meme machine broke...

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time. This community is so inclusive that even communists and fascists coexist!

Hermann Nitsch - Das 6-Tage-Spiel Das 6-Tage-Spiel Des Orgien Mysterien Theaters
>Noise, Drone, Classical, Field Recordings

I realized that I had also downloaded a huge box set of 48 hours of what seemed to be a large portion of Nitsch's work. SO I opted to listen to "Day 5" of the 3 albums on RYM.

It seems this album set was recorded in a six day "play" in 1998, Austria. The performance is accompanied by animal blood and dismemberment, hundreds of participants, a 300 page score, and the recordings of people, animals, and machines, involved or not. Performances occurred in Nitsch's castle, where meals were also served for its participants: You can hear the clinking of plates in Gregorian Chant.

>...4 orchestra groups, a substantial percussion ensemble, two folkmusic/festival bands, an amplified synthesizer, a 100 voice choir.

What I'm getting from this is a man that wanted to reach back to ancient civilizations, when celebrations would last weeks, and revive it for a fleeting moment.

"String Quartet (Sound-Walls) In The Chestnutt Grove" features an unnerving string group, appearing and vanishing amongst what could be other participants or bystanders. The first "Yard Action Continues" track may remind some of Godspeed You! Black Emperor's F#A#. "Action With Bull"'s orchestra roars while the sky falls, and "Finale" blares a warning horn among a synth's single note, discordant percussion, and countless small sounds from countless other sources.

The atmosphere and imagery would have been very strong if it weren't for the presence of people in the recording, making it feel like you're being zapped in and out of disassociation. Imagine how much more powerful it would have been having been there and not just sitting in a room listening to it.

Still, this was worth a taste, even while knowing I got fucking memed and no one in their right mind on /daily/ is actually gonna listen to all of this.

>vargdod - brutal disciplin
aside from "starved to death," this is not my type of bleep. i like that track almost solely because of the really pretty organ that underscores the whole thing. the rest does very little for me - the beats walk a fine line between snoozefest and compelling/quirky. for me there was a real lack of synthesis of musical ideas here, everything felt sort of thrown together.

Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Ensemble - Dreams
>Japanese Vocal Jazz, Free Jazz

Damn the credits on this album are tight

Opening with a waltz of sorts, and what can only be described as a young girl with a cold trying to sing (Phew?). With low starting expectations, I was more than happy to actually get a really tight jazz album, with a good amount of experimentation to keep it from becoming stale. Sachiko M's fantastic sine wave work, for example (top o' the line), turns out to be the binding glue for much of the album.

Thankfully, Yume follows with some lazy music for the sunset of a hot day-- and cleaner vocals by Jun Togawa(?). Morning sees the next day off with the yawns of Tsugami and Kikuchi's saxaphones, and Yoshigaki's wily trumpet. Teinen Pushiganga gallops with its acoustic guitar and tribal melody, and Toi Hibiki features Sachiko M's gentle sine waves while watching the day's end from outside the city.

Eureka brings back the dying Phew from the opening, before being reassured by Togawa. That is, until it cuts off into eerie static and background noise (calm before the storm, as it turns out). Resuming once again with spoken words and the pluckings of bass and flowing drums, the track begins to get a little crazy with the drums going ham and Sachiko doing her thing, and then even more as the happy facade slips off to become straight up free jazz. Knew this was coming after reading Blapp's review, but didn't make it any less enjoyable to hear pandemonium unfold.

and wtf the closing track is just as chaotic get me off this wild ride

its pretty good give it a listen

/blog/ time

I bought a new (OLD) bike a couple of weeks ago, but I couldn't have it delivered to me until just this weekend. Recently got it, and oh em gee it is in such shit condition compared to what was promised. The guy who sold it said it was in good condition and everything works as it should, the shifters are changed from Campagnolo to Huret, everything else is original. Welp, it's not, and nothing works. Front derailleur, brakes and brake levers are all changed to non-campy components. Rear derailleur hanger is bent, and so is the derailleur itself. The wheels are in poor condition, untrued and with bent spokes. The front tyre is literally broken, and both are in shitty condition. The frame is scratched. The chain is loose.

Basically almost everything is in NOT-good condition. I emailed him saying this, and saying I feel like I shouldn't have paid this much for a bike in this condition, to which he replies "I don't think I was unfair, what a shame".

