It's April!

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

caters almost directly to my love of strings in hip hop, and creates the happy sort of feeling i've always wanted out of SILY but never found. there are some forgettable tracks but the high points are utterly fantastic.

>Pavement- Slanted and Disenchanted (1992)

It has a really nice energy to it. It’s also very youthful and moody, but not in an angsty way. It’s like skateboarding in the evening at the beach. Good vibes all around. (Best part: The “sha-la-las” in Zurich is Stained <3)

Favs: Summer Babe (Winter Version), In A Mouth A Desert, Zurich is Stained, Loretta’s Scars, Here

The coolest thing about Donuts imo isn't just the music but the back story and the influence. His stuff with Slum Village/The Roots/Common is pretty tight but he's also helped usher in that whole wave of soul producers (imo) and it's one of my favorite styles. Kanye, Blu/Exile, Just Blaze, Apollo Brown and all them have a lot to owe to Dilla. Cool stuff, crazy to think he wrote most of that on his deathbed

>DNA - DNA on DNA
I've had my eye on this compilation for a while. Its the highest rated no wave for my friends on rym, and I thought A Taste of DNA was solid. But I couldn't help but be bored with this compilation. Theres a lot of cool noises and dreary atmospheres on this album, but no song seemed to grip me in particular. In a way, I could compare it to 1/2 Japanese's sound, but I feel like they did everything DNA is doing here better than they did. I still enjoyed this comp for the most part, it's essential no wave and definitely lives up to my expectations for the genres. I just wasn't too entertained, I guess. I'll give this a relisten in the future.

Joe Henderson - Inner Urge

Some 60's post bop. Took a couple of tracks for me to start really enjoying this thing, but El Barrio was probably one of the best jazz takes I've heard. The ballad, You Know I Care, was also great, it didn't feel at all like a come down at all energy-wise. McCoy Tyner's playing was excellent, I really should listen to more of his solo stuff. Those first couple of songs I didn't find as thrilling as a couple of the later ones, but they were still pretty good. A very solid jazz album. 7

I'll probably listen to kendrick now then have a look at some of the other memes on this chart

Maybe not though, because it sounds a LOT like Splazsh, just more watered down
>>
>>72152343
Most would either say Splazsh (my personal favorite) or RIP
>>
>>72152343
I personally love Ghettoville, but it's one of those albums that I would rarely recommend to anyone because I know it caters directly to my tastes only.
It's hard to describe why I like it so much, but it basically commits to its desolate post-human electronic music aesthetic so hard that it almost becomes something else akin to drone music. It's heavily repetitious to the point of absurdity, but I don't mind because it sounds great to me and fits the theme. Then the album slowly morphs into something really fucking weird almost vaporwave-y with the vocal samples.
I'm rambling at this point but the album fucking rules and I don't think anyone else gets it like I do.

>desolate post-human electronic music aesthetic

Oh

So it's because I don't like Autechre that I don't like that album

>>72152381
I think I'll go back to RIP, since it's been a year since I've heard it, then Splazsh. My dissapointment in AZD and Ghettoville contaminated my opinions
>>
>>72152477
I understand completely dude, but the middle part of the album sort of drags it down for me. It starts and ends really strong though. I haven't given it its fair share of listens because it really doesn't have a lot to bring me back to 60 minutes of weird stagnant beats.

>>72152541
RIP is very different from his other albums, and the one most people who aren't really into lo-fi house like the most
>>
>>72152357
I can't really pinpoint why I don't like Splazsh. Probably the lack of cohesion? It has one of his best songs ever (Hubble) And some of his absolute worst (Get Ohn, Let's Fly). It didnt have nearly as much of an impression on me as RIP or of course Ghettoville.
>>
>>72152598
I'm surprised you didn't mention Bubble Butts and Equations as among his worst because most people do (I love it though). Also I think maybe the reason I love Splazsh so much is the lack of cohesion, a song will just suddenly end and you're just immediately hit with another. It all flows together in an unconventional yet addictive way, it's hard to describe.
>>
>>72146782
Who are you and why do you pretend arcangel and bad bunny are worse than Plan b
>>
>>72152541
I mean I guess there are elements of Autechre there but the line between human and inhuman is much more grey on Ghettoville. Autechre is straight up inhuman while Ghettovile is post-human if that makes any sense at all.

