The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Original Silence - The First Original Silence.

A great lineup performing noise-wank for an hour live. Jokes aside, all the musicians on this have some amazing albums, and all have noise tendencies, so it seems this was their chance to go hard on these tendencies together. Plenty of interesting textures and chaotic moments, many of which resembled passages in songs by Sonic Youth and Fire (not surprisingly). At times it reminded me of the more chaotic moments from Ground Zero's discography. That said, I can't say I really loved the concept. I love it when this chaos is used in the context of an amazing song, but in this case it was pretty tiring. 5

rym review below

>Boris - Flood

"Flood 2" is amazing (the album as a whole clicked during this song at 10:25ish). Someone compared it to a slowed down version of Fishman's "Daydream", one of my favorite tracks of all time, and the comparison is pretty accurate. I love the melancholic emotion of that track and this one. "Flood 3" was also pretty good, the grand droning guitars, especially towards the end, made me smile. However the 1st and 4th tracks were pretty boring honestly.

I really appreciate this album but I can't deny that, when listened to on it's own with your undivided attention, it can be a little slow. I think Flood is really good for creating atmospheres for situations/ moods/ settings you're in, but when you're just sitting at your computer listening to it while not doing much else, it can be a little too repetitive.

I would not be surprised if I enjoyed this more and more with further relistens (as of this review it's my 2nd time hearing it, the first time I gave it a 2/5). Drone albums like this usually require a lot of endurance, but when they click, they can be amazing.

Whitney - Light Upon the Lake
>Indie Rock

I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this as much as I did honestly. It’s cozy indie rock with a nostalgic 70s feel. Nothing incredibly original as a result but it’s very cozy and flows great from front to back. There’s a little jazzy, loungy feel all over this that I quite liked. I don’t know what else to say other than it was tight - I need to revisit this because I can see it growing on me.

3.5

Suga Free - Street Gospel
>G-Funk, West Coast Hip-Hop

Dre gets all the fame and attention for inventing g-funk but DJ Quik (and Too $hort but that’s beside the point) started a very similar style at around time. The main difference is Dre’s beats tend to be low and heavy, with a tendency to draw in hardcore rappers. Quik’s beats are much lighter and suaver, with the bass sitting quieter (is that what it is?) in the mix. They sound like they should be crafted for a fly summertime pool party, with the samples giving the music a more sophisticated air. He produces this album in full and the beats kind of follow his typical pattern. He even manages to make chimes, flutes and cowbells sound amazing which is something I never expect.

Suga Free himself isn’t anything too special, Quik is the real star of the show, with those smooth beats. But I’ll say, Sugar Free is decently charismatic. His flow is less of the smooth Snoop/Warren G variety and more along the lines of west coast dudes like Spice 1 or MC Eiht (who ironically feuded with Quik). It’s scattered rather than concise, with his lines sounding a bit jarring at times. He still has a smooth side though.

So I can’t say I found myself paying attention to Free too much. He has this “heyheyI’mrappingsuperfassst!” Kinda thing he does on a few of the tracks and it’s semi obnoxious. Instead, I found myself pretty engrossed by Quik’s production which more than made up for Free.

Not great but it’s a prime example of LA hip-hop in the mid/late 90s.

Hello everyone, hope that you're having a good day today.

Davy Graham - Folk, Blues & Beyond... (1965) - The title describes the album perfectly. It is a unique blend of folk, acoustic blues and various other influences. It is said to have lots of influence on British folk and blues scene back then. He was an influence for many folk guitarists such as Bert Jansch or John Renbourn. Nearly all songs on this album are shorter than 3 minutes and I would say that it is the perfect lenghth. His guitar playing is really great, and his voice is nice too. 3.5

Robbie Basho - Zarthus (1974) - Another beautiful album of his. Full of eastern influences again, but the last track, nearly 20 minutes piano piece is really the best thing on it. Robbie Basho is probably my favourite out of all American Primitivists, there’s just something mystical about his music, it’s so full of soul, and moreover, I just really like his music as a concept, combining traditional music from different places with american folk music, and making it his own music, and I’m interested in all those places and music from them that he was. When I was listening to that last track, sun suddenly stopped hiding behind the clouds and started shining. I really recommend this one, especially for people who like american primitivsm, or folk music in general. 4.0

How many times do you listen to an album before rating it? How much about theory do you know? I suspect I need to, at least, learn a bit more about music theory to enjoy even better some genres I'm not familiar with.
Also do you listen to the album while doing another shit? I'm going to schedule my listening to the end of the day so I do all my work during daytime without any music then exclusively listen to an album in the end of the night. I feel that sometimes when I try something new my ears are already tired from day long background familiar music then it makes the new album sounds not that good.

