It's April!
The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

The Flying Luttenbachers - Revenge (1996)
>noise rock
There are no pretenses about structure here, this is a balls to the wall noise rock assault through and through. While it's all cool, what I love about Destroy All Music is the jazz-like structure to every track on it. While the Luttenbachers can pull that sound off perfectly, this assault of noise sound isn't done with nearly as much tact or finesse. The metal influences are also pretty ill-informed, but all in all it's an enjoyable burst of pigfuck.
2.5+
John McLaughlin - Extrapolation (1969)
>post-bop
About as far removed from Mahavishnu as McLaughlin ever gets. There are only shades of fusion on here, McLaughlin and co. instead deciding to play in a very dream-like style of post-bop, anchored by McLaughlin's guitar work and Surman's stellar work on the sax. A bit too traditional especially considering what we all know McLaughlin can do, but really nice and pleasant, and a nice change of pace in his discography.
3.0-
Anwar Sadat - Ersatz Living (2017)
>post-punk, electro-industrial
PHM-era Nine Inch Nails revived for 2017 without the songwriting and production skills of Reznor, and it's about as shit as that sounds. The instrumentals are alright, it's got a cool, mechanical sound, but the songwriting is stale and derivative, and the vocals and lyrics are fucking laughable. Even if the band's getting into a good groove the vocalist immediately comes and ruins it with the most generic edgy shit on Earth. There's potential, it's just definitely not realized here.

I have never been here before but I'm stuck on an Amtrak for an hour so I'll review the last few albums I've heard!
>Pharoah Sanders - Black Unity
A pretty groovy spiritual jazz album that starts strong and loses just about all of its steam when you realize it's 37 minutes of improvising over the same track. Some versions have it split down the middle for Side A/B but it's one session. That's like the dictionary definition of meandering. Regardless, it contains some solid playing from Sanders and Joe Bonner on piano.
> 3 Stars
> Sun Ra - Languidity
I don't even know where to start. I ended up hearing this album out of order, which I don't think affects a jazz album too much except for the fact that it kept me from listening to the absolute fucking masterstroke "That's How I Feel" until the end of the session.
This is an atypical Sun Ra album and that actually means it's somewhat safe for the spiritual avant-garde scene, but this is without a doubt the first album in the genre that really made me feel like I was astral traveling. Auditory equivalent of a dimly lit room full of smoke.

>Nebraska
From what I can remember this is one of my favorite Springsteen albums. Not necessarily for particular songs but the overall feeling it conveys. Supposedly it's inspired by Suicide, but I can't say he nailed that atmosphere, maybe compared to earlier albums. More fittingly, it feels like music written alone in a bedroom, played alone in a bedroom, and meant to be listened to alone in a bedroom.
Re-listening, what I appreciate most is how it does away with any cheese that may have been present in the production style on earlier albums, but still retains sincerity and vulnerability. He decides he doesn't need it here, anyway. He sounds more like Woody Guthrie than typical Springsteen on a lot of the tracks--most notably the title track, "Mansion on the Hill", and "Highway Patrolman". And damn, what an incredibly well-written song the latter is--almost makes the comparisons to Dylan understandable. And of course, "Atlantic City" is one of his best, most honest and heartfelt performances. It seems at first like just a catchy Bruce Springsteen melody, but the feeling of desperation just pairs the music and lyrics together so well. It seems to be understood that his general appeal to a lot of people is this unpretentious (often working-class) relatability, and it's on full display here.
A few of the songs are skippable, and the last half isn't as good as the first, with "Open All Night" being an obvious dud. It's like some of the weaker songs were written with the full band in mind, and they feel lacking in this context.

