Why are we going so fast again?

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time. This community is so inclusive that even communists and fascists coexist!

Some of the stuff I have been listening to throughout the last month are in that chart. A lot of what usually ends up being listened to is mostly just stuff I work out to so it skews a lot.. That being said, would love more workout music, stuff like more aggressive hip hop (no Death Grips) and high energy music like Discharge.

Causa Sui - Summer Sessions Vol 3
>Psych rock, Stoner rock, BAND JAM THANK YOU MA'AM GET ON THE FLOOR AND

A jam session album by some dudes in Denmark. Nothing innovative, but some decent(if lo-fi) recordings.

First a mesmerizing gaze into a desert with electric guitar and saxophone, Eugenie expands into heavier rock while the sax is allowed some freedom. Red Valley focuses drops the sax and keeps the song structure-- not nearly as ear-grabbing as the first track. Manifestations of Summer is much more active (the very specific usage of the cowbell contributed to most of this rating).

Decently enjoyable for a jam session and re-listenable, but not my greatest interest.

7/10
Tomita - Snowflakes are Dancing
>Progressive Electronic

A romantic-era composition released in 1974, produced on one Moog synthesizer, arrangements of Claude Debussy's work.

What can I say. It's silky smooth synth interpretations of already gorgeous piano works. I also learned a term for one of my favorite concepts in music composition: word Painting (or tone painting), writing music that reflects the literal meaning of a song.

What was originally waterfall pianos or orchestral currents, is now

Of course it can feel a bit corny at times, but it doesn't destroy the spaciness of the atmosphere. And I'm not talking Grouper AIA space, but the pioneer kind of space you'd expect from Disney.

Islaja - Ulual YYY
>Free Folk, Psychedelic Folk

Stays mostly grounded with its sound but varied with (mainly jazz) instrumentation, making for a fairly accessible and consistent album. Vocals remind me of Bjork but quieter and less out there. Actually fairly comfy.

7/10
Melt Yourself Down - Melt Yourself Down
>Afrobeat w/punk and a dash o noise

Compressed, screaming saxophones, and compressed, screaming men. Plus, a mix of noisy electronics and punk? Phew. This album is a fireball of energy, and a standout genre-wise

But there's no breaks to it until the 6th track, and you're already drained by all the fuzziness at that point. Of course, the album is meant to be a full rush, but the melodies did feel a tad too repetitive side by side with each track.

Oh, and the closer was pretty sick. With the opener and We Are Enough, they were my favorite tracks.

6.5/10, will keep this album to revisit.

>hotel books - i'm almost happy here, but i never feel at home
yeah if you throw enough shit at the wall some of it will stick -the album. the vocal delivery, overwrought lyrics and mostly bland 'emo drone' music is boring and sappy except for the brief few occasions where it all comes together in the perfect storm of emotional emo, and the lyrics feel like they mean something and the music seems like a fitting backing. sure there's promise and potential but fuck at what cost?
2/5

>fire! orchestra - ritual
v v hectic, noisy, tribal-esque. the drums and vocals are a highlight and the slower pieces seem to shake the foundations of the studio. in places it does however become sluggish and the orchestra doesn't feel like it's at its most creative - almost like it could slam out albums like this in their sleep.but i've never met a fire! i didn't like
3.5/5

>the clancy brothers and tommy makem - hearty and hellish!
great live document of their singalong irish standards and transcendental between tracks banter - just a whale of a time and you feel like a part of a crowd which is what all great live albums do. probably one of the strongest cohesive efforts from the group as well

A couple times a month I'll leave /daily/ and actually browse other threads on /mu/. Recently, I found one that was pretty interesting: Artists' "Bacon Number" or "Degrees of Separation". You think of two artists, then try to link the two together by artists they've either collaborated with or been in the same band with. It's pretty interesting when you have RYM as a tool. It's pretty surprising when you find out who

For example, would it be possible to link Merzbow and The Offspring? Actually, it's pretty easy.

Merzbow collaborated with Jamie Stewart on MERZXIU, and Jamie Stewart collaborated with Oxbow's Eugene Robinson on Sal Mineo. Eugene Robinson did the backing vocals on The Dead Kennedy's Frankenchrist, and the Dead Kennedy's member Jello Biafra did the backing vocals on The Offspring's Ixnay on the Hombre.

So in order
Merzbow -> Jamie Stewart -> Eugene Robinson -> Dead Kennedy's -> Jello Biafra -> The Offspring
Not actually that many steps only 5 degrees of separation.

Naturally, I tried applying this to Fishmans. How can we relate Shinji Sato to other artists using the fewest degrees of separation?

