RONALDO..SOCER

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time. This community is so inclusive that even communists and fascists coexist!

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Skeleton Tree
It good, liked the style changeup towards more spoken-wordy stuff, the fact that the instrumentation takes a back seat on this thing is a big up, not that it is bad instrumentation by any means

The Field - From Here We Go Sublime
Great, simple, repetitive electronic music, just the kinda cup of tea I like when it comes to that kind of music

>a lot of the french pop I've heard
I wouldn't call most of that list French pop though. I think maybe Gainsbourg, but Françoise Hardy or Jacques Dutronc fit that description better. For example, Brassens does pretty austere and calm songs with his guitar accompanied by a bass, whereas Ferré is backed by orchestral arrangements and is very passionate. Dominique and Bashung are more recent and their is kinda rock with other influences. Chanson is really an umbrella term for stuff sung in French, rather than French pop. Also the lyrics are an important part in some, because they're really good. You might wanna look them up for the first three I listed.

>Aqua - Aquarium
oh FUCK yes
3.5-
>Brethren - Savage Inequalities
it was probably a bad idea to listen to this after aqua, huh.
Sonically, this is some beastly power electronics. The texture is great, the lo-fi sound is great, the details are great. I feel conflicted because the subject matter was so grueling and disgusting, but thats the point. This album made me feel uncomfortable like no other album has before, and I don't know if thats a good thing or a bad thing. Songs like Hail AIDS and Cold Slavery kinda saved this project for me, just because the noise was so good on it. Will I ever listen to this again? Outside of those two songs, I don't think I'm bad enough for this album. However, this album did blow my mind and make me audibly say "damn" a few times, so I guess it did the job it was intended to do, huh.
3.5--

>DJ Screw - June 27th
I really dig this screw tape. That 37 minute freestyle song is definitely up there with some of his best remixes. Also, only Screw could make a 12 minute shoutout song and it still be enjoyable.

>Amnesia Scanner - AS Truth
I thought the fusion of UK Bass and Industrial is a really interesting, unique sound I'd like to see expanded on, and I really enjoyed all the unique textures and sounds spliced throughout here, but wasn't super sold on the song format, nor did I think arranging the songs in a continuous order really served the album much. Could definitely see this being someone here's AOTY though, especially if they're more into bleeps than I.

>The Coup - Steal This Album
Probably one of my new favorite hip hop albums, honestly. If you're someone who finds themselves infatuated with "golden-era" rap then there's really no reason to pass this up. Sure, the skits are kind of dumb and dated, but that's probably the only part of this album I could possibly hate. The production, boom bap beats, and sampling all work so perfectly. The Del feature is also probably one of the best songs I've ever heard him on. It's political and conscious, but doesn't feel like it takes itself super seriously. Would highly rec.
8

>The Chameleons - Strange Times
I'm not always huge on post-punk/pop fusions, but these guys to it so flawlessly it's crazy. Their first three albums are all so consistently great it's crazy. This 3-album streak is up there with Can, The Mothers, and TVU for real. But I doubt anyone would really agree with me about that.
8

>CCCP - Affinità yadda yadda yadda
Only these guys' first and last albums are any good at all, but damn, what a huge divide. Seriously, the energy and general post-punk vibe here make this an obvious winner. Even if it is kind of same-y throughout, at least what it repeats is pretty incredible.
8

>King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Nonagon Infinity & Flying Microtonal Banana
Waitaminute, I'm supposed to not like this, right? Sorry, but I kinda do. I really enjoy the guitar tones, the rich, varied, deep instrumentals, and the amount of creative song structures. I could see getting tired of this band if I listened to more of them perhaps, but I really enjoyed the really fast-and-flowing nature of each album, though the latter was a bit more ham-fisted than the former.