>>72152584
I'm glad you can at least see where I'm coming from. You really should relisten to it. It's underwhelming at first for sure, but if you listen to it at like 2am when you're tired and let it hypnotize you and let it somehow engage you by being repetitive and mechanical but then slowly morph as I said before, it's something to behold. I think at face value if you look at the tracks individually they don't hold up, But the album itself is an experience.

>>72152681
Hell no dude that song bangs it could fit on Ghettoville
>>
wew untitled unmastered is better than DAMN wew

Fuck, this may be my least favorite Actress album so far :/
It lacks both the memorable beats and the atmosphere that all of his previous albums at least achieved on some level. The sampling also seems really lazy and random :(

Sad to hear that. I got real excited when the press release for it said this crazy shit "(the live show) will be a test frame for linking circuits using various forms of language — Midi globalized language, Lyrical language, Tikal Graffiti code and various other Synthesizer language — to create one intelligent musical instrument called AZD, if successful it will produce the first translucent, non-soluble communication sound pill synergized through impressionistic interpretations of technological equipment. This is the music vitamin of the Metropolis."

Guess it turned out to be a load of shite. I can respect your take on Ghettoville cause at least you can appreciate what it's trying to do. The beats themselves aren't nearly as fun or upbeat as Splaszh so it's hard to like.

That sort of bass is so overblown that it becomes percussive and it adds to every song. Andy Stott does that real well.

Damn okay, I'll get to those Symphonies eventually. Kinda burnt out on em at the moment, 9 is a bit much.

Donovan - Sunshine Superman
>Psychedelic Folk

Awesome folk release from the mid 60s. The whole thing has a very nice psych feel, with heavier tracks toward the end sounding kinda vaguely like Jefferson Airplane. The dude was able to switch between lighthearted, poppy cuts and heavier psych ones quite easily and abruptly without disrupting the flow of the album - which I definitely appreciated. Everything I’ve heard from the whole 60s psych movement is so dope, I need to keep exploring stuff like this. “Season of the Witch” and “The Trip” in particular are awesome cuts, definitely gonna be coming back to them.

4/5

Black Disco - Night Express
>Afro-Jazz

Tight jazz release from South Africa, with a very solemn, spiritual feel. There’s a definite groove to this, with the bass bouncing around all over the album (God, this guy’s good) and the flute (used way more than I was anticipating) adding a piercing, powerful sound on here. The piano/organ is played in typical spiritual jazz fashion, with pounding chords making the album feel mystical and spiritual. The drumming has a laid-back funk feel, which is one of my favorite sounds in all of music honestly, I can’t get enough of it now.

The album has a great mellow but powerful vibe that can’t emphasize enough, it’s just terrific. I kept waiting for some of these tracks to depart into straight up funk but I wasn’t too disappointed that it kept a consistent vibe. “Oh Happy Day” is probably the closest they get to funk and it’s likely my favorite as a result. There’s still that positivity all over this album that kept pulling me back in. Solid all throughout, no real duds on here.

Shout out to pom (wherever he is), no idea how you found this shit.

Built to Spill - There's Nothing Wrong With Love (1994)
>indie rock

Well Fish, you were pretty much right. Built to Spill's second album is filled with wonderful guitar work, but the wonderful songwriting of Martsch and co. seems nowhere near as developed as it will be on forthcoming albums. It lacks the delicate arrangements of Perfect From Now On and the sheer energy and conviction of the poppy Keep It Like a Secret, occupying an awkward, embyonic middle ground. Only Martsch's guitar skills seemed fully developed, as evidenced by the barely-there melodies and the pretty poor production. The guitar work does damn near carry this whole album, though, alternating between full-bodied soundscaping and dirty, raw riffing with ease, and while pretty much every other aspect of this band would improve, they certainly began to find their footing here. "Car" is a damn incredible song.

2.5+

灰野敬二 - I Said, This Is the Son of Nihilism (1995)
>experimental rock, noise rock

Nasty manga Grandpa fucks around with his guitar for an hour. Seems like a perfect synopsis for most Haino releases, but outside of Fushitsusha this might be my new favorite release by him. The hour-long track consists of nothing more than Haino's constantly shifting and mutilating guitar coupled with his ghostly vocals. The softer moments definitely drag a lot, but they're mostly necessary to create the dynamics that make this album what it is. There's whisper-thin quiet moments, balls to the wall loud moments, and while individually some sections might suffer, hearing the album ebb and flow is really interesting and satisfying. I suppose I should dig a bit deeper into ol' Keiji's discography.

