merzbow - s/t
Noise + Grindcore is a collab that NEEDS to be done more, but I really don't think this was executed well. While I think a lot of the tracks at the end were DYING to be about twice the speed, the track I found myself hanging onto was "High Fells". Another big complaint is that Merzbow stays extremely subdued on disc one, and the latter disc is just really mediocre, overly long noise tracks. I much preferred the Full of Hell-headed disc, but I imagine this would be much more for someone that enjoys noise more than I.
5

3/4
>>
>>72299679

>The Innocence Mission - Birds of My Neighborhood
An album of well-written songs, sure, but this style of indie-folk feels a lot more tasteless to me than elsewhere. "The Lakes of Canada" is a pretty good song, and there's decent moments here, but nothing I'd chose to return to soon.
4

>Serge Gainsbourg - L'homme à tête de chou
While I don't hate this or anything, I just find Gainsbourg so BORING dude. Here is his worst offense of doing so. Perhaps if I spoke the language I'd enjoy this more, but to someone ignorant of the linguistics, this just sounds like someone talking over otherwise really dull, uninteresting compositions. Sorry to any Gainsbourg fans but I really couldn't care less for this. I enjoyed "Variations sur Marilou" decently and that was it.
3

>G. S. Sachdev - Bansuri: The Bamboo Flute of India
W E W Idk if I have shit taste or this is just a bad meme (we all know it's both). For real though, the timbre/playing-style of this was semi-enjoyable, but there is nothing here that justifies it being LP-length. If you really just like one-dimensional flute playing for 40 minutes be my guest but this certainly wasn't for me.
3

DONE.

>gr0ss vs Letov

>Betonkust & Palmbomen II - Center Parcs
Music like this oftentimes appears on these vaporwavey fake VHS nostalgia videos that you can find all over the internet these days. These guys certainly have that ~aesthetic~ down to a T, but their tunes are somewhat uneventful, relying on this hazy washed-out sound without really going anywhere. I liked it for a couple of tracks, but this type of music gets really old really fast. En nu opgekankerd. 2.0

>Кaзмa-Кaзмa - Пляcки тpyбaдypoв
Letov back at it again with the obscure lo-fi Soviet post-punk, except this time it has more of a zeuhl feeling, honestly. Very theatrical stuff, expressive vocals, instrumentation that finds a middle ground between rock band and brass band, carnival-esque motifs, the like. They even threw in a flute for good measure. I expected this to be way messier than it is though, it all comes together pretty well. It's also short enough that their gimmick doesn't wear off. I'll definitely be returning to this in the future, good stuff. 3.0+

Letov advances, gonna need a rec + an image of (almost) any kind to make the tournament prettier/uglier

Call Him A Doctor is an amazing lampoon of the 2000s pop scene. if pc music has been a turn off due to it not doing a good enough job criticizing the music it breeds in, give this a try. also give it a shot if you grew up in the plasticy hell hole that was 2005.
VIPOTY was an ok ep, but Poison is an amazing track.
Haircuts for Men is a lot better when you treat it as a dj mix of obscure downtempo tracks slowed down.
The First Original Silence is a fairly amazing barrage of noise rock terror. recommended if you want some brutal noise jazz that still feels like it has structure.
Solo is weirdly erotic if you're into that.
The russian album was fun as hell, if kinda one note.
The last album was some outsider house shit who cares.

>Sondre Lerche - Pleasure
Probably my favorite release from this guy, but definitely his most up-or-down for me. I loved a lot of the weirder production choices, and a lot of the freakier, less conventional moments like on "Violent Game". The opener, "Soft Feeling" was probably my favorite from this album. Despite having a lot to like, I just don't admire the lush, indie style all that much, which harshly detracts from my enjoyment of an otherwise well-written album.

>Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
Kate Bush's voice is really great. She has an incredible range of vocal talent, and she shows it on this album. And the compositions on this album are very solid, too. Great variety of instruments, sounds, synths and such. I don't have too much to say about this, other than that it was good!

>DJ Screw - Codeine Fiend
I liked this one a lot!! Very reminiscent of 3 n the Mornin and All Screwed Up. Another near 2 hours of classic Screw.

>Brainbombs - Burning Hell
There's so much to love about Brainbombs. Its so easy to get lost in the lazy, noisy riffs, while some Swedish dude screams gibberish into yr ear. It's a simple formula, but its so effective. I find it hilariously enjoyable. This was more lo-fi than Obey, and a little more raw, but still just as good.