>Injury Reserve - Floss
B A N G S. Seriously, the first five tracks from this album are incredible. Enjoyed much more than Live From the Dentist Office. Unfortunately, after track six this album REALLY dips in quality for me. A good release that makes great use of modern hip-hop cliches and techniques, but it is undeniably top-heavy.
6

>Seaside Lovers - Memories in Beach House
Okay I really expected to not like this but it was actually pretty decent. Biggest thing was that it was so 80s it hurt. It was like a vaporwave album played at normal speed. The really calm, lounge-y synths struck a chord with me, but a lot of the production choices otherwise here are super dated.
6

>Windy & Carl - Drawing of Sound
All together it forms something very pretty and cohesive, but I'm not sure how I feel about the mix of shoegaze and amibent styles. It's kind of beautiful when playing in the background, but all together it just forms a big, mushy, rainbow-colored mess that pretty much just adds up to long, drawn out pop pieces. I'm excited to see what else these guys have in store, but this wasn't for me.
5

>Why? - Alopecia
A lot of extremely catchy and interesting melodies, beats, etc. Everything happening instrumentally really kicks ass. The guy up front though really makes this album 2x as bad for me. I usually don't mind the whiny, emo voice timbre (see my scores for Brave Little Abacus and Snowing) but I feel like this wasn't quite that. His voice was much more low-energy, and switching constantly from a whiny, nasal indie pop voice to a whiny, nasal, rap really got old after a bit. If you really can look past terrible vocalists, I would say you should probably give this a shot, because even though I wasn't huge on this I think it at least deserves a chance.

Well, on the album cover you cant see whats below the girl so theres no way of knowing if minutemen was written under it or not :o
>>
Let me preface this by saying """sorry"""

Minutemen - Double Nickels On the Dime
>Punk Rock, Post-Punk

I'm not going to pretend I have experience in listening to punk, but I can see how this album was a milestone for punk. I'd say it's far off from even being called punk rock, besides its obvious impatience in wasting time with a single song. The guitar, drums, and bass don't try to bash you in the face, and do their work behind Mike Watt's speech and miffed sing-speaking. Good thing they do their work decently during the 43 songs, even if the 23rd guitar solo gets tiring

Lyrically, it's expansive but shallow if you dig anymore than surface level. I love albums that feel like an adventure through multiple genres/concepts/narratives, but this album is more of a sandbox of the dozens of ideas these young men had, saying "what if we made a song hinting at __{partially political topic}_____?" It's what makes me think that this album isn't meant to be a cohesive whole, but a big picture of what this framed in America the year it was released. There's another underlying feeling that perhaps I shouldn't listen to this entire album at once.

Another problem for me: not one memorable track. Variety is great, but too much and it cancels out all the unique features of the album with other unique features.

>Time for a fantastic analogy
If you decorate an entire house with those scratchy pictures that move when you look at them from different angles, it's cool for a little while but it would get disorienting. But if you sparingly and strategically place them randomly within the house, they are more likely to keep your intrigue in scratchy pictures that move.

I think this entire album is made of 4 houses of scratchy pictures that move, and also swear at you before swearing at themselves when you look at them.

3/10

If this was shorter, I'd definitely give it a higher rating for being less of a chore to go through. Will leave it in my library to see if it grows on me

Sweet Trip - Velocity Design Comfort
>IDM, Glitch Pop, Shoegaze

Tekka hits you like a fuckin brick to the face as an opener, before that brick blossoms into a brick flower in Dsco, a summer day joyride.
>Baby let's design new comfort / Spread the towel and bring out the lotion
>Girl now let's design each other / Close your eyes until the logic's gone
A great one-two opening statement.

Having only heard portions of this album on shuffle, it was a surprise to realize that this album quickly jumps between glitch and shoegaze. It was a bigger surprise that I haven't heard any album similar to this that I can remember aside from The Depreciation Guild. But even TDG don't outright play chiptune alongside their songs, they simply replace their drums and guitars with it. Genre influences vs Genre bridges.

We see more of it when Velocity breaks down techno into lounge music(!!), and Fruitcake & Cookies unveils the strums of an unpowered electric guitar(?) from sounds you'd expect from a noise album. Valerie Reyes' performance is childlike and tender, upholding the image of a naive robot creating sounds "so that I may feel human." Sept surges from midi bongos to organic traditional shoegaze, and Pro :Lov :Ad mirrors it with a robotic interpretation.

VDC does tend to meander and make unforeseen leaps with its song length and structure (International comes to mind), and is equally stubborn with its closures. Yet in the greater context of the album, it makes sense.

The closing three tracks are dreamy as dreamy gets, backing off from the glitchiness to get in some final words. That is, until Design 2: 3 slaps you (much like the opener) and shimmers itself away.