Spiral Walls!
I'm back
>Sentimentos
Proof that Pascal Comelade's best work comes from some sort of minimalist and contextual genius. The formula is exactly the same, but the "magic" isn't there.
>We Are Him
Monolithic gothic psych-folk. I kind of like Swastikas for Noddy so this gets a positive score.
>By The Throat
The emotional delivery came off as melodramatic and cheesy. At least it was tastefully short.
>Weird french title (it's Raein)
Possibly the softest screamo album I've listened to, and that's a good thing. It's like an incredibly angsty fever dream.
>The Stalker
Nothing too special, but SV seems to have a particular aesthetic niche that they fulfill nicely in their work. Enjoyable
>Technicolor
Part of the allure of "Di Go Pop" was the combination of warped, velvet-esque, mysterious melodies with a blown out, sparse, and interesting sound palette. Here the former seems to have been neglected. Now this sounds like washed out 90's indie pop.
>Oktophonie
In layman's terms: This shit is fucking rad. The whole dialogue between Micheal and Lucifer got a bit on the nose. Maybe it's cooler when you know German or something.
>Corpus
Industrial punk combines with popular alternative music. It's an ugly accident
>A Hairshirt of Purpose
This album seems to focus more on slower, more drawn out songs. Quite a contrast from it's excitable brother (Dripping). I for one missed the inventive guitar work, song structures, and vocal performances.
>Watertown
It's very solid. It's also very boring.
>Der Jahreslauf
I'm not going to lie, I feel as if I understand this less than Oktophonie. I'm going to stop there because I cannot critique classical music.
>My Pal
Every facet of this song bleeds desperation and defeat. I feel this right now i'm not going to lie.
Okay i'm done embarrassing myself. I might give my two cents on the rest later. If you want me to expand on anything else on the chart, let me know.

The Necks - Vertigo
>Free Jazz, Drone
A darker tone tone than Unfold, utilizing many percussive instruments, piano, and bass. Grabs my attention, but doesn't lead it anywhere particularly interesting. Might be just the mood I was in listening to this, but I think there are better choices for free jazz than this-- be it from the Necks' own discography or any other artist.
6/10
Rupert Clervaux & Beatrice Dillon - Studies I-XVII for Samplers and Percussion
>Minimalism, Contemporary
Mixture of live percussion performance, and sampled drums put through filters, that play off each other in a call-response fashion. Ranging from bongos, brushes used on a glockenspiel, a distant snare drum, vibraslap, agogo, cowbell, cymbal and hand cymbal scrapes, someone shaking a chair(?), Not one track goes above 3 minutes in length. Draws from various genres appear in groups, leaving each track ambiguous at best, desultory at worst.
As a percussionist, this was a strange listen, since I'd hear this wide array of different noises all the time during practice. It's sort of like this album takes the assortment of meaningless noises other percussionists would make during their downtime, and arranges it using a computer as a framework.
A curiosity, but feels like it could have been much more.

I have a fantasy that Nicki Minaj and I are on a plane together and it crashes. We both end up on a deserted island, just us two. Nicki, being a starlet, knows nothing of how to survive, while my hours lurking in the woods has taught me how to make fires and live somewhat off the land. We'd spend years together on this island. She would come to rely on me for survival. Eventually, she'd fall for me and we'd make passionate love for hours on end. After a few years of fucking each other, some debris would wash ashore allowing us to finish the construction of a raft, a la Castaway.
During the voyage home, Nicki and I would get separated, but we'd both make it home. Her, picked up by a luxury cruise, me by a commercial grade fishing boat. We'd both think that the other had died. I would make it home a month or so later, while she was taken home immediately, being Nicki Minaj washed up on a cruise.
Upon returning home, I turn on the television and see her on Letterman doing an interview about her time on the island. I watch the whole thing from beginning to end, and at no point am I mentioned. She's trying to tell everyone that she survived alone for half a decade. Enraged, I take my savings and go on a trip to America. I find my way past Nicki's security and break into her room while she's alone.
Standing behind her, I cock my gun to get her attention. I ask her how she could so such a thing and she begins deeply sobbing. Barely able to talk through the enormous gasps for air, she begs for her life. At this point, we fuck. The greatest fuck we've ever had. The most passionate, beautiful fuck that ever fucked. Then, after I come a few times, I ask to hotdog her ass. Then, while I'm doing that one last time, I grab a vase off a nearby table and cave her fucking skull in.