Sonny Criss - Out of Nowhere
>Hard Bop

This is one hell of a fun bop recording. The set has a very precise and coordinated feel, and yet still has a loose, playful air about it. The musicianship from all four members is top notch, especially in relation to each other. They are perfectly complementary, even with Criss’ wild and precise phrasing attempting to steal the spotlight. The bass lines are a jumpin’ throughout, and the keyboard does a fantastic job guiding the melody and filling in the spaces. The solos don’t waste any time, and the set is so upbeat and groovy you’d think the record was 20 minutes long. Great set.
8.0 /10

Elder - Dead Roots Stirring (2011)
>stoner metal, stoner rock

Decent stoner metal with intriguing song structures that differentiates the album from other albums in the genre. The long, sprawling nature of every track on this thing is definitely a bit overwhelming, and it feels like most of them go nowhere until they explode into a solo. The tracks stay interesting with some nice riffing, but even the best riffing gets old if it stays around for ten minutes without doing much else. Vocally it's pretty garbage, but the vocals are pretty subtle and not overpowering, the guitars do most of the talking and that's definitely for the better.

Brötzmann / Kondo / Parker / Drake - Die Like a Dog: Fragments of Music, Life and Death of Albert Ayler (1994)
>free jazz

Remarkably tame given it's line-up, and it rarely goes above and beyond what's expected of a free jazz performance, but it's a damn good, incredibly easily digestible album. Every performer is wonderful, but Kondo's trumpet/electronics work steals the show. While everything else may make for a typical free jazz album, Kondo's performance brings a psychedelic aspect that gives the album a big boost, the damn thing doesn't even sound like a trumpet. Drake's drumming is great as well, he's got a fairly blunt approach that suits the music well. Worthwhile for any Brötzmann fan, or any fan of free jazz.

3.0+

John Zorn - The Big Gundown (1986)
>avant-garde jazz

I like Zorn, but this is just a fucking ugly album. These interpretations of classic pieces by Morricone are intriguing because they sound absolutely nothing like their original counterparts, but they're less loving tributes and more frank butcherings, honestly. I know Morricone has sung this record's praises, but I can't get into it at all. There are some fucking incredible musicians here, but Zorn's compositions (arrangements, I guess) aren't great at all.

Jeroen Diepenmaat - knip/plak EP03 (2017)
>turntable music

Pretty, haunting turntable music that's far too one-note and repetitive. Kinda Disintegration Loops-esque in how the loops slowly mutilate and change over time, but just like the Disintegration Loops it also seems a bit lazy in its approach. Like I've said, I don't care for loop-based music that much, and while this is very pretty and hazy, it's execution is just inherently not my thing. Still a solid EP.

Beck - Sea Change
>Folk Rock, Chamber Folk

A huge change of pace for Beck in the context of his career. Most of his early music from what I’ve heard, has an emphasis on alt/outsider rock and eccentric lyricism. It’s almost too quirky for its own good at times but the dude really knows how to balance a lot of disparate music styles. I mean, Odelay has a rocky sound meshed with electronic influence that hip-hop sampling sound only the producer that made Paul’s Boutique could pull off.

Sea Change feels much more grounded and serious than anything else I’ve heard by Beck, aside from maybe his last album. More than just a change in tone and songwriting, it’s also a change in texture. There’s strings, crashing piano, little synths - everything that makes a pop album feel chambery and baroque. Beyond all that, it feels melancholy and... lavish. The whole album has a semi-orchestral feel, which is obviously driven by occasional strings and piano throughout but it’s also the saddest Beck album I’ve heard. Songs like “Girl” and “Loser” are obviously sad in subject matter but they feel so bizarre and sarcastic that you can’t really take him too seriously. Ya know?

When I think of Odelay and Guero, the first word that pops into my head is “dusty”. Despite the great production, I feel like Beck made those albums in some barren warehouse in the desert as some dust was kicking up through the place. Maybe it’s because the songs all feel outsider-y and eccentric idk this isn’t contributing much to the review. But anyway, my point is - the textures on Sea Change are much cleaner and refined. It sounds more like Beck did the opposite and spent way too much time in the studio, honing this dreamy, contemplative mood. It’s weird to hear him less eccentric but he still manages to sound pretty good.

Anyway, this is kind of a bad review but in short - this is pretty enjoyable. Not on the same level as Odelay but good.

"The Anthill" is a pretty inoffensive pico/bitpop affair.

I want to highlight the track "Small Virtues", as it has a few elements that bring it above nearly all the other material here. It provides a nice contrast to the other material, as well.

While this full album has a consistent, cute charm to it, "Small Virtues" rises above. It plays with backbeats, bringing in a rhythic charm that is absent elsewhere. The vocals stay in a more natural register, compared to the grody falsetto that Eric attempts in other places. I feel, if the entire album were up to the quality of this one track, this album would have been more noteworthy.

In contrast, something like "Small Adventures" is just a mush of notes, where no strong rhythm can be discerned. This is also where that falsetto I mentioned comes in. Eric, learn to sing before you try to sing outside of your natural voice. This falsetto is the most dank discomfort to the maximum.