The Marshmallow Kisses - I Wonder Why My Favorite Boy Leaves Me an EP
[2004]

Amazing moody 12 minutes ep. Songwriting is top notch and I recommend it to literally anyone who isn't afraid of their music being cute.

8.5
>>
>>72211347
I listen to most albums just once, there's too much of good music to spend lots of time just with one album, although sometimes I relisten some of them. I usually listen to music while browsing the internet or drawing, sometimes I listen to it while walking but I don't do that very often, I prefer to walk without music.
I don't think that you need to know music theory that much, although I'm sure that it would help with understanding the music, I think that you rather should just listen to lots of different music, different genres, different countries and so on. I guess that it is a bit like with painting, you don't need to know colour theory and history of painting to know that you like a painting, but it helps with understanding it, and sometimes enjoying it a bit more.
>>
>>72211379
No doubt, what I meant is that "modern classical" is a really wide term for all kinds of contemporary music, from stuff indulged in the past through various breakthroughs to unlistenable wank
So if you're interested do some research before deciding on what to pick up next, having a proper context for developments really helps judge what is worth your time and what you might want to look for elsewhere if you know what I mean
>>
>>72211373
kek, for some reason I really enjoy making things complicated.

>>72211447
This idea about theory comes from my experience in college. In the first years you say "cut this theory bullshit and lets just do practical or applied projects" then as time goes and you dedicate your time to really learn the theory then you start seeing the point in learning that and all the beauty.

>Boots for Dancing - The Undisco Kidds
Honestly pretty run of the mill dance-punk/post-punk. I didn't see anything new or interesting about this release compared to others I've heard from the genre. However, that doesn't at all mean this is a bad compilation! I did enjoy most of the songs on here, especially (Somewhere in the) South Pacific. This is an underrated comp (19 ratings on RYM!) that I'd still recommend.

Max Romeo & The Upsetters - War ina Babylon (1976)
>roots reggae

Blows my mind that this record isn't more popular, it seems like it should be really easily digestible to people whose only real knowledge of reggae is in the form of Bob Marley. This accessibility makes it lose some of the weight and sinew of some of Perry's best dub works, but Romeo's immaculately chill vocals are the cherry on top of this really chill album. The a-side is definitely the best side, probably just because of the monolithic "Chase the Devil", but the b-side is still a really nice, summery listen. Probably the best reggae primer out there.

3.0

Fugazi - The Argument (2001)
>post-hardcore, indie rock

I fail to get all the love for this album. I've often seen it compared to Leaves Turn Inside You, but the density and sheer grandioseness of that album just doesn't exist here. It's got much more influence from art rock and indie rock than Fugazi's previous work, but these additions (cello, electronics, a general softer atmosphere) make this album much less urgent and potent than anything they'd done prior. It's very controlled and calm, with most tracks sounding like softer intros to incredible tracks that never come. It definitely does achieve its goal of creating something more atmospheric, and there are some great tracks, but it's a bit bland and pompous.

2.5+

Jérôme Noetinger & Erik M - What a Wonderful World (2003)
>EAI, turntable music

Compositionally it may overutilize jump scares and sudden bursts of sound rather than emphasizing on subtletly, but I'll be damned if it isn't effective as hell. The sound design is really incredible, every wash of noise sounds perfectly fuzzy and beautiful, and genuinely suspenseful and noisy. Unsubtle and brash, but really cool.

90% of music merch is just t-shirts for really shitty rock bands. Would be a terrible idea unless you want a drawer full of Blink-182 and Def Leppard shirts you'll never wear.

The real question is why barely anyone makes music-related clothing that makes sense. Why can't I buy a Black Sabbath cardigan or some shit? How about a Godspeed-themed pancho? I know it sounds fucking stupid, but I'd love to have more music-related clothing, but am sick of band tees.

The only thing I can think of related to this is super high-end fashion companies like Undercover a couple years ago had this trend where they made music-related (Can, New Order, Dylan, and others) pieces that demanded fucking outrageous prices. Being able to find something between a $15 t-shirt and a $2000 jacket I don't think is that much to ask for.