This is definitely going to grow on me, and I'm glad I finally put time aside to listen to it.

8/10

Yeah, you're right about it being way too long and at least initially fairly unmemorable. I had the exact same problems with it for the longest time.

However, returning to it much later, I've come to really enjoy it. The memorability situation has also been greatly improved

You also obviously missed "Corona", one of the all time best punk tunes
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOFOqOjJ9Wk

If you want I could go and give you a list of my favorite tracks off the album. I honestly have no idea if this would actually "work", but I could imagine that if you listened to them all individually, you'd agree that most of them are pretty great.

hey, don't be sorry dude. opinions are opinions. i agree minutemen is probably a dated album and there's a lot of random ideas packed into it, but that's kinda what makes it punk. also just look at the year it was released.

i get the criticism that no songs stick out, altho Corona is definitely an essential punk song. viet nam is good too.

I'm making an album with this guy, so I was going to listen to this eventually. Glad I got an excuse to do it now though. It was curious, oddly compelling, the absurd length kind of added to it if I'm honest. It sounds like I'm going insane. >Charles Mingus - Let My Children Hear Music

As someone who gave Black Saint and the Sinner Lady a 5/5, i'm REALLY surprised I didn't particularly like this. It's hard to describe why I didn't really like it, it was just pretty forgettable and didn't really meet the mark when it comes to my taste in jazz. I still respect it because "technically" it's good, and it wasn't bad I guess, just nothing great. Maybe i need to relisten to the Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, hopefully I don't need to drop the rating.

3/5

>My Little Airport - 在動物園散步才是正經事 (The OK Thing to Do on Sunday Afternoon Is to Toddle in the Zoo)

Also surprised I didn't like this, as I was recommended it by someone after other albums similar to it I liked. It was comfy, but I didn't particularly enjoy it instrumentally and her vocals were meh.

3/5

>CunninLynguists - Oneirology

This was good. The lyrics and themes were really good, but the beats were just decent. The rapping was hit or miss at times, but overall I enjoyed it. There weren't any songs that were too memorable to me, however.

My RYM Review:

I don't care how incredible this game is, this awful soundtrack nearly ruins it. I wondered if I was actually going to rate this as low as I did, but I decided that the fact this cliched, unoriginal, and shittily produced soundtrack went to one of the most well written and touching video games of all time is just offensive. And unlike some other dicks on this page I'm judging it as a SOUNDTRACK and not a standalone album.

Really, the thing people like about this soundtrack is the melodies. All five of them. Seriously, if you know what you're looking for you'll find leitmotif's strewn fucking everywhere, usually in ways that hijack whatever chord progression they're placed on. The culminating moment of the true pacifist run is accompanied by a track with something like four separate leitmotifs in sequence, and they all sound forced. Instrumentally, it sounds like the most difficult track in any DDR game, i.e power chords and chiptune synths. The fact that Toby Fox thought that ugly bullshit would work on the literal final moment of the game, the most emotionally affecting sequence I've ever experienced in an interactive piece, is just baffling. There are several moments that should be impactful, but I can FEEL that cheap production weighing it down, and that is inexcusable.

Yeah the melodies are occasionally catchy and pretty, but I can do that too. I've done it many times. The ability to write nice melodies is not unique to Toby Fox. The moral of the story is to hire a fucking competent composer next time.

To be more responsive though;

I kind of agree with you about "Hopes and Dreams". It's a clumsy track and is kind of disappointing as a final encounter theme.

I would point to the theme of the Asgore fight as something that should have been used in its place, desu. It captures the mood of the entire game phenomenally well.

I think you may be having a case of the "Post-elitist theoretical music blues" though. It is clumsy and amateurish in execution, but-

If you step back, the soundtrack is fun as heck. Its combat themes are top-notch (Undyne & Asgore in particular). Etc. etc. Is fun. I like it.