Blanck Mass - World Eater (2017)
>electro-industrial, post-industrial

Fuck Buttons are a very unsubtle band, so it's not surprising to see that Power's industrial side project is incredibly blunt and forceful. There's definitely a lot to like about this, it's produced very well and some tracks ("The Rat") are downright exceptional, but for what it is a lot of it sounds safe and predictable. It's incredibly busy but it can't properly balance everything that's going on in any given track, and it's more traditional IDM moments completely eschew anything I like about this album's industrial sound to flatly rip-off Aphex Twin. Despite my complaints, quite a nice album, and probably the best-produced album I've heard all year.

Ground Zero - Revolutionary Pekinese Opera v1.28
V enthralling, it does such an excellent job of building it's own atmosphere that it's hard to pull yerself out of it. The samples used throughout are integrated flawlessly, the instrumental work is pointed and angry, the work is beautiful satire/sarcasm. Why did I sleep on this
4/5

The Nerves - The Nerves
pretty stock standard power pop ep, elevated by two stand out tracks and brought back down by two meandering tracks. hanging on the telephone still stands as a great little pop song
2.5/5

Mayo Thompson - Corky's Debt to his Father
I want to listen to this a hundred times more and I think it'll only grow in esteem - the production is understated and delicate, the voice is unexpectedly sexy despite sounding like a horse has kicked him in the throat. a few great tracks and a few slogs, but when it's great it's flawless. stand out of course is black legs
3/5

The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem - Come Fill Your Glass With Us
a stand out album as far as the clancy brothers studio work goes, the production is clear (enough for the music within), the running theme of the album is supported by each track and each song is sung passionately, with a sense of humour undercurrent or a ballad sung so sincerely that it can't be anything but severely affecting. the best clancy bros. studio album i've heard so far
4/5

The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem - Sing of the Sea / Isn't it Grand Boys / The Boys Won't Leave the Girls Alone
All decent albums, the vocal work throughout is excellent but the production is muddy which undercuts a lot of the pleasure, and while a lot of good tracks a lot of the standards are so standard that there's nothing to differentiate them apart from the Clancy's vocals. Also awful covers
2.5/5 across the board

Das EFX - Dead Serious
>East Coast Hip-Hop

The sheer amount of “iggity, iggity” ’s uttered on this is riggity riggity ridiculous, even for a hippity hippity hah-hah hop album from this diccity diccity decade. Yeah - but this pretty much epitomizes everything so unique about this whole era of hip-hop. The whole album feels like a posse cut, with the MCs trading off in this light-hearted, goofy style that was only really a thing for this decade. The beats are all repetitive and jazzy, with twangy bass and upbeat drum breaks. The MCs have this reggae twinged flow that seems so prominent in this era, with an almost sing-songy tone. It isn’t the whole raspy thing that Redman/Buckshot did though even though there’s some similarities.

It’s easy to make fun of and gets old after about 6 or 7 tracks but it’s honestly a style I never really get tired of. The big downside is none of these albums end up sounding remarkably unique and the group dynamic makes it hard to figure out which MC is which. I had a friend recently claim he wishes this sound were more present in modern hip-hop. I can see that some MCs tend to be a bit too serious at time and this happy-go-lucky style isn’t so prominent. While I can’t deny its originality, especially for the time, this sound ironically makes a lot of these albums sound quite similar. I like the versatility of modern hip-hop just fine thank you. This is tight but it’s very much a product of its time, however you take that.

Good shit.

Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.
>West Coast Hip-Hop

Most of the reviews I’ve read so far have painted this as a disappointment but I actually liked this quite a bit. The beats are mellower and more traditional than TPAB, which I think is a nice change of pace. It weirdly feels more like Section.80, which is what make me a Kendrick fan in the first place. Though, there’s a different atmosphere on here, with more the beats being a bit heavier and the political talk being a bit harsher. The beats aren’t as fleshed out and impressive as on his other albums but I still liked them. “LOVE” and “LOYALTY” are particularly bad offenders on here, with corny pop hooks and kind of meandering lyrics. Pretty much everything else on here is great, just don’t go into this expecting another TPAB or GKMC. Which should be expected, people complain about this every time like they’re confused why he’s suddenly changed his style?

I need to give this more spins b/c my opinions about Kendrick tend to change a bit more over time than an average artist. I loved it so far but I’m definitely biased, being a pretty huge fan of everything he’s put out so far. Not gonna lie, I think I’ve reached that point where he could put out garbage and I’d at least listen to it a decent amount. So keep that in mind I guess.