That being said, this "She Brings the Rain" jacket is sick, and I would totally cop if it weren't $1000+.

most merch is bad tshirts and having CDs or any other music that isn't exclusive to that service is pointless because people can just buy the CDs they want or illegally download them for free instead of paying for some music they probably wont like.

if they managed to get cool stuff like pins, stickers, actually good clothing articles, posters and music accessories like guitar picks and maybe have a theme each month instead of just being discarded stuff tossed into a box like some of these blind box services do but that would drive up the price quite a bit.

>>72216723

Kind of a disappointing, mediocre weekend, but that’s how it goes sometimes, innit?

>The Mountain Goats - Tallahassee
Gotta say, this is probably my favorite output by these guys. It’s a bit inconsistent, sure, but it feels like it has all that great, passionate songwriting from “All Hail West Texas” without the really shotty recording quality. “No Children” is up there with “The Ballad of Chavo Gurerro” and “This Year” for their best songs. Lots of good shit on here, and this one is unfortunately probably a bit overlooked in comparison to their other stuff that surrounds it. Very good indie folk album.
7

>Atomsmasher – s/t
“Cybergrind” goes up there with dumb modern-sounding genres like “Nintendocore” that I’m pretty much guaranteed to hate immedietly. However, I really did enjoy a lot of the grindcore-inspired moments here. I’m not sure if I’m sold on the idea of glitchy noise-rock, but there’s a lot of decent stuff on here alright? Plenty of these songs are dying to be about half the length they’re at (a 6-minute grindcore-inspired album is pretty much blasphemy) but I’d rec this for sure if you’re looking for something to push you out of your comfort zone and maybe even surprise you.

>They Might Be Giants – John Henry
Every previous TMBG each comes packaged with at least of the best pop songs written: Don’t Let’s Start, Ana Ng, Birdhouse in Your Soul, and I Palindrome I, respectively. The albums get increasingly worse after Lincoln, but most other than that have a few defining “great” songs and a lot of junk. John Henry is sort of the opposite to this. There’s no single “amazing” song, except for perhaps the closer “The End of the Tour”. Each song is pretty damn alright, but individually none of them really stand out on their own. This remains a fun, interesting pop album like every other TMBG output from this era, but I was disappointed to hear no individual mind-blowing tracks. If you really enjoy their early stuff and are looking for something more, you should definitely hear this. Otherwise, it’s totally skippable.
6

>The B-52’s – s/t
Okay, yeah, Rock Lobster is /pretty/ cool I guess, but man, Planet Claire is my shit. I love how long and drawn out the progression of the song is, and how it doesn’t even really come to fruition until the last 1/3 of the track. Something about it is just so satisfying and I can’t stop listening to this. The entire A-side, in fact, is pretty damn incredible for a New Wave album. However, the B-side doesn’t really have a good song at all, except for maybe “Lava”. A pretty good album in a genre I typically don’t care for, but it’s extremely topheavy.
6

>Bedhead – Transaction de Novo
For my money, Bedhead is consistently one of the most slightly-above-mediocre bands out their. Their slowcore indie stuff is pleasing, but never really reaches or does anything surprising or satisfying at all. It just kind of…there. I’m not really complaining because I still enjoyed this decently, but “More Than Ever” was the only track I’d really ever be motivated to hear again from this album. Really passible and bland, but good for what it is I suppose.

>Xiu Xiu - La forêt
Xiu Xiu REALLY rides that line between being one of my favorite bands, and just being “that one indie/experimental band that once made a lot of really good music”. Not much else demonstrates that better than La foret. There’s some alright tracks on here like “Muppet Face” and “Bog People” but otherwise this thing is probably one of Xiu Xiu’s most mediocre “good era” outputs. Nothing really comes together songwriting wise very often, and all of the really interesting combinations of synths/bells/percussion are really as present as they are earlier. I love these guys, but albums like this are consistently keeping me from calling them one of my favorites.
5

>Owen Pallett – Heartland
There’s some really fucking great compositions on here. In particular, “Midnight Directives”, “Lewis Takes Off His Shirt”, and “Tryst With Mephistopheles” have some really fantastic minimalist-inspired compositions. Pallett is clearly a good composer and could probably make some amazing modern classical. Unfortunately, Owen Pallett makes Indie Pop, and pushes a lot of these great compositions to the back of otherwise pretty mediocre songwriting, pop-wise. His voice does basically nothing for me, and reminds me of just about every other shitty indie group with a white dude fronting it. Unlike someone like Sufjan Stevens, where the songs are clearly composed to fit a pop style and are much more satisfying that way, Pallett consistently disappoints by pushing a lot of great music into the background to make room for very mediocre indie pop and “indie-folktronica” (barfs). I feel like a lot of these great compositions are really held back by framing them as indie pop.
5