Sundar Popo - Come Dance With the Champ
>Chutney
Chutney is some really bizarre music - it takes elements of Hindustani music, Trinidadian music and some western popular music to make something very unique. The actual songwriting style ranges from a very Caribbean style to a more traditional Indian one to something more akin to Western pop music, which means this is not lacking in terms of diversity. Some tracks have a powerful horn section, some are funky guitar jams, and there's a few weird ones with cheap synthesizers. There's a whole load of fun to be had here, and the broken English lyrics give it some weird charm. The sad ballads end up coming across as being more silly than anything as a result, but it's not that big of a deal.
Sundar Popo himself is honestly probably my least favorite part of this whole thing, he's not bad at all and is in fact quite fun, but he doesn't change up his style of singing which often clashes with the rest of the music. I also think the more stripped down songs aren't as great as the ones with the more overblown instrumentals, and the longer tracks lose their groove by the end, but overall this is just a really fun (and weird!) release.
3.5
PaŠ±Š±oŃa Š„o [Rabbota Ho] - PeŠæeŃŠøŃŠøŃ Š±eŠ· OpŠŗecŃpa
>Experimental Rock
This exists in some odd space between Kino, Auktyon and Hronop - it's your standard issue Soviet new wave-y melodic abstract art-rock. It's not bad, but it's not as mindblowingly strange as I was anticipating from what I've heard of it. I'm pretty sure the only reason this band gets so much contemporary attention is because it introduced the style to the region, which rubbed off on more interesting people. Most Ukrainian artists from this scene had their own very unique sound, so I'm a bit disappointed in this. But this might be worth a listen if you happen to like the aforementioned artists.

>Jorge Ben - A TƔbua de Esmeralda
My first proper exposure to Jorge. I don't know if it's because I've heard a lot of his music in passing before but it sounds like generic Brazilian music. I've not really listened to enough music from Brazil to make a statement like that but I can't think of a better way to put it. It's nice but it's kinda just there, I'd put it on in the background while drinking a few beers but I'm not feeling any profound beauty, it's just too laid back. I think I could have enjoyed it a lot if there was just something more to it, more of a sense of rhythm, a bit more passion, but the little things like the background voices and strings add enough to make it fun. 3+/5

>tim hecker - love streams
i really really like some of tim hecker's stuff (radio amor, ravedeath) but love streams was bad. the vocals added nothing to the tracks and i almost felt like they would have been better without them. reminded me a lot of OPN at points but much worse. this is so disappointing when i think of all the good stuff he's released. like, what is even happening on "violent monumental I"? was he just like 'got all these vocal cuts, better use them all at once'? this frustrates me just because i know there's an intent behind it, but i really just don't get this release.
>best track: "obsidian counterpoint"
>buscabulla - buscabulla
i listened to the wrong ep (EP 2) so then i had to go back and listen to the actual thing, lol. i liked it better. she has a smooth voice very fitting to this type of music. it all feels very nicely and purposefully put together. the negative is that it also feels very familiar to me, like other songs and artists I have heard before. nonetheless, it is a pleasant listen (much better than EPII imo). this is why i liked "temporal", which i felt was a bit more unique than the other tracks (and a really good song in general!). i feel like the style just comes together really well on that track. the others are ok too, but a little too familiar for me to care too much about them
>best track: "temporal"

>six organs of admittance - dark noontide
i really liked the first track. this album has really good guitar playing. i like the atmosphere, but honestly i wasn't that into the more drone-y tracks like the title track and "regeneration." i don't like his voice that much, but that's more of a personal thing. to be fair, it does fit the music. the 7 minute "khidr and the fountain" is real good throughout and "a thousand birds" makes a good conclusion to the album. i don't have any serious complaints about the album, and it would probably benefit from a relisten. i liked this but i didn't love it
>best tracks: "spirits abandoned", "khidr and the fountain"
>talking heads - remain in light
i have heard 77 and fear of music and i don't remember really being crazy about either of them. i'm not sure why i never listened to remain in light, but damn, this is really good. y'all probably all listened to this already but i don't think i've really heard any album very similar to this one. i really like the intersecting vocal sections and the percusson. will probably go back and relisten/listen to other talking heads albums, liked this one a lot