I’ll try to write a better review at some point.

Regarding new Kendrick, I really liked the slower songs. Lust especially. The Bono appearance was ultra-underwhelming and this is U2 we're talking about lol. They have a hard on for bombast arena rock and that's all they do?

Maybe that's a good thing though.

Humble is the most annoying track. The beat is ultra boring and his monotone rapping makes me want to shoot myself.

Kendrick's rapid rapping is annoying as shit as well. All I can hear is him trying to catch up with the beat. Just rap normally.

Him singing on Yah is unnecessary. We already have people dickriding Drake for doing the same exact shit. Stop. It's just not good.

Basically, first half varies from it sucks to meh. Second half is much better. 6-/10 is reasonable.

Lots of good music today.

Frank Zappa - The Grand Wazoo
>Jazz-Fusion

I’m not too into jazz-rock but Zappa pulls off this style so well. The orchestration on here is something else, with spacey synths meshing well with wanky trombone and fusion guitar. The xylophone here is nice too, I think it adds a nice mellow touch to a fairly chaotic listen. As a whole, it’s pretty bombastic and over the top, with a wild big band feel. Again not something I’m into but Zappa manages to make this style sound surprisingly entertaining and approachable.

The 2nd half in particular is fantastic. “Cletus Awreetus-Awrightus” has an awesome horn riff, some jammy piano and a fantastic choir section that randomly pops in for no apparent reason. Zappa manages to pack so much damn music into this track, it’s actually quite impressive. The short length might actually make it the standout because Zappa gives you just enough time to get these motifs and ideas stuck in your head before he moves onto the next. Shockingly effective.

The rockier “Eat That Question” works well because the organ has that shimmering, funky sound that I can’t praise enough. It turns the song from a wandering prog piece into jazz, with something seemingly so simple. Oh and the drumming is all over the damn place. It wanders a little more than I’d like and it feels too purposefully complex but it’s still approachable and impressive.

“Blessed Relief” has this shiny piano riff and a low-key Spanish guitar that make it one of the most beautiful Zappa/Mothers songs I’ve heard. It’s relaxing without diving into anything too smooth or corny which reminds me a lot of the Gil Scott-Heron I’ve heard in the past. Hits that same middle ground quite nicely.

An impressive showing of Zappa’s compositional skills, without all the eccentric stuff to distract from the seriousness of his musicianship. One of the most focused Zappa albums I’ve heard and probably one of my favorites.

You described it probably better than I could. A really simple reason this guy is one of my favorites. Great review.

Also, did you expect to talk about Zappa ITT and escape without a rec?

Nah, son.

I would argue The Grand Wazoo is the worst of this era in the Mothers', though still really good. Over-Nite Sensation is in the same vain as Grand Wazoo, though maybe a little less consistent. One Size Fits All, the last REAL Mothers album is imo one of Zappas best, being pretty damn similar to Wazoo.

Also, I'm pretty positive if you enjoy this era of Zappa, Roxy & Elsewhere will blow your fucking balls off. I remember the first time I heard it I had one of those "Why did no one tell me this was THAT good??" moments.
>>
So this is a pretty solid album. A PR rapper tries to mesh in a shit ton of trad genres in the record and the beats actually sound sweet. Didn't think I will listen to a Puerto Rican dude rap over some throat singing.

uhhhh...

You /might/ like Apostraphe, who knows, but it's a mix of Comedy/Jazz Rock, and kind of the beginning of what I consider to be the worst era of Zappa's music.

I would strongly suggest starting with these three (seriously):
>Freak Out
If you enjoy this one, move on to his early experimental Mothers works like Absolutely Free, WOIIFTM, Lumpy Gravy, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, and Uncle Meat

>Hot Rats
If you like this, move on to his Jazz Fusion stuff like Roxy & Elsewhere, Waka/Jawaka, and One Size Fits All

>Apostrophe
If you like this comedy rock style, you might also dig Joe's Garage, Sheik Yerbouti, and You Are What You Is. Most well-known Zappa stuff, and most disliked 'round these parts, so tread carefully.

Zappa isn't easy to dive into, but knowing which era of his you like/don't like can save you a lot of time so you don't waste twenty+ hours on comedy rock you don't really like.