I slightly enjoyed the more industrial, heavy, apocalyptic vibe I got from this, I'm just not sure I enjoyed all of it in a bleep context. I also felt the song structure lacked much at all, and nothing really had any togetherness or a conclusion. To some that may be appealing, and this was probably created for people that typically enjoy bleeps more, but I just can't see myself getting into it much.

Found myself adding more and more to the mini chart I made, so decided to expand it into this so I can add more if I need to (which I may or may not).

>Cattle Decapitation - To Serve Man

Not as good instrumentally, the vocals were still satisfying as usual

3.5/5

>Endon - Mama

This shit was just pure evil, tortured screams behind noisecore

4/5

>GFOTY - Call Him a Doctor

"Call Him a Doctor" and "You Don't" were amazing songs, the rest was decent.

3.5/5

>Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead / Boys

Don't understand why this is unanimously loved honestly. It wasn't bad, but definitely not something I'd expect to be bolded if it weren't for the historical significance.

3/5
>>

4/5

>Blumchen - Herzfrequenz
This didn't really resonate with me, unfortunately. I dug it while I was listening to it, but I'm not sure how often I'll revisit it. There were some pretty sweet moments, like the keys on Liebe Liebe, and I liked the crowd noises in the background on some of the songs. But yeah, not much else I found too memorable.
2.5+

>chris††† - no lives matter
This was some pretty sick vaporwave. I loved the dark, melancholy atmosphere. It's an atmosphere I don't think you hear in vaporwave often. The samples on this are sick, ranging from Beach Boys to YTP memes. Speaking of YTP memes, theres a whole sound collage of them on this album, and its pretty freaky. Funny, but freaky. I liked the harsher tracks on here like judas inside, but most of the tracks are just very mellow and moody. It's like if Replica was darker than it already is. I liked this a lot, and might bump it to a 3.5 in the future.
3.0+ (if anyone knows the sample on what feeling lmk, its killing me)

>DJ Screw - Leanin on a Switch
Man, none of these screwtapes so far are hitting me the same way 3 n tha Mornin did. This was a neat listen, but I honestly got bored quick. The beats weren't captivating enough for me, and I could only find a version that was 192kbps, so I could barely hear and understand the lyrics. I still have 3 more tapes to go, hopefully one of them will live up to 3 n tha Mornin for me.

Hey /daily/ i'm interviewing a rapper at 7:30 for my local radio station. What questions should I ask him? I got:

>What inspired you to start rapping?

>Who are some of your favorite hip-hop artists? Is their style reflected in your music?

>What do you think of the current hip-hop scene? What do you like/dislike about it?

>Do you listen to other genres of music? Have any none-hip hop artists influenced your work?

Question for those who use RYM and listen to more classical that I do: What's the best way to find a highly-rated album by a composer I want to listen to more of?

For example, let's say I wanted to hear more of Bela Bartok. So I go one his RYM page, but I only find albums that have, at the most, 18 ratings. Most have 0-2:
https://rateyourmusic.com/artist/bela_bartok

My question is how do I filter the results so that I can end up with more popular albums from the composer's work like https://rateyourmusic.com/release/comp/chicago_symphony_orchestra_fritz_reiner/concerto_for_orchestra__music_for_strings__percussion_and_celesta__hungarian_sketches/ for example, which has 150+ ratings.

Is there an easier way to find good classical albums when searching for a composer on RYM, or is RYM just not a good tool to use for this?

>>72288277
just go to the /daily/ website in the OP silly head
>>
>>72288089

>>72288145

>>
>>72288329
RYM just not a good tool to use for this
me i like to go to different sites to look for performances (like piano sites for piano stuff) or ask someone or just go for the big names

alternatively you can click on a particular work of a composer on the list and see all the stuff listed there, it should have all the performances. note that a lot of stuff isn't even added on rym tho

This was a fantastic set of ambient, drone, and almost lowercase type tracks. My favorites would have to be the John Cassavetes pieces. The first was wonderfully warm, and the second was triumphant. Unbelievably lush, I had no idea what to expect going into this but I loved this. The first three tracks sounded really foresty (if that makes any sense), and then the last 4 were even more comfy. Pop 4 is probably my favorite, that kick drum does a lot for the track. But yeah, loved this.