Yeah, the only songs I like on that tape are the Intro and 1 Night. Everything else is pretty unforgettable. I get why people might like him but I can't get into him at all aside from a few singles
Hereās some shitty reviews (what's new?) cause Iāve been busy this week.
Pet Shop Boys - Actually
Not gonna lie, I might just not like this style. The synths arenāt quite as dated as something like Pleasure Principle but it doesnāt feel like anything too special. A few of the later tracks reminded me of Depeche Mode which was nice but nothing really stuck out in particular.
2.5/5
Willie Nelson - Phases and Stages
Not a big country fan but Willie is something else. Really melancholy vibe all throughout and the repetition of the āPhases and Stagesā theme throughout really hammers the point home. It should get annoying but he pulls it off pretty well. The songwriting on here is great as youād expect and Willieās voice is fantastic. For a breakup/concept album this is pretty cool, gonna have to revisit this and check out Red Headed Stranger.
3.5
Ornette Coleman - Dancing in Your Head
Thereās some weird bluesy groove that makes Ornetteās music so intriguing. Itās free jazz with an Eastern flair so itās completely off the wall. But at the same time, he manages to keep it funky and engaging, it almost sounds like he isnāt noodling around or playing free jazz on parts of this record. Itās the weirdest fucking experience, I donāt know how he does it. Reminds me a lot of the Naked Lunch score, such a cool sound. Kept me on edge but was weirdly catchy.

personally for me, i like the tape bc the production on it is just something fresh i havent heard before. the songs are infectiously catchy, and i can easily get lost in the fluffiness of most of the beats.
but i can easily understand why people dont like boat. hes not next level or anything, just rly fun, catchy music.

>Aaron Dilloway - Modern Jester
This album started out really strong, but fell off after Body Chaos. Before then, this offers some super interesting textures in terms of the noise on it. If it ended after Body Chaos, this would easily be a 3.5+ for me. But, I was honestly kind of bored with Look Over Your Shoulder onwards. This had potential, but fell off.

Hey dude you are reviewing. Some of us are too lazy even for that.
v/a - Gipsy Rhumba: The Original Rhythm of Gipsy Rhumba in Spain 1965-1974
>Rumba catalana, Rumba Flamenca
A short (~50 minutes) comp of an obscure Gypsy subculture in Spain that was influenced by developments in Latin America. I'm not very familiar with Spanish music unfortunately, but this seems to have a much more laid back and informal style than what I have heard. There's a lot of influence from popular music, with organs and bass often appearing besides the guitar and castanets.
It's fun and full of energy, but despite its relatively short runtime for a compilation of an entire scene, there's no much variation and the quality control is a bit lacking in the latter half. I also found myself wanting more 60s organs here; they work surprisingly well.
3.5
ŠoŠ»Š»eŠ¶cŠŗŠøŠ¹ aceccop [Kollezhskiy Asessor] - ŠoŠ»Š» Ac
>Experimental Rock
Kollezhskiy Assessor is /the/ Ukrainian rock band, with one of the biggest cult followings in the country as well as being one of the very first bands to form there AND being one of the people who kicked off the whole Ukrainian New Stage. They've been compared to Grazhdanskaya Oborona, Tuxedomoon, The Velvet Underground and Plastic People of the Universe. You could say I had big expectations coming into this, seeing as this is their first "real" statement despite having been formed for 8 years beforehand.
I'm struggling to compare this to anything. Wire is the best I can come up with. This is a very eclectic album, though you can definitely hear bits of influence from every artist I mentioned earlier in this review, but Kollezhskiy Assessor's sound is definitely their own. Some tracks are more in line with the likes of Gang of Four, with the angular riffs and almost danceable rhythm, but then there are tracks that bring to mind Television's more epic and climatic approach. This really goes off the deep end towards the end, with a weird jam track followed by what sounds an even more demented Bewlay Brothers.
Listen to this!