Unfortunately, I'd say most tracks lean nearer to the "Small Adventures" column than the "Small Virtues" one. They're generally nice, but mostly forgettable. This is passive music. It's something you can eat Lucky Charms and enjoy a mostly cloudy morning with hints of sunshine to.

Meh.

5/10

But it is a pleasant meh, at least.

P.S. experts say not to record the tracks that listeners skip. I skipped "Small Hopes" and "Small Rivers", for future reference.

I will post this review to RYM if you want, Señor Eric.

As a final note, in regards to the singing, listen go the pitch your voice is at when talking (Your speaking voice in your meme videos noted.). That is the pitch you should be singing near for the best tone. You are, in general, singing higher than sounds natural for you all over these recordings.
>>
>>72312110
Yeah post if it you want, it's your review. I'm miffed that you skipped Small Rivers though.

>Fishmans - King Master George

As opposed to Chappie Don't Cry's consistent mediocrity, this album presents some legitimately great songs. It just happens to be bogged down by some really, really godawful tunes. This album lacks any sort of cohesive style that made Chappie Don't Cry bearable. It's kind of hard to fault them for wanting to experiment outside of their special brand of slightly off-kilter dub, but they jump all over the place on this record, from neo-psych to rocksteady. And it is so easy to tell when they are out of their element. It's as if they're aping these genres ironically. Sometimes you don't even know what the fuck they were going for and the song just ends. Easily the worst song on the album is シーフードレストラン for this exact reason. They have some weird reverb effect on the vocals that sounds like Shinji belching. I don't even know how to describe it. Seriously, just listen to it and wonder who approved it. But like I said, it's a shame they padded the album with a bunch of shitty cuts because there are some catchy, well put together songs on here that make me want to sing along to a language I can't speak. Songs like the opener いい言葉ちょうだい, 影ドロボウ, and 土曜日の夜 are instantly recognizable as Fishmans because of their solid hooks and catchy dream pop and dub infused rhythms that have that sense of child-like wonder and innocence. Seriously, the opening track is incredible and wouldn't be out of place on Uchu Nippon Setagaya. It makes this album that much more frustrating because the songwriting skill is clearly there but not fully utilized. They need to stay far away from rock.

was p good, i liked the theme of small things and while being pretty resourceful with yr sounds you managed to keep it all together
i didn't like some of the singing, especially on the first song and the rapping lol, kinda reminded me of beck or something (tho the overlapping thing made it better). like, on small virtues it wasn't great but it worked, maybe cause you had a crutch melody in the backing or something.
liked feelings, dangers, virtues, endings.

>Fishmans - Neo Yankees' Holiday

It would seem that they really do improve with each album. On here there are a few more fantastic songs mixed with a bunch of passable ones, as opposed to okay I’m reaching for the skip button now songs. If anything this album continues the trend of strong openers. Shinji’s falsetto is so weird but effective and his voice really raises the quality and intrigue of the music beyond its relatively tame dub rhythms. Their early material, including this album, is still really lacking the emotional impact of their later material and their ability to really sustain a song and take it in more interesting directions. Early Fishmans are quick to establish an easy going beat and layer some of that trademark kitschy shibuya-kei style electronic samples on top of it and call it a day. It’s not bad at all, most of it is catchy as hell, but it’s hardly interesting. Worst of all, there are a few songs on here that start out amazing, and then they just end out of nowhere. Take Smilin' Days, Summer Holiday for example. It has those elements I was praising in my previous review combined with those weirdly awesome vocals. They even bring in some -- dare I say it -- (((jazz))) instrumentation that fits perfectly with this hip-hop beat. I’m jamming out to this song right, and then it just ends so abruptly at about 2:30 that it’s almost comical. It transitions into this more straightforward and boring dub number that does not take advantage of Shinji’s vocals at all. It’s awkward as fuck. Oh well, at least the bass is tight as always. This album is definitely the most fun of the three, and it’s the first that I’d recommend for easy listening purposes. It’s a very happy album. I can give it that much credit. Hopefully Orange and Kuchu Camp deliver because I’m liking what this band has to offer, as long as they can crystallize the good stuff.

>>72312201
but yes i agree it was a bad idea
>>
>>72312201
I believe yes, falsetto is only on Adventures if I recall correctly. However, nearly all of your singing on the album is higher than what is natural for your voice. (The opening track features moments where you are singing more naturally. Adventures also features times where you journey into lower-than-natural-sounding tones.)