DJ Krush - Meiso (1995)
>instrumental hip hop, trip hop

Some decent beats, nothing great but a nice display of a great producers techniques. When it focuses on trip hop/downtempo stuff it tends to suffer, it's somewhat of an uninteresting musical aesthetic to begin with and Krush does little to make it any more interesting. This focus does produce a great collaboration with DJ Shadow, but it's obvious that the track is very heavily influenced by Shadow, cut-up "Midnight in a Perfect World" drums and all. The boom bap stuff is where this album gets really good. I really wish this sound had more emphasis put upon it, because all the tracks in the style sound great, mainly because the drums truly hit hard. Krush would do wonders with producing straight boom bap, but the trip hop stuff isn't done well, it's too damn boring.

2.5+

Ground-Zero - Null & Void (1995)
>experimental rock, avant-prog

Really weak stuff from this band. The sampling isn't nearly as interesting as it is on Revolutionary Pekinese Opera, and the straight-up prog isn't as good as it is on Plays Standards. The prog is a bit too simple (comparitively, at least), and the sampling is pretty much just samples of fanfare and anthems. It's a cool idea but they get old quickly, the group seems like they have little else to draw from in terms of samples. Pretty much every member of this group has better stuff.

2.0+

Ilyas Ahmed - Between Two Skies (2005)
>free folk

Some of the best "new weird america" stuff I've heard. The album tends to repeat itself fairly often, but its mixture of icy drone and warm, soft guitar picking is really evocative, and super cozy as well. Not much else to say, really. It's on the less "weird" side of "new weird america", but it's a very nice folk album nonetheless.

you dont need to be happy with something to release it do you know how many bad songs i've knowingly released

taste is subjective (or so they say...) so what you think is hot trash (while it probably is) some other person might really like it, especially if you post it in a place like 4chan.

Too $hort - Gettin’ It (Album Number 10)
>West Coast Hip-Hop, Mobb Music

In 1996, while most rappers were maybe on their first or second release, Short was TEN deep. Lord this guy has been making music forever, I mean who was even rapping in ‘83? On the west coast? Anyway, Short was the first pimp rapper and basically has continued that schtick for about 30 years. Short kinda cools off on it during parts of it, talking about some other stuff occasionally. It’s still a heavy theme but it’s a change of pace, all things considered.

The title track opens the album with a bang - and good lord is it good. It’s a collab with Parliament/Funkadelic and these guys throw down an amazing instrumental. The production is so much better than his 80s material, with catchy bass, wavy synths - and a saxophone. That sax just waves through the whole track gracefully and closes the song off with a tight little solo. Fuck, it’s exactly what I want. About 10X better than his first few albums already.

On “Survivin The Game” and “That’s Why”, Short kind of addresses his long-standing position in hip-hop. “Bad Ways” is more of a traditional Short track, as he raps about all the stupid shit he’s been doing - including macking on your wife. The middle of the album is basically all pimping songs - but damn they’re good. The beats are so ridiculously funky, which helps carry the limited subject matter. There’s even a suave little acoustic guitar sample on “Buy You Some” that works so well. Not that Short is a bad rapper though - he just doesn’t have much to talk about.

Perhaps limited in scope and carried by production - but damn those beats are awesome.

I'm hopping on the freeform bandwagon I guess (and I'm stealing jangle's white album idea because it's cute).

>of Montreal - False Priest
False Priest was good but inconsistent. Strange choice of features (Janelle Monae and Solange), although they didn't contribute much.

>Coil - Horse Rotorvator
I've been meaning to listen to Horse Rotorvator for some time, and it started out promising. The first few tracks were strange pop songs sung by Balance backed by weird, rhythmic industrial instrumentals. It sort of fell off on side B though, not much did anything for me there and the industrial experiments had been done better by TG almost a decade earlier. The closer was good though. I guess I'm more of a fan of what was inspired by the industrial movement than the actual movement itself.

>Aaron Dilloway - Songs About Jason
(Expect a lot of Dilloway on this chart, as I've been going through his intriguing discog.) Aaron Dilloway doesn't bring the noise this time, at least at first. Eerie tape loops that create dark ambience are used throughout, until the noise kicks in for the last two minutes. He does everything well here rather effectively, although I wish there was a better transition between the drone section and the noise section on side B.