also does he sample the hl2 zombies on eat the rich? if not, it sounds eerily similar.
>That snarky reply currently up on the archive.
I mean the dude sounds like an asshole but is he really wrong? As of recent the archive has been extremely unreliable, and you have to kind of expect people to be angry if it rarely ever works anymore.
>>72132407
Adding on to this, though it might not be their fault the archive never works anymore, wouldn't it be more productive to post an update as to why the archive isn't working as opposed to making fun of someone who's angry that it doesn't work? Surely, the former would be possible if the latter were as well?
>>72132396
I'm not sure where any of the samples come from, that's something I'd really like to know though. I haven't really played hl2.

stoked you liked that. I know loads of stuff like it so lemme know if you want recs
>>72132506
I think it probably has to do with the fact that up until semi-recently the archive worked nearly perfectly for me, and now I'm lucky if I can find a single post before.
>the guy running the archive has no real obligation to do it, they could quit anytime with no consequence to them
I agree, but does this mean that people shouldn't question why it never works anymore? I do think that whoever runs the archive gets very little praise for doing so much without much reward, but I don't blame people for being angry about it either.
>Maybe they should rig it to save posts with DL links only instead of everything
I think people like hampus who regularly search their name to see who is cyberbullying them would hate this idea.
otherwise I have no objections to that, because that's what 90% of archive users use it for anyways.

The Del-Byzanteens - Lies to Live By
Wow this was incredibly boring. I could barely make it through the whole thing if I'm being honest. Almost no variation, no interesting textures or atmosphere; nothing I look for in an ambient album is present here, if you can even call this ambient (I don't). It's just lazily-written psychedelic folk hidden underneath "dreamy" lo-fi production. It's not good ambient, it's not good folk; it fails at being either. It's a shame someone with such a pretty voice and who is willing to experiment couldn't create something more worthwhile. I'll probably try out some of her other albums eventually, but this album has me hesitant for now.

Carter 2 is great
Kind of a disappointing last bout of albums, hopefully some better ones to come:
>DJ Screw - June 27th
Y'all already know I love this guy, but this has to be one of his most wishy-washy releases I've heard so far. His rendition of Da Streets Ain't Right is amazing, but is about 20 minutes too long imo. "The Freshest MC in the World" is a fantastic instrumental and "Rollerskates" is probably one of his most choice tunes, but nearly every other track on this doesn't quite hit as strongly as the obvious stand outs. Still incredibly enjoyable and highly recced for anyone who like his more popular stuff, but not as consistent as his better shit.
7
>Lolita Cuevas and Frantz Casseus - Haitian Folk Songs
A short, sweet collection of folk music from an area of the world I know virtually nothing about, but other than that it's nothing I'd seek out to hear again, as nothing much really stuck out to me from these really simple guitar arrangements.
7
>Karlheinz Stockhausen - Gesang der JĆ¼nglinge Ā· Kontakte
I'm not the biggest fan of Stockhausen's works, but I really enjoyed this album, especially the first track, and the entire B-side. To many it probably doesn't sound like much more than "a collection of weird sounds", but those sounds are at least cool as shit. The usage of what sounds like a children's choir/voices produces a really unique timbre, especially on the first track. Even if you weren't in love with Kontakte fĆ¼r elektronische KlƤnge, I would still highly recommend this.