Well, Fishman's drummer, Kin-Ichi Montegi played percussion for Buffalo Daughter's album New Rock. A couple of the members in Buffalo Daughter were in the Doopees, and Yann Tomita from the Doopees, who arranged/produced Boredoms' Super Roots 8. From there, using Yamatsuka Eye, the possibilities are endless. We can use him to connect us to John Zorn through Naked City to Electric Masada, Mike Patton, and the plethora of jazz musicians he's collaborated with.

Alternatively, we could've used EYE to draw a connection to Otomo Yoshihide, who collaborated on an "untitled" EP in 1996. From him, we can draw a line to Keith Rowe from their collaboration on "Thumb" to Keiji Haino, Jim O'Rourke, to Sonic Youth, to Thurston Moore, to Beck, etc etc etc.

Kinda pointless, but it's something I thought I'd talk about real quick, because I think it's kind of fun.

In 1983, The Edge of U2 collaborated with Jah Wobble of Public Image Ltd, Jaki Liebezeit and Holger Czukay of Can, New York disco producer François Kevorkian, and composer Arthur Russell on the "Snake Charmer" LP. The title track would become a regular staple of influential New York City nightclub, the Paradise Garage.

The album was engineered by legendary dub reggae studio engineer Paul "Groucho" Smykle and future The Smiths and Blur producer Stephen Street. It also featured additional musical contributions from jazz vocalist Marcella Allen, frequent Jah Wobble collaborators Animal, Ben Mandelson, Ollie Marland and Neville Murray, as well as original Public Image Ltd drummer, Jim Walker

hello hi.

>>72317669
Merzbow is extremely popular, and you know what I mean. The database is extremely limited and the code for finding related artists is flawed.

Take this for example:
http://www.whosampled.com/six-degrees/search/?artist1=Xiu+Xiu&artist2=Merzbow

This could've been done with ONE degree of separation, but for some reason it chooses three.

A neat idea if you want to test two very popular artists but otherwise useless if you just take the time to do it manually.

also this >>72317699

alright i'm going to take a break from this paper i'm writing at 2 am to try and link Blind Willie Johnson and Xxxtentacion. and i'm going to be expanding my horizons to anything listed on the "credits" box in rym, so liner notes/art/production is fair game.

Janet Boye did art direction on 1998's Dark Was the Night compilation. Back in 1991, she did the cover art to Del the Funky Homosapien's I Wish My Brother George Was Here. Del the Funky Homosapien collabed with Gorillaz on "Clint Eastwood" in 2001. In 2003, Gorillaz collaborated with MF DOOM on "November Has Come". In 2014, MF DOOM was featured on Ghostface Killah & BADBADNOTGOOD's "Ray Gun". Just this year, Denzel Curry and BADBADNOTGOOD put out the "Ultimate / Sick & Tired" single. And in 2016, Xxxtentacion and Denzel Curry collabed on the "Raider Clan Killa" single.

hahaha holy hell

I think covers aren't really a connection though. Only if the artists have collaborated or they are credited as a musician in an album. Sampling/covering doesn't count because the musicians never actually met.

Blind Willie Johnson is pretty hard if not impossible to do this with, as not many people are known to have made contact with him, like, ever. I myself haven't been able to find many people (let alone musicians) who recorded with, recorded with, or even SAW the guy. Dude's a total mystery.

HOWEVER.

Jason Aldean once was featured on a Ludacris EP, and Ludacris has been featured on a Snoop Dog album. Meaning...

Fishmans -> Buffalo Daughter -> Doopees -> -> Boredoms-> EYE -> Zorn -> Mike Patton -> Deltron 3030 -> Del the Funkee Homosapian -> Ice Cube -> Dr. Dre -> Snoop Dog -> Ludacris -> Jason Aldean

The world of music is beautiful, innit?

>>
>>72318061
I thought for a second it might be possible, as on one of his comps someone named "Willie Harris" is attributed as a backup vocalist. From there, I could draw a lot of interesting connections, but it's actually referring to Willie B. Harris, his first wife. Easy mistake to make, but it got my hopes up so easily :/

If ONLY I knew who recorded Blind Willie Johnson or who had a hand in the creation of his music I would be able to make those connections so much easier, but I don't even think that should really count, because those people aren't even really musicians and shouldn't be qualified.

>>72318091
So true but I love it. It opens up so many possibilities. Using EYE from Boredoms is practically cheating too, as that dude is in fucking EVERYTHING.

>>72318097

For those trying to also make interesting connections: Another super OP artist is Johnny Cash.

Not only has Cash collaborated with countless artists like Will Oldham, Nick Cave, and Tom Petty on his "American" Series, but he also was in The Million Dollar Quartet with Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis. Not to mention the Highwaymen with Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Waylon Jennings. Shit's nuts.