Question for RYM users, do you downrate albums after they sour on you from age? I leave my 5/5's up there as long as I can rationalize why I liked the albums in the first place.

if i listen to a thing and i like it more/less i change the rating to reflect that

>>
>>72272557
obviously all your ratings never reflect your all of your feelings at every given moment and it's annoying to adjust that shit all the time mostly why i quit rym back then i hate this
i'd do it like avant and leave them at the highest rating i'd have given them at any point in time even if i stop caring about them completely - because hey i've seen that this album's got the potential to feel that amazing and let others know, i mean sure every album does potentially but don't be a negative faggot
i made an entire chart with 10/10 albums i only listened to once but i cant find it atm, content's not important anyways but i mean to gauge replay value you have last.fm
feeling like you have to rationalize everything is just a meme among wannabe critics that needs to die

My friend recommended this to me bc I told him about Today is the Day... yeah.
I just don't dig power pop. I used to be into Weezer years ago, but it just doesn't bode well with me anymore. If I want angsty, edgy music, then I would just listen to TitD. Ugh.

I thought this was cool as fuck. I've read reviews about how scary and unsettling this is, and I'm not denying that it is. Most of this reminded me of Throbbing Gristle (obviously, since theyre both industrial.) I loved the sampling on here, the textures of the noises, the atmosphere it created.. really awesome.

John Coltrane - Black Pearls
>Hard Bop

One of those random moments in Coltrane’s early Prestige career captured and released way later. Recorded in 1958, this has this incredibly furious speed and bebopy feel to it. Trane seems obsessed with his sheets of sound approach, ripping through solos as quickly and ferociously as possible. It’s actually wild to hear someone play this fast, dude can really shred. Donald Byrd is terrific on the trumpet as well, and Art Taylor provides the group with a challenging pace - wish I could play any instrument that fast, especially the drums. The session itself isn’t anything too remarkable, with most of it feeling like a “hey look at how fast we can play” session. Impressive to hear these guys rip through tracks at incredible speed and it’s entertaining throughout. Basically just Coltrane with the old Miles Davis quintet so it’s solid. It just doesn’t stand out compared to many jazz albums I’ve heard, though “Sweet Sapphire Blues” feels super ahead of its time.

Guitar Wolf - Jet Generation (1999)
>garage punk, noise rock

Certainly holds up its reputation as the noisiest album ever recorded (I'm worried about the well-being of my headphones), but behind the layers of noise and grit it's a pretty standard garage punk album. I think Planet of the Wolves is a lot more memorable in terms of hooks and in terms of pure energy, and that only hides behind a smaller, less overbearing wall of noise. The wall of noise here seems more like a mask for some generic garage rock. It's performed with no pretentions and a shitload of conviction, and it's certainly enjoyable, but the songwriting is really damn weak.

2.5

Groupe de recherches musicales de l'O.R.T.F. performing Iannis Xenakis - GRM Works 1957-1962 (1970)
>electroacoustic, stochastic music

This is really cool considering when it was written and performed, but I can't help feeling that Xenakis has done much better, more substantial work. Nothing here amounts to much more than electronic noodling, and while it's all cool and well done, it can't sustain a 40-minute album. Still really interesting, but there's better Xenakis and better stochastic music.

The Pod bangs but you won't like it

Geogaddi is also really good, but I doubt you'll be huge on it.

You'll like Blueberry Boat even though it's bad

The Shins are very boring indie rock. They're coming to my local shitty music festival and I literally could not be less excited. I bet you'll feel the same way.

The only worthwhile ABBA release is their greatest hits. I doubt you'll like much else other than the big hits on Arrival but that's because they're the best ones.

I really like the first song on that Brave Little Abacus album, and I doubt you'll find much to like in it.

Zen Arcade is a toss-up. Either you'll love the shit out of it or it'll be the most forgettable thing you've ever heard. I'm most interested on your thoughts on that.

Listen to one of those first if you can.
>>
>>72274118
Oh shit, there's lots of great albums on there! Especially the electronic stuff, Lifeforms is awesome. Arcade Fire, D'Angelo, Of Montreal and Raekwon albums are great as well imo.

The title track on 93 Till Infinity also has what's potentially my favorite beat in hip-hop so that's cool too

Beach Boys - Holland
>Progressive Pop

This album kicks off with a killer cut in “Sail on Sailor” which feels like a blend of Beach Boys psych pop and weird Americana stuff. It sounds like it wouldn’t work all that well but it’s a gorgeous little track and definitely one of the best BB songs I’ve heard of this side of the 70s.