1/4
>>72133905
>Thelonious Monk - Underground
I don't know much about Jazz Pianists, but I'd have to say Monk is up there as one of my favorites, especially with his extremely unique playing style and note choice. Here, he rarely demonstrates any of this, showing off some of the talent of saxophonist Charlie Rouse and vocalist Jon Hendricks (though the former much more than the latter) while Monk kicks it in the back. While I don't really mind this, I really wish he wasn't so subdued in comparison, as the featured musicians here don't really do much for me. The tracks where Monk does come out like "Raise Four" or "Thelonious" kick ass, but this really just made me want to listen to Brilliant Corners. Fucking ace album art though. Would for sure buy the vinyl of this if I found it cheap.
6
>Alex Mauer - Eat People 123
Filled with some of the most shorty, catchy melodies of many albums ever. However, something that annoys me with chiptune "8-bit music" is that the entire genre basicallly runs on a quirky facade that this is what ALL 8-bit music sounded like (but that's a rant for another time) and that after a very short time, the effect of the satisfying square waves used in this music really starts to wear off, especially if your album is over an hour. Lot to enjoy here, but don't be surprised if the style starts to bore you after the first half hour.
6
2/4
Kate Bush - The Dreaming (1982)
>art pop, progressive pop
I really wasn't too hopeful about this album just from listening to the first two tracks. Something about the instrumentation seemed a bit too synthetic, and the cabaret stylings of "There Goes a Tenner" got on my nerves. The album takes a big leap in quality with the intense "Pull Out the Pin", a fantastic display of Bush's talent as a singer and a producer. The autonomy that Bush has on this album is very obvious, as the sound is much darker and much more experimental than anything she's ever done. Most tracks are very collage-based in nature, with Bush assembling some of the most dark, manic sound collages to sing, yelp, and scream over. The vocal performance is a tour de force, Bush puts on a more controlled voice for the poppier songs, but the real highlights are when she completely lets loose and dominates a song with her powerful, theatric voice. She even manages to make donkey sounds intense and powerful on "Get Out of My House", my favorite track here. God, why did I take so long to listen to this?
3.0+
Bill Frisell - Before We Were Born (1989)
>avant-garde jazz, jazz-rock, jazz fusion
It's a damn good thing that Frisell's a great guitarist, because his compositions have no life or passion to them whatsoever. The thirteen-minute long centerpiece "Hard Plains Drifter" is the only real highlight of the album, it's structure is remiscent of prog rock epics and it's the only track where Frisell really does something with his guitar worth writing home about. The rest of the shorter tracks have some nice noodling on his part but every other instrument seems like it's trying way too hard to keep up. The production is really poor, it's very synthetic and '80s sounding, which is a huge killer for a jazz record. Very mediocre.
2.0
>>72133930
>John Cage / David Tudor - Indeterminacy
Really interesting. From what I understand, John Cage talks in one room telling several anecdotes (which by themselves are pretty entertaining), and David Tudor uses tapes, pianos, bells and whistles (literally) along with other assorted noise makers in a completely separate room. Both deaf and unaware to what the other is performing. It is a really creative and unique piece of art where the listener forms associations unconsciously between the spoken word stories and the background noises, but I can't help but feel that David Tudor's end happened to be extremely lacking instrumentally, only playing anything at all extremely empty. Because of this, there wasn't much that I as a listener could really hold on to and form associations with. I would really recommend this to anyone who is interested in indeterminant musical concepts, but otherwise you could probably pass on this.
5
>Todd Rundgren - Something / Anything?
Some really fantastic pop songs here, "I Saw the Light", "Hello It's Me", and "Couldn't I Just Tell You" in particular. However, it too greatly suffers from White-Album-Syndrome. Writing a full album of pop songs that are simple by nature is fucking hard. Writing twice as many in one go is fucking god-like and very few pop bands have ever gotten away with it. Saying "it should've been just a single album" is such a common complaint for many of these pop albums because it's fucking TRUE. Hell, even the white album has Revolution 9 near the end (one of their best songs) to spice it up, while this has nearly nothing of that caliber. Looking forward to hearing an album by this guy that's about 30 minutes shorter sometime in the future.

>The Incredible String Band - Wee Tam & The Big Huge
I'm not the biggest fan of The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, but I at least recognize it as a pretty decent folk album with loads of creative instrumentation and good songwriting. Here, these guys seem to have forgone more subtley complex pieces with things that seem more in-your-face, and varied, yet much less satisfying than on their previous album."Wee-Tam" has a few stand-out tracks like "The Half-Remarkable Question" or "Job's Tears", but The Big Huge on the other hand is extremely empty, only having really one song I enjoyed: "Maya". Maybe give this a shot if "Hangman" was that incredible to you, otherwise this is super skipable.
4
>Graham Lambkin / Jason Lescalleet - The Breadwinner
I can with like 90% confidence that this is one of the most forgettable albums I've ever heard. I seriously tried to remember what I had just listened to right after this album ended, and it was very hard for me. This lowercase stuff is in one ear and out the other with me. I don't really mind a lot of the concrete/electricacoustic stuff, I just usually hope it's stuff I can actually make out. It's sort of a personal issue I suppose, but this music has very little to offer to me, though I do find it very interesting.