Derek Bailey, Jamaaladeen Tacuma & Calvin Weston - Mirakle (2000)
>free jazz, jazz-funk

Derek Bailey's avant-garde improv noodling over some killer jazz-funk instrumentals. Tacuma on bass and Weston and drums is a killer combination, but I'm really not sure if they mesh well with Bailey. They're all wonderful individually, and occasionally they combine absolutely /perfectly/, but oftentimes Bailey's freeform style clashes with the tightness of Tacuma and Weston's rhythm section. It's a cool dissonance, but one that further blurs the awkward line between the avant-garde and the straight-up funk. Still, it's such a damn cool combinations of styles that the slight awkwardness can't do much to hurt it. This stuff mostly slays, and it's a really cool change in style for Bailey.

3.0-

山本邦山 - 銀界 (Silver World) (1977)
>post-bop

Ultra-chill smooth-jazz that's not smooth jazz (I hope my delirious mind is getting it's point across). Yamamoto's flute work is inherently chill, it's calming, soothing, and above all else, it's deceptively complex. Certainly doesn't make for much of an engaging jazz album, though. The flute rarely serves as a powerful enough instrument to lead a jazz album, and it doesn't help that it's often pushed to the side to make way for the other instruments. But all the other performances are rock-solid, and it's almost better to take this as a folk album rather than a jazz album since it's structured in such an idiosyncratic manner, with the etheral flute as an almost new age-y lead instrument. Not quite the exceptional record I was expecting, but really cool in its own right.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - (pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd) (1973)
>southern rock

Mostly shitty southern rock that's redeemed by a couple of things. Firstly, the blues influence is actually mostly tasteful. It's not good, mind you, but it's done well and with a whole lot of respect for the genre. Secondly, fucking "Free Bird". I know how much of a cliche that song is, but that solo will be forever etched as one of the most triumphant moments in classic rock history, it doesn't get old. "Tuesday's Gone" is another decent track that happens to go on for far too long. The rest is dreck, frankly.

Placebo - Meds
>Alternative Rock, Emo, ugh-core

ugh

Cons:
>Smells like Evanescence round here
>Really uninspired guitar and drum work
>Singer nasal accent sounds like 21 pilots at points, is at its worst when he's talk-singing. Otherwise he's serviceable
>actually
>Singer needs a deck in the face
>Lyrics
>A piano is played alone by itself while the singer talks
>LYRICS

Pros:
>Thank goodness for that huge sound engineer list. Without them, this would have been unlistenable
>Some songs manage to be catchy even with their lyrics
>The string section are also a good touch
>Follow the Cops Back Home was generic but an actual good break in the album
>Pierrot the Clown actually made me laugh just for the image of a domestically abused clown and the singer feeling coming out of the closet for him
>Kate Bush bonus track is mhmmmmm
>And the other bonus track too is mhmmmm

It's not the worse thing, so I'll be generous

Nicolas Jaar - Space Is Only Noise
>Microhouse, Downtempo

This is a strange album, which is saying a lot. But strange is always interesting, especially when it's "modern composer crossing into electronic" strange.

You'll probably notice the sample choices first. Something being dropped, the esophagus at work, water's movements (which I find always find gross when used as a sample). Jaar manages to combine discomfort with warmth in the first tracks of the Space Is Only Noise, and it really does feel alien.

The album's cover art depicts the album's atmosphere fairly well; a downtrodden ground with who knows what foreign materials, and a sleeping child in a stroller. Complex life and complex mess, alchemized into grizzly textures that sound like they shouldn't work together. Sometimes, they don't.

The sampling isn't quite clean, and feels like Pogo in that the aftereffects of being sliced into serviceable are quite obvious. Keep Me There and Problem with the Sun in particular has some drab and irritating vocal samples, but a sax thrown around the room shows that Jaar isn't hopeless when it comes to this kind of work.

This whole album reminds me VERY much of Pogo -- the sampling, the arrangement, the pitch shifting. What's always me much about his work, while catchy and creative with its source material, there was always a manufactured and plastic impression left in each track. Jaar struggles with this same issue in this album; while his background knowledge assists in pulling from various sources for the album, but he doesn't smooth it out.

The lyrics are also questionable. Space is Only Noise If You Can See is the biggest suspect here. Maybe if their delivery wasn't so one-dimensional, they'd grab me a bit more. It's not like I don't hate cryptic lyrics, but it really doesn't feel like there's something I haven't been told already by Jaar himself.

Almost Fell is one of the more pleasant tracks, constantly filling the ear with warmth. Balance Her In Between Your Eyes is another standout, with the first actual pleasant choice of vocals (kinda).

But in the end, grey doesn't grab me. Jaar is vivid at best, dilettante at worst. It's really missing something.

>Jandek - Ready for the House
I liked this. Jandek's delivery is really great. He evokes so much disturbed emotion through his creaking voice and his eerie lyrics. Sure, the guitar is very samey, but it works for this album. Like many others have said, this album paints a great painting of depression as bleak, uncomfortable, and ugly. I'll be revisiting this.