The rest of the album has a minimal, almost loungy feel which I dug quite a bit. Like many late Beach Boys albums, it’s missing a lot of the beautiful layered compositions Brian often created, but there’s a lot of touching moments on here imo. “Steamboat” has this slow burning, ambient-ish guitar solo that just ties the whole track together. There’s lots of slide guitar and harmonica, subtly blending in the low-key atmosphere. Even the three part “California Saga”, despite its corny spoken word moments, feels casual and homey. I actually love the nostalgic, childish feel on it (part of why I like the Beach Boys) and the California references only added to my enjoyment. Both “The Trader” and “Leaving This Town” are kinda bad though.

The bonus EP is bizarre as shit, I'm not quite sure how to feel about it. A clearly still unstable Brian tinkers with electronic music and Nicolas Collins-esque (yes, I made that comparison) spoken word shit. Weird look at his mindset at the time but maybe that’s just me.

Although streaky, it's still great... but I’m also a huge sucker for this band.

this is p cool, because it's plot twists: the show. it basically pulls the rug from under your feet every time it's getting to a resolution. afaik this kind of storytelling is pretty unique, basically it's guided by a concept of touching upon as many aspects, cliches of its superhero theme as possible and more while consistency and foreshadowing are dispensed with a lot of the time i.e. "it's a wild ride"
on the other hand: the art style is cookie cutter tho, the action scenes are just 'ok', coulda done more to appeal in this kinda arthouse way or as an actual action show there, and it's pretty hard to say anything revolutionary about capeshit i mean, i know watchmen, opn and kick ass and idk about actually trying to judge something on that level
also deconstruction anime is a meme

i don't feel like tracking down and rating everything i've ever heard. the appeal of rym for me is an ever evolving catalog of shit you've heard that you might forget otherwise. so, i only rate things i've heard after august of 2015 that i'm either hearing for the first time, or have forgotten entirely.

Angels of Light - Everything Is Good Here / Please Come Home
Didn't expect it to be as rock orientated as it was, pleasantly surprised in that regard, reminiscent of post-rock swans which is best swans fight me

Royal Trux - Accelerator
Why wouldn't I like this, is it because I hated Twin Infinitives, you know I can disagree with people right, I can like something by someone and dislike something by the same person right, I am a person, I am allowed to like things, the reason I don't like Twin Infinitives is because it's a total fucking mess, and not like an entertaining mess like, say, Philosophy of the World, but an unlistenable heap of shite, Accelerator, on the other hand is quite listenable
other than that it's pretty entertaining freakish rock, reminds me of a dirtier Beat Happening

Mothers - Weasels Ripped My Flesh
Good, It's a good Zappa album, weird but not Burnt Weeny weird... Good and also nice

Egor Letov et al. - [100 Days of Solitude]
[Eternal Spring] is a fucking masterpiece, great song, HUGE song. I dig the washed out aesthetic they have on this, although some of the melodies rub me up the wrong way

Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped
I kinda wanted to hate this, not gonna lie, I didn't though, it's another acceptable Sonic Youth, it felt like I was putting on a hat that I hadn't worn in a long time, not all of it is great but overall it's a positive experience

>The Wild, the Innocent, & The E Street Shuffle

Hey, this was unexpectedly nice. He sounds considerably more confident as a voice than on his debut. Yeah, it still kind of sounds more like a Van Morrison album, and his melodies aren't as sweet as Van's, but it's still a nice change of pace from the more typical Springsteen sound. Say what you will about how the songs aren't interesting, but they are at least experctly crafted. PLUS there's a nice variety of sounds from track to track. He sounds totally competent as a songwriter throughout, but he never quite reaches particularly high heights.

6.5/10

>Born to Run

Ok, this one kind of sucks, overall. I like Springsteen, but only the good songs here are worthwhile. Like, a lot of this wouldn't even be good to put on at a 4th of July party, which should be his thing. The title track is really great, of course. It's a huge step forward in the creation of his sound. It's loud, maximalistic, and importantly feels like a full realization of his vision. The thing is, about half the songs here are just lesser versions of this same exact formula. It really is pretty one-note, overall, and it only works when it feels magical. This is just my interpretation of the sound--that it feels like you've won something. I've always found "Thunder Road" overrated, but it's still one of the better tracks here. The last track is kind of interesting. Ok, half of these would work at a 4th of July party.