ye, from what I've heard hounds of love seems to be a bit brighter and lusher.
Jack Rose - Luck in the Valley (2010)
>american primitivism
Wonderful final album for Rose. Makes a whole lot of sense that this came right after his album with The Black Twig Pickers, because it's in the same boot-stomping country-fried vein as that album, but it still brings in some of the dronier elements from his earlier solo career and his work with Pelt. Not quite as inventive or impressive as Kensington Blues, but a really modern day take on primitivism.
3.0-
Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson (1971)
>pop rock, singer/songwriter
In typical Nilsson fashion, he cycles between so many genres that he can't ground himself and pick one that really suits him. This album goes between loungy jazz pop, passionate baroque pop, intense psychedelic rock, silly calypso, and in doing this it feels very off-the-cuff and scattershot. Nilsson's talent clearly lies in the baroque pop and the psychedelic rock, because "Without You" and "Jump Into the Fire" are great tracks, but no other style really suits him. The range of his vocals on each style are impressive, though, it's a shame the songwriting can't really keep up.

Flotation Toy Warning - Buffer's Guide to the Flight Deck
I guess this falls into the Flaming Lips/Mercury Rev area of rock. These guys clearly have a baroque boner, which comes into plenty of the melodies and instrumentals, but it becomes frustrating when a large number of the songs on the album sound harmonically like rock interpretations of pachelbel's cannon. Both parts of Fire Engine on Fire were great, same with Happiness is on the Outside, most of the other songs I didn't mind but wasn't particularly enamored with. 5+

Da Boss, baby. Boss Baby.
>Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.
This sounds a bit like a Van Morrison album from this time if Van Morrison were American. Most of my experience with Bruce Springsteen albums is that Bruce is front-and-center as a singer-songwriter. This album feels a bit different in that his vocals are pretty low in the mix (good luck discerning his millions of words) and it generally feels like more of a full band effort with incredibly prominent bass. It's a shame Clarence Clemons isn't much on display here.
Ok, but it is impressive how developed his sound is on this first official release under his name. That trademark song style is all here, albeit with just generally less interesting melodies and he doesn't sound quite as grizzled as on his most popular works. Everything kind of sounds like "Thunder Road", or really, Van Morrison's "Domino". In short, it's less about Bruce here, and he definitely doesn't have the emotional depth that would come to fruition on Darkness on the Edge of Town. A lot of the songs, like "Angel", are just indefensible and unmemorable as songs.
"Lost in the Flood" is kind of cool as an actual rock song, which isn't something you're used to hearing from him. It's an abstract point to pound on, but it's just kind of interesting how this sounds like some band rather than a Bruce Springsteen album. It also means a lot of the appeal is lost.

7 for building nothing? Aww. It'll grow on you. I'd like to see what you make of the other records I recommended you, as well as Smog.
>>72143249
Smog was a bit bland imo, forgot to rate it, was a 6, far too drawn out for my liking, sad to be sure (criticizing a slowcore album for being slow look at me)
(what were the albums you recced apart from Sondre Lerch)