>>72158625
No problem, I'm not trying to baby you, I'm just trying to make a pretty unaccessible discography a little easier to get into since you seem interested. Little House I Used to Live In is a super underrated Zappa track, Burnt Weenie Sandwich bangs.

idk it was pretty good. my favourite parts were honestly the more noise based intro and outro, the meat of the album was upbeat noise rock that i would have been insanely into if i had heard this when i was fifteen maybe (i was into this kind of sound then thats not an insult). as it stands it was pretty inoffensive but mostly unengaging. i saw a comment somewhere that compared it to itchy and scratchy and i don't know why but that feels apt.

>kazumoto endo - while you were out
i thought i'd been thrown in the deep end until i realized just how rhythmic fun and almost funky this album can get. it's decidedly harsh at places but never does it just hit you with a wall of noise, it's all structured and layered, with the odd pop sample popping in and out to show that endo is really having fun with it. it's irreverent but god damned good.

>kevin drumm - sheer hellish miasma
well it's definitely that - the two pieces bookending the bulk of the album are short, soft and completely unlike what is contained within. it overwhelms you but not in a strictly punishing sense, it's a kick to the chest alright but it still manages to be layered in a few ways - there's a nice drone overlaying the mess beneath throughout the inferno. in the end tho i can't really find anything to gush over in this album. it's decent. it's fine. i might listen to it again, i probably won't.

what next???

>Sonic Youth- Daydream Nation (1988)

I really like all of the long instrumental improvisations towards the ends of the longer songs. Total Trash comes to mind when thinking about this kind of thing. Also the really tight drumming on songs like Teen Age Riot and Rain King. That being said, I don’t think I’ll be listening to this all that often. Still good, though.

Favs: Teen Age Riot, The Sprawl, ‘Cross the Breeze, Total Trash, Candle, Eliminator, Jr.

3.5/5.0

>The Dismemberment Plan- Emergency & I (1999)

This is some good shit, mane. The lyrics are compelling, and the music maintains a constant tone throughout the album, but varies enough between songs to keep it fresh and entertaining. My only criticism is that “8 1/2 Minutes” isn’t 8 minutes and 30 seconds long.

Favs: What Do You Want Me to Say?, The Jitters, You Are Invited, The City

4.0/5.0

What do you think of the young pope? I gave up on it after the 2nd ep
>>
>>72167781
Only seen the first two episodes, i gotta say its not really making me want to continue watching with all the dumb things the pope is doing but i do enjoy most of it, especially the soundtrack and some of the other secondary characters. I have no idea what theyre going for with this show but im a little bit intrigued. I love art heavily related to religion (the trees community, even oxen, herzog the book, la dolce vita) so im keen on continuing it. Plus i also really hate leaving shows half watched (unless i really dont like them)
>>
>>72167961
Yeah it's not bad, there are some good bits but it was quite slow and I just wasn't invested enough in the characters, like you I couldn't see where it was going but i didn't care enough to find out. Tell me if it s worthwhile

If you want extremely knowledgable but kinda generic opinions, go with Diction. Everything outside of a particular style is automatically like a 2 for him afaict but he knows his shit.

If you want niche/obscure (mostly Southern) stuff, check out Flamboyant4life96 and KingChile96. On the flip side, anything too mainstream or overhyped tends to get shit on my them.

If you want rambling but cool lists, try GSP66

Etat Brut - Géométrie d'un assassinat
[1982]

Industrial, ambient, electronic. That's the three words that pop up if I think about this record. Yes, it's somewhat ambient, but it doesn't really want to create a soundscape or an atmosphere; the sounds are just there to exist and have to be taken face value. Don't really know what to make of this record but it was a nice listen.

6.5

This chart is just KILLER so far.
>Little Kid - Logic Songs
(I took notes on this, but accidentally deleted them, so bear with my review based on what I remember off of one listen)
I loved this release. It's lofi and cozy as hell. Little Kids voice reminds me of Daniel Johnston's, and the lyrics are so depressive and sorrowful. But what really clicks with me are the details in every song. The little pieces of piano that pop up on most of the tracks, the fuzzy guitars, the little droning instruments, the beeping-type noises, the train samples. Nothing but love.
4.0+
>Sun City Girls - Torch of the Mystics
There's some absolutely rocking guitar playing on here, and thats obvious at the end of the first song. Sun City Girls seem to be a pretty mysterious group, and it shows on this release. There's a lot of genre bending on here: from surfy songs to psychedelic folk songs (which are my favorite songs on the record) This album rocks from front to back.

post punk revival definitely has a more modern "indie" (just means alt rock, really) sound than anyone who basically just copies Joy Division.