Overall, though, I'd say your vocals are quite weak. Trust me, I'm a pretend professional. My point would be, it seems like you don't have singing experience. If you don't have the experience, you will get the best tone when singing at or near your natural speaking pitch.
>>
>>72312265
from my point of view I'm awful at every pitch but thank you very much for the advice

The only other song from 98.12.28 that's not on a studio album is Oh! Slime, based on Oh! Crime, which is a song they opened all of their live sets with. Would HIGHLY rec hearing the version from "Oh! a story about my class? Basically, it's a really big lecture hall and these dudes who thought it was gonna be like an EDM class were pissed that we were listening to a lot of early avant-garde/electronic/electroaccoustic pieces instead of fucking deadmaufive or something. The instructor is Japanese and doesn't speak 100% perfect English, so if a bunch of people start talking loudly they overpower her so easy. They were all loud and obnoxious and super rude, so it's happened a lot so far. Most of them didn't show up today either because they dropped or because it's 4/20. I hope it's the former frankly.

Looking into it now and it looks like a pretty serious course for musicians and music students, so idk if a random 3rd year engineer could just hop in. Also it requires creating pieces weekly and performing pieces in a concert hall... so HMMM maybe not.

Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire
>Jazz-Rock, Jazz-Fusion

This weirdly sounds like video game music. I feel like I should be playing Sonic or Metroid while listening to this. There’s that same ridiculously speedy guitar all over the place on here. Overall, it’s too noodly and proggy for my taste but it isn’t bad. Definitely pales in comparison to their debut though, it’s lacking the psychedelic kinda feel that I got from that one. Or something in general, I can’t quite peg it down. Not sure what else to say, it’s impressive musically - Cobham and McLaughlin both rip it up on here - it just isn’t my thing. “Open Country Joy” is really tight though.

Unless you have to do a lot of manual studio stuff like messing with tape loops and overdubbing I really doubt it would take more than 10 minutes to come up with a piece that would warrant an A+

>>72315011
It's awesome! We started out talking about electronic music inception, early synthesized music, avant-garde/electroacoustic music, and concrete. Today we spend most of the time talking about modern studio techniques, commonplace electric instruments such as guitar/bass/synth, overdubbing, how the Beatles incorporated/popularized recording techniques in popular music like backwards recording, leslie speakers, and bunch of other studio shit. We also spent a good 45 minutes on Eno.

>Gnaw Their Tongues - Per Flagellum Sanguemque, Tenebras Veneramus

One of you guys rec'd this to me, forget who. It was really good, sort of felt like a discount Paysage d'Hiver. Only downside is that the tracks, and I guess the album as a whole, felt like they didn't have any structure and there wasn't any progression. This is still going to get a high rating regardless of that though because of how fucking awesome it sounded.

4/5
>Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique

This is my second time hearing this, the first I thought it was alright and gave it a 3/5. I liked it a lot more this time around. I really dig the aesthetic of it, it sounds like something you'd hear on a 90s skateboarding tape or something. Very juvenile and fun, also sort of punk-y. I liked how they the mc's would split up lines between them, sometimes going back and forth between single words. It was fun, and sounded like something you and a bro would memorize and rap in the car or something. One thing I noticed though is I've heard this described as being packed to the brim with samples, and I guess I didn't really hear them? I mean I definitely heard some, but it wasn't the "new sample every 5 seconds" kind of plunderphonics like people make it out to be. Why wasn't I hearing it? Were the beats themselves samples or something? I did think the Sgt. Pepper samples on Sound of Sience were pretty cool though.

4/5
>Slowdive - Slowdive

I LOVE Souvlaki, that shit is my jam, so of course I was hype for this. After hearing the Star Roving single, I was expecting to be let down, but this was actually good. It didn't live up to Souvlaki but I wasn't really expecting it to. Decent comeback I guess.

>>
>>72315151
>Were the beats themselves samples or something?

Yeah man, most of the beats themselves are pretty much completely composed of samples iirc. On a quick look, the drums, bass line, scratches, bong hit and vocal clips on "Shake Your Rump" are all all samples. Basically everything except the Beastie Boys rapping isn't original material. The Dust Brothers brought in 105 samples for that record, 24 on that last track alone and they didn't have to go through half the shit most producers do now.

But yeah Paul's Boutique is kind of a landmark in hip-hop sampling and it's something that basically couldn't happen today. Same goes for most of the stuff Bomb Squad produced. Shit would be so expensive to make now

hey college kids, as an 18 year old senior whom is going to Double Major at a pretty good liberal arts school, is my life going to be invaded by normies?
>>
>>72315548
Normies are everywhere, so yes.

Get involved with weird clubs. Go to house shows. If your college has a FB page or something for people looking for roommates, use that to your advantage.

You'll probably want to move off campus ASAP, but you should try living on campus for at least one semester. (pst. often, living off-campus is much cheaper than the dorms, though you have to cook your own shit).

Buy your textbooks online and NOT from the bookstore if possible.

If you're in a big lecture hall don't ask to go to the bathroom.

What are you planning on majoring in?