>Keiji Haino/Fushitsusha - ę¬ ē: Unheard Pieces of the Late XXth & Early XXIst Centuries
So this CD came with the new book about Keiji released in France. The music on the CD is split in a similar way the companion CD for the film documentary about Keiji worked: one half is Haino solo, the other half is Fushitsusha.
First letās talk about the Fushitsusha bits. From what I hear, I believe these are circa 2002-3 when Haino was touring with Ozawa. A guitar - bass duet is a mighty force when these two play (as it was seen on Secret Black Box for example). They perform 2 Fushitsusha classics that I recognised. Nattanjanai (track 2) is a bit more chaotic than usual but it does start from the traditional B-chord and eventually loses any signs of form once Keiji goes into his noise rock excursions. The best bit was when Ozawa came back in solo prior to the ending. Very sweet dynamic shift. Acchi (track 4) is in its shortest form I have heard and really doesnāt have the punch or the menace any of the other versions I heard possessed. Haino barely even sings on it too. There is also a familiar track (track 3) that I canāt seem to remember, but it did remind me of something of Hisou just a bit. Maybe itās the groove. Either way, it is a great one. Ozawaās bass tone is thick crust on here.
>>72143716
There are also 2 lengthy solo Keiji Haino tracks. The opener is a blackened dream appearing out of looped electric guitar. These are some of my favourite Haino techniques, so Iām always a sucker for this. The closing track is another looped performance, but this time Keiji uses his voice. The vocalise performance is far from his Artaudian exorcisms on Un autre chemin vers l'Ultime, making it much more enjoyable in my opinion. There is also this bizarre low drone amongst it all that I assume is also vocally produced. Thatās probably the coolest thing to be lost in between Keijiās howls. Closer to the end he also plays some high-pitched, whistle-like instrument that frightened me a bit. Love me some looped Haino howling so I loved the hell out of this track as well.
Interesting release, worth a listen for the solo Keiji tracks. The Fushitsusha bits are remarkable due to the magic between Ozawa and Haino, but Iām really not a fan of this version of Acchi. Glad I got this regardless. Iāll give it a 7+ for now. Potential 8- with further relistens.

The first step is to know the intricacies of the /daily/ market, all based on (you)'s. Buy low, sell high, yadda yadda - it isn't all that complicated. Basic stock stuff, you get the picture. The key to remember is that DAILYAQ is heavily influenced by speculation. Posting hot take reviews, lengthy writeups on obscure (preferably Japanese or at the very least Asian) albums and panning popular contemporary acts are sure fire ways to accumulate (you)'s. If you can manage these steps and cash out at the right time, you'll dominate. I mean, it's how FISH, Dogwander and NatKingCole (respectively) have become the tastemakers of the board. Gaining a tripcode is a crucial in adding (you)'s as well, as people will track your taste, shitting on it as you go along.
Good luck, you've got a tough road ahead of you son

Let's not disregard the massive influence nyarlathotep has had by discussing and reviewing Sondre Lerche and Jens Lekman, who are among the best ever musicians and are totally dominating the AOTY scene (as well as the patrician scene) with their hot new records
>>72143999
fantastic post/digits, but I'm hardly a "tastemaker" whatever that exactly means. Nat and Dogwander are arguable tho.
The only important thing I've ever contributed to the world of music was the 98.12.28 translation and even that was pretty niche.

>I'm hardly a "tastemaker" whatever that exactly means.
Idk man just shitpisting from work here cause I ain't got anything else to do. Though I will say you have a decent amount of influence on this board, for whatever it's worth
Hi! New to /daily/, relatively new to posting on /mu/. I don't really have much of a music taste, so I'm just gonna listen to a bunch of stuff and see what sticks, I guess. I put together a bunch of albums I see on /mu/ that I haven't listened to just so I can have a starting point.
>Neutral Milk Hotel- On Avery Island
My friend is a huge NMH fan, and he really pushed this one on me. However, as much as I like In The Airplane Over The Sea, this one didnāt do much for me. Jeffās voice feels a lot more grating on this album, and the music feels repetitive. I donāt know, I guess this one just doesnāt grab me as much as ITAOTS does. That being said, it's still pretty decent. I think Naomi is a pretty good song.

How? How did it happen, Tuco?
Dziga Vertov - Man With a Movie Camera
[1929]
One thing about this film is that it definitely has no chill. The images are just rolling and rolling and the editing is, in typical early russian fashion, fast as fuck, and even in the calmer moments the composition of the shots suggest movement. What we see is scenes of a cameraman taking his camera to unusal and risky places, intertwined by a portrait of city life and the citizens' activities, and that's pretty much all there is to it; however the movie ends with an audience watching the cameraman's film which is the film we also watched so it's all really meta and cool. Watched it with the Nyman soundtrack which was great.