Grouper - AIA Alien Observer

I already really like Grouper's stuff so this was an easy one. I've have a lot of uni work recently so I've been playing this on loop, to me this is as if she though Dragging A Dead Dear wasn't dreamy enough and decided to step it up a notch. I really enjoy all the ambient soundscapes on here, and when a melody emerges from the layers of reverb it is often really beautiful. The title track has the most identifiable vocals and lyrics, and probably sticks out as the most fleshed out song of the bunch. The last track is also a really beautiful, minimal piano (?) piece, which ends the album perfectly. This is easily an 8

listened to some long ones tonight
>Raymond Scott - Manhattan Research Inc
Listening to this felt like I was in a time capsule, yet I was still listening to the future. If that makes sense. Raymond Scott packs 69 of his electronic works clocking in at 2 hours of music. This album (compilation?) is filled to the brim with tons of different ideas. It could go from a musique concrete song, to an advertisement. And it does, multiple times. The jingles on this are so enjoyable to listen to, the concrete is suspenseful and mind bending, and then theres simple electronic songs that are nice and poppy and happy. And then there's songs like Limbo: The Organized Mind, which I don't even know how to categorized. All in all, the 2 hours I spent listening to this flew by. I had tons of fun with this album, and I'll definitely be coming back to it often.

Is it even possible for me to pan something that someone actually cares about?

Daughters - Daughters
Just the kind of abrasive dirt sounding noise rock I'm into, sounds a bit like early Mastodon at points which I'm into, doesn't outstay it's welcome, me likey

Ween - The Pod
I like every song here except for Molly, and I can never tell if a statement like that is heresy when it comes to Ween, not the best album I've heard out of them, not the worst, certainly understand how people find this their most inaccessible

Raincoats - Odyshape
liked the different approach on this album, it's more stripped back, not much to say otherwise

Sondre Lerche - Pleasure
Sondre Lerche by way of Tame Impala by way of Scandanavian indie rock, it's a combination that works but only just barely, he's done better

Pere Ubu - Terminal Tower
Pere Ubu is fun, I keep confusing them for The Pop Group, which is sad because they in no way deserve that comparison, learnt something, before Pere Ubu formed multiple members were in Rocket From the Tombs, this comp is good

Beck - Sea Change
I mean, it's kind of like Beck is pulling a Drake here, but he pulls a Drake so well

芸能山城組 - Symphonic Suite AKIRA (1988)
>film score

As a disclaimer, I've never seen Akira, so I don't know what the hell I'm doing talking about its score, since a score is inherently meant to be judged with a film. Then again, everybody and their mother loves A Tribute to Jack Johnson, and no one's ever seen the actual movie, so fuck it. The sound of 芸能山城組 had a massive jump in scope after the very comfortably ambient Ecophony Rinne, with this soundtrack taking much more influence from gamelan, electronic music, and minimalism. It's incredibly ambitious, and it often hits its mark, especially when it's in full minimalism mode, but some of the attempts at regional styles fall a bit flat. The instrumentation can seem a bit too synthetic, and being that it's a score some tracks are not engaging at all, and when the minimalist style is brought into the gamelan or the electronic it can seem like it's being used as a crutch rather than a legitimate musical style. It's got issues, and it's too long, but it's a sprawling, epic journey of a score.

3.0-

Iva Bittová & Vladimír Václavek - Bílé Inferno (1997)
>avant-folk, progressive folk

Like a folky bag of tricks. Václavek's guitar work provides the grounded folky base for Bittová, her voice, and her various instruments to go nuts over, and the two have some of the best musical chemistry ever put to record. Their styles are both perfectly in sync with each other, as are their sounds and their general free-flowing attitude. The sprawling nature of this 77-minute long album can be a bit too much to bear, and Bittová's vocal acrobatics can definitely grate on the nerves, but it's a damn good album.

White Uploader & emamouse - 2,000 Babies (2016)
>sound poetry, glitch

A disappointing collaboration between two artists I know can do better. emamouse provides vocals for White Uploader to cut up and manipulate, and while the production is impressive on White Uploader's part, the execution is pretty terrible, doing little more than repeating certain phrases spoken by emamouse, occasionally to the point of irritation. Can't say I'm a fan.

>drone, electroacoustic

Music for the drift. It's much fuller and busier than anything else Oliveros ever did, and this approach makes me like it a bit less than Accordion & Voice and Deep Listening, but it's still beautiful, beautiful music. The two pieces fit together beautifully, and every instrument and effect on both of these tracks intertwine perfectly. Also, the cover is immaculate.