>>
>>72219599

>David Lynch & Alan R. Splet – Eraserhead
Didjya wanna hear more clips from a movie that you’ve already seen. I really enjoyed the dimensions that were added to the atmosphere when the more ragtime/dixieland songs like the “Lady in the Radiator” song played, which gave off a really cool Caretaker-esque vibe. Otherwise, this was just a pretty empty album with sections directly cut out from the movie. Feels a bit lazy and uninspired, extremely dissimilar to the movie it’s from.
5

>The Allman Brothers Band – Brothers and Sisters
Ya know what? This is my fault. I keep putting southern rock/jam bands on my chart, thinking they’ll reach the level of stuff on “Eat a Peach”, but this genre just isn’t isn’t for me I guess, because I consistently find myself disappointed and bored with this music. “Jessica” is a pretty nice rock track, otherwise nearly everything else failed to do anything for me.
4

>Pet Shop Boys – Very
Gee, I guess synthpop just isn’t my thing at all. I didn’t really hate this, I just found myself really bothered by a lot of the synth timbres here, and the songwriting only really satisfied on “I Wouldn’t Normally Do This Kind of Thing”. Otherwise, I didn’t really enjoy another single song on this. I just couldn’t connect with this one at all, sorry.

Looking for an album or song that is the music equivalent of nerds (candy). Something with a lot of detailed small beats with a sunny and sweet mood.

It should sound like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xgFy5SWl1Y), but much more sugary and bright sounding.

point taken; i just feel like it's a really blunt and unnuanced question. also, if you factor career paths into it, shouldn't the question extend beyond the literal pay gap (which = the difference in pay for the same job) itself?

I was visiting family for Easter, but I'm back. While I was gone, I went to an antique mall and found a first pressing of The Doors' s/t in good condition for $20 so I'm pretty happy. Here's what I listened to on the drive:

>Fishmans-Long Season
I liked it a lot, but someone told me I had to rate it 2/10 in order to gain daily cred.

Favorites: The whole thing

1.0/5.0

>Bob Dylan- Blood On The Tracks (1975)

I can see why people call Dylan one of music's best lyricists. I was pretty much hooked from the very beginning at Tangled Up in Blue. Songs like Idiot Wind and Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts really had me captivated, and got hit with a right hook of emotions with Simple Twist of Fate and If You See Her, Say Hello. I'll be listening to more Dylan in the near future.

Favorites: All the songs mentioned + Simple Twist of Fate

4.5/5.0

>Faust- Faust (1971)

I had a hard time rating this one because I haven't heard anything like it before. The first two tracks were interesting enough, but the last song lost me. I give it what I give it now, but I will probably revisit it later.

Favorites: Why Don't You Eat Carrots?

3.0/5.0
>>
>>72220943
do minutemen next boi
>>
>>72220943
Man I haven't bumped to Dylan in a while. I should probably get on that.

I had the same reaction to Faust's s/t the first time. It's for sure a grower.

I'll be interested to hear your Giles Corey opinions.
>>
>>72221012
Sure thing, boi.
>>72221033
I feel like I need to listen to more krautrock and then revisit it and see how it compares.
>>
>>72221066
yeah faust was my first krautrock album and it was wtf for me too. but it was awesome. once i realized the intense jams on it, it clicked right away for me, and now i love it.

what other krautrock have you heard?
>>
>>72220036

Well, I've listened to a few albums, but haven't really broken through surface level on any of them. I've listened to (but plan on revisiting):
>Can-Future Days (Tago Mago is already on my chart)
>Neu!-s/t
>Kraftwerk- Autobahn

This just comes from a passing understanding of /mu/core krautrock.

>>
>>72221449
thats definitely a solid lineup for the basics. definitely consider checking out early kraftwerk, ege bamyasi and faust iv if you haven't already. also, consider Cluster, Tangerine Dream, and Popol Vuh for more ambient krautrock.

I'd say about 50/50 maybe. Half on merit, half on being pushed by marketing executives until they permeated popular culture.