The guitar work on these songs was very good. There were some great songs on here like Teenage Caveman, Bury the Hammer, and Godsend. I wasn't a big fan of the vocals at first, but they grew on me quick. The whole album felt very warm and fuzzy, which I like. I'll be revisiting this too.

>yamir vs EthyBoy

>Raein - Nati da altri padri
After American Football, all emo-related things could basically be divided between the twinkly camp and the skramz camp and both styles are very predictable since bands that try to innovate upon these styles are rare (and the ones that try to innovate don't even necessarily succeed at making good music). In any case, I don't have a lot of patience with skramz, although you could do worse than this album. There's some tight riffs going on, undeniably, but it still all inevitably feels like a deja vu. Just a bit of a boring genre, really. 2.0

>Nikhil Banerjee - Afternoon Ragas
I find it hard to differentiate between hindustani classical music artists, they all roughly do the same thing. What they do I like very much, however, and this album's among the more enjoyable ones in the genre I've heard. 4.0-

>>72328755
Replica is what I'd call 10/10 album-- there's a shared load between each track, forming a very coherent set and leaving a deep impression overall. And the sampling paired with OPN's well known sound is super compatible

R+7 was more like a modern composition-- it restrained itself to communicate its ideas clearer. It felt a bit more sterile and was less memorable in some spots, even though the former trait is probably what Lopatin was going for.

That and I literally only remember one track from R Plus Seven compared to the 7 landmarks of Replica

I think while compositionally R+7 is more interesting, it lacks the emotional impact of Replica and the incredible use of samples that he made with analog(!) equipment.

I hate to use the word "forced", but I do feel like the midi strings an choir samples in R+7 have too much of a cheesy and false emotional impact. Still, I like the album.

I MADE A PROMISE TO THESE PEOPLE
>>
>>72329435
>I do feel like the midi strings an choir samples in R+7 have too much of a cheesy and false emotional impact.
i like the album so much because of how the aesthetic of cheesy new age is used in contrast to genuine composition and brief samples of human interaction, presenting a symbolic story of disassociation from society via the veil of social technology.

I guess this is like half hip-hop b/c I'm not creative when discovering music

Snoop Dogg - Paid tha Cost to Be da Bo$$
>West Coast Hip-Hop

First of all - what is this title? Second, why do I like Snoop so much? This is the 10th (fucking kill me) album of his I’ve heard and I’ve only found one that’s anywhere near Doggystyle and two other solid/consistent releases. I love him but hate him so much God damn. I can’t think of weirder mainstream hip-hop career. He has one of my all-time favorites in Doggystyle but after that it’s so hit or miss. After getting stuck in the collapse of Death Row, he cranked out a shitty album to fulfill his contract, ran to No Limit, which also fell apart and butchered 2/3 of his albums (his best had his own producers, who would’ve thought?). After that he was kinda never the same. All of his albums have a few awesome songs throughout the laziness though.

Coming off his NL tenure, Snoop signed a new deal which gave him access to some of the genre’s top producers. Which is a huge step up from those sacks of shit at NL. As a result, the beats are way better and Snoop reinvents himself as a suave pimp rapper instead of whatever he was just before. “Lollipop” is prime Just Blaze, with flutes, smooth guitar work and off-kilter drumming complementing Snoop, Jay Z and Nate Dogg perfectly. “Beautiful” is amazing and “The One and Only” and “Batman and Robin” (fuck man) are classic Premier. And “Paper’d Up” has that Z-Ro “Mo City Don” beat I absolutely love (those flutes again). Otherwise, this album is filled with smooth but kinda unambitious beats.

Overall, Snoop’s switch from hardcore to a pimp rapper is a nice change of pace. This album unfortunately drags (whhyyy do you insist on making 80 minute albums Snoop?). But his smooth flow and personality manage to carry most of the tracks in one way or another. Not quite prime Snoop but it’s definitely one of his better albums.

Just got banned from RYM, reasoning being:
>You can only have one account to rate the same things. Decide which you want to keep.

What the fuck? I've literally never had a second account, except for when I moved all of my ratings to another one using the subscriber feature, but even that doesn't really count because my old account "papasmurph1" links to I_AM_FISH anyways. Is there someone I'm aware of that's copying my ratings or something? What the hell is happening?

now it's time!
welcome to my new fucking tourney, with restrictions so ridiculous you'll sorta squint at this post for a few seconds after reading them!

for the first round, the restriction is as follows:
take the name you post with around here and choose either the first letter or the last letter. THEN recommend me an album 90 minutes or less that is tagged on rateyourmusic.com with at least one genre that starts with the same letter you chose! if you feel the need, post the letter along with the rec when you rec. i'll be verifying each individually.

you can find my taste at rateyourmusic.com/~tripup
